If I had been asked a few years ago how I felt about exercise, I would have said that while I had a gym membership card, working out basically consisted of walking on the treadmill (跑步机) for fifteen minutes, pretending to know what I was doing with a few of the machines and weights for another fifteen minutes, and then making my escape.
This changed when life challenges forced me to seek exercise for stress relief. Recognizing my need for accountability, I joined a gym run by Adria, who became both my strict trainer and friend.
I expected that being my friend meant she’d let me relax if I just didn’t feel like attending a class, but that wasn’t the case — none of my excuses worked on her. If I didn’t show up, I would get a text asking, “What is your workout plan for this week?” She would not let me out of the commitment I made no matter how many times I tried. Before long, I noticed physical and emotional improvements in myself, and I began to look forward to going to the gym.
One day, Adria mentioned she was tired from managing her gym alone and needed a day off. I sympathized (同情) with her but was shocked when the next thing out of her mouth was “Anna, I wish you would get certified (持证的) because you are the only one I’d trust with the keys”. I shook my head, knowing that was impossible. Me? A trainer?
However, I couldn’t get her words out of my head. Weeks later, I secretly signed up for a fitness instructor course. Each time complex content and self-doubt attempted to push me to give up, I would recall Adria’s texts — I chose to make a commitment and follow through.
When I eventually walked into Adria’s gym for my work as a trainer and saw my certification on the wall, Adria said, “I’m so proud of you.” “I should be proud of having a friend like you,” I responded.
4. What was the author’s attitude towards working out a few years ago?
A. Passionate. B. Careless.
C. Committed. D. Doubtful.
5. Why did the author join Adria’s gym?
A. To deal with stress. B. To make new friends.
C. To lose weight fast. D. To keep physically fit.
6. What made the author decide to become a trainer?
A. Her strong confidence. B. Her love for fitness courses.
C. Adria’s encouragement. D. Her wish to manage a gym.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Special Gym Owner B. The Importance of Exercise
C. My Dream of Being a Trainer D. A Change in My Fitness Attitude

Working 52 hours or more per week may change the structure of the brain, research suggests. Experts found that being “overworked” may affect those parts of the brain related to problem-solving and memory, while also possibly affecting mental health.
The findings, published in the journal Occupational And Environmental Medicine, looked at the impact of overwork on specific brain regions in health workers who regularly clocked up a 52-hour week or more.
Researchers drew on data from a long-term study looking at worker health and used MRI scans to examine brain structure. Some 110 workers were included in the final analysis, most of whom were clinicians. Of these, 32 worked excessive weekly hours, while 78 worked standard hours.
Those putting in long working hours every week were significantly younger, had spent less time in work and were more highly educated than those clocking up standard hours. The researchers, including from Yonsei University in South Korea, said: “Overworked individuals exhibited significant changes in brain regions related to executive (执行的) function and emotional management.”
Analysis showed a 19% increase in left caudal middle frontal gyrus volume in the overworked group compared with the non-overworked group. This part of the brain has a major role in various cognitive (认知的) functions, particularly in the frontal lobe (前额叶). It is involved in attention, working memory, and language-related processing. Other areas involved in attention, planning and decision-making were also changed according to the scans, plus regions involved in emotional processing, self-awareness and understanding social context.
These findings provide novel brain-related evidence linking excessive working hours to structural brain changes, stressing the need for further research to understand the long-term cognitive and emotional implications of overwork.
Ruth Wilkinson, head of policy and public affairs at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, said: “The results underline the importance of addressing overwork as a health concern and highlight the need for workplace policies that reduce excessive working hours.”
8. What does the underlined word “excessive” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Highly paid. B. Strictly monitored.
C. Far too stressful. D. More than normal.
9. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Methods used for brain scanning. B. Emotional problems in clinicians.
C. Specific brain changes from overwork. D. Comparison of different age groups.
10. What can be inferred from the study?
A. Clinicians face higher brain change risks.
B. Shorter hours may prevent brain changes.
C. Younger workers prefer long working hours.
D. Overwork may cause long-term cognitive harm.
11. What does Ruth Wilkinson suggest about overwork?
A. It should be taken seriously.
B. Employers should pay more for it.
C. It should be avoided in certain jobs.
D. Workers should manage to accept it.
D
Hunter-gatherers living along the shores of the Bay of Biscay made hunting tools from the bones of at least five different whale species 20,000 years ago, the oldest evidence of humans working with whale remains.
Current findings suggest that ancient humans didn’t regularly use coastal resources for food and raw materials along the bay, in the north-east Atlantic Ocean, until about 19,000 years ago.
But we have limited evidence of how early humans used marine (海洋的) resources because the sea level has risen by around 120 meters since the Late Palaeolithic in Europe, says Jean-Marc Pétillon at the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès in France.
Pétillon and his colleagues analysed 83 previously unearthed bone tools from 26inland caves and rock shelters in southwestern France and northern Spain. These tools, which were classified as whale bone, were mostly projectile points and spear shafts used for hunting.
The team took tiny parts from each bone to analyse the chemical makeup of the collagen proteins This uncovered that only 71 tools were made from cetacean (鲸类) bones, of which 66 were definitely whales. About half of these were made from sperm whale bone, while the others were carved from fin, grey, blue and right or bowhead whale bones.
The researchers took further parts from 37 of the bone objects to determine their age. The oldest object was dated to about 19,600 to 20,200 years ago. Pétillon was surprised that these tools weren’t evenly spread through time, with most being from 16,000 to 17,500 years ago. “It’s a kind of fashion effect,” he says. “What we have is a few objects in the beginning and then a kind of boom (激增) and stop.”
12. Why is it hard to find early evidence of marine resource use by ancient humans?
A. Early humans avoided the sea. B. Many sites are now underwater.
C. Whale bones are hard to identify. D. Ancient tools were destroyed in wars.
13. What did the researchers find about the whale-bone tools?
A. The majority were hunting tools. B. All were identified as whale remains.
C. Most were used for fishing in the sea. D. Half were made from blue whale bones.
14. Why did the researchers analyze the collagen proteins in the bones?
A. To find out the age of the tools. B. To study ancient human eating habits.
C. To see if the bones were strong enough. D. To check which whale species were used.
15. What can we infer from the “fashion effect” mentioned by Pétillon?
A. Ancient humans stopped hunting whales suddenly.
B. The use of whale bones changed over time quickly.
C. Whale bones became popular due to their strength.
D. Early humans tended to follow others in tool-making.

