Why did you start helping animals in this way?
I have loved and cared for all kinds of animals for as long as I can remember. A few years ago, I read news stories that said animals with difficulty getting around were put to death (处死). I had to come up with some ways to help them.

“Number 7, Jobie Nymble, is now in first place. Just one more hurdle (跨栏) and—” Everyone started cheering loudly. “Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles!” “Way to go, Jobie,” Jobie’s teammates shouted. “County championships (锦标赛), here we come,” Jobie said excitedly, touching her old green shoes. They were worn out, but she didn’t care. They were her lucky shoes.
“Next Saturday, we’re taking home the gold (金牌),” Jobie whispered to her shoes.
“Don’t forget,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”
Jobie was ________ all the week. Through practice, she jumped over hurdles faster than ever. Everything became a hurdle: flowerpots, sidewalk, even her little sister, Teka!
The day of Marisol’s party came, Jobie put on her favorite T-shirt, and her lucky shoes. “Perfect!” She smiled at herself in the mirror. Then she went to the party.
“Jobie!” Marisol rushed toward her, out of breath and without shoes. “You have to try the slide (滑梯).”
“Slide? What sli—”
Suddenly, she saw it: the BIGGEST slide she had ever seen. Without thinking, Jobie took off her shoes and ran to the slide. “Woo-hoo!” Jobie couldn’t get enough. She slid again and again.
When it was time to go home, Jobie returned to where she’d left her shoes. “Where are my lucky shoes?” she shouted. Her teammates helped her search the park, but the shoes were nowhere to be found. “Good bye, gold,” Jobie said sadly.
The next day, the county championships began. But Jobie’s feet danced nervously in her new shoes. “Next is the girls’ 100-meter hurdles.” Jobie felt nervous. “Go, Jobie!”
The starting buzzer (哨声) sounded. Quick as lightning, Jobie was off. Closer and closer she got. Just one more hurdle and—“Number 52, Jobie Nymble, takes the gold,” shouted somebody.
As she took off her shoes, Marisol cried, “Jobie, you broke a record!” Then she added, “Lucky you.” “Lucky me?” Jobie stopped for a moment. Then she looked down at her feet and smiled. No lucky shoes. Feeling happy, Jobie whispered, “Lucky me.”

Sherlock Holmes was an INTP. Ernest Hemingway was an ESTP. Michael Jackson was an ISFP… What do these four-lettered words mean? Well, if you have heard of (or have even taken) the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), then you may know something about it. With 93 questions, the test groups all of the different people in the world into 16 personality types. There are many other personality tests in the world, but the MBTI seems to be the most popular one. More than 1.5 million people take it every year. Some companies even use it to help choose their workers.
However, the MBTI is not a truly correct way to measure (估量) something as changeable as a person’s personality. The test, after all, was created (创造) in the early days of psychological research (心理学研究). Its creators, Katharine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs-Myers, were not trained (训练过的) psychologists. What’s more, the two were unable to scientifically prove (证明) their findings. “There is just no evidence behind the MBTI,” said Adam Grant, an American psychologist. “Almost none of the characteristics measured by the test can tell how happy you’ll be in a situation or how well you’ll do at your job.”
If the result of MBTI is not always correct, then how has this test managed to become so popular? To answer this question, we need to find out what drove Briggs and Briggs-Myers to create it in the first place. Briggs was a mother. After reading Carl Jung’s Psychological Types, she decided to create a tool to help parents understand their children’s interests. Briggs-Myers continued to work on the MBTI in the 1940s and started using it among workers. Traditional (传统的) personality tests would put people into two groups: those who were good and those who were bad.
However, Briggs thought it was not right. When creating her test, she wanted everyone to be able to understand that while people may be different from one another, they are all created equal (平等的). Maybe this holds the key to the MBTI’s success: The test never paints a personality hopelessly. The MBTI may not be the best way for measuring if a person is fit for the job, but this doesn’t mean it’s not useful at all. Many people are hungry for self-knowledge.
34. What can we learn about personality tests?
A. Over 1.5 million people take personality tests every year.
B. They started to be used by people as early as in the 1940s.
C. Some personality tests only group people into two types.
D Companies use them to know more about their workers’ hobbies.
35. What does the underlined word “evidence” in Paragraph 2 refer to (指代)?
A. True facts. B. True supporters. C. Real competitions. D. Real success.
36. What is the writing purpose (目的) of the passage?
A. To tell why Briggs began the MBTI test. B. To show the importance of the MBTI test.
C. To advise people to take the MBTI test. D. To make people know something about MBTI.
37. The following sentence can best be put at the end of ________. And the MBTI just offers that knowledge in a nice way.
A. Paragraph 1 B. Paragraph 2 C. Paragraph 3 D. Paragraph 4

1. —________ did Mr. Wu say about the Palace Museum?
—He said the rulers of the Ming and Qing dynasties used to live there.
A. Who B. How C. When D. What
Who谁,How如何;When什么时候;What什么。根据“He said the rulers of the Ming and Qing dynasties used to live there.”
2. —Tom, be careful! You almost hurt ________ with that knife!
—I will, Mum.
A. myself B. yourself C. himself D. herself
根据“You almost hurt ... with that knife!”

根据“Mum is on an important work call.”
4. —How was your English speaking competition yesterday?
—Not bad. I think I did ________ this time.
A. better B. best C. worse D. worst
【答案】A

D. Companies use them to know more about their workers’ hobbies.
35. What does the underlined word “evidence” in Paragraph 2 refer to (指代)?
A. True facts. B. True supporters. C. Real competitions. D. Real success.
