One of the biggest risks a modern student faces is a broken phone or laptop. Jake Hertz and Isaac Roberts are two UR students that have launched a new business to fix this exact need: Campus Tech Repair.
Hertz and Roberts started their business three weeks ago. In those three weeks, they had amazing success. In the first day they had posters up, they received nearly a dozen calls from students. Despite not having backgrounds in business, the two gladly accepted the challenges of starting up such an in-demand service.
Hertz and Roberts experienced such a high demand because of the lack of any other hardware repair service on campus. The IT Center itself only provides software fixes: Hertz supposed that this was because of the increased liabilities (法律责任) faced by repair services. Hertz and Roberts did make customers sign a release of liability, yet they also wanted to build a higher level of trust. This, Hertz noted, was the only real challenge that they expected to face.
Becoming directly affiliated (隶属) with or sponsored by the school could solve the problem of community trust. Hertz and Roberts have already engaged in conversation with the University toward this end.
The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship they turn to seeks to “identify and create new partnerships with students, alumni, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations.”
One program of the Ain Center that the two wish to look into is the “Student Incubator (孵化器).” Such a move would allow them to develop a more-permanent structure to Campus Tech Repair. The Incubator provides resources such as furnished office space, Wi-Fi, access to conference room, and guidance. Yet, there’s a problem with this.
“The appeal of what we do is that we’re on campus, so we both just work out of our rooms,” Hertz said.
Hertz is optimistic about the future of the business. They believe that with the support of the University, and the community, they could become an inseparable part of campus services.
4. Why did the business of Hertz and Roberts start well?
A. Because it was much needed.
B. Because they were well-known.
C. Because they were expert in business.
D. Because the school provided no software services.
5. How did they try to win customers’ trust?
A. Making them sign a release of liability.
B. Seeking cooperation with the university.
C. Establishing partnerships with other students.
D. Looking for sponsorship from local businesses.
6. For Hertz and Roberts, what’s the problem with Student Incubator?
A. They can’t afford the cost of it. B. They can’t use all its resources.
C. They are not qualified to join it. D. They don’t want to work in its offices.
7. What is the passage about?
A. Student Incubator of the university.
B. Student experts in hardware repairs.
C. Students start a business on campus.
D. Students work their way through university.
A 5. B 6. D 7. C
根据第二段“In the first day they had posters up, they received nearly a dozen calls from students.(他们张贴海报的第一天,就接到了近十几个学生的电话)” 以及第三段 “Hertz and Roberts experienced such a high demand because of the lack of any other hardware repair service on campus.(由于校园内没有其他硬件维修服务,Hertz 和 Roberts 的业务需求极高)” 可知,他们的生意起步良好是因为市场对其业务需求很大。故选A。
根据第四段“Becoming directly affiliated (隶属) with or sponsored by the school could solve the problem of community trust. Hertz and Roberts have already engaged in conversation with the University toward this end.(直接隶属于学校或获得学校赞助可以解决群体信任问题。Hertz 和 Roberts 已经为此与学校展开了对话)” 可知,他们试图通过与学校合作来赢得客户信任。故选B。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。跟据第七段““The appeal of what we do is that we’re on campus, so we both just work out of our rooms,” Hertz said.(“我们所做之事的吸引力在于我们身处校园,所以我们俩都直接在自己的宿舍开展工作”Hertz 说)” 可知,对于 Hertz 和 Roberts 来说,“Student Incubator” 提供的是有家具的办公室空间等,而他们不想在办公室工作,这就是问题所在。
根据第一段“One of the biggest risks a modern student faces is a broken phone or laptop. Jake Hertz and Isaac Roberts are two UR students that have launched a new business to fix this exact need: Campus Tech Repair.(现代学生面临的最大风险之一是手机或笔记本电脑坏了。Jake Hertz和Isaac Roberts是UR大学的两名学生,他们发起了一项新业务来解决这一需求:校园技术修复)”可知,文章主要围绕 UR 大学的两名学生 Jake Hertz 和 Isaac Roberts 在校园内创办硬件维修业务展开,包括创业原因、遇到的问题及未来规划等。选项 C“学生在校园创业” 符合文章主旨,故选C。
C
Nietzsche (尼采) was wrong: When you gaze long enough into the abyss (深渊), the abyss does not gaze back into you. Instead, the cosmic (宇宙的) void (空白) remains silent and frightening in its vastness.
