In our writing club, we often shared our stories with a critique partner to give helpful feedback (反馈) so we could tell the best story.
Today my critique partner was Penny. As I handed my story to her, I was nervous. I had no problem coming up with great story ideas. I did have problems with spelling and grammar. Penny didn’t look at me or smile as she pushed her story across the table toward me. Why was she worried? She always got perfect scores on her spelling and grammar tests.
I read her story without stopping. It was perfect! I loved it. “Wow, great story,” I told her. “I don’t have any suggestions.”
“Yours too,” she mumbled (嘟哝). She didn’t even look at me as she passed mine back.
After class, Penny hurried out of the library. I noticed a book under her table. It must have fallen out of Penny’s bag. I read the description on the back and found it was just like Penny’s story! I couldn’t believe Penny had copied this idea! It wasn’t fair!
Outside of the school, I spotted (发现) Penny sitting on a bench. I walked over and handed the book to her. She hung her head, almost crying! All of a sudden, I wasn’t angry anymore. I remembered that my job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not to make her feel bad. But what should I say?
I kept thinking about Penny as I walked home. I decided to ask Mom for help. When I found her in the kitchen making dinner with Dad, I realized that Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great creative team. That gave me an idea to suggest to Penny.
At school the next morning, I found Penny at her locker.
“I thought I would love writing club, but I never have a single idea for a story,” she said.
“Well, I have ideas, but I wish I could write perfectly like you do,” I said.
“What if we worked on a story together? I bet we could come up with something great.”
A big smile was on Penny’s face.

