第四部分写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
One possible version:
Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, Principal of Guangming High School. Thrilled to receive your email regarding the proposed online Sino-British cultural exchange activity, I wholeheartedly approve of this wonderful idea and am eager to share my thoughts.
This initiative is of great significance. It serves as a valuable platform for students from both schools to gain in-depth insights into each other’s cultures. By exchanging stories about traditional customs, festivals, and modern lifestyles, students can broaden their horizons and cultivate cross-cultural awareness. Moreover, it offers an excellent opportunity for language immersion. Our students will have the chance to improve their language proficiency in a practical context. This activity will undoubtedly strengthen the friendship between our two schools and open doors for more future collaborations.
I’m looking forward to further discussions on the event arrangements.
Yours,
Li Hua
笫二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
“Quick, get some wet paper towels to make it come off,” said Judy, springing into action. But after vigorous rubbing, my name still remained and I felt really crazy, “Why won’t you disappear?” I choked out, watching my name cling stubborn as tattoos. Precious minutes were ticking away. We rubbed furiously with more paper towels and my name eventually came off. However, in the process of removing it, we left some erasing marks on the chalkboard. Before we could deal with it, the other students began entering the room, and we had to slip into our desks. (80 words)
Mrs. Eiffler walked in soon afterward, but she didn’t seem to notice the erasing marks. However, I did. Every time I walked past the blackboard, I remembered. After hours of wrestling with myself, I told Judy and Karen my decision – tell Mrs. Eiffler the truth. After a short hesitation, they two went to the teacher’s office with me to confess our mistake. To our surprise, Mrs. Eiffler didn’t punish us but instead praised us for our honesty. From this lesson, I came to realize that “No one will ever know” is never true. Even if no one else found out, I knew. Sometimes living with a guilty conscience is punishment enough. (96 words)

Text 1
W: Do you go to the cinema a lot, Martin?
M: I used to go quite often, Grace, but lately I just haven’t found the time and the cinemas aren’t quite as big here. Therefore, I do yoga at home for relaxation.
Text 2
M: We need to choose what we want to eat. I think the waiter is getting impatient.
W: It’s not my fault. There are so many things on the menu, but I think I’ve decided now. Call him over.
Text 3
W: Hello, Valley Medical centre.
M: Hi, would it be possible for me to see Doctor Granger, please?
W: I’m sorry, Doctor Granger has left. I can fit you in with Doctor Morris at 8: 00 am. on Thursday if that’s OK.
M: Yes, that’s fine.
Text 4
M: I just had an email from the hotel. They are asking if we enjoyed ourselves there last week. Plus, they are offering us a discount if we book to stay there again.
W: I’d like to do that. I loved the view from our room and the meals were excellent.
Text 5
W: Once I’ve finished marking these math books and sent some grades to the head teacher, I’ll make dinner.
M: When will that be? I am starving.
W: Not too long. How about you go up to your room and do your homework in the meantime?
Text 6
W: Frankie, I’ve just made some cookies. Your sister Claire said they taste amazing. Why don’t you take a break and eat some, too?
M: Okay, some time later.
W: You’ve spent too much time doing your homework. Don’t push yourself too hard.
M: Thanks, Mom, but this is how I relieve my stress. Ashley got an “A plus” in the last math test. I only got an “A”. I will not let myself fall behind again.
Text 7
M: Hi, Lucy. How are you? I was wondering …
W: Oh, no! That usually means you want something.
M: No, well, not exactly. I’m going to a wedding and I could go on my motorcycle, but you know how it is best suit and all that.
W: So you want to borrow my camera? You kept it for weeks last time.
M: Well, actually I was wondering if I could use your car.
W: Why don’t you take a taxi?
M: Oh, OK, I guess I don’t have much choice.
Text 8
W: Brian, have you heard that Mr. Giddings will be awarded the prize for Best Car Design at the Hyatt Hotel next week?
M: Yes, but I thought either Mr. Zarba or Ms. Miller would win. I feel they are more talented than Mr. Giddings.
W: They are excellent designers, too. The competition must have been fierce. Will the winner receive a lot of money?
M: Maybe, I don’t know. By the way, do you know where the Hyatt Hotel is?
W: It’s right across from the Bellagio Department Store on Granville Avenue, on the left side of a bank. The hotel just opened a week ago. I’ve heard they provide excellent food and service. Are you going to attend the ceremony?
M: Right.
W: Then why don’t we go together?
M: Good idea.
Text 9
W: Jack, tell me about yourself.
M: I was born in Los Angeles, but my family is from China. My father came to US to study. He got a PhD in computer science and he stayed on as a professor at college in California.
W: Is your mother from China, too?
M: Yes, my mom is from the capital of China. She is an Asian American. Her folks came to the US during the 19th century. In fact one of her great grandfathers actually helped build the first railroad across the United States in the 1860s. What about you?
W: Well, I’m a third generation Mexican American. My grandparents were born in Veracruz and they immigrated to this country a long time ago. We still have a lot of relatives in Mexico.
M: Do you keep in touch with them?
W: We visit them whenever we can.
M: By the way, how is your Spanish?
W: It's pretty good. We speak it at home most of the time. Do you speak Chinese?
M: Yeah, I'm quite fluent in it. And I am now busy learning to write it. I think someday I may go to China and take up my career there.
Text 10
Welcome to the Science Museum. It is a seven floor giant’s toy box. Children of every age find it amazed on seeing its exhibits whose subjects cover art, energy, environment, medicine, biology, space and transport. Entry is through the Energy Hall on the ground floor which has full size rockets, satellites and airplanes on the roof and cars on the walls. The first steam engine, Stephenson’s Rocket, stands on the first floor amongst other exhibits. The exhibits are educational and many are interactive – there are plenty of buttons to push, levers to pull with sometimes explosive effects. The whole experience is inspiring and exciting. The Science Museum is open every day (except 24-26 December) and entry is free. Charges may apply to the Imax Cinema and some special exhibitions. Its opening hours are 10 to 6 p.m. daily. It often opens an hour later in school holidays. Its address is Exhibition Rd SW7 2DD and it is 9 minute walk from the nearest underground station, South Kensington.