When looking at the vast emptiness of the universe, there is a temptation(诱惑)to look at our tiny world with nihilism (虚无主义). To feel that our great achievements amount to nothing. That our history fails to leave a mark. That our concerns and anxieties are pointless.
I’m a cosmologist, the kind of scientist who studies the origin, history and evolution of the universe. I have spent years working to understand what cosmic voids teach us. And in the course of my studies, I have learned to reject that temptation.
It’s true that Earth is neither large nor long-lived, but that is only one way of measuring significance. Compared with the cosmic voids, there is something special happening on our planet. Earth is still the only known place in the entire universe where conscious beings raise their curious eyes to the sky and wonder. Earth is the only known place where humans can exist. It is the only known place where laughter, love, anger and joy exist. The only known place where we can find dance, music, and art. Our disagreements and all the beautiful complexities that make us human aren’t meaningless. The experiences in our lives are special because they will never happen in the empty expanse of most of the universe.
The same lessons that cosmic voids teach us are found in the voids we encounter in our own lives. The presence of voids guarantees the opposite; they create contrast; they are full of potential. The pain we feel from loss is the last reminder of the gift of a life deeply loved. The silence before a performance is full of electric expectation. Our choice to ignore stressful news is necessary to allow us to focus on what truly matters.
Artists have long understood the power of the void. The 12th-century poet Saigyo noted that the pauses between raindrops were as important as the drops themselves. The famed architect Rem celebrated the usefulness of negative spaces, declaring, “Where there is nothing, everything is possible.”
The universe won’t do anything for us except give us the freedom to exist. It is our job to fill the universe with meaning and purpose.
8. What does the author suggest about the “temptation” in paragraph 2?
A. It reflects humanity’s fear of cosmic emptiness.
B. It strengthens people’s scientific curiosity about the void.
C. It leads people to understate Earth’s unique qualities.
D. It comes from the universe’s coldness to human existence.
9. Why does the author reject the temptation?
A. He is a cosmologist who believes science.
B. Earth remains the only known home for human experiences.
C. Human experiences differ from those in voids.
D. Earth’s small size and short life makes it unique.
10. What is the main purpose of paragraph 5?
A. To explain why voids exist in universe and life.
B. To suggest people should remove empty spaces in life.
C. To analyze how emptiness in life offers significance.
D. To prove filling empty spaces creates greater purpose.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Cosmic Voids: A Scientist’s Technical Analysis.
B. Filling the Emptiness: Finding Meaning in the Vast Universe.
C. Nietzsche Revisited: When Philosophy Meets Astronomy.
D. The Silent Universe: Why Our Existence Means Nothing.
C 9. B 10. C 11. B
根据第二段“When looking at the vast emptiness of the universe, there is a temptation (诱惑) to look at our tiny world with nihilism(虚无主义). (当凝视着浩瀚空旷的宇宙时,人们很容易以虚无主义的眼光看待我们这个微不足道的世界。)”和第四段中的“Earth is the only known place where humans can exist. It is the only known place where laughter, love, anger and joy exist.(地球是唯一已知的人类可以生存的地方。这是我们所知的唯一存在欢笑、爱、愤怒和喜悦的地方。)”可知,面对宇宙虚无时产生的诱惑会使人忽视地球作为人类情感和艺术唯一载体的独特性,故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Earth is still the only known place in the entire universe where conscious beings raise their curious eyes to the sky and wonder. Earth is the only known place where humans can exist. It is the only known place where laughter, love, anger and joy exist. The only known place where we can find dance, music, and art.(地球仍是整个宇宙中唯一已知的有意识生命仰望苍穹、心生好奇的地方。地球是人类唯一已知的生存之地。它是唯一已知的充满欢笑、爱、愤怒和喜悦的地方。也是唯一已知的能寻觅舞蹈、音乐和艺术的地方。)”可知,作者拒绝这种诱惑是因为地球依然是人类所能体验的一切事物的唯一已知的地方,人类的经历与在真空环境中的经历是不同的,故选 B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第五段“The presence of voids guarantees the opposite; they create contrast; they are full of potential. The pain we feel from loss is the last reminder of the gift of a life deeply loved. The silence before a performance is full of electric expectation. Our choice to ignore stressful news is necessary to allow us to focus on what truly matters.
