I would argue instead that there has never been a greater need to explore. That’s because the stage for all exploration is the natural world, and nature is experiencing a rapid decline. It is by exploring that we understand and when we understand we develop an appreciation for 1 2 3 4 5 6 [话题语篇提升] what is found. Ultimately, only the things we appreciate are worth protecting. As the golden age of exploration weakens, and so does the richness of life on the Earth. It isn’t just that there are fewer blank areas on the map; it is that wild places and spaces have been progressively carved up (瓜分). Visiting the Okavango Delta or Kalahari Desert, for example, no longer implies a self-supported expedition(探险). Field stations pop up in important national parks and remote sensing by satellite becomes commonplace. In the next century, I believe we will need larger and wilder areas. We will need the wilderness, not just for the protection of it, but because it is an important part of the ecosystems from which we gain our necessities like clean water, food and materials. If we succeed, then expeditions—brief travels into the wild that seek to answer questions, monitor populations, and inspire action—will have a renewed sense of purpose. More importantly, they greatly help the public experience, understand and appreciate nature. Based on my own research expedition which aims to understand “edge effects”—how the changes in temperature at forest edges impact animals, I find it important that today’s scientists continue to spend time in the field. It is here that they begin to understand how seemingly unrelated environmental interactions influence their study system. Sometimes, it’s difficult to know which is important to measure until you stand out there on the forest edge. It is the young generation that is the main force to lead the next wave of expeditions. The measure of their success will be whether there are still well-preserved wild places for expeditions in the future. Their leadership is needed now, more than ever. ( )1.What’s the purpose of this text? A.To call on the public to support the study. B.To inform us about the reduced biodiversity. C.To advise people not to travel to unknown places. D.To suggest understanding nature by keeping exploring. D ( )2.What can we know about the expedition in wild spaces from Paragraph 3? A.It is difficult for explorers to make progress. B.It is more accessible with the help of technology. C.It promotes the development of satellite technology. D.It requires explorers to take sufficient heavy equipment. B ( )3.The success of future expeditions will be determined by ________. A.our knowledge of nature B.the time spent in the field C.the preservation of wild places D.the study system of young generations 【语篇解读】文章主要介绍了科学家通过实地探索来了解自然的重要性。 根据第三段中的“Visiting the Okavango Delta or Kalahari Desert, for example, no longer implies a selfsupported expedition (探险). Field stations pop up in important national parks and remote sensing by satellite becomes commonplace.(例如,访问奥卡万戈三角洲或卡拉哈里沙漠,就不再意味着自力更生的探险。在重要的国家公园里都会出现野外观测站,利用卫星进行遥感也会变得很普遍。)”可推知,在技术的帮助下,野外探险更加容易。故选B。 3.C 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“The measure of their success will be whether there are still wellpreserved wild places for expeditions in the future.(衡量他们成功与否的标准将是未来是否还有保存完好的野外探险场所。)” C。 B Widely known as the world’s first national park, Yellowstone National Park was built in 1872. Yellowstone National Park runs through Wyoming and into Montana and Idaho, bringing with it deep canyons, rivers, forests, hot springs and so on. The wonder of the world attracts millions of visitors each year because of its fantastic facts. The park has a lake named Yellowstone Lake, which is situated at 7,733 feet above sea level, making it the largest high-elevation lake in North America. The lake is about 20 miles long and 14 miles wide, with about 141 miles of shoreline. Each winter, Yellowstone Lake is completely covered with two-foot-thick ice. Aside from its unique lake, there are also about 290 waterfalls found throughout the park, including the famous Upper and Lower Falls, which end up in an area known as the “Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River”. Visitors can view the falls from several different hiking trails and walkways. With over 300 campsites and more than 900 miles of hiking trails inside the park—most of which are managed as wilderness areas—Yellowstone National Park is the perfect destination for the most adventurous kind of outdoor enthusiasts. It isn’t all difficult wilderness hiking, however, since the park also offers plenty of choices for shorterday hikes on wellmanaged trails. There are even paved hikes that are wheelchair-accessible. Also, you may see different kinds of animals along your hike in the park. Not only are there at least 67 species of mammals(哺乳动物) living in Yellowstone National Park, but there are also approximately 300 species of birds and 16 species of fishes. There’re at least two threatened species. The Canada lynx(猞猁) was listed as threatened in 2000, and parts of Yellowstone National Park are still considered as the animals’ important natural home. They were found only 112 times in the park history. What’s more, in 2018, the government restored(恢复) the protection for grizzly bears within Yellowstone National Park. ( )4.How does the text mainly introduce Yellowstone Lake? A.By listing figures. B.By making comparisons. C.By following space order. D.By following time order. A ( )5.What can we learn about the wildlife in Yellowstone National Park? A.Most of the animals are endangered. B.It’s not easy to see the Canada lynx. C.There are a small number of bird species. D.Grizzly bears are losing official protection. B ( )6.Where does the text most probably come from? A.A biology textbook. B.A history book. C.A personal diary. D.A travel magazine. 故选A。 根据最后一段中的“There’re at least two threatened species.”可知,至少有两种濒危物种,故A项错误;根据最后一段中的“They were found only 112 times in the park history.” 根据最后一段中的“approximately 300 species of birds”可知,C项错误;根据最后一段中的“the government restored (恢复) the protection for grey bears”可知,D项错误。 [2024·镇海中学检测] Despite being one of the most famous and popular attractions in the United States, 1._____. Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know. 1 2 3 4 5 6 G We don’t really know how old it is It has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago, 2._____. It suggests that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years. In all likelihood, the Grand Canyon as we know it today started out as a series of smaller canyons 70 million years ago, but the majority of the canyon did not begin to take shape until much more recently. A 3._____ Of all Grand Canyon facts, this one is pretty cool—no word-play intended. Sudden changes in altitude have an enormous impact on temperature and rainfall, so the weather you are experiencing could differ dramatically, depending on where you are in the Grand Canyon. The coldest, wettest weather station in the region is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the North Rim, while the hottest (and one of the driest) is just 8 miles away at Phantom Ranch. F There are lots of fossils in the area While the dinosaur might have missed out on(错过) seeing the Grand Canyon, lots of other fossils have been found. 4._____. They vary from ancient marine fossils dating back 1.2 billion years to fairly recent land mammals that left their remains in canyon caves about 10,000 years ago. Fish are relatively uncommon in the area Prior to modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult habitat for fish, with heavy mud, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. Consequently, only eight fish species are native to the Grand Canyon, 5._____. E C A.but a 2012 study contained a real shocker B.and many other species are found outside this area C.and six of them are found nowhere outside of the Colorado River D.The weather in the Grand Canyon is really cool E.This indicates that other creatures frequented the location F.The Grand Canyon creates its own weather G.The Grand Canyon still holds some surprises 【语篇解读】本文主要介绍了关于大峡谷的一些鲜为人知的事实。 1.G 根据上文“Despite being one of the most famous and popular attractions in the United States(尽管是美国最著名和最受欢迎的景点之一)”可知,设空处应包含美国具体的某一景点;结合下文“Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know.(以下是你可能不知道的有关大峡谷的一些事实。)”可知,G项中的“still holds some surprises”与之呼应。G项“The Grand Canyon still holds some surprises(大峡谷仍然有一些惊喜)”符合语境。 故选A。 E项中的“This”呼应上文,且E项中的“other creatures”与下文中的They相呼应。 $$
