UNESCO’s World Heritage List has been updated for 2024, and Europe’s newest listings, some of Europe’s lesser-known yet culturally significant sites, are well worth exploring.
Via Appia, Italy
Also known as “the Queen of roads”, this 500-mile stretch is the oldest Roman road. It connects the Italian capital to Southern Italy’s seaports and speeds the growth and development of new settlements while driving agricultural production and trade. Journeying up this road is a transportation through time, with the original paving stones reminding us of Italy’s old times.
Schwerin Residence Ensemble (建筑群), Germany
A picture-perfect image of traditional German architecture surrounded by Lake Schwerin, this cultural ensemble comprises 38 of Schwerin’s most striking landscapes and architecture. The architecture of Schwerin captures the essence of 19th-century Germany with its public gardens and cultural buildings tied together by the grand Schwerin Castle.
The Flow Country, Scotland
In Scotland lies one of the world’s most untouched blanket bog (沼泽) landscapes. With around 500,000 acres of bog pools and ancient plants, The Flow Country is one of the world’s biggest carbon stores, crucial in the fight against climate change. On foot is how you can experience the dramatic views of this lesser-known landscape and diverse wildlife species closely.
Moravian Church Settlements, Germany and UK
Gracehill was a village in Northern Ireland founded by the Moravians in 1759. Guided tours of Gracehill Old School and the Moravian Church offer visual insights into traditional, Moravian architecture. In Germany, the living Moravian heritage can be felt in the museums and church halls of Herrnhut, the birthplace of the Moravian Church.

Huang Xuhua, born in 1926 in Guangdong Province, is known as the “Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines.” His pioneering work in the 1960s and 1970s helped lay the foundation for China’s nuclear submarine (核潜艇) program, which played a key role in the country’s defense strategy during a time of intense global pressure.
In 1958, Mr. Huang was appointed as the chief designer for China’s first nuclear submarine project. At that time, China lacked the necessary technology and resources to construct such advanced submarines, and due to international isolation, the team had to rely solely on domestic innovation. Despite these significant challenges, Mr. Huang accepted the mission with determination, driven by the need to safeguard China’s maritime sovereignty (主权) and strengthen its strategic defenses. The greatest hurdle was developing a compact nuclear reactor capable of powering a submarine. With limited expertise in nuclear physics and engineering, Mr. Huang and his team worked tirelessly to design an efficient and reliable reactor, demonstrating his creativity and leadership skills.
After over a decade of hard work, Huang’s team achieved a historic breakthrough in 1970 by launching China’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the Type 091 (Han-class). This meant China became one of the few countries able to build nuclear submarines. Soon after, they developed the Type 092 (Xia-class), China’s first ballistic missile submarine, which boosted the country’s nuclear defense.
Huang’s contributions went beyond technology. His leadership inspired a generation of Chinese scientists and engineers to focus on self-reliance and innovation. Despite the heavy pressure and secrecy surrounding his work, Huang stayed committed to the project, often sacrificing personal comforts for its success. In recognition of his achievements, Huang has received many awards, including the Supreme State Science and Technology Award, China’s highest honor for scientific achievements.

( )27.Where would you most likely read this passage?

After writing 50 books, Pakistani American kids’ book author Saadia Faruqi is covering an issue she’s never explored before in her newest title, The Strongest Heart.
“This is the first time I’ve written a book that mainly talks about mental illness and the impacts it has on family life, especially on kids,” says Faruqi. “It’s a topic that’s very close to my heart and the theme is personal to me.”
Published in March, The Strongest Heart follows Mo, a Pakistani American eighth grader, as he struggles to understand his Abbu — “father” in Urdu — who has a very serious mental illness. The book is based on Faruqi’s own rocky relationship with her father, who she believes also had this condition.
Growing up in Karachi, Pakistan, Faruqi says she was afraid of her father’s episodes and often felt confused. The adults never “sat me down and explained anything. Nobody said,’ Hey, don’ t be scared.’” She hopes The Strongest Heart, intended for middle schoolers, can offer comfort and strength to young people who live with someone with mental illness at home.
When asked about what she hoped readers would take away from this book, Faruqi said,“I think the title says it all: The Strongest Heart. When things get really bad, somebody tells Mo, ‘The strongest heart is the one that’ s still beating.’ I hope that readers take away a message of courage and resilience (坚持不懈). This book is for anybody who faces hardships, who’s not in control of their own life, who’s scared or worried or anxious.”
So far, the book has earned four starred reviews. Kirkus Reviews writes: “The story is engaging, populated with appealing, well-rounded main and supporting characters. The account of serious mental illness and the complex emotions of a child whose parent suffers from it are realistic, eye-opening and moving.”
( )28.What makes The Strongest Heart different from Faruqi’s previous books?
A.It covers family issues in Pakistan.
B.It talks about her personal life in Urdu.
C.It describes her childhood life in Karachi.
D.It addresses mental illness’s family impact.
( )29.How might Mo feel about his father’s illness?
A.Puzzled and scared. B.Angry and doubtful.
C.Worried and impatient. D.Anxious and ashamed.
( )30.What does Faruqi hope readers learn from The Strongest Heart?
A.There is strength even in a struggle. B.Parents must always appear strong.
C.Mental illness should be kept private. D.People should take control of their own life.
( )31.What comment did The Strongest Heart receive?
A.Appreciation for its delicate structure. B.Disapproval of its characterization.
C.Criticism for its complex account. D.Praise for its emotional realism.