According to a recent report, about 18% of China’s Internet users are under 19 years old. And nearly 1/4 of them are students. While benefiting a lot from the Internet, such as education and communication, teenagers often face dangers and risks. To better protect them, the Chinese government last year launched(启动) a special system which has come to be known as the “Teenager Mode(模式).” Many live online video platforms(平台) are now using it, but how effective is it?
“Teenager Mode” seems to be a firewall to protect teenage Internet users from overuse. Platforms have their own ways to do that, such as time limits and passwords. They can also prohibit rewarding, recharging(续费) and so on.
Although there are some advantages, “Teenager Mode” still has its problems. For example, many parents complain that their children can still see something unsuitable on some platforms although they use “Teenager Mode”. And if teenagers get hold of the full password, they can enter and exit whenever they like.
Experts say the system is still very new and it takes time and energy to improve it. “‘Teenager Mode’ doesn’t have the same standard yet. For platforms, they should make every effort to truly meet the requirements of the regulatory authorities (管理当局的要求),” said Wang Sixin, the president of Beijing Net Law Society.
Others say “Teenager Mode” doesn’t really limit the time teenagers spend online. They can simply go from one app or platform to another till they use up the time limit on each. To improve it, first of all, the time spent on each app or platform needs to be shared. Second, in order to help parents control their children’s time spent online, the app or platform can trigger(触发) an alarm to warn the parents.
In all, the system is an important first step to protect young people from the dangers and risks of the Internet, but more needs to be done.
27. According to the passage, “Teenager Mode” is launched to ________.
A. keep teenagers far away from their computers
B. show teenagers the benefits of the Internet
C. stop teenagers from overusing the Internet
D. protect teenagers from the dangers in their schools
28. The word “prohibit” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. provide B. allow C. change D. stop
29. What can you learn from the passage?
A. The “Teenager Mode” can only set passwords.
B. The “Teenager Mode” still has some problems.
C. Experts say the system will be improved soon.
D. Teenagers’ online time can be reduced successfully.
30. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To tell teenagers not to use the Internet.
B. To point out the disadvantages of the Internet.
C. To discuss the effects of the “Teenager Mode”.
D. To encourage parents to use the “Teenager Mode”.
D
Avoid conflicts with I-statements
It’s easy to point fingers when in a heated conversation. Wouldn’t it be great to change the direction of it and avoid conflicts(冲突)with one word? It’s possible. Conflicts often start and become worse by our choice of words. Words like “You are so…” or “How could you…?” start conversations on a bad note. Instead, start with an “I” and center on your thoughts and feelings about the matter.
Dr. Thomas Gordon coined the term I-message in the 1960s. I-message also known as I-statement is a form of sentence meant for expressing your thoughts without criticizing others.
I-statements enable you to express your opinion without using upsetting language. For example, “I forgot to ask you for directions after you invited me to come,” is better than “You invited me so you should’ve given me the directions.” In this way, you avoid getting into an argument with others or directly pointing out the other person’s mistake. Also, you carefully make them realize what’s going on, showing them how the situation makes you feel. Doing so clears up things, and you can finally have a meaningful, two-way conversation.
I-statements are useful in any conversation when you want to tell your side of the story in a more agreeable and reasonable way. Using an I-statement can also lead to necessary changes and even add warmth to your relationships. Strangers you come across will find you pleasant and considerate. You and your friends will continue to build trust in each other.
Yet not all statements(陈述)that begin with “I”are effective in avoiding conflicts. For example, “I feel like you’re responsible for this,” is as upsetting as “You’re wrong.” Thomas Gordon also said that to successfully use an I-statement, your words should match your tone(语调), facial expressions, body language, and how you feel.
What’s more, an I-statement also has its drawbacks. The repeated use of “I” can make you appear self-centered, especially in some cultures. Some may even think you’re weak and unable to understand opinions that aren’t yours. You have to be careful not to use the I-statement in a manner that destroys your effort to politely voice your real intention(意图).
All in all, correctly using the I-statement in conversations is a good way to avoid misunderstandings. By addressing a matter with vulnerability instead of immediately holding the other person responsible, you can keep respect and trust in your relationships. Whether it involves a classmate or a family member, expressing yourself well is key. Practice using I-statements effectively and you’ll be amazed how something so simple can make a huge difference in your social life.
31. When you use an I-statement in a conversation, you ________.
A. calmly point fingers without voicing your opinion
B. directly get into an argument with the other person
C. unknowingly change your thoughts about the matter
D. carefully express yourself to avoid misunderstandings
32. According to the passage which of these statements would help you avoid conflicts? ________
A. You should book a table earlier.
B. You never allow me to do anything fun.
C. I get nervous when you raise your voice.
D. I think you always make decisions without me.
33. The word “vulnerability” in the last paragraph probably means “ ________ ”.
A. great eagerness to be right B. readiness to give up
C. willingness to examine yourself D. a shortage of confidence
34. The writer would probably agree that ________.
A. I-statements show one’s inability to understand others
B. I-statements should be avoided in order not to appear self-centered
C. using I-statements can surely result in perfect two-way communication
D. using I-statements properly leads to improvements in one’s relationships
第II卷 (非选择题 共20分)
四、阅读表达(每小题2分,共8分)
Collecting As a Hobby
Collecting must be one of the various human activities, and it’s one that many psychologists find more attractive.
Some people collect because they want to make money. This could be called an instrumental (工具性) reason for collecting. They’ll look for antiques (古董) that they can buy cheaply and expect to sell at a profit (赢利). But there may be a psychological element, too—buying cheap and selling dear can give the collector a sense of achievement.
Another motive (动机) for collecting is the desire to find something special, such as a rare early recording by a particular singer. Some may spend their whole lives in a hunt for this. Psychologically, this can give a purpose to a life. There is a danger, though, that if the individual (个别的) is ever lucky enough to find what they’re looking for, they may feel empty, because the goal that drove them on has gone.
If you think about collecting stamps, another potential (潜在的) reason is its educational value. Stamp collecting opens a window to other countries, and to the plants, animals, or famous people shown on their stamps. In the 19th century, many collectors collected fossils (化石), animals and plants from around the world and their collections provided a large amount of information about the natural world. Without those collections, our understanding would be far behind what it is.
Not all collectors are interested in learning from their hobbies. Some people collect because of the need for a sense of control, perhaps as a way of dealing with insecurity (不安全). Stamp collectors, for instance, put their stamps in albums in a particularly order, perhaps by country in alphabetical order, or grouping stamps by people, birds, maps, and so on.
35 What is the instrumental reason for collecting?

24. How did Penny feel when she pushed her story to the writer?
A. Bored. B. Disappointed. C. Confused. D. Worried.
25. What did the writer find about Penny’s story after class?
A. It was a perfect story. B. Its idea was copied from a book.

32. According to the passage, which of these statements would help you avoid conflicts? ________
C using I-statements can surely result in perfect two-way communication
D using I-statements properly leads to improvements in one’s relationships
