Missing Pieces Project: Add Your Pieces to the Big Picture
All over England are places with stories to tell: from buildings to battlefields, some on your doorstep, others just a day trip away. Their stories are still being written, and they won't be complete until you share your side.
The Missing Pieces Project invites you to share your pictures and stories of the unique, significant and memorable places on the National Heritage List for England. The List is a register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites across England. Your view of a place is as unique as you are, so every snapshot and story you add is an important piece of the picture. And the more pieces of the picture we have, the better we can work together to protect what makes these places special. Whether you have a connection to a place already or you' re discovering it for the first time, your views add important new pieces to the picture.
Images: from phone snaps to scans of old photos and architects' drawings, from wide angles to close-ups
Stories: from memories of holidays, school trips and family events to information about grand openings and transformations
Photos must be ones you took yourself, from public land or rights of way, or with permission from the landowner. To add an historic image, you must have the rights to it. See the Missing Pieces Project terms and conditions for more information.
Sign in and make a difference.

Raised in Jacksonville, a small town in North Carolina, Christina Koch always knew she wanted to be an astronaut. This dream began as early as kindergarten, during a time when spaceflight was dominated by men. “Fortunately, when I told my kindergarten teachers that I wanted to be an astronaut they supported me. No one told me that it was unattainable. And whether it was my own hard-headedness or that encouragement, I did go full forward into pursuing my dream to become an astronaut,” she says.
Koch found inspiration in pioneers like Sally Ride and Mae Jemison, but also in everyday heroes — from civil rights activists to her independent grandmother. These examples, along with her family’s emphasis on hard work, instilled in her the courage to chase her dreams.
Koch studied physics and electrical engineering before joining NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center, where she contributed to the development of scientific instruments on several space missions. Driven by a thirst for adventure, she spent a year in Antarctica’s tough environment and then in other remote locations like Greenland. Unsurprisingly, she cited photography, travel, camping and climbing among her hobbies.
The ultimate fulfillment (实现) of her dream came in 2013, when she was selected as an astronaut, joining a groundbreaking class with an equal number of men and women. Previously, women comprised only 17% of NASA’s astronauts. After completing training in 2015, she was assigned her first long-stay mission on the International Space Station (ISS). Her success is undeniable. As part of the Artemis II mission, scheduled for 2025, she’ll travel further than any human since Apollo, an evidence of her constant ambition.
Koch advocates following passions and embracing challenges. “Do what scares you,” she advises, “because those things often lead to the greatest fulfillment and contributions.”Besides, Koch also says that there’s one that should never be forgotten: “Support the people around you. Make sure that you’re thinking about the success of those around you, that you’re helping them, and together we all will achieve as much as we possibly can.”
24. What initially motivated Koch to become an astronaut?
A. Her desire to push herself to the limit.
B. Her early enthusiasm in space exploration.
C. Her wish to reward her kindergarten teachers.
D. Her ambition to change the position of women astronauts.
25. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Koch invented some scientific devices.
B. Koch set a record for the longest spaceflight.
C. Various hobbies prepared Koch for adventure.
D. Role models impacted Koch greatly in her life journey.
26. What does Koch’s advice indicate?
A. Seeking support is crucial for dream chasers.
B. Being kind to others is the stepstone to success.
C. Welcoming challenges leads to personal growth.
D. Working tirelessly is key to overcoming barriers.
27. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Christina Koch: An Explorer of Nature
B. Christina Koch: A Dream Pursuer to Space
C. Christina Koch: A Role Model from Jacksonville
D. Christina Koch: A Distinguished Female Scientist

