Paragraph 1: A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school, Ronny was bathing
with some of his new friends in the river happily. Suddenly, he was stuck in the mud and couldn蒺t get out. He struggled hard
but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water
as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
Paragraph 2: At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible.
Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesita鄄
tion. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought
Ronny to the shore in time. Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.

Paragraph 1: She reached into the pocket of her dress.
“
Then I will give you a cadeau.
”
She announced. Kindly, she
placed an old dark brown coin in my hand. In the surprise, I looked at the coin, and then at the woman. At that moment, I
felt rather ashamed, ashamed of my terrible attitude towards the old woman. In spite of her poverty, she was able to give me
something priceless. I had taken it for granted that beggars would only receive something from others, yet the coin from the
beggar woman in Burkina truly changed my view towards them, and her smile hit the deepest of my heart.
Paragraph 2: There was a slight touch on my hand: looking down, I saw my son looking at me, curious.
“
Mum, can I have
this? Can I play with this coin?
”
he repeated.
“
You can蒺t play with it, honey,
”
I touched my son on the head and said
slowly.
“
This one is special. It is an unforgettable precious memory to me. Come and let me tell you a story.

What we think about ourselves shows up in the things we say and do. We may even
misinterpret the words and actions of others because of the view we hold of ourselves. It蒺s
important to see ourselves in the most positive light that we can. Seeing the good in ourselves
helps us to do better, to be better.
We all have days when almost everything about our lives looks grey. On those days, it蒺s easy
to feel bad about ourselves. Looking on the bright side of things can help us transform tough
times:
“
Just because I蒺m having a difficult time in one subject doesn蒺t mean that I蒺m not a good
student.
”
or
“
Even though the girl I want to date won蒺t go out with me, that doesn蒺t mean I蒺m
not a likable or lovable person.
”
The good news is that psychologists tell us that we are hurt less by the misfortunes of life
than we are by how we see them. And this is never truer than when applied to how we see
ourselves. Not only do we have the choice to paint the events and situations in our lives in the
color that we choose, we also have the choice to paint ourselves in the color we choose. In other
words, you get to choose whether the cup is half鄄full or half鄄empty when it comes to how you see
yourself!
Many teens we heard from also know how important it is to cast a positive vote when it
comes to their own self鄄worth, saying that self鄄esteem and actions went hand in hand. From
becoming a better athlete to getting better grades, from being a friend to attracting better friends,
from getting along with your parents to being granted more privileges, self鄄esteem plays a big
role.