About five years ago,I was part of a pilot group for my boss tasked with
figuring out how to hire and mentor (people with disabilities and make them
successful inside the organisation. My boss was very kind and he decided to be the
executive sponsor for the pilot.Until then we had only hired people with visually
challenged disability.
I led the interview process and hiring of a candidate with an autism (
disability. The candidate had the qualifications but our interview panel felt that the
disability would prevent him from learning the skills and being successful in the
role.
I convinced my peers to give him a role, and try out-after all,it was a pilot
program meant for our organisation to learn too.I gave the candidate a lot of
encouragement and I became one of his mentors. Our HR department was not too
supportive to take some risks so we could only hire him as a temporary contractor.
The candidate slowly and surely blossomed in the workplace. There were many
bumps along the way but the candidate came to be accepted by his colleagues and
his leadership.I continued to mentor him closely and helped him to get around a
number of challenges his disability presented at the workplace and home. The
candidate too won many friends and admiration at the workplace.
Fast forward five years,he called me last night to let me know that he got a
formal offer yesterday from his manager as a regular employee with a job title.
I congratulated him and told him my joy knew no bounds on his success. He
went on to say"Sir,without your support all these years,I would not be here".I told
him "Your success is the reward of your hard work and persistence. You are an
inspiration to a lot of people with similar disabilities."
Isn't it wonderful that a person with disability is thriving in a workplace and
makes his family so proud?

Have you ever heard the phrase"net-zero hero"?A net-zero hero is someone
who fights climate change through the choices they make in life, such as putting
solar panels on their roof or driving an electric car.The story of a net-zero hero is
meant to inspire the rest of us to do our bit to help the world.
It sounds good, but a recent study from the University of Sydney suggests that
the story of the net-zero hero is being used by energy companies to avoid their own
responsibility for global carbon emissions.
The study looked at hundreds of public documents from energy companies in
Australia that were published between 2015 and 2022.It found examples of the
net-zero hero story in many press releases and public reports. These suggested that
small actions, like turning off unneeded electrical appliances or using more efficient
ones, were important in the fight against climate change. However, these documents
tended to diminish the energy industry's own role in reducing emissions.
In reality, the energy industry is the largest producer of global carbon emissions,
producing about 40%according to the World Bank.Tom van Laer,an associate
Professor of the University of Sydney Business School and also a co-author of the
study, explained that the energy companies'narrative simplifies the climate crisis.
"It places too much responsibility on individuals, and ignores the bigger picture of
business and government responsibilities essential for meaningful climate action,"
he said."While individual actions are valuable, they cannot replace systemic
changes that address the root causes of climate change."
This study serves as a call to rethink climate responsibility. To truly address the
climate emergency, society must move beyond the "net-zero hero"myth and
demand transformative action from industries and governments.Only then can we
achieve sustainable progress in fighting climate change

likely to be taken over by AI.But according to a recent study, this is not so,as
non-experts rate AI poetry higher than poetry written by humans.
The researchers chose 10 famous poets:Samuel Butler,Geoffrey Chaucer,
William Shakespeare...They then asked ChatGTP 3.5 to write poems in the style of
each poet. And they asked the participants, who were not experts,to rate the work on
14 scales,like profundity,rhythm,originality,imagery,beauty,emotion,and overall
quality.
What was surprising indeed is that most of these non-experts,when they were
not told whether a poem was composed by AI or by a human systematically, ranked
the ones that were actually written by AI higher than the ones written by humans.
What does this experiment show exactly? The researchers are very clear that
these findings were limited to non-experts.The research team's own explanation has
to do with participants'lack of expertise, concluding that these non-experts preferred
the AI poetry because it was less complicated, and more straightforward.
This must be part of the story, but it's not the whole story.Take another deeply
human endeavor,wine-tasting,as an example. It was first reported that non-experts
are very bad at making the simplest distinctions about wine, but shortly afterwards it

was found that experts make the same kind of mistakes and sometimes they in fact
made more mistakes.
Plus,it is usually tricky to do experiments on aesthetic (appreciation.
This experiment was about the participants'self-report about their experiences and,
as we know from literally thousands of studies,self-reports can be misleading in
most contexts. So this experiment was not about the real aesthetic experience of
poetry, which is what really matters. It was about what participants thought about
their aesthetic experience.
The study is important and creative. But it doesn't show that promising poets
should abandon their passion.Not yet,anyway.
