Like a lot of Canadians,Andrew Suboch grew up knowing little about Canada's
national game-一lacrosse(长曲棍球),other than watching some neighbours pass a ball
using old wooden sticks.
It was only when his two children started playing the game as part of their training
for hockey()that he took much notice. His son,Jack, went on to excel at lacrosse
and he now plays for the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League.
Both children came up through the Mimico Minor Lacrosse organization,in the
Toronto area, which has been around since 1890.When the number of players in the
kids'league began falling in 2014,Mr.Suboch,who is a personal injury lawyer in
Toronto, volunteered to step in.He offered to sponsor the "Baby Peanut"program,
which introduced children aged 3 and 4 to the game.
Thanks to his sponsorship, more than 100 children play for free each spring for
eight weeks. They spend an hour every Saturday learning the game and every player is
given a lightweight stick and a shirt."They are taught to catch, throw, pass and shoot
高二·英语第2页(共10页)
in a non-contact environment,"Mr.Suboch said."You get them running around.Get
them away from the screen. It is our national game,so you get them exposed. And sure
enough,they caught on."
To fund the program,Mr.Suboch came up with a novel idea.He started searching
his neighbourhood for used appliances, metal and electronic items, such as computers
and cellphones. He sorted the material and sold it to a local recycling centre."Word
has gotten out,so people now will give me their used electronics and metal stuff,"he
said. The recycling effort raises around $20,000 annually, which covers the cost of the
lacrosse program.
Mr.Suboch said watching the kids play has given him a lot of satisfaction and joy.
Not only is far less junk going to landfill sites,he said, but "we've also got kids who are
not in front of a screen."
24.Why did Andrew start sponsoring the "Baby Peanut"program?
A.His son asked him to support the game.

In the highly competitive world of artificial intelligence(AI),long dominated by
Silicon Valley,DeepSeek has emerged as an impressive new player.Since its debut(
高二·英语第3页(共10页)
in late 2023,this Chinese AI has attracted global attention, representing more
than just another technological innovation. It's a complex phenomenon that reflects the
shifting landscape of innovation, power and cultural influence in the AI-driven era
Developed by QuantumThink Labs in Shenzhen,DeepSeek was created by a team of
ex-Google Brain engineers and Peking University experts.DeepSeek is not your average
chatbot.Trained on an astonishing 20 trillion tokens, this model showcases linguistic
proficiency(),code generation capabilities and reasoning skills that compare with or
surpass its Western counterparts. What truly sets DeepSeek apart is its remarkable
efficiency, delivering GPT-4-level performance with 30 percent less computational power.
In a strategic move,QuantumThink made a "lite"version of DeepSeek open
source,a decision that has sparked widespread adoption across the globe.Developers
from cities like Lagos to Jakarta have quickly used it to create poetry generators and AI-
powered farm management tools for rural India.
However,DeepSeek's growing influence is not without challenges. There are
concerns that the US government may block American firms from using DeepSeek,
mentioning data security concerns.Tariff()war could also be on the cards.Yet,
such moves might backfire, potentially harming US startups that benefit from DeepSeek's
cost advantages.
The future of Al,with DeepSeek at the center, remains a mystery. Will it lead to a
tech battle between the US and China,or will its open-source roots foster global
collaboration?DeepSeek's story is not just about technology;it's about the power of
innovation.
For too long, the AI narrative has been dominated by Western powers. Now,a
Chinese lab has shown that innovation is not exclusive to the West.Whether we enter an
AI arms race or begin a new era of global cooperation depends on how we choose to use
and share this technology. As a Brazilian coder said, the future of AI must speak the
language of both the developed and developing world to truly succeed.
28.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The creation of DeepSeek.
B.The definition of DeepSeek.
C.The strengths of DeepSeek.
D.The efficiency of DeepSeek.
29.What might be a challenge DeepSeek faces?
A.Fierce competitors.
B.The possibility of data leaking.
C.A decline in its competitiveness.
D.A ban on its use from the US government.

A.Uncertain.
B.Secure.
C.Promising.
D.Depressing.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.AI should prioritize Western languages.
B.We will enter a new era of global Al cooperation.
C.Considering global needs is required to ensure AI's success.

