It has been five years since I left my staff job and became self-employed. I remember my
terror as I walked out of the office for the last time and the excitement when I sold my first piece
days later. Working for yourself, setting your own hours and being responsible for your success
or failure are exciting. I left my job just as summer was starting, and my first few months were
as blissful as the fair days.
When winter came, an office where someone else paid for the central heating and my salary
was guaranteed seemed attractive. January is tough for freelancers (自由职业者) , and it was no
different for me — after masses of work, I earned none. I shared my fears with some
businesswomen I knew — what if the reality was more like what I was experiencing?
Whether through choice or circumstance, the number of freelancers is rising and, if you’re
just starting out, it is scary. I’ve been lucky that these women making money their own way
shared key lessons about what it takes. You can’t feel half-hearted about what you do because, at
some point, you’re going to have painful days. When that happens, you have to remember why
you wanted this life in the first place. Don’t quit your job for something you think might be more
interesting, quit it for something you can’t stop thinking about.
Setting up a business is tough. Rather than waiting until all is perfect, go for the moment
when it feels as if momentum (势头) is with you. Look after yourself. There is no sick pay when
you are self-employed. You can’t do a bad day’s work and blame it on your boss. You are the
backbone of your business and you need to prioritize your health and well-being. Rest regularly
and find like-minded people to support you and lift you up when things get hard.
Finally, enjoy it. Freedom is yours and, if you can make it work, there is nothing better.
24. What does the underlined word “blissful” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Pleasant. B. Challenging. C. Awful. D. Boring.
25. What bothered the author when winter came?
A. The cold weather influenced her working performance.
B. She eventually realized freelancing wasn’t to her taste.
C. She couldn’t even earn enough to meet daily basics.
高二英语 第 5 页 共 11 页
D. Masses of freelancing work brought her much anxiety.
26. According to the author, why should we quit for a new job?
A. To escape from the current pain. B. To satisfy our temporary interests.
C. To explore where our strength lies. D. To pursue what we really desire.
27. What’s author’s probable attitude towards becoming freelancers?
A. Critical. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Unclear.

The male western tanager (唐纳雀) looks like a little flame, while females are less showy, a
dusty yellow. In the spring, they prepare to move thousands of miles to the Mountain West of
Central America, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards.
To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as
global climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at
their destination after what’s known as “green-up”, when flowers begin blooming and insects
emerge. According to a study published in early March in the journal PNAS, this kind of timing
mismatch between migrants and their food sources, which is happening across North America,
could have serious consequences for migratory birds’ survival. “In discussing climate change,
we often focus on warming,” says Scott Loss, a co-author of the study. “But the length and
timing of seasons—like when winter ends and spring begins—are some of the most dramatic
effects of climate change.”
Loss and his colleagues used satellite imagery from 2002 to 2021 to calculate the average
start of spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species,
and then compared that timing with the current green-up. They found that spring is indeed
beginning earlier along birds’ migration routes. “By contrary, previous studies have mainly
focused on songbirds in Eastern North America,” says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at
UCLA, “but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of
the food web might be just as vulnerable (脆弱的).”
“Part of it is knowing which species are vulnerable to various threats,” Loss says. “This
adds to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hopes that
the information will serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast
as possible. “It’s really important, if we can’t address climate change immediately, to try to stop
habitat loss as much as we can.”
28. What may pose a direct threat to western tanagers’ survival?
A. The worsening of global warming.
B. The duration of changing seasons.
C. Loss of habitats due to human activities.
D. Decreased access to foods during migration.
高二英语 第 6 页 共 11 页
29. What can we learn about the new study on birds like western tanagers?
A. It covers a wider geographic range.
B. It reveals the decline in bird populations.
C. It centers on the adaptation of bird species.
D. It ensures the existence of a timing mismatch.
30. What does Loss suggest we do to safeguard migratory birds?
A. Lessen the effects of climate change.
B. Preserve ecosystems for bird species.
C. Tackle emissions and habitat loss.
D. Expand researches on threats to birds.
31. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A scientific journal. B. A bird-watching guidebook.
C. A website about climate change. D. Amagazine about botanical conservation.
D
Maybe you’ve dreamed of rising quickly like a bird since childhood, or you’ve recently
started revisiting a particular place or time while asleep. If so, you are not alone. It seems like
the same dreams keep following us.
Recurring (反复发生 ) dreams are a common phenomenon. Sometimes they’re nearly
identical each time they occur, but they may also have recurring themes, locations or characters
set against different backgrounds. This change sets them apart from nightmares (梦魇) caused by
PTSD, a psychological condition in which people relive specific memories from their waking
life with far less variation while asleep.
Recent studies have justified the long-held idea that recurring dreams are often—but not
always — bad ones. The reasons why we might have a greater tendency for negative dreams
are not fully understood, but Michael Schredl, a researcher from Germany, says dreams typically
overstate something in our waking life — even a small feeling or minor situation we feel
powerless to change. “In the dream, it becomes a much bigger emotion, although the connection
isn’t always straightforward,” he explains.
Psychology and neuroscience offer additional clues. For example, we are subject to what’s
known as negativity prejudice: a tendency to focus more upon unpleasant thoughts, emotions or
social interactions than on positive ones. This behavior is rooted in our subconscious (潜意识)
need to resolve negative situations that threaten our survival. Negativity bias may be worsened
in sleep because our dreaming brain holds back the areas associated with logic and activates
parts associated with emotion.
Nirit Soffer-Dudek, a consciousness researcher at Ben-Gurion University in Israel,
recommends developing good “sleep hygiene (卫生 ).” By setting a consistent sleep schedule,
高二英语 第 7 页 共 11 页
limiting screen use and avoiding caffeine or alcohol before bed, “you’re less likely to fall asleep
while still in a heightened emotional state,” she says. “The best advice I can give is to try to
guarantee strong boundaries between your waking time and sleep to avoid bringing anxiety into
your dreams.”
32. How do recurring dreams differ from PTSD-related nightmares?
A. Recurring dreams have more variation.
B. Recurring dreams are less vivid.
C. PTSD-related nightmares have more themes.
D. PTSD-related nightmares are less frequent.
33. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The significance of subconscious behavior.
B. The limitation of emotional activation.
C. The possible reason for negative dreams.
D. The solution to worsened sleep.
34. What does Nirit suggest people do?
A. Stop the use of electronic devices. B. Extend waking-and-sleeping boundaries.
C. Keep a regular sleep routine. D. Consume some alcohol before bed.
35. What is a suitable title for this text?
A. Battle against poor sleep B.Take a look at recurring dreams
C. Cope with negativity prejudice D. Keep an eye on mental health

