An Inspiring Story
I’d like to share an uplifting story of my best friend, Judy, which keeps inspiring me to
this day.
Judy has dreamed of becoming a professional dancer since she was a little girl. Sadly,
due to her small size she was often laughed at. However, she stayed positive and spared no
pains to practice day and night, never giving up. Luckily, her hard work and perseverance
paid off when she eventually seized the opportunity to perform in the national dancing
competition on behalf of her school.
Judy’s story serves as a reminder to me and I hold firm belief that I can turn dreams
into reality like her. Whatever obstacles I may encounter, my friend’s journey inspires me to
pursue my goals with great determination and courage.

Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous
carnival for many years, so I was excited. However ,the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so
many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time and about two million
of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sister’s friend Ronnie. He said he would take
care of me and show me around at the carnival. He did not let me down.
Well, the carnival is all about the samba. It’s a style of music and dance which has its origins in Africa. Lots of Africans
were used as slave labor by the Portuguese when Brazil was being conquered, so this mixed culture of African, Latin and
European styles is really strong here. Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums and harmonic vocals(和
声).It’s the kind of music that you couldn’t help dancing to. And I was learning that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd,
I couldn’t help moving my hips and shoulders.
Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the
championship, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by
making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if
they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come.
So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. Ronnie and I never made into the Sambadrome.
We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I
regret missing the main parade? Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.
24. How did the author feel once she arrived at the carnival?
A. Disappointed B. Anxious C. Excited D. Annoyed
25. What can be known about samba in Paragraph 2?
A. It has a strong mixed culture. B. Its music is always fast but soft.
C. It is not to the taste of the author. D. It has its origins in South America.
26. Why didn’t the author regret missing the main parade?
A. She met some amazing local people. B. She gave her own parties in the street.
C. She celebrated the festival in a local way. D. She didn’t have the tickets for the parade.

A problem has been annoying you for days — you just can’t solve it, and it’s driving you crazy. But then you go for a
walk and suddenly the answer flashes right into your head! It’s a great feeling and this link between exercise and creativity
(创新) has been studied by scientists around the world.
Dr. Chong Chen and his team from Japan’s Yamaguchi University wanted to find out how different types of physical
activity can help us solve problems and think creatively. They looked at 21 past studies from places including the US, the
UK, Spain, Sweden, China, India and Japan. The studied exercises included walking, running, cycling, dance and yoga.
In fact, Chen and his team found that it was natural walking that almost always had a positive effect on people’s
creativity — even if it was just walking inside a room or going up and down some stairs, for as little as three to four minutes.
Dance is also good. Most of the studies Chen’s team looked at found that dance helps significantly with
creativity—particularly among adults. However, the results for yoga were unclear. And low-intensity aerobic exercise (低强
度的有氧运动) like cycling was not found to have an effect.
There were some advantages from right and energetic aerobic exercise, however, but “too much effort” exercise
seemed not to have a mostly positive effect. That is to say, the hardest exercise actually didn’t give the best results. So
completely tiring yourself probably won’t help your creativity!
Chen wrote that his team’s findings could be used in schools and businesses by including short periods of physical
activity during the day to encourage creative thinking. It’s not even about keeping fit, Chen says — you just have to move!
As he said, “Knowing that just a few minutes of walking, or other low-intensity physical activity can increase creative
thinking should make getting up to move seem more worthwhile.”
28. Why did Dr. Chong Chen look at the past studies?
A. To know about the relation of exercise and creativity.
B. To encourage people from other countries to think creatively.
C. To learn if people take part in exercises in different countries.
D. To explain why different types of physical activity are important.
29. What can we know from their findings?
A. The harder people exercise, the better results are. B. Proper walking can help people with creativity.
C. Yoga and cycling didn’t have a positive effect. D. Adults like to dance to improve their creativity.
30. What advice did Chen give to schools and businesses?
A. They should use his findings. B. They had better keep healthy.
C. They can work with each other. D. They need just begin exercises.
31. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Exercises and creativity. B. Feelings and activities.
C. Findings and advantages. D. Researchers and studies.