Every day, you likely hear a new piece of advice. One suggestion you may hear is to “fake it until you make it”(先假装后实现), especially if you’re starting something new, like a job. But is it really good advice?
Fake it till you make it is an expression in which a person imitates (模仿) the confidence or skills they need to succeed in what they are doing in the hope that they will eventually feel real. Advocates of this idea say you can fake confidence and hope that, eventually, it will inspire real confidence.
The best time to use this strategy may be when you’re trying to change your behavior to improve yourself. If you aim to boost your work productivity, you might draw inspiration from your more efficient colleagues. This way can help you learn strategies to enhance your performance. Similarly, in your personal life, striving to be more friendly and warm can initially feel awkward but will ultimately foster better relationships with those around you.
Unfortunately, faking it till you make it doesn’t always bring sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows. It may not work when dealing with hard skills, assisting others, or faking who you are. For example, it is incredibly hard to fake technical skills and competence like software experience. It’s also hard to assist others if you lack understanding of the subject. Moreover, pretending to be someone you’re not or making false claims can be exposed.
One study shows that it can snowball into imposter syndrome(冒名者综合征), which can arise when individuals feel their success is undeserved and fear being exposed as a fake. Unfortunately, faking it till you make it can exacerbate that syndrome, leading to avoidance and negative impacts on productivity and well-being.
In conclusion, there is a difference between learning new behaviors and lying about your identity or skills. One can build you into a better worker or friend, but the latter can get you into trouble. “Fake it till you make it” can be a useful approach for some, while it can also contribute to imposter syndrome for others.
( )32.Why do some people adopt the strategy “fake it till you make it”?
A.To criticize the behavior of others. B.To make others trust their abilities.
C.To avoid taking on new challenges. D.To gain confidence through imitation.
( )33.In what type of situation might “fake it till you make it” be ineffective?
A.When taking up a new hobby. B.When trying to stay focused in class.
C.When teaching others computer skills. D.When socializing with your classmates.
( )34.What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Worsen. B.Relieve. C.Prevent. D.Recognize.
( )35.What is the author’s main viewpoint on the strategy “fake it till you make it”?
A.It can be positive or negative. B.It is a useful tool in our daily life.
C.It is more harmful in the long run. D.It’s always good for personal growth.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Become a More Effective Listener
Being a good listener can enrich your understanding, expand your capacity for empathy, and improve your communication skills. 36 Here are some practical strategies to improve your listening skills.
Maintain appropriate eye contact.
When someone is talking to you, make and hold eye contact so they know you’ re taking in what they’ re saying. 37 Studies show the ideal amount of eye contact is about 3 seconds at a time; longer periods of direct eye contact may make the other person uncomfortable.
Minimize distractions.
Active listening requires full focus. If you’ re watching TV or scrolling TikTok while someone is speaking, they’ll likely get the impression that you’ re not really paying attention — and you’ll miss key details. 38 This demonstrates respect and engagement.
39
You might be a great listener, but your conversation partner may not realize it if you don’t show them. Nodding now and again and offering an “mmhmm” or “I see” can help them know that you care. And the occasional verbal acknowledgement that you’ re listening and comprehending can encourage the other person to keep talking.
Ask insightful questions.
Meaningful questions deepen conversations and show genuine interest. 40 This encourages the speaker to reflect and elaborate, making the discussion more productive. That’s why we should aim to use questions as a means by which the speaker can begin to reach their own conclusions about the issues being raised, without sounding judgmental or forceful.
A.Read their body language.
B.Provide proper feedback.
C.Put aside any distractions and maintain focus.
D.However, avoid staring at them the whole time.
E.However, mastering this skill requires conscious effort.
F.For example, inquire about their perspective or feelings.
G.A good listener should always offer immediate advice.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.
