From there, they make a list of favorites, cutting it down from 60 to 40 and then finally to 20, during a heated debate in Seattle. It’s a long process where emotions run high. Below are 4 of the top 20 picks of 2023, along with quotes (引述) from the editors. Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano “Ann Napolitano creates a touching story that centers on the Padavano sisters, who are close to each other — until they aren’t. Hello Beautiful offers big emotions, and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful and so page-turning, which is why we named it the Best Book of 2023 So Far.” — Al Woodworth Weyward by Emilia Hart “Though divided by centuries, three women, who share a unique connection to the natural world and to one another, tell their attractive stories of ill treatment, danger, and adaptability in a beautifully written novel that is an impressive read.” — Seira Wilson Poverty, by America by Matthew Desmond “In 200 powerful and critical pages, Matthew Desmond lays out a clear explanation of inequality that will make you rage (发怒), give in, and feel shame. This book may not be the easiest read, but it’s one of the most important ones.” — Lindsay Powers King: A Life by Jonathan Eig “Eig’s best description of Martin Luther King Jr. is an amazing achievement of writing and research, telling the hardships and heroics of a man who changed the world. B The Old Man and the Sea, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a timeless novella about an aging Cuban fisherman named Santiago. For eighty-four consecutive days, Santiago struggles without catching a single fish, becoming a symbol of bad luck in his small coastal village. His young apprentice, Manolin, admires Santiago deeply but is forced by his parents to leave the old man’s boat and join a more successful fisherman. Despite his loneliness and the villagers’ pity, Santiago remains determined. On the eighty-fifth day, he ventures far into the Gulf Stream, where he hooks a massive marlin — a fish larger than his own boat. The marlin drags Santiago’s boat for two days and nights. The old man, weakened by hunger and exhaustion, battles the fish with every ounce of strength, refusing to surrender. “Pain does not matter to a man,” he whispers, embodying his code of resilience. When he finally kills the marlin, he ties it to the side of his boat, only to face a new threat: sharks attracted by the marlin’s blood. Santiago fights fiercely with makeshift weapons — harpoons, oars, and even a knife — but the sharks strip the marlin to its skeleton. Returning to shore, Santiago collapses in his hut. Though he brings back nothing but bones, the village marvels at the skeleton’s size, and Manolin weeps at the old man’s injuries. Hemingway’s story is a celebration of human endurance: Santiago proves that defeat in action can coexist with victory in spirit. 4.What is the main conflict in the story? A.Santiago’s battle with the marlin and sharks. B.Santiago’s struggle against poverty. C.Manolin’s conflict with his parents. D.The villagers’ distrust of Santiago. 5.Why does Manolin leave Santiago? A.He wants to learn from a richer fisherman. B.His parents force him to leave. C.He loses faith in Santiago’s luck. D.Santiago asks him to go. 6.What does the marlin symbolize in the story? A.Unpredictable nature. B.The failure of effort. C.A test of Santiago’s determination. D.The village’s scorn. 7.What theme does Hemingway emphasize in The Old Man and the Sea? A.The importance of wealth. B.The loneliness of old age. C.The danger of the ocean. D.The power of perseverance. C Do you like the thick brush strokes and soft color palettes of an impressionist painting such as those by Claude Monet? Or do you prefer the bold colors and abstract shapes of a Rothko? Individual art tastes have a certain mystique to them, but now a new Caltech study shows that a simple computer program can accurately predict which paintings a person will like. The new study asked more than 1,500 volunteers to rate paintings in the genres of impressionism, cubism, abstract, and color field. The volunteers’ answers were fed into a computer program, which then could predict the volunteers’ art preferences. The findings not only demonstrated that computers could make these predictions but also led to a new understanding about how people judge art. “The main point