B A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. A teacher read out numbers — 74,470, 70,809 and 98,402 — and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the questions correctly. The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (算盘). Stevenson used a practice called the “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work out the problems. From watching Stevenson, I knew that acquiring a skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads (珠子), so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My normal solution was escape, and if I had to calculate something, I would go online. Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, founder of geometry (几何学), but the practice reduced my fear. Confidence grows easily on the device, and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and results appear to go hand in hand. My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once confused her, while my older child took her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teachers. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence. 4.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph? A.To prove the difficulty of math. B.To introduce the topic of the abacus. C.To show the cleverness of Stevenson. D.To stress the importance of abacus learning. 5.What do we know about the author from Paragraph 3? A.He was weak in math. B.He was good at computers. C.He regarded math as useful. D.He had a close relationship with kids. 6.What did the author realize from his learning experience? A.All roads lead to Rome. B.It’s never too late to learn. C.Faith can move mountains. D.Practice makes perfect. 7.What is the best title for the text? A.The Secret to My Success B.A Rough Ride — Learning Math C.The Power of Learning the Abacus D.The Abacus — an Ancient Technology C New research from the University of South Australia (UniSA) highlights a critical but often overlooked factor in student success — wellbeing. In the study of more than 215,000 students, researchers from UniSA found that while standardized tests measure academic skills, different dimensions of wellbeing — emotional wellbeing, engagement, and learning readiness — can play a crucial role in performance. Specifically, the study found that learning readiness, which includes foundational skills such as perseverance, confidence, and engagement, was not just a desirable outcome, but a catalyst for academic success. “When we talk about learning readiness, we mean how prepared a child is to learn, not just academically, but also in their ability to stay focused, to overcome challenges, and believe in their ability to succeed,” says UniSA researcher Dr Rebecca Marrone. “It’s about having good learning habits, and a motivation to learn, which together can help them perform better at school.” This study draws on data from the South Australian Wellbeing and Engagement Collection (WEC) to assess the impact of student wellbeing and engagement of students in Years 4 — 10, and their academic achievement in tests between 2016 and 2019. The results show that schools need to shift towards a model that values both student wellbeing and academic achievement as vital components of education. UniSA’s Benjamin Lam says, “Student learning is complex, and it is affected by a range of contextual and individual differences. When students are mentally and emotionally healthy, they’re more likely to be engaged and motivated and perform better academically. But the relationship is certainly not linear (线性的), and we can’t infer that low-achieving students have low levels of wellbeing, or high-achieving students have high levels of wellbeing.” “This means that schools must look beyond test scores and take a more personal, holistic (整体的) approach to supporting students,” adds Lam. “They can do this by adopting learner profiles that include wellbeing and engagement metrics (指标) alongside traditional grades, so that schools can better understand and respond to each student’s needs.” 8.What does the underlined word “catalyst” in paragraph 2 mean? A.Definition. B.Estimator. C.Facilitator. D.Certificate. 9.What does Dr Marrone try to explain in paragraph 3? A.The benefits of good habits. B.The way to pick up readiness. C.The internal motivation to learn. D.The concept of learning readiness. 10.What do the researchers do for the study? A.They analyze student-related data. B.They organize happiness-themed tests. C.They design various education models. D.They interview students for more than 4 years. 11.Which of the following does Benjamin Lam approve of? A.A holistic education mode is far from practical. B.Student learning is less complex than expected. C.More engaged students are emotionally healthier. D.Schools shouldn’t just focus on traditional grades. D The ability to connect an event with its consequences — experts use the term associative learning — is a crucial skill for adapting to the environment. Recent findings show that adults fail to demonstrate the highest learning performance in this area. This paves the way for a fresh perspective on associative learning disorders, which are linked to the development of mental illness later in life. Researchers from Ruhr University Bochum conducted groundbreaking experiments across four age groups: babies (0-3), primary school children (6-12), teenagers (13-19), and adults. Participants were required to identify patterns between