Maria Isabel Rodriguez, a trained chef and food writer, was born in Puerto Rico, moved to New York City as a baby, and grew up eating food from her homeland. She thought it would be easy to find recipes. “I went to the Internet, did some search but only found two books, which I thought immediately, ‘Wow, this is funny,’” Rodriguez said. It was at the moment that Rodriguez determined to do something to safeguard her culture.
Her idea became BoriSoul, a platform (平台) launched in 2015 to preserve her traditional food culture through stories, cooking classes and recipes. And now, that mission has turned into The BoriSoul Cookbook: Puerto Rican Recipes.
Rodriguez said that the book started coming together through her desire to interview the women in her family and learn their recipes. But when friends heard about her project, they were excited to share recipes and stories from their families. She started seeking stories and recipes from her community and got responses from around the world. The interviews she collected became The BoriSoul Cookbook, with 80 recipes from 25 women.
“The way that I brought in the culture was through the women in my family and they fed me.” They also shared lessons on life and love. “So there was the food that built my physical form. And as I was at the table, these stories were feeding the part of my soul that longed to connect, that longed to belong.”
She eventually secured a contract (合同)for The BoriSoul Cookbook from Harper Wave, an imprint of Harper Collins. About the publication, Rodriguez said. “It’s about making sure that what cost a lot to learn isn’t forgotten.”
4. What inspired Rodriguez’s idea of BoriSoul
A. Wish to be a well-known chef and writer.
B. Interest in traditional and modern cooking.
C. Lack of Puerto Rican recipes.
D. Desire for the Internet culture.
5. How did women in Rodriguez’s family help her?
A. They gave her material and emotional supports.
B. They fed her to grow up with nutritious food.
C. They funded her cookbook to be published.
D. They taught her traditional cooking skills.
6. Which of the following can best describe Rodriguez?
A. Positive and generous. B. Friendly and adventurous.
C. Creative and determined. D. Outgoing and confident.
7. Who may be the readers of The BoriSoul Cookbook?
A. Puerto Rican food lovers. B. Female publishers.
C. Experienced housewives. D. Women neighbors.

An IT company from Finland has developed a new font(字体)which uses machine learning to rewrite bad language into kinder words.
More than a third of bullying(欺凌) takes place online, and the numbers are on the rise, according to a report by the United Nations’ educational organization UNESCO. TietoEVRY developed the Polite Type font as a new tool to deal with online bullying among kids, pointing out harmful language and causing users to pick kinder words.
As users try to write hurtful English words, the font will automatically replaca them.
Writing “I hate you” would, for example, result in the milder “I disagree with you” when Polite Type is used on the computer. Sentences such as “you are ugly” is replaced with “you are not traditionally beautiful” while rude words are blurred(使模糊)completely. The company says it is the first example where a blur has been used as a symbol in a font package. Racial slurs(种族歧视语)are replaced with the racial group the slur is related to, rather than blurring the word entirely.
The vocabulary of the font was co-created with teenagers from Finland. The font’s library of words was chosen to include language from different origins, religions, and world views, and will make adjustments as more people and businesses use it. In the future, TietoEVRY suggests that machine learning could be used to teach the font to understand how language is used. Polite Type can be now downloaded and used for free.
“We want bullies to rethink the words they use and the actual meaning behind them,” said Kia Haring, global head of communication and sustainability at TietoEVRY. “I hope that our cause acts as a wake-up call for all audiences to consider how bullying could be handled.”
8. What is special about the Polite Type font according to the text?
A. It includes a wider vocabulary.
B. It consists of words and symbols.
C. It hides all the unusual expressions.
D. It prefers long sentences to short ones.
9. What can we expect of the Polite Type font in the Future?
A. It will have more words blurred.
B. More racial groups will use it.
C. It will be constantly updated.
D. Users will be charged with using it.
10. What does Kia Haring think of creating the Polite Type font?
A. Imperfect.
B. Unsuccessful.
C. appealing.
D. Inspiring.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Polite Type: the self-developing font
B. A font automatically avoids racial slurs
C. Show others kindness by using a new font
D. A font designed to fight online bullying
D
There is no such thing as a quick Web search. For example, you just want to look up one thing. But before you know it, you are likely to find more than 37 sites, and 45 minutes are likely to be wasted on what should be a 30-second exercise.
We used to waste our spare time in front of the TV. There is an old saying: No one can become successful sitting on the couch watching TV. The same is true of the Internet. And endlessly surfing the Web isn’t going to get your goals done. Nor is it going to magically make you successful. So reduce your endless surfing. But what should you do?
If you really need to get work done without being disturbed, turn off the Internet. Use “airplane mode” on your phone. If you need a better way to do that, there are software apps that will let you block certain websites for a certain amount of time. These apps can block news but still let you do your work, research, etc.
These days, information can be easily found through a click or Web search. But do you really need to know the answer to every bit of trivia (琐事) that pops up in the course of your day? Try not to immediately look everything up on the Internet. One search could end up costing you hours of time.
If you must search the Internet, set a time limit on your Web adventure. You’d better set an actual time. This can prevent you from staying online for too long. Leave the Internet immediately when you’re reminded to do that.
When you are surfing the Web, you may want to keep reading each linked (链接的) article. A great way to stop this is to save “other” articles and read them later. Use an app to save those articles. This allows you to save important information while preventing you from endlessly reading now.
12. What does the author want to show in paragraph 1?
A. A quick Web search can be helpful.
B. It’s easy for us to waste time online.
C. It takes time to find useful information online.
D There are many types of information on the Web.
13. What are the software apps mentioned in paragraph 3 used for?
A. Blocking some advertisements online.
B. Blocking some social network websites.
C. Providing us with certain websites for entertainment.
D. Preventing us from getting connected to certain websites.
14. What does the author suggest doing in paragraph 5?
A. Staying away from the Internet. B. Setting a time limit while surfing the Web.
C. Not reading other linked articles online. D. Not staying online for too long.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Some Ways to Stop Wasting Time Online
B. Some Great Apps to Help Save Time Online
C. Some Games We Can Play Online to Kill Time
D. Some Reasons Why People Waste Time Online

