Introduction Hello, everyone. In this class, we are going to focus on Reading for Writing in Unit 3 Sports and Fitness. This part is very important as it helps us not only understand a passage about a person's change in the concept of health but also learn how to write a comparison and contrast text about physical and mental well - being. By the end of this class, you are expected to be able to analyze the structure and language features of the given passage and write a similar text on your own. II. Pre - reading Let's start with a little warm - up. I want you to think about this question: What is more important to you, being fat or being fit? Take a minute to think about it and then we can share some of our ideas. (Wait for students to think and share) Some of you might say being fit is more important because it is related to our overall health. And some might think that being fat might bring some health problems. Well, let's see what the author in our reading passage thinks. III. While - reading 1. Skimming Now, let's quickly skim through the passage titled “GOING POSITIVE”. Try to get the main idea of each paragraph. (Students skim the passage) Let's check. In the first paragraph, the main idea is that the author always wanted to look like slim girls on TV and was worried about her weight, trying all kinds of diets. The key sentence here is “I always wanted to look like the slim girls on TV even though I knew that it was impossible. I worried about my weight and tried every new diet I read about online.” In the second paragraph, the turning point came when the author read an article. She started to think about fitness rather than weight, and things began to change. The important sentence is “Once I started thinking about fitness rather than weight, things began to change.” In the third paragraph, the author finally became happier and healthier by being positive about herself and her body. The topic sentence is “By being positive about myself and my body, I became both happier and healthier.” 2. Scanning Next, let's scan the passage carefully to answer some detailed questions. Question 1: What diets did the author try? She tried no - fat, low - fat, 5:2, only bananas, no bananas diets. We can find this information in the sentence “I tried no - fat, low - fat, 5:2, only bananas, no bananas — I almost went bananas, too.” Question 2: What made the author change her thinking? She read an article that said instead of asking “Am I fat?” she should be asking “Am I fit?”. As it is written in the passage “Then I read an article that said instead of asking ‘Am I fat?’ I should be asking ‘Am I fit?’ I had no idea a letter could make such a difference! ” Question 3: How did the author's actions change? Instead of saying “I want to lose three kilos”, she would say “I want to run two kilometres in eight minutes” or “I want to be able to do 30 push - ups”. And rather than cutting out the foods she enjoyed, she added healthy foods to her meals. For example, she could still have a burger now and then but would add a salad or an apple. Also, she stopped comparing herself with actresses and models and made a list of the things she liked about herself. 3. Analyzing the Structure and Language Features Now, let's analyze the structure of the passage. It follows a clear pattern. First, it presents the problem in the past, which is the author's obsession with weight. Then, there is a turning point when she reads the article. After that, it shows the changes in her thinking and actions, and finally, the positive results she gets. Let's also look at the language features. The author uses a lot of expressions to show the contrast. For example, “instead of” is used many times. “Instead of saying ‘I want to lose three kilos’, I would say ‘I want to run two kilometres in eight minutes’ ”, “Rather than cutting out the foods I enjoyed, I added healthy foods to my meals.” These expressions help to clearly show the difference between the past and the present. Another useful phrase is “rather than”. We can see it in “Once I started thinking about fitness rather than weight, things began to change.” IV. Writing Guidance 1. Brainstorming Now, it's your turn to write. Let's first brainstorm some topics related to health. You can think about how you balance study and rest, how you keep fit, or how you improve your mental health. For example, if you choose the topic of balancing study and rest, you can think about what you used to do in the past. Maybe you used to study all the time and never had enough rest. Then think about what you do now. Perhaps you have learned to take breaks, do some sports, or listen to music to relax. (Let students brainstorm for a while) 2. Outlining After brainstorming, we need to make an outline. Just like the passage we read, we can start with the situation in the past. For example, if your topic is about keeping fit, you can write “In the past, I was very lazy and never did any exercise. I was also not careful about my diet, often eating junk food.” Then, write about the change. “But then I realized the importance of being fit. I started to read some articles about health and decided to change my lifestyle.” Finally, write about the present situation and the results. “Now, I go to the gym three times a week. I also eat more vegetables and fruits. As a result, I have lost some weight and I feel much more energetic.” 3. Using Appropriate Words and Phrases When writing, we should use appropriate words and phrases. If you want to show the contrast, you can use the words and phrases we learned from the reading passage, such as “instead of”, “rather than”. For example, “Instead of staying up late playing games, I go to bed early to get enough sleep.” “Rather than having fast food every day, I cook healthy meals at home.” If you are writing about health, you can use some related words and phrases like “healthy diet”, “physical exercise”, “build up one's body”, “lose weight”, “be good for health” and so on. For instance, “Doing physical exercise regularly is very good for our health. It can help us build up our body and keep fit.” 4. Drafting Now, based on your outline and the words and phrases you have thought of, start to draft your passage. Remember to write clearly and make your ideas flow smoothly. (Students start to draft their passages. The teacher walks around to offer help if necessary) V. Post - writing 1. Peer - review After you finish drafting, exchange your passages with your partners. When reviewing your partner's passage, pay attention to the following points: Does the writer explain why he/she changed or wanted to change? Does the writer tell how the changes have improved or will improve his/her life? Is the text well - organized? Does the writer use words and expressions correctly to show similarities and differences? (Students peer - review each other's passages) 2. Revision Based on your partner's suggestions, revise your own passage. Check for grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes, and make sure your ideas are clearly expressed. (Students revise their passages) 3. Sharing Finally, we will share some of the well - written passages in class. Let's learn from each other. (Some students share their passages, and the class can give feedback) VI. Summary In this class, we have read a passage about a person's change in the concept of health. We analyzed its structure and language features. Then we learned how to write a comparison and contrast text about health - related topics. Remember to plan your writing, use appropriate words and phrases, and revise your work carefully. Health is very important in our lives, and through writing, we can better understand and express our thoughts about how to keep healthy. VII. Homework For your homework, I want you to rewrite your passage based on today's class discussion and make it more perfect. You can also choose another health - related topic and write a new passage. Next class, we will share more of our works. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
