When I got my first research project to work, I was so excited. Seeing research in action was enjoyable. My excitement, though, was soon cut short when my professor asked me to write a research paper on the project. My body tensed. Writing was the last thing I wanted to do; it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place.
I had hated writing since I was a little boy. But I couldn’t avoid it: writing classes were required in high school. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganised thoughts into fluent sentences. My teachers would return my papers littered with red, showing my paragraphs were out of order. I was frustrated to no end. How could I know what was good if there was no objectively right answer? Maybe I wasn’t cut out for writing.
I studied engineering in college. A few years later, I joined a research lab. The professor assigned me an initial project to improve the efficiency of an inductor I spent weeks setting up a test for a new design. When I got the results, though, the numbers weren’t good. I kept trying new designs, using the results to brainstorm ideas with a team of researchers. Finally, after dozens of designs, we had one that could work. I was overjoyed — until my professor told me to write that research paper.
In panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper full of red marks. Before I could quit in defeat, though, the graduate student explained red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times. Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was designing my research project?” I kept improving my outline, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback from others. Finally, I made it, and surprisingly, I was having fun.
From then on, writing became one of my favourite parts of research, and it still is today. It’s a future I never could have imagined during my early struggles with writing classes. But I came around.
4. How did the author feel when asked to write a research paper?
A. Regretful. B. Ashamed. C. Disappointed. D. Unwilling.
5. The author’s teacher returned his papers littered with red because ________.
A. he handed in blank pages
B. his sentences were smooth
C his writing lacked organisation
D. he combined science in his writing
6. Which word would best describe the author’s final research design?
A. Hard-earned. B. Confusing. C. Well-known. D. Worrying.
7. What can we learn from this passage?
A. A good beginning is half done.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. A bad workman always blames his tools.
D. Trial and error opens the door to progress.
D 5. C 6. A 7. D

根据文章第一段“My excitement, though, was soon cut short when my professor asked me to write a research paper on the project. My body tensed. Writing was the last thing I wanted to do; it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place.(然而,我的兴奋劲儿很快就烟消云散了,因为我的教授要求我就这个项目写一篇研究论文。我顿时紧张起来。写作是我最不想做的事,这也是我当初选择投身科学领域的原因之一)”可知,得知教授要求他针对该项目写一篇研究论文时,作者身体变得紧绷,并且表明写作是他最不想做的事。由此推知,作者对于写研究论文这件事是很不情愿的态度。故选D。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganised thoughts into fluent sentences. My teachers would return my papers littered with red, showing my paragraphs were out of order.(好几个小时,我都盯着空白的纸张,试图把自己杂乱无章的想法转化成流畅的语句。老师们会把批改后满是红色标记的作文发还给我,指出我的段落条理不清)”可知,作者提到自己在高中时,花好几个小时盯着空白的纸张,努力将混乱的思绪转化为流畅的句子,并且老师会把满是红色标记的作文还给他,这些红色标记表明他的段落混乱无序。由此可知,老师在他的作文上做满红色标记是因为他的写作缺乏条理,也就是写作结构混乱。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“A few years later, I joined a research lab. The professor assigned me an initial project to improve the efficiency of an inductor (电路感应器). I spent weeks setting up a test for a new design. When I got the results, though, the numbers weren’t good. Finally, I made it, and surprisingly, I was having fun.(我不断完善我的大纲,最终在他人反馈意见的指导下,把大纲变成了一个个句子和段落。
C
Around 40 million tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste, is produced every year. This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. Even for standard waste this is a big headache, because any materials that are buried in the ground can’t be easily recovered and recycled. Recycling electronics can save energy and means that less of Earth’s natural resources need to be mined.
Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modern devices. While heavy metals and chemicals improve a device’s safety and user experience, they become poisonous if they’re not dealt with properly. Your old phones, Gameboys, kettles, microwaves and more can end up in landfills, leaking their harmful contents into the soil, water and air. Not only does this kill wildlife and destroy ecosystems, but the accumulation (累积) of poison can impact human health too. As heavy metals and chemicals flow into lakes and rivers, drinking water becomes polluted. These poisons spread through the soil, impacting the health of crops and animals that people also rely on.
In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production. Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.
8. What does the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Repaired. B. Protected. C. Used. D. Abandoned.
9. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A. E-waste has a permanent effect on the environment.
B. E-waste may do harm to both ecosystems and humans.
C. Heavy metals and chemicals are poisonous to the users.
D. Burying e-waste into landfills is an effective way to recycle.
10. How does the author describe the handling of e-waste in Western countries?
A. By providing data. B. By asking questions.
C. By listing examples. D. By offering a definition.
11. What might the author continue to talk about?
A. Solutions to destroying e-waste. B. Ways to recycle e-waste properly.
C. Applications of recycled materials. D. Investments in restoring ecosystems.
D 9. B 10. C 11. B

In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year.
根据第二段“Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modem devices.
根据第三段“In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.

Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.
D
Fictional, computer-generated human faces are so convincing they can fool even trained observers. They can be easily downloaded online and used for Internet scams(诈骗)and fake social media profiles.
Al programs called generative adversarial networks (生成对抗网络), or GANs, can learn to create fake images that are less and less distinguishable from real images, by competing two neural networks against each other.
Nightingale and her colleague Hany Farid at the University of California, Berkeley, asked 315 participants, recruited on a crowdsourcing website, to say whether they could distinguish a selection of 400 fake photos from 400 photographs of real people. Each set consisted of 100 people from each of four ethnic groups: white, Black, East Asian and South Asian.
This group had an accuracy rate of 48.2 percent—slightly worse than chance. A second group of 219 participants were given training to recognize computer-generated faces. This group had an accuracy rate of 59 percent, but this difference is negligible (可忽略的), says Nightingale.
The researchers also asked a separate group of 223 participants to rate a selection of the same faces on their level of trustworthiness, on a scale of 1 to 7. They rated the fake faces as 8 percent more trustworthy, on average, than the real faces—a small yet significant difference, according to Nightingale. That might be because artificial faces look more like “average” human faces, and people are more likely to trust typical-looking faces, she says.
Looking at the extremes, the four faces rated most untrustworthy were real, whereas the three most trustworthy faces were fake.
“We need stricter ethical guidelines and more legal frameworks in place because, inevitably, there are going to be people out there who want to use these images to do harm, and that’s worrying,” says Nightingale.
To reduce these risks, developers could add watermarks to their images to flag them as fake. she says. “In my opinion, this is bad enough. It’s just going to get worse if we don’t do something to stop it.”
12. What can we know about GANs?
A. GANs can cheat trained observers.
B. GANs should be used under strict legal frameworks.
C. GANs can generate artificial pictures close to real ones.
D. GANs-generated Images can not be distinguished from real ones.
13. Why did Nightingale and Farid carry out the research?
A. To warn people the risk of online fraud.
B. To train people to discover fake photos online.
C. To see if people can distinguish fake faces from real ones.
D. To test whether GANs can create fake faces to fool people.
14. What does Nightingale mean in the last paragraph?
A. Stricter laws and regulations should be imposed.
B. Effective ways are needed but not found yet.
C. Watermarks are an effective way against fake images.
D. Responsibility should be taken by developers to prevent misuse of fake images.
15. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Development of Internet scams. B. Development of AI technology
C. Will fake faces look more trustworthy? D. Legal frameworks for GANs
C 13. C 14. D 15. C

47. I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.
Those were difficult times. People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding. Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump(水泵)did have clean water, we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump wasn’t working, we had to walk five kilometres to the closest stream.
But I was happy. I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived, Dad drove me to Uncle Jita’s house and left. Once he saw me, Uncle Jita announced, “Tomorrow we’re going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera, Amy. You can take photos of what you see.”
The following day, we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off, there was ... nothing in front of us. “I don’t want to take pictures of this,” I complained.
Uncle laughed,“Start walking, Amy. I promise you’ll be surprised.” After some time, I could see the outline of a forest in the distance. A little closer, there was a man waving to us.
“That’s Kabir. The forest you see is his. He planted every single tree.” As we walked towards Kabir, Uncle explained that thirty years ago, the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise(天堂).
Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face. “Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some?” he asked. “Of course!” I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees. I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places. All because of the efforts of one man.
Like Uncle said, Kabir’s forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers. During lunchtime, Kabir explained how, by planting trees, it was possible to stop the land from eroding(侵蚀).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Hearing this, I turned to my uncle, “I think we can plant trees too ”

In the years that followed, people in our village worked hard to carry out our plan.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing this, I turned to my uncle, “I think we can plant trees too.” Grabbing the camera in my hand, I added with excitement. “I’ve got a plan! I’ll show them the photos of Kabir’s magical forest! ” Seeing Uncle and Kabir’s encouraging smile, I immediately set down to my work, busily pressing my shutter and capturing the amazing scenes in the forest. When Uncle and I went back to the village several days later and showed these wonderful pictures to my neighbour, they were stunned by the beauty of the forest. “It was the trees that turned the place into a paradise! ” We then explained our tree-planting plan to the villagers, which was quickly accepted by all of them.
In the years that followed, people in our village worked hard to carry out our plan. Instead of cutting down our forest, we started to plant trees, which has eventually helped protect the soil and stopped the land from eroding. Thanks to the trees, the water has been purified and we finally have clean and stable water supply. With our joint efforts, our village is now surrounded by small thriving forests with blooming flowers, lively animals and crystal-clear streams running through. Witnessing the gradual change of our village, we came to realize that only when we live in harmony with nature can we have a brighter future.

D To test whether GANs can create fake faces to fool people.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Hearing this, I turned to my uncle, “I think we can plant trees too ”