Want to know the current population of India? The internet is your best bet.Need a
quick refresher on the phases of the moon?Go ahead, read a story online (or two or
three). But if you really need to learn something, you're probably better off with print.
Or at least that's what a lot of research now suggests.
Researchers find that people tend to read faster on screens. That's fine for checking
texts and social media posts. But when screens are small, the extra scrolling()
needed to read a long article or book may make it harder to remember what you're
reading,data now show.
That doesn't just depend on the device, however. It also depends on what you
assume about the text.Naomi Baron calls this your mindset. She says one way mindset
works is in anticipating how easy or hard we expect the reading to be.If we think it will
be easy,we might not put in much effort.
Much of what we read on screens tends to be text messages and social media posts,
which are usually easy to understand."So,when people read on screens, they read
faster,"says Alexander at the University of Maryland."Their eyes scan the pages and
the words faster than if they're reading on a piece of paper."But when reading fast,we
may not absorb all the ideas as well.
However, all experts agree on one thing:There's no going back.Digital reading is
here to stay.So it pays to make the most of it.It's a good idea to do a little preparation.
Baron compares reading to sports or to playing music."Watch a pianist or an athlete.
Before they run the race or play the concert, they get themselves in the zone,"she says.
"It's the same thing for reading. Before you read something you really want to focus on,
get in the zone.Think about what you'll be reading, and what you want to get from it.

Ways to Boost Your Chances of a Good Night's Rest
Experts have found more evidence of the harm caused by disturbing our body
clocks, linking it to depression and mental disorder. It's a warning to our body's natural
rhythms, which influence our sleep as well as a range of other processes in our body.
Here are the things we can do for a good night's sleep.
Limit evening light. Are you inseparable from your mobile phone?Do you check
your social media late into the night?36 These devices produce powerful blue light
that is particularly bad for our sleep.Having a cut-off time for stopping using these
devices of an hour and a half before bed is ideal. We should also limit other forms of
electric light after sunset.
.37 A glass or two of wine,or a sip or two of brandy,for many is a pre-bed
routine. But despite what you might think, experts say that a glass of wine before
bedtime actually doesn't improve our sleep.Alcohol has a strange effect in that it makes
it easier to fall asleep, but it makes it harder to stay asleep and it affects the quality of
our sleep.
Be consistent. It may be tempting to stay up late on Friday or Saturday.38 This
高二·英语第6页(共10页)
helps to reduce social mismatch between when we sleep during the working week compared
with the weekend. The bigger the social mismatch, the more harmful it is for health.
Have a pre-bed routine.Having a pre-bed routine helps signal to our bodies that
it's time for sleep.Activities such as reading a book or having a bath can help to
mentally relax and get us ready for bed.Parents do this with their child to get good
sleep. They have a set routine where they feed, bathe their children and put them into
bed.39
Make your bedroom a place of rest.Easily portable computers and phones have
transformed our bedrooms from sanctuaries()of rest into places of entertainment.
40 To do this,we should keep phones and computers in other rooms.Keeping your
bedroom cool is also important because it's easier for our bodies to sleep in colder
temperatures.
A.Avoid a night wine.
B.Get a good night's sleep.
C.If so,you're likely to be disturbing your sleep.
D.There's nothing around them and then they read them a story.
E.Our body clocks are designed to follow the rise and fall of our sleep.
F.However, ideally we should go to bed at similar times throughout the week.
G.But to boost our chances of a good night's rest,we must reclaim them for sleep.

Years ago,I experienced lots of frustration and sadness related to many things
happening in my life:It was a daily struggle to simply think about something positive,
let alone take action to change my circumstances.
One of my challenges was having recently moved to Chicago from a small Canadian
city.I was trying to get used to living in such a large, busy city.

One day,I saw an advertisement asking for volunteers to help at a resource center
for the blind community.I hadn't thought about this kind of volunteering opportunity
before and was a little afraid of it.Still,I signed up to attend a volunteer orientation(
ill)session, hoping I'd feel better by doing something good for the community.
At the orientation,I sat with ten other potential volunteers. As the orientation
organizer asked each of us why we wanted to volunteer to assist blind folks,I began
feeling uncomfortable.Every person who answered mentioned they wanted to volunteer
because they had either a family member or a friend who was blind.I didn't have either.
When it was my turn, all I could think to say was that I loved helping people.
Unexpectedly, the organizer commented I was just the kind of volunteer they were
looking for.Suddenly,my nervousness decreased.
I accepted a two-week volunteering project. On each day of the first week (from
Monday to Friday),I needed to spare time to accompany a blind person to the local
newly opened zoo for fun:They had never visited a zoo.During the second week,I
needed to bring the five people together and help them enjoy books that contained
inspiration and humor.I'd read the book to them.
On Monday of the first week,I would accompany a gray-haired woman,Lina,to
the zoo.Could I make her have a happy journey? What big challenges might there be?
Anxious,I greeted Lina with a happy voice.Carrying a walking stick,she smiled back.
Then,I held her hand, walking her slowly to the nearby bus stop.I found I didn't have
much trouble leading her,but I still felt stressed.