Recently, a coalition of business and advocacy groups from around Washington gathered to kick off a campaign to enact a carbon pricing program in the capital. Known as the Climate and Community Reinvestment Act of D.C., the plan would place a new tax on all fossil fuels bought or sold, with the hope of ultimately discouraging the use of these polluting energy sources.
The big-picture goal of this campaign is admirable: to address the ever-deepening crisis of climate chaos by dissuading the continued use of coal, oil and gas. But unfortunately, the approach —one based in a world of financial markets, trading schemes and encouraging new public revenue streams —is inherently flawed. Simply put, carbon pricing is a false solution to climate change and a distraction from real, effective climate solutions we must urgently pursue.
To date, there is insufficient evidence to indicate that carbon taxes lower greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, the opposite is true. Recently Food & Water Watch reviewed the British Columbia carbon tax program, often cited by advocates as an example of success. From 2009(the first full year of the tax)to 2014, emissions from taxed sources grew by 4.3 percent. And in the seven years after the carbon tax took effect, total gasoline sales increased by 7.37 percent.
Supporters of such plans like to focus on a deceivingly (貌似地) simple notion that increasing the price of a consumer good will automatically reduce its use. But this just isn’t the case when it comes to the purchase of necessities. People must heat their homes in winter, and they must commute to work, regardless of the cost.
Those backing the D.C.carbon pricing plan like to note that revenue from the new tax would go toward investment in clean energy sources. But only 20 percent of the generated funds would be allocated in this manner. The rest would be shared out in tax breaks for businesses and rebates (退还款) for consumers, another factor undercutting the belief that increased costs up front would change consumer behavior in the long run.
Regardless of what many activists and community leaders want to believe, there is no convenient, market-friendly solution to our terrible climate condition. The latest science indicates that in order to avoid the worst effects of deepening climate chaos, society must transition completely to clean, renewable energy by 2035.
28. What did Food &.Water Watch find out about carbon tax program?
A. Carbon taxes could reduce greenhouse gas emissions
B. Carbon emissions grew at a lower rate than gasoline sales.
C. Carbon taxes program was generally regarded as a success.
D. Carbon tax program made little difference to carbon emission.
29. What is the author’s argument against carbon taxes?
A. Funds gained will benefit clean energy sources.
B. Consumers will use less of a good when its price increases.
C. Increased cost will have little effect on the use of necessities.
D. Consumers’ reliance on fossil fuels will decrease dramatically.
30. What does the underlined word “undercutting”in paragraph 5 mean?.
A. ruining B. weakening C. highlighting D. securing
31. The most suitable title for this text would be ______.
A. The faulty Carbon Tax. B. The Climate Change Myth.
C. The Call for Clean Energy. D. The Causes of Carbon Tax.

Jorg Muller, an ecologist at the University of Würzburg, with his colleagues, proposes a way to measure the biodiversity—listen to the jungle by AI, in a paper published in Nature Communications.
The rainforests are very important and always alive with the sounds of animals, which is useful to ecologists. When it comes to measuring the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal caller is more effective than uncovering the bushes looking for tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis method is time-consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears. Muller’s idea was to apply the principle of smartphone apps which can identify the sounds of birds, bats and mammals to conservation work.
The researchers took recordings from across 43 sites in the rainforests. Some sites were relatively primitive, old-growth forests. Others were areas that had just been cleared for pasture(牧场) recently. And some other original forests had been cleared but then abandoned, allowing themselves to regrow. The various calls were identified by an expert, and then used to construct a list of the species present. As expected, the longer the land had been free from agricultural activity, the greater biodiversity it hosted. Then it was the computer’s turn. “We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts,” says Dr. Muller.
Of course, not everything in a rainforest makes a noise. Dr. Muller and his colleagues used light traps to catch night-flying insects, and DNA analysis to identify them. They found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable representative for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.
Besides measuring the biodiversity, the results are also expected to be applied to outside ecology departments. Under pressure from their customers, firms like L’Oreal, a make-up company, and Shell, an oil firm, have been spending money on forest restoration projects around the world. Dr. Muller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standard way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.
32. Why does Muller propose to measure biodiversity with AI?
A. To make a new conservation principle.
B. To seek away fit for hot environments.
C. To work more efficiently than manpower
D. To study the rainforests more specifically.
33. How was the identification work of AI tools on the 43 sites?
A. It agreed with the work from experts..
B. It identified different types of rainforests.
C. It recorded more sounds in the abandoned forests.
D. It was used to restore the biodiversity for pasture.
34. What does the author indicate in paragraph 4?
A. DNA analysis is skeptical in the research.
B. Quiet animals are as diverse as noisy ones.
C. A rainforest is always full of various noises.
D. AI technology is used to catch the insects.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The research focuses on biodiversity only.
B. L’Oreal and Shell develop monitoring apps.
C. The research will assist in forest restoration.
D. AI’s help will attract some sponsors’ investment.

How Playing Sports Benefits Your Body and Your Brain
Many people love to celebrate victory on the playing field, cheer for their favorite teams, and play sports. But here’s a question: Should we be so addicted to sports? Is playing sports actually as good for us as we make it out to be, or just a fun and entertaining pastime? 36 .
First of all, exercising, especially when we’re young, has all sorts of health benefits. It strengthens our bones, clears out bad cholesterol (胆固醇) from our arteries, and decreases the risk of stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes. When we work out, our brains also release a number of chemicals, including endorphins (内啡肽). These natural hormones control pain and pleasure responses in the central nervous system. 37 . Studies show that if you can find a sport and a team you like, there are all sorts of benefits that go beyond the physical and mental benefits of exercise alone.
In addition, commitment to a team and doing something fun can also make it easier to establish a regular habit of exercise. School sport participation has also been shown to reduce the risk of suffering from depression for up to four years. 38 . There are a few reasons for that. One is found in training. Just by working at skills, especially with a good coach, you develop a growth mindset within yourself, which is useful in all walks of life. 39 . The experience of coming to terms with defeat can build the resilience (复原力) and self-awareness necessary to manage academic, social, and physical obstacles.
Now, not everyone will enjoy every sport. But if you spend some time looking, you’ll be able to find a sport that fits your individual needs. 40 . You’ll be a part of a supportive community, you’ll be building your confidence, you’ll be exercising your body, and you’ll be nurturing your mind.
A. What does science have to say?

