Today, we're going to engage in the Assessing Your Progress section of Unit 3 Sports and Fitness. This part is crucial as it allows us to evaluate how much we've learned and how well we can apply the knowledge and skills related to sports and fitness. Through various activities and exercises, you'll have the chance to reflect on your understanding of the vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and speaking aspects covered in this unit. By the end of this class, you should be able to identify your strengths and areas for improvement in the context of sports and fitness - related English learning. II. Vocabulary Review Let's kick off with a vocabulary assessment. You all know that a rich vocabulary is the building block of effective communication. In this unit, we've encountered a plethora of words and phrases related to sports and fitness. I'll start by showing you some pictures on the screen. These pictures depict different sports activities, fitness equipment, and health - related concepts. I want you to quickly call out the English words associated with them. (Show pictures of running, weightlifting, yoga, a treadmill, a dumbbell, and a person with a healthy complexion) For example, when I show the picture of a person running, you should say “running” or “jogging”. And for the picture of the weightlifting equipment, you could say “dumbbell” or “barbell”. Alright, here we go! (Show pictures one by one and let students respond) Great job! Now, let's move on to another vocabulary task. I'll give you a list of words and phrases from the unit, and I want you to use them in sentences. This will help you not only remember the words but also understand how to use them in context. The words are “fitness”, “work out”, “energetic”, “balanced diet”, “athlete”, and “physical activity”. You can work in pairs to come up with creative sentences. (Write the words on the board and give students a few minutes to work in pairs) Let's hear some of your sentences. Which pair would like to start? (Call on pairs of students to share their sentences) Wonderful! I can see that you've grasped the meanings of these words quite well. Remember, using vocabulary in real - life sentences is a great way to internalize them. III. Grammar Focus In this unit, we've also studied some important grammar points related to describing sports, fitness, and personal experiences. One of the key grammar areas is the use of the present perfect tense to talk about past experiences that have an impact on the present, especially when it comes to changes in our health and fitness. For example, “I have started going to the gym regularly, and I feel much healthier now.” I'll give you a set of sentences, and you need to identify whether the use of the present perfect tense is correct or not. If it's incorrect, you should correct it. Here are the sentences: 1. I have try many different diets, but none of them worked. 0. She has been running every morning for the past month, and she has lost some weight. 0. They have played basketball yesterday. (Write the sentences on the board and let students think) Okay, who wants to share their answers? (Call on students to answer) Correct! In the first sentence, “try” should be in the past participle form “tried”, so it should be “I have tried many different diets, but none of them worked.” The second sentence is correct as it uses the present perfect continuous tense “has been running” to show an action that started in the past and is still continuing. And in the third sentence, “yesterday” is a specific past time, so we should use the simple past tense “played” instead of “have played”. It should be “They played basketball yesterday.” Another grammar point is the use of comparatives and superlatives to compare different sports or fitness levels. For instance, “Running is more tiring than walking, but it is also more beneficial for your heart.” I'll give you some sports or fitness - related items, and you need to make comparative or superlative sentences using them. The items are “swimming and cycling (in terms of calorie - burning)”, “yoga and weightlifting (in terms of flexibility)”, and “the most popular sport in our school”. (Let students work on creating sentences) Now, let's share our sentences. Who has a sentence about swimming and cycling? (Call on students to share their sentences) Brilliant! These sentences clearly show your understanding of comparatives and superlatives in the context of sports and fitness. IV. Reading Comprehension Assessment Now, it's time to test your reading comprehension skills. I'll distribute a short passage related to sports and fitness. The passage will have some new information as well as concepts we've covered in the unit. As you read, I want you to keep in mind the following questions: 1. What is the main idea of the passage? 0. What are the key points the author makes about a particular sport or fitness activity? 0. Can you find any new vocabulary or expressions related to sports and fitness in the passage? (Hand out the passage and give students time to read) After you've finished reading, I'll ask you to answer the questions. You can work individually at first, and then we can discuss your answers as a class. (Let students answer the questions individually and then start the class discussion) Let's start with the first question. What is the main idea of the passage? Who would like to share their answer? (Call on students to answer) Great analysis! Now, for the second question, what are the key points the author makes about the sport or fitness activity mentioned? (Continue the discussion) Finally, let's look at the new vocabulary. Can anyone point out some new words or expressions related to sports and fitness? (Encourage students to share) By doing this reading comprehension exercise, you've not only practiced your reading skills but also expanded your knowledge of sports and fitness - related English. V. Writing Practice Writing is an essential skill, and in this unit, we've learned how to write about our own experiences with sports and fitness, as well as compare different sports or fitness methods. Now, I want you to write a short paragraph. The topic is “My Favorite Sport and How It Benefits My Health”. In your paragraph, you should include the following: 1. What your favorite sport is. 0. How often you play or practice this sport. 0. At least two ways in which this sport benefits your physical and mental health. You can start by making a simple outline in your mind. Think about the vocabulary and grammar we've reviewed today. Also, try to use some connecting words like “firstly”, “secondly”, “moreover” to make your paragraph more organized. (Let students start writing. Walk around the classroom to offer help and guidance) After you've finished writing, I want you to exchange your paragraphs with your 同桌. Read your partner's paragraph and check for the following: 0. Does it clearly state the favorite sport and the frequency of playing? 0. Are the benefits to physical and mental health well - explained? 0. Are there any grammar or spelling mistakes? 0. Is the paragraph well - organized with the use of connecting words? (Let students peer - review each other's paragraphs) Now, based on your partner's feedback, revise your own paragraph. Make the necessary corrections and improvements. (Let students revise their paragraphs) Let's share some of the well - written paragraphs. Who would like to read their paragraph aloud to the class? (Call on students to share their paragraphs) These paragraphs are really great. You've effectively used the knowledge and skills we've learned in this unit to express your thoughts about your favorite sport and its health benefits. VI. Speaking Activity Last but not least, we'll have a speaking activity. I'll divide you into groups of four. Each group will be given a topic related to sports and fitness, such as “The Importance of Team Sports in Developing Social Skills”, “How to Encourage More People to Exercise”, or “The Role of Diet in Maintaining Good Health”. In your groups, you need to have a discussion. Each member should contribute their ideas. You can use the vocabulary, grammar, and knowledge we've accumulated in this unit. Try to speak clearly and fluently. One member of the group should take notes of the main points of the discussion. (Form groups and distribute topics) After about 10 minutes of discussion, each group will choose a representative to present your group's ideas to the class. The representative should summarize the main points of the discussion in a clear and concise manner. (Let groups discuss and then present) These presentations are excellent. You've shown great communication skills and a deep understanding of the sports and fitness - related topics through your group discussions and presentations. VII. Summary and Reflection In today's class, we've comprehensively assessed your progress in Unit 3 Sports and Fitness. We've reviewed vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and speaking. You've all done a great job. Now, I want you to take a few minutes to reflect on your performance in this class. Think about what you did well and what you still need to improve. (Let students reflect) Let's quickly share some of our reflections. Who would like to start? (Call on students to share their reflections) Based on your reflections, I encourage you to continue practicing and improving your English skills related to sports and fitness. You can read more sports - related articles, watch English - language sports programs, and keep writing and speaking about your own experiences. VIII. Homework For your homework, I want you to do the following: 1. Review all the exercises and activities we did in today's class. Make sure you fully understand the vocabulary, grammar, and skills we covered. 0. Write a short essay about “The Future of Sports and Fitness in Our Society”.
