Shelley grew up in the city, where her dad always drove on smooth roads and her mom only stayed in expensive hotels. When her teacher, Ms. McKay, told the class about a four-day camping (野营) trip, she just wanted to find a way to get out of it.
But there was no way out, so she ended up on the trip. Shelley tried to carry her heavy bag. It felt like a mountain she didn’t want but had to take. When they finally got to the campsite, she was happy to put it down.
Ms. McKay said to the group, “Set up your tents (帐篷) and then walk around nearby, but don’t go too far.” Shelley thought, “That’s easy!” Ms. McKay said, “For the first ten minutes, let’s walk without speaking and look at everything around us.” Shelley couldn’t believe it, could she stay quiet for ten whole minutes?
As she walked, she looked at the trees. She noticed the leaves (树叶) were not all the same green, some were dark green and some yellow-green. The trees were grey, brown or green. For the first time, Shelley felt amazed by nature and wanted to stay a bit longer.
After dinner, everyone sat around the campfire. Ms. McKay asked them to close their eyes and listen. Shelley heard leaves falling and birds singing. The sounds felt so nice and calming.
Over the next few days, Shelley enjoyed herself a lot among the trees. Ms. McKay talked about what was safe to eat in nature but asked them not to eat anything red. On the last night, they touched (触摸) nature — feeling the ground, the hard trees, and the soft leaves.

“I wouldn’t mind being a bit larger,” said Alice, “Three inches isn’t the best height to be. In fact, it’s a terrible height for a child to be.”
This made the Caterpillar angry. “It is a good height indeed.” He was exactly three inches high. “But. I’m not used to it,” pleaded Alice. “You creatures get angry so easily.”
“You’ll get used to it sooner or later,” the Caterpillar said. Alice waited for him to speak again. Before he did, he yawned and shook his body. Then he got down off the mushroom and crawled away.
① He remarked, “One side will make you grow taller and the other will make you grow shorter. “One side of what?” Alice thought. “Of the mushroom,” said the Caterpillar just as if Alice had asked the question aloud. In another moment, the Caterpillar was out of sight.

①The United Nations (UN) has decided that 2025 is the year of glacier (冰川) protection. It has also set March 21, 2025, as the first yearly World Day for Glaciers to ask everyone to help save glaciers. You can think of glaciers as slowly moving ice and snow on land. Over time, the snow adds up and turns into glacier ice. Glaciers have shaped mountains and valleys (山谷) over Earth’s history. They are still moving and hanging land in many places today.
②Glaciers are not just important for the land. The water from glaciers is also good for rivers and seas. In some places, glaciers give water to people and animals. They help keep Earth’s temperature constant (恒温). They also hold 70% of Earth’s clean water. In areas like the Himalayas, many people need glacier water to live.
③However, climate change is making problems for glaciers. Many glaciers are disappearing (消失). There will be less water for people to drink and farm. It is also bad for animals and plants. To deal with the problem, China is using smart ideas to slow down glacier melting (融化), UNESCO said.
④One idea is to use special glacier blankets (毯子) to slow melting. At Dagu Glacier, these blankets covered 500 m2 and slowed melting by 34% (2020-2021). In Xinjiang’s Glacier No.1, thinner blankets worked even better, cutting summer melting by up to 70%. The blankets block sunlight to protect the ice.
⑤Scientists also create artificial snow (人造雪) to help glaciers stay cooler and melt more slowly. In April and May 2023, scientists did this in the Bailanghe Glacier. The glacier grew 5.9 percent bigger. It is also important to watch glaciers carefully. Scientists use special devices (设备) to watch glaciers. This helps scientists know how glaciers are changing. By studying the numbers, scientists can find better ways to protect glaciers.
42.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “block” in Paragraph 4?
A.stop B.choose C.mix D.change
43.In this passage, the UN wants to protect glaciers because ______.
①they offer fresh water to people and animals
②they cover 70% of the Earth’s surface (表面)
③climate change makes problems for them
④they are important to rivers and seas
A.①② B.③④ C.①②③ D.①③④
44.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Glacier blankets at Dagu Glacier stopped melting in 2020-2021.
B.Glaciers move quickly across the land and make fast changes on land.
C.Artificial snow projects are more helpful than glacier blankets for all glaciers.
D.Studying glaciers with special devices helps find out how to protect glacier better.
45.Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage? (①= Paragraph 1)
A.B. C. D.