The Atbai Desert, a part of the Sahara Desert, is one of the 56 (dry) places on Earth, with a sandy and barren landscape that averages zero millimeters of rainfall each year. So, archaeologists were surprised when they discovered rock art showing boats and cattle in an area 57 is 60 miles away from the closest body of water.
“It was surprising to find cattle 58 (carve) on desert rock walls as they require plenty of water and wide-open grassland, and would not survive in Sahara today,” said Julien Cooper, an archaeologist from Macquarie University. “The discovery of boat 59 (image) in the rock art this distant from lakes and rivers was also surprising.”
Archaeologists believe the discovery provides clear evidence supporting the theory of 60 once “Green Sahara” around 3,000 B.C. E. During this period, the area was a grassy plain with lakes and rivers 61 (sustain) a variety of wildlife and human activities such as cattle herding. However, changes in African monsoon (季风) patterns transformed the Sahara 62 the barren desert we know today. 63 (current), only hardy animals like camels and goats can survive there.
The rock art’s detailed carvings suggest that the creators spent plenty of time in the area, further indicating that the region 64 (be) once supportive of human life. As the climate grew unforgiving many residents were forced to migrate closer to the Nile, contributing to the formation of early urban states and culture in Egypt and Nubia. The discovery offers valuable insight into the changes that 65 (occur) in the Sahara over the past thousands of years.

My father was the kind of person who could never pass by someone who needed help. He was a firm believer in the mantra(信条): What goes around comes around. He believed that someday he might need help, and someone would return the favor. But I didn't quite agree with it.
One weekend, my father and I took a trip to Flaming Gorge Reservoir(水库). We loved to fish at Flaming Gorge. We owned a boat with a cabin and the boat was about fifteen feet in length. We put our boat in at Sheep Creek Bay. Our goal was to go as far north as possible, spend the weekend in our boat, and fish until we had our limit.
Heading toward the Wyoming side of the reservoir, we traveled some distance before we began to fish. Frankly, the fishing wasn't very good, but we loved being out on the boat together in such a beautiful place.
Suddenly, we saw a man on the far shore waving at us. Immediately, my father fired up the motor and went toward the other side of the reservoir, where the man was still waving at us. When we arrived, I was amazed to see a beautiful big yacht(游艇) pulled onto the shore.
The man introduced himself as Mat and then thanked us warmly for coming to his assistance. His battery was dead, and he wondered if we could help him. We did, and soon his big motor roared back to life. Mat and his family were very grateful. We lost an hour of fishing. Being an impatient teenager, I was a bit annoyed at the one-hour loss, but we were soon back out on the reservoir.
The next day the fishing didn't improve. As a matter of fact, it was terrible, so we decided to call it quits and go back to the bay. We were about two miles from the bay when we found ourselves fighting a strong headwind that slowed our progress. The waves were kicking up, and suddenly our engine decided to quit.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

We tried to get it running, but it simply wouldn't start.