visual pictures and corresponding rewards through computer-based tasks. Several learning sessions were then integrated to assess performance stability. The research team was amazed by the results: “We’d initially assumed that associative learning improves continuously with increasing age,” says Dr. Carolin Konrad. However, there was a clear peak in performance at primary school: “Children at this age achieved the best results, learned most consistently and showed the least variability in their learning behavior.” Although adults and teenagers learned faster than babies, they didn’t reach the performance level of primary school children. It also emerged that repeated exposure to the learned material plays a crucial role for babies and teenagers since an additional learning session led to an improvement in learning performance in these age groups. Teenagers improved 40% after additional practice sessions, whereas adults showed minimal progress. This finding highlights the “sensitive period” phenomenon — the brain’s higher plasticity during childhood that allows more efficient knowledge strength. The study shows that associative learning is present across the lifespan but that the rates and quantities of learning vary. “This mental capacity not only helps us avoid dangers but also influences emotional regulation patterns,” concludes Konrad. “Early identification of association of associative learning difficulties could serve as an indicator for future mental health risks.” 12.Which is an example of associative learning? A.A baby grasps an object placed in its hand. B.A student works harder after getting good grades. C.A driver keeps speeding up when receiving a ticket. D.A cook follows his recipe despite customer complaints. 13.What were the participants required to do in the experiments? A.Identify the relationship between different groups. B.Watch and record their own performance over time. C.Assess their learning progress during the sessions. D.Pair pictures with rewards through computer-based tasks. 14.What surprised the researchers about associative learning? A.Adults possessed greater adaptability. B.Primary schoolers outperformed others. C.Teenagers peaked in learning performance. D.Babies required frequent exposure to knowledge. 15.Why is the “sensitive period” phenomenon mentioned in paragraph 4? A.To show learning ability differences across all ages. B.To advise adults to learn efficiently in a gradual way. C.To stress the significance of learning during childhood. D.To demonstrate the brain’s ability to adapt in adulthood. Learning a new skill can make you feel worried and not confident. The research, the schedules, the practice, and overcoming the difficulties can all sound like too much. 16 You can spend as little as 15 minutes every day to achieve the goal you wish to reach. Learning new skills doesn’t have to be so hard. Learning a new skill doesn’t mean you have to go back to the 6-hour days you have at school. 17 And you can create your own schedule and watch the lessons whenever and wherever you want. Learning a new skill can explore your interests. 18 On the contrary, you are free to choose any topic or activity that you want to learn about. Whether it is gymnastics, golf, astrophysics, or sewing, you have the opportunity to learn about it and get skills in a new activity. Research a variety of topics and think about which ones interest you the most. 19 Signing up for a new online course, communicating with new people, and asking the teacher direct questions take confidence. Interestingly, 64% of Americans say that they meet new people and make friends while learning a new skill. Making friends with other learners can help to build your confidence so that you can then communicate more confidently with the teacher. Learning new skills helps fill your time. People have been looking for ways to fill their free time in a variety of ways. 20 Meanwhile, some prefer to make protective equipment for hospital staff. If you are still struggling to find something to do, learning a new skill can be fun and fill the time. A.You’re not tied to a choice of topics. B.This can benefit your physical health. C.Learning new skills can build your confidence. D.Learning new skills makes you an active learner. E.Some families enjoy having picnics in their back garden. She had no kids of her own, but she loved children. She treated her students like her own and devoted her life to teaching. Of all her students, Ms. Lane was particularly fond of a brilliant boy named Brandon. He always passed her tests and impressed crowds with his physics exhibitions. “You’ll make a great physicist, Brandon. Keep at it, and you’ll do well!” she would inspire him, her eyes soft like a mother’s. Brandon would nod and tell his favorite teacher that he would love to become a physicist one day. Unfortunately, when Brandon got to his senior year in high school, his grades started to slip because of recently having lost his mother. Ms. Lane wanted to try talking to Brandon to assure him he was not alone. However, no matter how hard she tried to speak to him, he remained reserved and had difficulty opening up about how he felt. One weekend, Ms. Lane went on her monthly supermarket trip. She parked the car in the big parking lot in front of the store, and that’s when she noticed Brandon sleeping on the ground next to where all the grocery carts were parked. She saw that