根据文章最后一段“The universe won’t do anything for us except give us the freedom to exist. It is our job to fill the universe with meaning and purpose.(宇宙不会为我们做任何事情,它只会赋予我们存在的自由。
D
Go to any movie theater or sports venue, and it’s obvious there’s an invisible bond that forms from laughing, crying, and simply feeling while brushing shoulders with others. Researches have long backed up this sense of connection, but some aspects of the phenomenon remained unclear. Now, a new study is offering insight.
Writing in the journal Royal Society Open Science, Victor Chung of the École Normale Supérieure in France and his team reported how they examined the matter by inviting strangers to watch videos together in same sex pairs.
Pairs of strangers watched three types of videos together: positive, negative, and neutral (中性的) with a curtain between them that was either open or closed. At the start of the experiment the researchers asked each participant whether they’d like to meet the other member of their pair again. After watching each video, participants reported their emotions and feelings of connectedness, and after seeing all three videos they were asked once again about their feelings towards the other participant.
The results showed the emotional films generated stronger responses than the neutral film. Crucially, the team said participants’ feelings of connectedness within the pairs was boosted when they experienced more intense emotions. However, this was only the case when participants watched the films with the curtain between them open. The researchers said that whether or not the pairs could see each other had no impact on how positively or negatively they felt about the films.
“We found that silently watching emotional films together with another individual is associated with social bonding, even when this person is a stranger and without any verbal (口头的) communication,” said Chung, the study author.
The team added that the findings may help explain why people seek out group activities that generate strong emotions, “even participating in sad memorials that cause negative emotions.” In other words, because emotion bonds us, and humans have a fundamental desire to belong, we’re up for experiences one might think we’d naturally want to avoid.
12. What does “the phenomenon” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Shared emotions bond people. B. Physical touch helps tackle stress.
C. A chance encounter leads to a friendship. D. Entertainment is a crucial part of human life.
13. How did the researchers get their findings?
A. By analyzing participants’ emotions.
B. By comparing participants’ self-reports.
C. By documenting participants’ video responses.
D. By stimulating participants’ desire for interaction.
14. The study found that strong bonds were indeed created between pairs only when ______.
A. they were familiar with each other B. they watched neutral films together
C. they were aware of the presence of each other D. they could see each other while watching the films
15. What is presented in the last paragraph of the text?
A. An interpretation of the findings. B. Potential implication of the findings.
C. Supporting evidence for the findings. D. The underlying logic behind the findings.
A 13. B 14. D 15. B

根据文章第一段中“Go to any movie theater or sports venue, and it’s obvious there’s an invisible bond that forms from laughing, crying, and simply feeling while brushing shoulders with others.(去任何电影院或体育场馆,很明显,通过与他人一起笑、哭和感受,会形成一种无形的联系。)” 故选A。
根据文章第三段中“After watching each video, participants reported their emotions and feelings of connectedness, and after seeing all three videos they were asked once again about their feelings towards the other participant.(观看每个视频后,参与者报告了他们的情绪和联系感,看完所有三个视频后,他们再次被问及对另一位参与者的感受。)”
根据文章第四段中“Crucially, the team said participants’ feelings of connectedness within the pairs was boosted when they experienced more intense emotions. However, this was only the case when participants watched the films with the curtain between them open.(关键的是,研究团队表示,当参与者经历更强烈的情感时,他们之间的联系感会增强。然而,这种情况仅发生在参与者拉开窗帘观看电影时。)”可知,他们在看电影时可以互相看到对方。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段中“The team added that the findings may help explain why people seek out group activities that generate strong emotions, ‘even participating in sad memorials that cause negative emotions.’(研究团队补充说,这些发现可能有助于解释为什么人们会寻求产生强烈情感的群体活动,“甚至参加引发负面情绪的悲伤纪念活动”。)”
Have you ever wondered why it feels so satisfying to sing in the shower? You are alone. You are warm. The air is moist, making your throat feel wet.____16____ You’re at once relaxed and pleasantly energized by the water. Little can take you away from the simple tasks at hand.