People don't have to deal with forest fires or drought here. But as you can see from where the sea water hits the land, this coastline has been badly damaged. Currently, our biggest issues are damage to homes and the loss of wildlife habitat. Yes, that's why i've invaded you to the season park today. You and your group of government figures are in a unique position to help with your assistance, will be able to pass new environmental protection policies. I agree, and i'm so glad you invited us here. We've received money for environmental projects, but haven't learned the best ways to defend our land from rising sea levels. The most urgent step is creating a policy to build natural barriers to prevent damage to houses. There are five times more climate related issues now than there were fifty years ago. People don't have to deal with forest fires or drought here. But as you can see from whether seawater hits the land, this coast line has been badly damaged. Currently, our biggest issues are damage to homes and the loss of wildlife habitat. Yes, that's why i've invaded you to the seaside park today. You and your group of government figures are in a unique position to help with your assistance, will be able to pass new environmental protection policies. This is what I wanted to learn. We only have one more year of high school i've considered applying to duke university or johns hopkins university in the U. S. But I haven't decided yet. Wow, that's an impressive list. I've already decided to study at king's college london. I just want to attend the college closed to my home. I see I just made a list of the world's top medical schools. Are any of your family members doctors? And glad you've decided on that major. None of my relatives, actually. I recently picked this subject. I just volunteered at a local hospital. This experience influenced all my plans. That's a perfect experience to use for applying for scholarships. Many programs reward high school students for their volunteer work. So should I apply by writing essays or having an interview . right about your experience? About eight months ago, I wrote an essay about my career plans. I sent this essay to over five colleges. Then I was accepted into a scholarship program four months ago.
根据第一段中“Raised in Jacksonville, a small town in North Carolina, Christina Koch always knew she wanted to be an astronaut. This dream began as early as kindergarten, during a time when spaceflight was dominated by men.”(克里斯蒂娜·科赫(Christina Koch)在北卡罗来纳州的一个小镇杰克逊维尔(Jacksonville)长大,她一直知道自己想成为一名宇航员。
根据第二段“Koch found inspiration in pioneers like Sally Ride and Mae Jemison, but also in everyday heroes — from civil rights activists to her independent grandmother. These examples, along with her family’s emphasis on hard work, instilled in her the courage to chase her dreams.”(科赫从莎莉·莱德(Sally Ride)和梅·杰米森(Mae Jemison)等先驱身上找到了灵感,但也从日常生活中的英雄身上找到了灵感——从民权活动家到她独立的祖母。
根据最后一段“Koch advocates following passions and embracing challenges. “Do what scares you,” she advises, “because those things often lead to the greatest fulfillment and contributions.” ”(科赫倡导追随激情,迎接挑战。“做你害怕的事,”她建议道,“因为那些事情往往会带来最大的成就感和贡献。”)可推知,科赫的建议表明,迎接挑战能促进个人成长。故选C项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段“Raised in Jacksonville, a small town in North Carolina, Christina Koch always knew she wanted to be an astronaut. This dream began as early as kindergarten, during a time when spaceflight was dominated by men. “Fortunately, when I told my kindergarten teachers that I wanted to be an astronaut they supported me. No one told me that it was unattainable. And whether it was my own hard-headedness or that encouragement, I did go full forward into pursuing my dream to become an astronaut,” she says.”(克里斯蒂娜·科赫(Christina Koch)在北卡罗来纳州的一个小镇杰克逊维尔(Jacksonville)长大,她一直知道自己想成为一名宇航员。
D 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据文章第三段中“To date, there is insufficient evidence to indicate that carbon taxes lower greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, the opposite is true. Recently Food & Water Watch reviewed the British Columbia carbon tax program, often cited by advocates as an example of success. From 2009(the first full year of the tax)to 2014, emissions from taxed sources grew by 4.3 percent. And in the seven years after the carbon tax took effect, total gasoline sales increased by 7.37 percent.(迄今为止,没有足够的证据表明碳税可以降低温室气体排放。事实上,恰恰相反。最近,食品与水观察》组织审查了不列颠哥伦比亚省的碳税计划,该计划经常被倡导者引用为成功的例子。从2009年(税收的第一个全年)到2014年,税收来源的排放量增长了4.3%。在碳税生效后的七年里,汽油总销量增长了7.37%)” 可知,《食品与水观察》发现,对碳排放征税并不能减少污染。故选D项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“But this just isn’t the case when it comes to the purchase of necessities. People must heat their homes in winter, and they must commute to work, regardless of the cost.(但在购买生活必需品时,情况就不一样了。冬天,人们必须给自己的房子供暖,他们必须不顾成本通勤上班。)”和第五段中“The rest would be shared out in tax breaks for businesses and rebates(退还款)for consumers, another factor undercutting the belief that increased costs up front would change consumer behavior in the long run.(剩下的部分将通过对企业的减税和对消费者的退税来分配,另一个因素削弱了这样一种观念,即预先增加的成本将从长远来看改变消费者的行为。)”
由文章第五段“Those backing the D.C.carbon pricing plan like to note that revenue from the new tax would go toward investment in clean energy sources. But only 20 percent of the generated funds would be allocated in this manner. The rest would be shared out in tax breaks for businesses and rebates(退还款)for consumers, another factor undercutting the belief that increased costs up front would change consumer behavior in the long run.(那些支持D.C.碳定价计划的人希望注意到,新税的收入将用于清洁能源投资。但只有20%的资金会以这种方式分配。其余部分将通过企业税收减免和消费者退税来分担,这是另一个 人们认为增加前期成本将从长远来看改变消费者行为的因素。)”可知,只有很少资金用于清洁能源投资,所以这“削弱”人们认为这种方法有效的看法。所以猜测undercutting表“削弱”。故选B项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第二段中 “Simply put, carbon pricing is a false solution to climate change and a distraction from real, effective climate solutions we must urgently pursue.(,简单地说,碳定价是一个错误的气候变化解决方案,分散了我们对现实的、有效的气候解决方案的注意力,我们必须迫切地追求这些解决方案。)” 所以A项The faulty Carbon Tax.(错误的碳税。) 故选A项。
C 33. A 34. B 35. C
根据第二段中“When it comes to measuring the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal caller is more effective than uncovering the bushes looking for tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis method is time-consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears.”(在测量一块土地的生物多样性时,倾听动物的叫声比揭开灌木丛寻找足迹和爪印更有效。
根据第三段中““We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts,” says Dr. Muller.”(“我们发现人工智能工具可以像专家一样识别声音,”穆勒博士说。) 故选A项。
根据第四段中“They found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable representative for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.”(他们发现,嘈杂动物的多样性也是安静动物多样性的可靠代表。)
Muller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standard way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.”(穆勒博士希望一种自动检查结果的方法可以帮助监督这些努力,并提供一种标准方法来衡量它们是否像赞助商所说的那样有效。)