the area was filled with homeless people who were waiting by the store for people to hand out donations to them. “Brandon?” Ms. Lane said as soon as she left her car. “What are you doing out here?!”At first, Brandon wanted to get up and run away, but it was too late. Ms. Lane was already helping him up the ground. “Come inside the store with me.” Brandon hesitated, but he decided to obey his teacher out of respect. They went inside the store, where Ms. Lane bought him a hot meal and some drinks. “What happened to you, dear?” she asked him. “When my mom died, my father suddenly turned up at home with another woman who said I should go live with folks who actually want kids. I didn’t like it that he instantly replaced Mom, so I ran away from home. I’ve been sleeping at the parking lot for several days now, but my dad never cared to look for me,” Brandon said. Ms. Lane felt terrible for her brilliant student. Thinking about what he just said, she had an idea. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ One day, Brandon received a prize that only top physicists in the world could receive. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ Unit 1 RELATIONSHIPS单元测试 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. A We are pleased to announce that our annual School Cultural Festival will be held on June 10th, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the school hall. 根据第二段“Specifically, the study found that learning readiness, which includes foundational skills such as perseverance, confidence, and engagement, was not just a desirable outcome, but a catalyst for academic success. 根据第三段““When we talk about learning readiness, we mean how prepared a child is to learn, not just academically, but also in their ability to stay focused, to overcome challenges, and believe in their ability to succeed,” says UniSA researcher Dr Rebecca Marrone. “It’s about having good learning habits, and a motivation to learn, which together can help them perform better at school.” 根据第四段中“This study draws on data from the South Australian Wellbeing and Engagement Collection (WEC) to assess the impact of student wellbeing and engagement of students in Years 4 — 10, and their academic achievement in tests between 2016 and 2019. 故选A。 11. 根据最后一段中的““This means that schools must look beyond test scores and take a more personal, holistic (整体的) approach to supporting students,” adds Lam. D。 D The ability to connect an event with its consequences — experts use the term associative learning — is a crucial skill for adapting to the environment. 根据第一段中的“The ability to connect an event with its consequences — experts use the term associative learning — is a crucial skill for adapting to the environment.(将事件与其结果联系起来的能力——专家称之为联想学习——是适应环境的一项关键技能。)” 根据第二段中的“Participants were required to identify patterns between visual pictures and corresponding rewards through computer-based tasks.(参与者需要通过计算机任务识别视觉图片与相应奖励之间的模式。)” 根据第三段中的“However, there was a clear peak in performance at primary school: “Children at this age achieved the best results, learned most consistently and showed the least variability in their learning behavior.” Although adults and teenagers learned faster than babies, they didn’t reach the performance level of primary school children.(然而,小学阶段的表现出现了明显的峰值:“这个年龄段的孩子取得了最佳成绩,学习最稳定,学习行为的差异性最小。” 根据倒数第二段中的“This finding highlights the “sensitive period” phenomenon — the brain’s higher plasticity during childhood that allows more efficient knowledge strength.(这一发现突显了“敏感期”现象——儿童时期大脑具有更高的可塑性,这使得他们能够更高效地巩固知识。)” Learning a new skill can make you feel worried and not confident. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Thinking about what he just said, she had an idea. Ms. Lane looked at Brandon with deep concern and care in her eyes. “You can stay with me for a while,” she said gently. Brandon was shocked. He didn’t expect anyone to offer him a home, especially not his teacher. “You don’t have to go through this alone,” she continued. Without waiting for his reply, she drove him to her house. From that day on, her small home became his safe haven. She gave him food, a bed, and most importantly, love and support. Slowly, Brandon began to open up, and his grades improved again. With Ms. Lane’s guidance and care, he found hope and purpose once more. One day, Brandon received a prize that only top physicists in the world could receive. As he stood on the stage, holding the award, he looked out into the crowd and saw Ms. Lane smiling proudly at him. After his speech, he walked straight to her and hugged her tightly. “Thank you,” he whispered. “I wouldn’t be here without you.” In that moment, both of them knew that it wasn’t just about physics — it was about kindness, belief, and the deep bond between a teacher and her student. Ms. Lane had given Brandon more than a place to live; she had given him a second chance at life and a path to greatness. 词汇激活 行为类 ①提供:offer /provide/supply ②继续:continue/go on ③拥抱:hug/embrace/clasp 情绪类 ①震惊的:shocked /astonished/stunned ②自豪地:proudly /with pride /gloriously 【点睛】[高分句型1] As he stood on the stage, holding the award, he looked out into the crowd and saw Ms. Lane smiling proudly at him.(运用了as引导时间状语从句以及现在分词holding作状语) [高分句型2] In that moment, both of them knew that it wasn’t just about physics — it was about kindness, belief, and the deep bond between a teacher and her student.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