is that we are gaining an insight into the mechanism that people use to make aesthetic judgments,” says O’Doherty, a neuroscientist in the team. In the study, the team programmed the computer to break a painting's visual attributes down into what they called low-level features—traits like contrast, saturation (饱和度), and color—as well as high-level features, which require human judgment and include traits such as whether the painting is dynamic or still. The computer program then estimates how much a specific feature is taken into account when making a decision about how much to like a particular piece of art. Both features are combined when making these decisions. Once the computer has estimated that, then it can successfully predict a person’s liking for another previously unseen piece of art. The researchers also discovered that the volunteers tended to cluster into three general categories: those who like paintings with real-life objects, such as an impressionist painting; those who like colorful abstract paintings; and those who like complex paintings, such as Picasso’s cubist portraits. The majority of people fell into the first “real-life object” category. While the computer program was successful at predicting the volunteers’ art preferences, the researchers say there is still more to learn about the nuances that go into any one individual’s taste. “There are aspects of individual preferences that we have not succeeded in explaining using this method,” says O’Doherty. “This more idiosyncratic component may relate to past experiences and other personal traits that might influence valuation.” 8.What was the main purpose of the Caltech study mentioned in the passage? A.To examine why people have different tastes in paintings. B.To compare different painting styles like impressionism and cubism. C.To prove that computers can create better art than humans. D.To determine the accuracy of computers’ prediction of art preferences. 9.Which of the following statements is TRUE about “high-level features” in the study? A.They were ignored by the computer program in the study. B.They involve subjective judgment. C.They are less accurate than low-level features in predicting preferences. D.They are easily quantifiable by machines. 10.The word “idiosyncratic” in the last paragraph most closely means A.vital B.predictable C.individual D.complex 11.Based on the passage, what is the likely next step for this research? A.Teaching computers to paint original artwork. B.Incorporating additional personal data into the prediction model. C.Eliminating the use of low-level features in predictions. D.Focusing mainly on impressionist paintings. D In high school, you have to take a lot of required courses, but you typically have some degree of choice. Your choices are often put into two broad categories. You have science, technology, engineering, and mathematics coursework in one, and arts and social studies in another. However, are art and science really that different? There are certainly key differences between doing science and making art. The goal of science is to create new understanding of how the world works and develop practical solutions that address challenges, such as climate change. Artists attempt to call up a sense of beauty or an emotional reaction through their work — whether it’s in dance, music, painting, or other art form. Science is designed to be objective and guided by data; art is subjective and deeply influenced by feelings and opinions. While the outcomes of science and art are quite different, the processes involved have certain similarities. There are plenty of real-life examples showing that people can be interested in both art and science — you don’t have to choose one over the other. Perhaps the best known Western historical figure who was both artist and scientist is Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci is famous for his paintings, particularly the Mona Lisa. But he was also known in many science and engineering fields; he dreamed up inventions far ahead of his time, including the parachute and calculator (计算器). Sometimes scientific discovery can best be understood by drawing artful comparisons. For example, Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity is sometimes poetically explained in a way that stimulates feelings: When sitting with someone you like, an hour is like a minute, but if you touch a hot stove (炉子), a minute is like an hour. All of this leads back to you and your choices and views of the arts and sciences. The process of inventing ourselves involves complex decisions, just as creating a new theory or composing a musical masterpiece does. How you’ll apply originality to decision-making will be up to you 12.What does para 2 mainly tell us about science and art? A.Their major differences. B.Their different goals. C.Their general functions. D.Their close relations. 