With only about 1,000 animal left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone
(
克隆
)
the animal and save the endangered species
(
物种
)
. That蒺s a move similar to what a university
researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called
“
Noah蒺s Ark
”
.
Noah蒺s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos
(
胚胎
)
, semen and DNA of endangered animals
and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer,
a professor in the University Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to
reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become
extinct in over 100 years. The animal, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in
the next 25 years. This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells
from a dead female animal into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to
implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“
The nuclear transfer of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available
(
capable of being used
)
animal eggs could be a major problem,
”
Kraemer believes.
“
They will
probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy
(
having a baby
)
. It
takes a long time and it蒺s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are
certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,
”
adds Kraemer, the first鄄
ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“
They are trying to do something that蒺s never been done, and this is very similar to our work
in Noah蒺s Ark. We蒺re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their
effort and there蒺s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It蒺s a research that is
very much needed.
”

We all know what it means when a nice envelope lands in your mailbox: Someone蒺s getting
married, and they蒺re hoping that you can be there for the big day. While saying yes to the
invitation is a relatively straightforward process, things can get a bit awkward if you蒺re not so
sure about attending. 1. To help you get out of these formal engagements without
feeling awkward, we蒺ve consulted Katie Balmer, a leading wedding expert in Scotland.
Follow the format
The level of formality should be informed by the way that the invitation was sent. 2.
you should decline via post. If the message came in an e鄄mail, a simple e鄄mail expressing your
regrets will do.
Don蒺t put off your response
If you already know that you can蒺t make it for whatever reason, don蒺t hesitate to let the
happy couple know why.
“
It is very important to respond in good time. 3.
”
says
Balmer.
4.
While it蒺s a nice gesture to offer a reason for your refusal, there蒺s no need to be extreme. A
simple response will do, and it蒺s an especially bad idea to emphasize your reason if it蒺s
correlated. It will establish nothing beyond making the couple feel bad.

Paragraph 2:
Soon, it was time for us to say good鄄bye. After waving the owner good鄄bye, Priscilla and I tore ourselves away from the
bookstore. On our way back, I couldn蒺t stop smiling. We had just visited the smallest bookstore in Lisbon, met the owner
and taken a tour inside! I couldn蒺t get over all the little things that had come together to lead us there. If we hadn蒺t decided
to visit the flea market at the last minute, if I hadn蒺t insisted we turn right...That moment in Lisbon was a beautiful
coincidence to me.
