“Why?” It’s a simple question that people ask Angela Madeline frequently. After all, she began a journey that very few people would ever attempt: walk around the world alone.
The thought of Madeline’s journey did not start from a place of loss or personal crisis. She said, “I was searching for a deeper interaction with nature and people.” Walking would minimize her carbon footprint, plus the slow pace meant that she could fully engage herself in nature, and gain insights into other cultures in a unique way.
She left her hometown of Bend, Oregon, on 2 May 2016 and headed into an adventure. Along the way, Madeline would suffer from heatstroke (中暑) in the Australian desert and hear gunshots while camping in Turkey. “Still,” she said, “I didn’t stop because I was more afraid of not following my heart than I was of losing everything I owned and loved.”
Apart from that, her slow pace allowed her to be drawn deeply into other cultures. She wandered the tiny seaside villages along Italy Tyrthenian Sea, enjoying the lively atmosphere. In Vietnam, she was offered food by an elderly woman and invited to rest in her wooden house at the peak for the night. She chose an experience of uncertainty and curiosity, in search of something she could never be certain to find: a sense of fulfillment and a deeper connection.
On16 December 2022, Madeline’s pilgrimage (朝圣之旅) ended right where it started. For now, she’s working on a book, planning future journeys and creating more effective ways for women to find and express courage in their lives.
Whether a walk leads halfway around the world or just down the road, Madeline has shown the true worth of embracing (拥抱) the unknown and giving more than we receive along the way.
24.Why did Madeline decide to start her journey?
A.To get rid of personal crisis. B.To get closer to the world.
C.To reduce carbon footprint. D.To slow down the pace of life.
25.What can we know about Madeline during the journey?
A.She was about to give up. B.She was helped by Italian locals.
C.She experienced various cultures. D.She enjoyed Australian coastal scenery.
26.Which of the following words can best describe Madeline?
A.Cautious and gentle. B.Tough and adventurous.
C.Outgoing and generous. D.Open-minded and humorous.
27.What’s this text mainly about?
A.A new way to slow down life. B.A closer connection with the wild.
C.An unforgettable memory of a trip. D.A woman walking around the world.

For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smartphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report from the Pew Research Centre, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 15 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online too.
Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents if something is wrong.” Julian says. Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.
Have you ever had to enter a parent’s e-mail address when signing up for a website? That safety measure is there because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent’s permission.
This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 when there were no smartphones. “The nature of the way kids get online has changed,” FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said. When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to(适用于) mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs and services that give out users’ location.
COPPA doesn’t cover everything that can go wrong online. That’s why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online.
“There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs KidSAFE, which checks if a site meets KidSAFE standards and is safe. “It’s important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it can also be dangerous if you are not careful,” he adds.
28.Julian’s parents check his web use to make sure ________.
A.he doesn’t watch too many videos B.he doesn’t play computer games
C.he stays safe on the Internet D.he controls his online time
29.How does the author explain children’s unpleasant online experiences?
A.By describing his own experiences. B.By presenting scientific research.
C.By showing differences. D.By using examples.
30.People often hold the wrong idea that ________.
A.formal websites are always safe B.the Internet is becoming safer and safer
C.COPPA can ensure their complete safety D.daily checks prevent future online problems
31.What’s the main purpose of the text?
A.To ask parents to look out for their kids. B.To tell people to be careful online.
C.To offer tips on online safety. D.To introduce an online law.

You may not realize it, but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school. School is also the place where you learn to get on well with people. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don't like one of your classmates?
If you discover that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance. Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We cannot change the way that other people do, so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. Getting to know someone may help you understand why he does things differently. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. Tolerance teaches us to keep a temperate and open mind.
You need to remember an old saying, “Treat others how you want to be treated.” If you tolerate something, it does not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in. Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone's life easier. Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.
32.This passage is trying to tell us ________.
A.what's important for a student

34.What is tolerance according to the passage?
A.Accept people as they are.
B.Believe you are always right.
C.Expect everybody to be the same.
D.Change yourself to please other people.
35.The last paragraph suggests that ________.
A.tolerance can only be learnt at school
B.living with people of the same interests is easier
C.practicing tolerance at school can help make a better world
D.people in different countries have different interests and abilities

Do you often listen to music at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud noises for long periods of time, WHO said. 36
The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels (dB,分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
37 Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells(听毛细胞)in our inner ears. These cells detect sounds. However, listening to loud noises for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. 38
Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. 39 For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, it may sound uncomfortably loud.
WHO said the “safe level” for most sound is below 80 decibels for up to 40 hours a week. 40 .
A.This is what causes hearing loss.
B.But this can depend on where you are.
C.Loud noises are harmful to the inner ear.
D.There are different ways to protect your hearing.
E.A level of 80 decibels is roughly equal to the noise of a subway.
F.Young people are more sensitive to different sounds than elder people.
G.Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned around and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem,” Arthur said.
“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.” “Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.” “No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer. Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!” Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

Text 10:
The modern American holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908. It is on the second Sunday in May. It is a day to honor mothers. On that day mothers usually receive flowers and cards.
On the cards, children often write, “Thanks, Mom”, “To the best mother in the world” and so on. Then where did the idea for the holiday come from? We should thank Miss Anna Marie Jarvis. It is she who brought up the idea of having such a day. She lived in West Virginia. Anna’s mother was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues (问题). Her mother died on May 9th, 1905. On the anniversary of her mother’s death, she invited some friends to an informal memorial meeting. In 1907, a church service was held on her mother’s death anniversary. Anna’s love for her mother moved other people. Besides, she wrote letters to important persons of the country suggesting a public holiday to honor all mothers. In 1914, the United States Congress agreed that the second Sunday in May should be appointed as Mother’s Day. Finally, the decision was announced by President Wilson.

Hello, my name is li Hua. I'm greatly honored to share with you my experience of how music has helped me.
Have you ever been in deep sorrow wanting to do nothing? At 16, informed that my beloved grandma had been away forever, I was in low spirit for almost half a year till I came across You raise me up, a song sung by Westlife. It seized my heart! I finally got out of the haze.
As Beethoven once said, “Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.” It's absolutely true! Music encouraged me to relax my mind and soul. It's like sunshine, which always warms my heart.
Hoping that music can be your companion too. Thank you!

As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, "Stop, stop!" Thinking of the way the young man had behaved, he realized the young man might be the bank robber. So Arthur ran faster and stopped a taxi. The moment he got into the taxi, he told the driver the man shouting behind was the bank thief and asked him to drive to the nearest police station. The driver followed what Arthur said and drove away.
Paragraph2:
The taxi stopped in front of the police station, and Arthur thanked the driver and directly went in. Just as Arthur was describing what had happened near the bank on the Park Avenue and reported the young man to the police, he heard a voice outside, "Help! Help!" To Arthur's surprise, it was the young man. He had followed Arthur in another taxi. It turned out that the young man was innocent, and inside the suitcases were just some clothes. Arthur felt embarrassed, but the policemen thanked him anyway.
