The translator of the poem is Xu Yuanchong, a famous
Peking University professor(教授). He died at the age of 100
in Beijing on June 17th, 2021. He was widely known in China
as “the first person able to translate(翻译) Chinese, English
and French classics(经典著作) ”.
Xu Yuanchong was born in 1921. In 1938, Xu went to the
National Southwestern Associated University to study English.
There, he started to love translating.

In 1958, Xu translated his first work—he translated the
poems by Mao Zedong into English and French. However, most
of his translations came out after 1983 when he started working
at Peking University.
At the age of 93, he started translating Shakespeare's works.
Before he died, he was working on The Portrait of a Lady by
Henry James. He translated 1,000 words every day.
In nearly forty years, Xu published more than 150
translation works. His works included translations from Chinese

to English, English to Chinese, French to Chinese and Chinese
to French.
Xu's passion(热情) for translation continued until the
end of his life, just like the epigraph of The Peony Pavilion
(《牡丹亭》题词) that he translated—“Love once begun, will