13.What does the author mean by mentioning Da Vinci? A.Science and art have much in common. B.Everyone can develop in all sides. C.One can be good at both art and science. D.It’s crucial to make correct choices. 14.What does the explanation of Einstein’s theory suggest? A.Einstein’s theory of relativity is actually easy to learn. B.All scientific discoveries can be explained by comparison. C.Science can be more understandable by comparing artfully. D.Drawing artful comparisons is the best way to explain science. 15.What’s the author’s opinion about science and art? A.Science is more useful than art. B.They are different but related. C.Science can’t be understood without art. D.They have more similarities than differences. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) In recent years, digital learning tools have reshaped classrooms. While interactive platforms and AI tutors promise personalized education, unregulated adoption may undermine (逐步削落) core values. A University of Cambridge study tracked 2,000 students across 15 countries. “Notifications and multimedia distractions create fragmented learning,” explains Dr. Elena Vasquez. 16 . Another concern is critical thinking erosion. “Outsourcing thinking weakens analytical skills,” warns Dr. Vasquez. 17 . Educators now advocate a hybrid approach. Finland’s pilot program replaced half of textbook lessons. Results showed a 22% improvement in problem-solving skills. 18 . UNESCO’s framework emphasizes intentional design: relevance, teacher autonomy, and student agency. For example, a history class might use VR to explore historical sites but require reflective essays afterward. 19 . “Technology should amplify, not replace, human interaction,” concludes Dr. Vasquez. As schools navigate digitalization, one truth remains: effective education requires balance. 20 . By prioritizing pedagogy (教学法) over tools, educators can empower learners without compromising foundational skills. A.Such activities deepen understanding, not replace critical thinking. B.This model shows tech can enhance, not disrupt, traditional methods. C.Schools must limit screen time and integrate mindfulness training. D.However, overreliance may hinder cognitive development. E.Curriculum reforms should emphasize metacognitive strategies. F.Digital tools improve engagement but reduce lecture focus. G.Teachers need training to curate relevant digital resources. 第二部分 语言运用(共二节, 满分30分) 第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分, 共15分) Frankenstein On a stormy night in 1815, a young, 18-year-old girl had a 21 nightmare. It involves the art of writing Chinese characters with a brush, where every stroke (笔画) 36 (carry) profound cultural meanings. In a recent cultural event in Shanghai, ancient Chinese calligraphy met modern digital art. At the event, digital screens 37 (use) to display high-definition images of classic calligraphy masterpieces. Moreover, advanced interactive technology allowed visitors to 38 (virtual) “pick up” a digital brush and imitate the writing process of these masters on the screen. Sensors were installed (安装) to capture the pressure, speed, and trajectory (运动轨迹) of the “brush strokes,” providing real-. time feedback on the 39 (accurate) of the imitation. Li Ming, a young visitor, enjoyed the experience. “It’s hard to find a calligraphy teacher, 40 this digital tool lets me learn at my own pace with instant guidance. It’s 41 having a private tutor.” He said. This combination of tradition and technology not only attracts youth to the art but also offers new ways of preservation. By digitizing calligraphy works, they can be better protected from time and environmental damage, while online platforms globalise access, breaking 42 (geography) barriers. Moreover, artists now use AI 43 (craft) calligraphy-inspired works. Algorithms (算法) analyze classic structures and styles to generate new character combinations, 44 are then translated into digital or physical artworks. This enriches calligraphy’s creative forms, 45 (bring) fresh vitality (活力) into the ancient art in the digital era. Dear Peter, I’m writing to share with you the unforgettable experience at our school’s Science and Technology Festival last Friday. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Best wishes! The machine delivered an apology video from Karl Anderson, a former colleague who sabotaged Winston’s job application at Future Industries nine years prior. Karl confessed to spreading rumors that Winston was “impossible to work with,” driven by fear of competition. Initially furious—“THAT SCOUNDREL!”—Winston recalled his dashed career hopes. Yet his wife Elizabeth reminded him: missing that job led him to IndustriCorp, where they met, married, and had their daughter Rachel. “Things worked out just fine,” she said. Winston accepted Karl’s apology, realizing life’s unexpected blessings. The robot then demanded Winston record his own apology, calibrated to match Karl’s in “value.” His trivial confessions—scratching a hover-bike, childhood theft—were rejected as “insufficient.” Finally, Winston recalled breaking Cherisse’s heart at 22. The robot approved: “Value is sufficient.” As Winston apologized for fleeing love out of fear, he felt “lighter,” mirroring Karl’s catharsis. The robot departed to deliver both messages. Watching it vanish into the night, Winston—inspired—declared: “I’m going to build a robot.” This encounter bridged past regrets and present gratitude. Winston’s journey from resentment to forgiveness, and his resolve to create his own reconciling machine, underscored the transformative power of accountability and serendipity. With tools scattered across the workbench, Winston stared at the blueprints of his homemade robot, determined to create a machine that could heal broken relationships. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ However, when he activated the robot for the first time, its screen flickered unexpectedly, displaying a familiar face from his past. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ Unit 4 Meeting the Muse 单元提升卷--2025-2026学年高中英语外研版(2019)选择性必修第一册 解析卷 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:120分) 第一部分阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项 A Every year — for more than 15 years running — Amazon editors come together and read hundreds of books. The volunteers’ answers were fed into a computer program, which then could predict the volunteers’ art preferences.(这项新研究让1500多名志愿者对印象派、立体派、抽象派和色域派等不同流派的画作进行评分。志愿者的答案被输入到一个计算机程序中,该程序可以预测志愿者的艺术偏好) ”以及第三段中“The findings not only demonstrated that computers could make these predictions but also led to a new understanding about how people judge art.(研究结果不仅证明了计算机可以进行这些预测,还让我们对人们如何评判艺术有了新的认识)”可知,Caltech研究的主要目的是确定计算机预测艺术偏好的准确性。故选D。 9. 根据第四段“In the study, the team programmed the computer to break a painting's visual attributes down into what they called low-level features — traits like contrast, saturation (饱和度), and color — as well as high-level features, which require human judgment and include traits such as whether the painting is dynamic or still.(在研究中,研究团队让计算机将画作的视觉属性分解为他们所说的低级特征——如对比度、饱和度和颜色等特性——以及需要人类判断的高级特征,包括画作是动态的还是静态的等特性)”可推知,研究中的“高级特征”涉及主观判断。故选B。 10. 根据最后一段中“There are aspects of individual preferences that we have not succeeded in explaining using this method,” says O’Doherty. “This more idiosyncratic component may relate to past experiences and other personal traits that might influence valuation.(O’Doherty说:“我们无法用这种方法解释个人偏好的某些方面。 根据最后一段中“While the computer program was successful at predicting the volunteers’ art preferences, the researchers say there is still more to learn about the nuances that go into any one individual’s taste. “There are aspects of individual preferences that we have not succeeded in explaining using this method,” says O’Doherty. “This more idiosyncratic component may relate to past experiences and other personal traits that might influence valuation.”(虽然计算机程序在预测志愿者的艺术偏好方面取得了成功,但研究人员表示,对于每个人品味的细微差别,我们还有很多需要了解的地方。 B。 D In high school, you have to take a lot of required courses, but you typically have some degree of choice. 故选A项。 13. 