Frist Impressions
We look at people’s physical appearance, such as their eyes, hair, and height, all the time. When we meet someone we don’t know, we create an idea of what that person is like in our mind. This is called a first impression.
How do we create first impressions of people? Most of the time, we see what the person looks like. For example, we may think that a person wearing glasses looks smart.
A writer, Malcolm Gladwell, wrote about how we make decisions by using our first impressions. He did a study of the leaders of big companies in the United States. He found that a lot of them were tall men — about 1.8 meters. Most men in the United States are about 1.75 meters tall. Gladwell says that we choose taller people to be our leaders without knowing it. This is because tall people feel like leaders to us. But not everyone agrees. We don’t always make important decisions only by using our first impressions.
Giving people a good first impression can be important, like in a job interview. But first impressions are not always true. We often change how we feel about people when we get to know them better.

Say no to sadness
In August 16-year-old Li Lei felt down for a few days, because his favorite sports star Wang Hao failed to get the gold medal a third time in Table Tennis Men’s Singles at the 2012 London Olympics.
You also get the blues sometimes? It’s OK to feel bad at times, as long as it doesn’t happen too often or last too long. When sad feelings go away, happier ones will take their place.
What do you get sad about?
Lots of different things can cause you to be sad. You might feel sad when things don’t go your way, your feelings get hurt, you lose something special, you miss someone or you hear about something sad.
How can you deal with sad feelings?
Sad feelings don’t have to ruin (毁掉) your day. You can do things to help yourself feel better. Here are some positive things to do when you are sad.
1. Think positive. Even if you’re sad, think of one or two good things about yourself to make you happy.
2. Think of solutions. If you find ways to solve problems by yourself, it can help you feel strong, confident and good about yourself.
3. Get support. Parents, friends and teachers can help you solve your problems and get your mind off what is making you sad.
4. Put yourself in a good mood. Things like playing a sport, taking a walk, or spending time with someone you like can help you shake off a sad mood.
Learning to deal with sad feelings takes practice. Once you do things to take care of sadness, you are making room for more positive feelings. That means a happier you!

Unit 3 Keep Fit
Lesson 4 Section B 1a–1d
总而言之,这三篇自述都有助于学生加深关于“Exercise shapes your body and mind.”

$$Reading plus unit three. healthy body, healthy mind. We all know exercise is . important, yet we don't always want to do IT often we are too busy or feel lazy, but we should try our best to exercise every day. Exercise is good for our body. When we exercise, our body changes. Exercise develops our muscles and makes us stronger. When we exercise, we use energy. This keeps our weight down. Being overweight puts stress on our body. IT can cause pain in our back and knees, and even cause more serious problems such as heart disease later in life. Exercise is also great for our brain. During exercise, our heart beats faster and we breathe harder. Our brain gets more oxygen because of this, and that helps our memory improve. Scientists also tell us the body makes more of certain chemicals after exercise. This helps us to learn and think well, so when you have trouble with your homework, do some exercise, then try again. Exercise also helps us to feel happier. When we exercise, our brain makes special chemicals. These chemicals can relax our body and calm your mind. Feeling fit can also make us feel Better and more confident about ourselves. When we play a sport with others, we can even make new friends. Remember, health is wealth. The more you exercise, the healthier you become. Try to make exercise a part of your life.

Emma: Not at all. Your bat looks well-used. Do you play often? Yaming: Yes, twice a week, and sometimes more! And you?
Do you play often?
adv.
adj.
Emma: Hardly ever. I’m not very good at it!
Yaming: Well, practice makes perfect. How often do you play, Jim?
Jim: I seldom do, but I often play badminton.
Yaming: Oh, me too.
Emma: I sometimes play badminton with Ella. We should all play doubles sometime!
I seldom do中,seldom表示 很少,是频度副词,完整句子应该是 “I seldom play (ping - pong).”,为了避免重复,省略了动词 “play”。

Cat videos help you increase positive feelings
Everyone wants to be happy and healthy, but how can we get both happiness and health? Different people may give us different answers. According to Jessica Gall Myrick, watching Internet cat videos is a good way for people to increase positive (积极的) feelings.
Myrick is a researcher at Indiana University in Bloomington. She studied how online cat videos affected (影响) their feelings of about 7,000 people. “Some people may think watching online cat videos isn’t serious enough for research, but you know, it’s one of the most popular uses of the Internet today,” said Myrick.
The results showed watching cat videos not only brought viewers (观看的人) smiles, but also helped them feel better and improve their health. Viewers said they felt more positive after watching online cat videos than before. They also said they had fewer bad feelings like anger after watching their favorite Internet cats.
Can cat videos be a low-cost way to help people solve health problems? Myrick still didn’t find the answer. But she said she would keep on studying.

Lua, the smart planter with feelings!
Many people like growing plants but only some of them are good at it. People with a green thumb know that plants are like pets: they have their needs, but they can't communicate them to you. If you can't read your plant's mind, don't worry. A smart planter (花盆) named Lua can give you a helping hand. It can turn any of your plants into a life-like pet.
A company named Mu Design came up with the idea of Lua to help people all over the world keep their plants alive and happy. The only thing you have to do is to connect your phone to the planter via (通过) an app.
The screen on the planter can show you 15 different emotions (情感). For example, if there isn't enough light, a scary vampire (吸血鬼) face will appear. If it's too hot, you'll see a sweaty (出汗的) face. If you forget to water your plant, a thirsty face will take over. Lua can also catch a cold or fever depending on the temperature. When all is well, the smart planter will have a peaceful smile.
What's more, Lua can follow your movements with its eyes. If nothing happens, it will go back to sleep. It's life-like, huh?
With Lua, caring for plants becomes easier and more fun. Would you like to have this smart planter?

和“Not at all!”

Lesson 3 Grammar Focus

Don’t Hide Your Feelings
Being in touch with your feelings will make you a better person, as well as a better friend. But so many people choose to hide what they feel for different reasons. Well, I must say, don’t hide your feelings, my friends.
When we choose to hide our feelings, we act differently. We may not make ourselves available to others, or just not fully engage (使融入) when we do spend time with other people. At other times, we may act inappropriately (不恰当地) because our bad feelings are pulling us in a different direction from where we really want or need to go. So, we need to show our feelings. When you express how you really feel in an appropriate manner, problems get solved, and life gets easier.
Sometimes you avoid speaking your truth because the situation requires that you do so. For example, there are other people in the room, or you’re coming from a place of anger. Make sure you’re speaking in a manner that won’t upset those around you. The purpose of expressing your feelings is to be open and honest, not to hurt others.
Many people are afraid to do so because they fear that once they get started, they may not be able to stop. Don’t worry. The truth is that by letting the tears (眼泪) flow, you are letting out what hurts while making more room in your heart for good thoughts and feelings. Expressing your pains is actually a good way to make them stop.
When you open your mouth, you are also opening your heart, and knowing that someone truly hears what you are feeling and understands you.