A majority of the people do not read the classics. Their reasons begin with the language
being too difficult and end with the storyline too distant to the present context. Love for classics
is obviously not at first sight. 36 We begin as acquaintances (泛泛之交) and eventually
become close friends with private jokes between us. So how does one approach a classic?
Don’t be afraid to be confused.
We get it: it’s hard to power through confusion. It doesn’t feel great when a book makes
you feel confused. Every reader has to start somewhere. 37 Instead, be proud of yourself
for trying, and get excited about all the new things you’ll learn.
Research, research, research.
38 Researching the author—and the time and place they were writing about — can
help you situate yourself during tricky passages. The author’s experience, viewpoint, and
historical context might help you make the connections you might not have otherwise.
Just pick the book up.
高二英语 第 8 页 共 11 页
This step is self-explanatory. While it’s not hard to just pick a book up, we know how
difficult it can be to convince yourself to do so. 39 Take a deep breath, then leap onto the
deck (甲板) of Melville’s Pequod or step cautiously through the gates of Castle Dracula.
Remember: there is no perfect answer.
There is no right way to read a classic text. There is no defining interpretation, no singular,
exact answer. Your goal as a reader is to discover what aspects and insights are meaningful to
you. Enjoy the process. 40 Even if your interpretation of the work isn’t quite perfect, it is
still valuable.
A. It is a gradual affair.
B. Allow the book to grow with you.
C. It has some form of historical influence.
D. Before you turn to page one, do some digging.
E. Never beat yourself up for not knowing something.
F. Remind yourself that it’s a new learning opportunity.
G. Consider what confuses you, read with intention, and think critically.

It was a sunny Saturday morning, and Jake had just put on his sneakers when his phone
buzzed. It was a message from Ryan: “Meet at the park in 15 minutes?” Jake smiled. It had been
a long week of school, and he couldn’t wait to play basketball with his friends. Just as he was
heading out, his mom called from the kitchen.
“Jake! Come back! I need your help with the storage room.”
“But Mom, I told Ryan I’d meet him at the park,” Jake protested.
高二英语 第 11 页 共 11 页
“We talked about this. Grandma is moving in this weekend, so we need to clean out the
storage room to make space for her.”
“Grandma?” Jake thought, the word feeling almost foreign on his tongue. He didn’t even
know her that well — it had been years since she last visited, and now she was moving in? He
couldn’t believe he had to give up his Saturday for someone he barely knew. With complaints
and sighs, he kicked at the floor as he trudged (步履艰难地走) down the hallway, dragging his
feet like they weighed a ton.
Stepping into the storage room, his nose wrinkled in disgust. The place was a disaster.
Spiderwebs drooped from every corner, and dust swirled in the sunlight like dirty smoke. Boxes
teetered (摇摇欲坠) in unstable stacks, a rolled-up carpet with worn edges lay half-spilled across
the floor, and forgotten junk crowded every inch. Jake let out a long, dramatic sigh — this job
was going to take forever.
Just as he was about to give up and sneak a text to Ryan, a faded blue album tucked at the
bottom of the suitcase caught his eye. Faint words were etched on its leather cover: Stories with
Jake (To Be Continued…). He pulled it out and flipped it open — the pages were filled with
moments of him and his grandmother. On the very first page was a photo — On the very first
page was a photo: his grandmother, much younger then, cradling a tiny baby wrapped in a soft
blanket. At the bottom of the photo he saw some words in careful handwriting: “Glad to meet
you, baby Jake.”

第二节:
As he flipped through more photos, his eyes began to mist. There were pictures of Grandma teaching him to bake cookies, her flour - covered hands guiding his small ones. Another showed them laughing as they tried to fly a kite in the backyard, the wind tangling their hair. Jake realized Grandma had been part of his happy memories all along. Guilt washed over him. He quickly texted Ryan, explaining he'd be late, then rolled up his sleeves. With new - found energy, he swept the spiderwebs, sorted the boxes, and tidied the room, humming as he worked, eager to make it nice for Grandma.
Next morning, when his grandmother stepped into her new room, Jake handed her the album. Grandma's eyes widened, and tears welled up. “Oh, Jake, these are precious,” she said, hugging him tightly. “I was worried you'd forgotten our times together.” Jake smiled, “I did forget for a bit, but now I remember. I'm glad you're here, Grandma.” And as they looked through the album together, sharing stories, Jake knew this Saturday had given him a gift more valuable than basketball—reconnecting with the love of his grandmother.