根据第三段“There are plenty of real-life examples showing that people can be interested in both art and science — you don’t have to choose one over the other. Perhaps the best known Western historical figure who was both artist and scientist is Leonardo da Vinci. 根据第二段“There are certainly key differences between doing science and making art.(科学研究与艺术创作之间确实存在关键差异)”和第三段首句“While the outcomes of science and art are quite different, the processes involved have certain similarities.(尽管科学和艺术的结果差异很大,但涉及的过程有一定相似性)”可知,作者认为科学与艺术“不同但相关”。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) In recent years, digital learning tools have reshaped classrooms. While interactive platforms and AI tutors promise personalized education, unregulated adoption may undermine (逐步削落) core values. A University of Cambridge study tracked 2,000 students across 15 countries. “Notifications and multimedia distractions create fragmented learning,” explains Dr. Elena Vasquez. 16 . Another concern is critical thinking erosion. “Outsourcing thinking weakens analytical skills,” warns Dr. Vasquez. 17 . Educators now advocate a hybrid approach. Finland’s pilot program replaced half of textbook lessons. Results showed a 22% improvement in problem-solving skills. 18 . UNESCO’s framework emphasizes intentional design: relevance, teacher autonomy, and student agency. For example, a history class might use VR to explore historical sites but require reflective essays afterward. 19 . “Technology should amplify, not replace, human interaction,” concludes Dr. Vasquez. As schools navigate digitalization, one truth remains: effective education requires balance. 20 . By prioritizing pedagogy (教学法) over tools, educators can empower learners without compromising foundational skills. A.Such activities deepen understanding, not replace critical thinking. B.This model shows tech can enhance, not disrupt, traditional methods. C.Schools must limit screen time and integrate mindfulness training. D.However, overreliance may hinder cognitive development. E.Curriculum reforms should emphasize metacognitive strategies. F.Digital tools improve engagement but reduce lecture focus. G.Teachers need training to curate relevant digital resources. 18.上文“Finland’s pilot program replaced half of textbook lessons. The nightmare was terrible, but it gave her an idea for a tale — a tale that would become the most recognized 22 story in the world: the story of Frankenstein's monster. The author's name was Mary Shelley (1797 — 1851). Her novel describes the trials of an 23 young scientist, Dr Frankenstein, who uses his knowledge to bring an inanimate body to life, but then 24 the shocking “monster” he creates. At the time of writing, the story was a powerful warning 25 scientific advances and is the Industrial Revolution, which was about 26 across Europe. Many artists and writers were concerned 27 this industrialization and the effect it would have 28 man's relationship with nature. They saw danger in the new scientific advances. Volume 1, Chapter 4 It was on a dreary night in November that I completed my work. With an anxiety that almost 29 to pain, I collected the instruments of life around me that I might add a small amount of being to the lifeless thing that 30 at my feet. It was already one in the morning; the rain fell dismally against the windows, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the failing light, I saw the yellow eye of the 31 open; it breathed hard, and a sudden movement disturbed its arms and legs. How can I describe my emotions at this disaster, or how to describe the terrible creature I had tried to form? His arms and legs were in proportion, and I had selected his 32 as beautiful. Beautiful! His yellow skin 33 covered the muscles beneath; his hair was black and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness that formed a horrible contrast with his watery eyes, his 34 face and straight black mouth. I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the only purpose of breathing life into an inanimate body. For this I had 35 myself of rest and health, but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream disappeared, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart. 21.A.moral B.vivid C.massive D.pure 22.A.horror B.motivation C.peak D.charm 23.A.elegant B.ambitious C.innocent D.patient 24.A.rejects B.boosts C.hacks D.rebels 25.A.at B.with C.against D.of 26.A.spread B.spreading C.to spread D.to spreading 27.A.at B.to C.about D.with 28.A.at B.to C.about D.on 29.A.amounted B.attained C.combined D.engaged 30.A.lies B.lied C.laid D.lay 31.A.creature B.cage C.civilian D.comedy 32.A.features B.settings C.symbols D.professions 33.A.universally B.barely C.unrealistically D.artificially 34.A.shifted B.rooted C.eased D.wrinkled 35.A.deprived B.behaved C.decreased D.tackled 【答案】 21.B 22.A 23.B 24.A 25.C 26.B 27.C 28.D 29.A 30.D 31.A 32.A 33.B 34.D 35.A 【导语】这篇文章是《弗兰肯斯坦》创作背景及小说节选。 