I’d been looking forward to a certain kind of summer. Then something happened to make those plans go in a completely different direction.
My parents and I had spent forever researching overnight summer camps online. Finally... “This camp sounds perfect!” I told my parents. “You get to design games and animate (把……制作成动画片) characters!” “The place does look great. But I don’t see anything about computers,” said my dad. I nodded and said, “The camp is really big, and they have a lot of different camps within the camp.” “Now I see,” said my dad. “And I like the idea of you exercising that clever brain of yours.” My dad filled out the form, and five weeks later, my parents dropped me off for what I thought would be a week of nonstop computer-coding (计算机编程的) fun.
I arrived at the check-in table at exactly the same time as a girl named Willow. “Perfect timing!” a counselor (夏令营负责人) named Halley said. “You two are in my cabin (小屋).— number 7. Just follow the green signs, and you’ll see it on your right.”
“It’s so cool and woodsy here,” Willow said. “I wonder if bears ever come around.”
“You just gave me the best idea,” I said. “I think I’ll base’ my characters on bears!”
Willow laughed and said, “I might be missing something here. Who are these mysterious characters you speak of?”
“You know, the characters we’ll be designing on computers this week!” I said.
“Why would we be doing computer stuff at Nature Camp?” asked Willow.
“That’s why we signed up for Tech Camp!” I smiled.
“Oh, I think I might have bad news for you,” said Willow. “This is Nature Camp. I know that for sure because I came here last year, and the kids in Tech Camp were in totally different cabins.”
“No!” I said, “I must have accidentally clicked on the wrong form on the website!”
We raced back to the welcome table to see if I could switch over to Tech Camp, but of course it was completely full.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I smiled at Willow, but I just felt so disappointed that I had to sit down for a minute.

Even though I didn’t choose the program on purpose, Willow was right.

Maria Isabel Rodriguez, a trained chef and food writer, was born in Puerto Rico, moved to New York City as a baby, and grew up eating food from her homeland.

A. Imperfect.
B. Unsuccessful.
C. appealing.
D. Inspiring.

D. There are many types of information on the Web.
B 13. D 14. B 15. A

the best way of doing sth.
故填have lived。
句中已有谓语is made,contain需用非谓语形式,The soup与contain之间是主动关系,所以用现在分词containing作伴随状语,表示与“is made with clear water”同时发生的动作。
故填more delicious。
故填which。
give sb. a deeper understanding of... 故填a。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I smiled at Willow, but I just felt so disappointed that I had to sit down for a minute.

Even though I didn’t choose the program on purpose, Willow was right.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I smiled at Willow, but I just felt so disappointed that I had to sit down for a minute. My dream of a week filled with coding and animation had vanished in an instant. Willow sat beside me, her eyes filled with sympathy. “I’m really sorry,” she said softly. “But maybe there’s something good here too. Nature Camp might not be what you expected, but it could still be fun.” I sighed, trying to shake off my disappointment. “You’re right,” I said. “I should at least give it a chance.”
Even though I didn’t choose the program on purpose, Willow was right. As the days passed, I found myself getting lost in the beauty of the natural world around me. I went on hikes and learned about different plants and animals. And to my surprise, I discovered a new passion for outdoor activities that I had never known before. By the end of the week, I realized that sometimes the best things in life are the ones we don’t plan for. Nature Camp had given me an unexpected adventure, and I was grateful for it.