根据上文“Have you ever wondered why it feels so satisfying to sing in the shower? You are alone. You are warm. The air is moist, making your throat feel wet.(你是否曾好奇过,为什么在淋浴时唱歌会让人感觉如此惬意?此时你独自一人,身体温暖,空气潮湿,这使得你的喉咙也感觉湿润)”以及后文“You’re at once relaxed and pleasantly energized by the water. Little can take you away from the simple tasks at hand. You control the speed and pitch. And the bathroom provides wonderful resonance
根据上文“Now imagine singing while driving. You are sitting, stuck by a tight seat belt that limits airflow. Without any warm-up, you probably start right in with the first song you hear. The air is drier. And to stay awake, you may be drinking coffee, which can make you thirsty.(现在想象一下边开车边唱歌的情景。
根据上文“From my personal experience, I realize the importance of not only focusing but also setting the right conditions during practice.(从我个人的经历来看,我深知在练习过程中不仅要集中注意力,还要营造恰当的练习环境的重要性)”以及后文“This is why some argue against baseball players practising hitting before a game. Nervousness in unfamiliar environments may worsen a player’s mechanics and lead to a lower batting average during the game itself.(这就是为什么有些人反对让棒球运动员在比赛前进行击球练习。在陌生的环境中感到紧张可能会使运动员的动作变得不流畅,并导致他们在实际比赛中击球成功率降低)”可知,前文提到练习时“专注和设置合适条件”的重要性,后文举例棒球运动员赛前练习可能因环境陌生导致表现不佳。本句解释不合适的练习条件的弊端。故D选项“不正确的训练可能会导致不良后果”符合语境,故选D。
【19题详解】
根据后文“To warm up, I practise deep breathing exercises and relax my tongue with “blah blah blahs”. Brightening my face, helps make my sound more energetic. My voice becomes richer and stronger when I practise opening up my mouth by yawning, imagining the back of my mouth expanding like a frog’ s. I also adjust the way I stand.(为了热身,我会做深呼吸练习,并通过“啦啦啦”这样的声音来放松舌头。

故填what。
故填an。

One possible version:
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you my volunteering in an animal shelter last Saturday. So meaningful was the experience that I would never forget it.
We volunteers did a variety of assignments, such as feeding animals, playing with them, cleaning cages and providing medical care. What impressed me most was making preparations for animal adoption. We took pictures of those stray animals, created their profiles, and posted them on the Adopt a Fur Friend website to re-home more stray animals.
Through the activity, I gained a lot. Not only did I learn to treat animals with kindness and love, but also my sense of responsibility strengthened.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure?” Grandpa’ s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video. This time, her camera swept across the leather album’s sketches of Timmy’s curved spoon and lingered on a yellowed newspaper clipping featuring his iconic stairs. As Grandfather narrated their story, she zoomed in on his hands — wrinkled yet steady — shaping a piece of wood into art. The video ended with his voice, “Hands remember stories machines forget.” By noon, comments exploded, “Hands of a legend!” “Need this magic in my home!” Shares of the video skyrocketed. Amid the flood of praise, Clara spotted a message, “I’m coming to see you soon, Master-back to where the magic began!” Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture which just matched the same grin from that faded photo.
A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. He embraced Grandfather, tears glistening. “Your spoon taught me curves have souls,” he said, placing the curved spoon on the desk. Together, they designed a signature chair — Timmy sketching modern lines on his tablet while Grandfather penciling his classic curves. Clara captured the moment: their four hands shaping a maple chair leg together, mirroring the one Grandfather had glued a week before. When Timmy posted the video, orders poured in: new chairs with curved legs, and even wooden benches for the town park. Wood shavings danced in the sunlight as the workshop came back to life, the order book’s empty February page now filled with March’s growing demands.

A. Shared emotions bond people. B. Physical touch helps tackle stress.

A. By analyzing participants’ emotions.
B. By comparing participants’ self-reports.