66.
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last Friday.
We were tasked to draw or paint something that impressed us most. Inspired by the fantastic scenery, I decided to create a watercolor painting of the small bridge over the park’s pond, surrounded by blooming flowers.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded by nature not only sparked my creativity but also offered a much-needed break from the usual hustle and bustle of school life. I felt a deep sense of peace as I painted.
In a word, it was not just an art class; it was a moment of connection with nature that I truly cherished.
Yours,
Li Hua

The once-reliable engine now lay silent, leaving us adrift helplessly on the vast reservoir. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Mat pulled up alongside us and asked if he could be of assistance. His friendly smile reassured us almost immediately, easing our worry. I was amazed that of all the people on the reservoir, Mat would be the person to show up to give us aid. Gratefully accepting his kind offer, we secured our boat to his. Chatting and laughing all the way, we returned to the bay safe and sound and were ready for home.
On our way home, I saw an old lady waving at our car by the roadside. Obviously, she was in need of help. Without thinking twice, I asked my father to pull over beside her, which my father did immediately. As we approached the lady, her face lit up with a glimmer of hope. She explained that her car had broken down, leaving her trapped on the way. We assured her that we would help. As the engine roared back to life, the old lady's gratitude overflowed. As we waved the grateful lady goodbye, my heart swelled with a newfound understanding of my father's mantra. What goes around really comes around. I finally had a chance to witness my father's mantra in action and follow in his footsteps.

We tried to get it running, but it simply wouldn't start. The wind was picking up, and the waves were getting rougher. We were stranded, and the situation was becoming dire. My father, always the optimist, suggested we wave at the passing boats for help. I was skeptical, but we had no other choice. To our surprise, a boat soon approached us. It was Mat, the man we had helped the day before. He recognized us and quickly offered his assistance. With his help, we managed to get our engine restarted and were able to continue our journey back to the bay.
On our way home, I saw an old lady waving at our car by the roadside. She looked distressed, and her car was on the side of the road with a flat tire. My father pulled over without hesitation, and we helped her change the tire. As we were finishing up, the old lady thanked us and said, "What goes around comes around." It was then that I realized the truth in my father's mantra. We had been helped when we needed it, and now we were able to help someone else. It was a lesson in kindness and the power of paying it forward that I would never forget.

We tried to get it running, but it simply wouldn't start. The sun was setting, casting an ominous glow over the water, and the chill of the evening air was settling in. My father and I exchanged worried glances, knowing that we were ill-equipped to handle the night on the reservoir. Just as we were about to accept our fate, a familiar figure appeared on the horizon. It was Mat, who had been out for a leisurely evening cruise. He had seen our predicament and came to our rescue, bringing with him tools and a spare battery. With his expertise and our combined efforts, we managed to get the engine purring once more. As we thanked him, I couldn't help but reflect on the serendipity of our situation and the kindness of strangers.
On our way home, I saw an old lady waving at our car by the roadside. Her face was etched with worry, and it was clear she needed assistance. My father, true to his nature, pulled over to offer help. We discovered that her car had run out of fuel, leaving her stranded. Without a moment's hesitation, my father offered to drive her to the nearest gas station. As we helped her, I felt a deep sense of connection to the community around us. The old lady's gratitude was palpable, and she reiterated the same sentiment my father had always preached: "What goes around comes around." It was a powerful reminder that every act of kindness, no matter how small, can create a ripple effect that touches others in unexpected ways.
