There are few things better than a cold drink on a hot summer day. However, with rising energy costs from refrigeration (制冷) each year, it's high time humanity developed a more eco-friendly way to chill drinks. Enter Delta H Innovations, a London-based company that claims to have developed the world's first self- cooling aluminum can (铝罐) — the "Cool Can".
The Cool Can looks like a normal aluminum drink can except for the large "power" button on the bottom. The base of the can serves as a hidden water container, while the space between the can's double aluminum walls holds special cooling salts. When the button is pressed, the water is released and reacts with the salts, creating a chemical reaction that rapidly chills the drink. The company claims that the Cool Can can lower the temperature of its liquid contents to about 6-7 ℃ and keep them cool for up to 45 minutes.
According to James Vyse, the founder of Delta H Innovations, the added cost to the consumer will be hardly noticeable, especially since the Cool Can significantly reduces refrigeration costs. It is fully recyclable and can be used almost anywhere. However, to make room for the self-cooling system, a 500ml-sized can holds only about 70% of the volume of a conventional can of the same size, which may slightly limit its capacity for certain uses.
Jonatan Pinkse, a professor of sustainable business at King's Business School, London, pointed out that the can uses more aluminum than regular cans, due to its double-layered aluminum design, which could result in a higher environmental footprint. While acknowledging this concern, he also noted that the potential for widespread adoption of this design could still contribute to more sustainable practices in the long run, as it could reduce the need for energy-intensive ( 耗能的) refrigeration in commercial settings such as supermarkets. This, he explained, would be especially relevant if the technology could be adopted more widely, potentially creating a shift in consumer behavior and influencing product design.

Many young children are unwilling to try new foods. For some parents, encouraging children to eat adventurously is about more than nutrition — it's about helping them embrace ( 接受) the pleasures of variety. This reflects a broader principle: openness to new experiences enriches life and increases happiness.
Neophilia, or a love of new experiences, is strongly positively associated with happiness. According to research psychologist Carroll Izard, interest — one of the two basic positive emotions (the other being joy) — is naturally sparked by exposure to new things. Individuals who are open to novelty tend to experience this positive emotion more frequently and intensely than those who avoid it.
Studies suggest that about 57% of neophilia is genetic, with certain mitochondrial enzymes linked to novelty-seeking characteristics. However, other aspects also play a role: openness tends to decrease with age, and politically progressive individuals are generally more neophilic. Higher intelligence and caring parenting styles also foster openness, while strict parenting tends to reduce it. These elements combined shape an individual's openness to new experiences.
However, people overly driven by novelty may become restless, addicted to stimulation, and trapped in cycles of constant change. While it encourages exploration and creativity, satisfaction is also hard to attain as we quickly build tolerance to new novelties. Neophiliacs often jump between projects, quit jobs, and move frequently — which, as Benjamin Storey and Jenna Silber Storey show in their book Why We Are Restless, are all things that tend to make people less content in life.
Finding a healthy degree of neophilia is key to a balanced and fulfilling life. Ultimately, neophilia is not about endlessly chasing the new. Rather, it's about cultivating a hunger for life itself, a sense of curiosity that keeps us open, engaged, and alive. The well-being associated with neophilia comes from developing an appreciation for life's diverse offerings, opening your eyes to a world of richness, beauty, and adventure. It's not about novelty itself but about the mindset that embraces life as an evolving adventure.
1. What do we know about individuals with neophilia?
A.They are more positive about life.
B.They can maintain long-term happiness.

A.Factors contributing to neophilia.
B.Benefits of developing neophilia.
C.Influences of parenting styles on neophilia.
D.Differences in neophilia across different ages.
3. What is a negative impact of excessive neophilia?
A.It reduces creative productivity.
B.It lowers adaptability to routine.
C.It prevents sustained satisfaction.
D.It results in emotional exhaustion.
4. Which of the following best reveals the author's conclusion?
A.An open mindset fosters motivation for exploring.
B.Happiness lies in embracing life with open curiosity.
C.Personal well-being depends on constant new experiences.
D.The pursuit of novelty is a key to achieving a fulfilling life.

We can learn a lot from nature. Architect Vincent Callebaut looks to our environment as a guide for designing his forward-thinking structures. His conceptual creation, Lilypad, is a perfect example.
The Lilypad is a floating island inspired by the Victoria amazonica, a giant water lily (睡莲) whose leaves can grow up to nearly 10 feet. Their veins ( 静 脉 ) spread out from the center, forming a strong yet lightweight structure. Callebaut adopted this natural principle in the city's framework, creating a self- sustaining urban ecosystem model that helps Lilypad float and remain stable while minimizing material use. The outer shell of the city copies the form of a seashell, capable of absorbing air pollution and reducing its ecological footprint.
The Lilypad project aims to address climate change, particularly the threat posed by rising sea levels to low-lying areas. It would function as a mobile, floating city that could hold up to 10,000 people. By floating with ocean currents and adapting to natural forces, Lilypad avoids the destruction that traditional cities in flood-risk areas face. Its flexible design allows it to adjust to changing sea levels, offering a practical solution to climate change challenges.
The city relies on renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, tidal and biomass power, to achieve energy independence. Lilypad is also designed to have a central freshwater lake for rainwater collection and purification. The structure features harbor and mountain "zones" where people would work, shop, and be entertained. This approach reduces the need for long commutes, thereby lowering energy consumption and carbon emissions. Planned housing would be surrounded by floating gardens and connected by organically designed streets, which creates an eco-friendly environment for residents to live in.
"In short," Callebaut concludes, "Lilypad transforms climate challenges into opportunities through a design inspired by nature, where every element works in harmony with the environment." It is not just a vision for future urban living but a tribute to the wisdom of nature, showcasing the potential for a harmonious relationship between architectural design and ecosystems.

4.A
故选A项。
According to research …those who avoid it."
2.A
故选A项。
3.C
While it encourages exploration …to make people less content in life."