A digital detox is just what it sounds like: limiting your access to, and use of, certain screen-based activities. The goal is to regain control over your time and attention while improving your mental health and physical well-being. Doing a digital detox doesn’t mean you need to quit cold turkey and completely disconnect from everything. ____16____ A better strategy would be to cut back gradually or limit use by a reasonable amount. Is a digital detox sounding like a great step for you? Here’s how to get started.

Are you failing to spend enough quality time with loved ones? Or are you being unproductive? ____17____ Then try to link them to your screen time and the specific apps or devices that may be causing them.

Some people feel a difference in just a few days, while others may choose a 30-day challenge or more. ____19____ For instance, if you’re so used to being online, your detox might take longer than you expected at first.
● Reflect and reward yourself
To keep yourself motivated during the detox, regularly reflect on your progress. Use a journal or an app to track your achievements. Once you reach a small milestone, give yourself a small reward. It could be enjoying your favorite snack or listening to your favorite music. ____20____
A. That isn’t very realistic.
B. Write down these negative feelings.
C. It can help you figure out what was going on.
D. You need to set yourself some long-term goals.
E. This makes the process enjoyable and keeps you going.

It was the beginning of the summer term. Everything felt the same — same teachers, same classmates, same boring announcements — except for one thing. There was a new student in our class. Her name was Anna.
Anna was quiet. She wore big round glasses and always kept her hair tied back in a ponytail. She didn’t talk much, and always sat in the last seat by the window. That spot had been mine for the whole last semester. I loved it because I could watch the clouds when lessons got boring, and sometimes write poems in my notebook without anyone noticing. Now, I was stuck in the middle row, between two noisy boys who argued about football and borrowed my pens without asking.
I didn’t know why it bothered me so much, but it did. Maybe it was because it felt like something small, something mine, had been taken away without warning. I started to avoid looking at her. I told myself it wasn’t a big deal, but every time I saw her staring peacefully out the window, I was a little annoyed. The more she looked like she belonged there, the more I disliked her — even though she had never done anything wrong.
One day, during lunch break, I walked up to her and said, “Hey, why don’t you sit somewhere else? That was my seat.” She looked up, clearly surprised, and replied softly, “I... I didn’t know. The teacher told me to sit here.” I didn’t wait for more explanation. “Just think about it, okay?” I said, and walked away. She didn’t move the next day. She kept sitting there, looking out the window like she had always belonged. I complained about her to my friends, ignored her in class, and barely spoke to her when we had to work in groups. I thought maybe if I was cold enough, she’d move. But she never did.
Then came the English group project. We had to write and perform a short play. I was actually excited about it — finally, something fun and creative. But when I saw the group list, my heart sank.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
To my annoyance, Anna was placed in my group.

On the day of the performance, we stepped onto the stage nervously, but the play went beautifully.