B项“vivid”意为“生动的,逼真的”,能体现出噩梦的清晰和真实感,这也与后文“it gave her an idea for a tale”对女孩产生的影响相呼应。故选B项。 22. A. horror 恐怖;B. motivation 动机;C. peak 顶峰;D. charm 魅力。 故选A项。 23. 空格修饰“young scientist”, 结合后文“uses his knowledge to bring an inanimate body to life”可知他用知识赋予无生命体生命,是其有雄心的体现。故选B项。 24. 故选A项。 25. A. at 在……;B. with 带有 ;C. against 反对;D. of ……的。根据本段最后一句“They saw danger in the new scientific advances.” A. spread 传播(过去式/过去分词);B. spreading 传播(现在分词/动名词);C. to spread 传播(不定式);D. to spreading 传播(介词+动名词)。根据文章第一段给的时间点1815年,以及上文“the story was a powerful warning 5 scientific advances and is the Industrial Revolution”结合常识可知,1815年工业革命处于向欧洲扩散的进程中,非“即将开始”。 A. at 在;B. to 向,对于;C. about 关于;D. with 和…… A. at 在;B. to 向,对于;C. about 关于;D. on 在…… A. amounted 总计达;B. attained 达到,获得;C. combined 结合;D. engaged 从事。 故选A项。 30. A. creature 生物;B. cage 笼子;C. civilian 平民;D. comedy 喜剧。 前文称它为“the lifeless thing”,后文称它为“the terrible creature”,A项符合语意。故选A项。 32. A. features 面貌;B. settings 环境,设置;C. symbols 特征;D. professions 职业。 故选A项。 33. A. deprived 剥夺;B. behaved 表现;C. decreased 减少;D. tackled 处理,应付。 空格动词需与“myself of rest and health”搭配。结合上文“I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the only purpose of breathing life into an inanimate body”这里说作者为了给无生命的物体注入生命,几乎两年努力工作,推测为此剥夺了自己的休息时间和健康。 故选A项。 Calligraphy, one of the most valued traditional Chinese arts, has a history spanning thousands of years. 36.carries 37.were used 38.virtually 39.accuracy 40.but 41.like 42.geographical 43.to craft 44.which 45.bringing 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据前文“It involves the art of writing Chinese characters with a brush”可知,句子描述一般性事实,应用一般现在时,且主语every stroke是单数,谓语动词应用第三人称单数形式。故填carries。 37. 根据前文“In a recent cultural event in Shanghai”可知,句子描述过去发生的事情,应用一般过去时,且主语digital screens和动词use之间是被动关系,应用一般过去时的被动语态,主语是复数,be动词用were。故填were used。 38. 故填but。 41. 故填like。 42. use sth. to do sth. 故填to craft。 44. 故填which。 45. Dear Peter, I’m writing to share with you the unforgettable experience at our school’s Science and Technology Festival last Friday. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Best wishes! Winston Sinclair’s quiet evening was interrupted by a squat grey robot at his door. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】With tools scattered across the workbench, Winston stared at the blueprints of his homemade robot, determined to create a machine that could heal broken relationships. Winston’s robot, designed with emotional recognition algorithms guiding users to vulnerability over hollow apologies, emerged from nights soldering circuits. Testing staged a sandbox quarrel, the bot asking, “What hurt your heart?” sparked tearful reconciliation. Yet doubting machinery’s capacity for human messiness, he added a “silent listening” mode, inspired by Karl’s video resolving rage. However, when he activated the robot for the first time, its screen flickered unexpectedly, displaying a familiar face from his past. Cherisse’s aged yet unmistakable features materialized, eyes filled with tears. The machine had tracked her down, cross-referencing Winston’s apology with her digital footprints. “Message pending delivery,” it intoned. Winston’s hands trembled. Before he could abort, Cherisse’s live response played: “I waited years to hear that.” Her voice softened. “But seeing you build this… maybe some fractures make room for better things.” The camera captured Winston’s stunned reflection beside Rachel’s crayon drawings, weaving past and present into a single frame of healing. 词汇激活 行为类 ①激励:inspired → motivated / influenced by ②颤抖:trembled → shook / quivered ③变得温柔:softened → lowered / gentled ④记录:captured → recorded / documented 情绪类 ①决心:determined → resolved ②愤怒:rage →anger ③质疑:doubting → questioning / skeptical of / uncertain about ④震惊:stunned →astonished 【点睛】【高分句型1】 Yet doubting machinery’s capacity for human messiness, he added a “silent listening” mode, inspired by Karl’s video resolving rage.