B 5. A 6. C 7. D

根据文章第一段“while I had a gym membership card, working out basically consisted of walking on the treadmill (跑步机) for fifteen minutes, pretending to know what I was doing with a few of the machines and weights for another fifteen minutes, and then making my escape.(虽然我有一张健身房会员卡,但锻炼基本上就是在跑步机上走15分钟,再假装会摆弄几下其他健身器材和哑铃,又耗上15分钟,然后就溜之大吉了。)”
根据文章第二段“This changed when life challenges forced me to seek exercise for stress relief. Recognizing my need for accountability, I joined a gym run by Adria(然而,当生活中的种种挑战迫使我不得不通过锻炼来缓解压力时,情况就发生了改变。我意识到自己需要有人监督负责,于是便加入了Adria经营的一家健身房。)”可知,作者是因为生活挑战带来压力,为了缓解压力才加入Adria的健身房。故选A。
根据文章第四段“Anna, I wish you would get certified (持证的) because you are the only one I’d trust with the keys(安娜,我希望你能去考个教练证,因为你是唯一一个我放心把健身房钥匙交托的人)”以及第五段“However, I couldn’t get her words out of my head. Weeks later, I secretly signed up for a fitness instructor course.(然而,她的话一直萦绕在我心头,挥之不去。几周后,我偷偷报名参加了一个健身教练课程。)”可知,Adria希望作者考取健身教练资格证的话让作者难以忘怀,最终促使作者报名健身教练课程,决定成为一名教练,所以是Adria的鼓励让作者有了这样的决定。故选C。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“This changed when life challenges forced me to seek exercise for stress relief. Recognizing my need for accountability, I joined a gym run by Adria, who became both my strict trainer and friend.(然而,当生活中的种种挑战迫使我不得不通过锻炼来缓解压力时,情况发生了转变。
C
B Employers should pay more for it.
C. It should be avoided in certain jobs.
D. Workers should manage to accept it.
D 9. C 10. D 11. A

根据第二段中“The findings, published in the journal Occupational And Environmental Medicine, looked at the impact of overwork on specific brain regions in health workers who regularly clocked up a 52-hour week or more.(这项发表在《职业与环境医学》期刊上研究,调查了每周工作时间长达52小时甚至更久的医护人员过度工作对特定脑区的影响)”可知,研究的问题是过度工作时长对大脑特定区域的影响,所以第三段划线词所在部分“Some 110 workers were included in the final analysis, most of whom were clinicians. Of these, 32 worked excessive weekly hours, while 78 worked standard hours. (大约110名工作人员被纳入最终分析,其中大多数是临床医生。其中,32人每周工作……时长,而78人工作标准时长)”中“worked excessive weekly hours”和“worked standard hours”是对比关系,指的是“超过正常的工作时长”,“excessive”的意思是“超过正常的”,与D项“More than normal”意思相近。故选D项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“Analysis showed a 19% increase in left caudal middle frontal gyrus volume in the overworked group compared with the non overworked group. This part of the brain has a major role in various cognitive (认知的) functions, particularly in the frontal lobe (前额叶). It is involved in attention, working memory, and language related processing. Other areas involved in attention, planning and decision making were also changed according to the scans, plus regions involved in emotional processing, self awareness and understanding social context. (分析显示,与未过度工作的组相比,过度工作组的左尾中额回体积增加了19%。大脑的这一部分在各种认知功能中起着重要作用,尤其是在前额叶。它参与注意力、工作记忆和与语言相关的处理。扫描显示,其他参与注意力、规划和决策的区域也发生了变化,还有参与情绪处理、自我意识和理解社会背景的区域也有变化)”可知,该段主要介绍了过度工作导致的具体大脑变化。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“These findings provide novel brain related evidence linking excessive working hours to structural brain changes, stressing the need for further research to understand the long term cognitive and emotional implications of overwork. (这些发现提供了新的与大脑相关的证据,将过长的工作时间与大脑结构变化联系起来,强调需要进一步研究以了解过度工作对认知和情绪的长期影响)”可推断,过长的工作时间会引起大脑结构变化,可能会造成长期的认知损害。故选D项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Ruth Wilkinson, head of policy and public affairs at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, said: ‘The results underline the importance of addressing overwork as a health concern and highlight the need for workplace policies that reduce excessive working hours.’ (职业安全与健康协会政策和公共事务主管露丝·威尔金森说:‘这些结果强调了将过度工作作为一个健康问题来解决的重要性,并凸显了制定减少过长工作时间的职场政策的必要性。’)”可知,Ruth Wilkinson认为应该认真对待过度工作问题。故选A项。

Hunter-gatherers living along the shores of the Bay of Biscay made hunting tools from the bones of at least five different whale species 20000 years ago, the oldest evidence of humans working with whale remains.
C Whale bones are hard to identify.
B 13. A 14. D 15. B

● Select a time period
Choose a suitable time period for your digital detox. It can be short-term or long-term.

注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
To my annoyance, Anna was placed in my group.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the day of the performance, we stepped onto the stage nervously, but the play went beautifully.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
To my annoyance, Anna was placed in my group. I sighed quietly, expecting her to stay silent or contribute nothing. But when we started brainstorming, she quietly said, “What if it’s about a girl who finds a secret garden…where time moves backward?” Her words painted pictures in my mind. The whole group fell silent, hanging onto her ideas. Anna wrote most of the script, made props out of cardboard and colored paper, and stayed late to help us rehearse. I started to see her differently. She wasn’t trying to take anything from me — she was just trying to find a place to belong.
On the day of the performance, we stepped onto the stage nervously, but the play went beautifully. Everyone remembered their lines, and the audience laughed and clapped at just the right moments. Anna, quiet as ever, performed with such quiet confidence that even I was impressed. After the show, as we walked off stage, I turned to her and said, “You were really amazing.” She looked surprised, then smiled. “Thanks. You too.” It wasn’t much, but from that moment, things felt different between us. We started talking more — and slowly, we became friends.
