Tannis Chartier, a third-year University of Lethbridge student in the Therapeutic Recreation Program is providing meaningful opportunities for unhoused people to enjoy recreational pastimes like bingo, movies and karaoke.
She got the idea for the Resilient Rec YQL program when she began volunteering at the Soup Kitchen in 2020. “I saw this huge need, ” Chartier said. “We were filling the physical needs of the people, giving them some shelters and food. But we weren’t giving them meaning and purpose, and we weren’t giving them an opportunity to move up and fill their needs to socialize. ”
In response, Chartier initially conceived the Resilient Art YQL program and approached the director of the Soup Kitchen about implementing the concept. The Soup Kitchen was on board and provided some funds to buy art supplies and offered their space so that, once a week, people could come to the Soup Kitchen and create art. The finished artworks were posted to a Facebook page and offered for sale, with the profits going to support the needs, like a new pair of boots or a new backpack, of the artist.
“We did that for about a year, and it was wonderful, ” she said. “The next summer we organized a day in the park. We went to Henderson Lake and kayaked a little bit and played lawn games. ”
Even though the art and park events were successful, Chartier thought more people might attend if the activities had broader appeal. “Some people hear the word ‘art’, and they freak out and don’t come because they think they’re not artistic, ” she said. “So, we changed our name to Resilient Rec YQL and we started running things like bingo nights, movie nights, and karaoke nights-all sorts of fun events. We wanted them to feel at home in an environment where they feel safe to have fun. ”
4. What can we know about Resilient Rec YQL program from paragraph 2?
A. Its origin. B. Its challenges. C. Its development. D. Its achievements.
5. How does Chartier feel about the events held by Resilient Rec YQL?
A. Loosely-planned. B. Privacy-ensured. C. Well-received. D. Time-consuming.
6. What does the underlined phrase “freak out” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Feel meaningless. B. Feel upset. C. Feel bored. D. Feel helpless.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Being kind to the unhoused increases your own well-being.
B. An art-based program helps the people in need make a living.
C. An after-school program teaches unhoused residents to enjoy art.
D. A university student develops recreation opportunities for unhoused residents.

PARIS-The Chinese women’s volleyball team won a quarterfinal spot of 2024 Paris Olympics with an easy 3-0 win over hosts France in their second Group A match here on Thursday.
The 25-18, 25-16, 25-19 victory ensured China’s team in the knockout stage with one group match remaining, joining Brazil, Poland, Italy, and Turkey, who have also secured the quarterfinal spots. With two wins in a row and five points, China’s team currently lead Group A, ahead of Serbia and the United States, who each have one win.
In Group B, Brazil and Poland both have secured two wins, while Japan and Kenya remain winless. Group C saw Italy and Turkey also achieve two victories, with the Netherlands taking a win. The situation indicates even if China lost their final group match, their wins and points will still be sufficient to surpass the third place teams in Groups B and C, according to the tournament’s qualification rules.
In the first set against France, China started strong with a 5-0 run, forcing an early timeout. Despite a brief rally (反弹) led by Lucille Gicquel’s powerful serves, China regained control with improved receiving. The second set followed a similar pattern, with China quickly establishing a lead that France couldn’t overcome. Although France managed to tie the score at12-12 in the third set and momentarily stopped China’s momentum (势头), the Chinese team regained dominance to close out the match.
“The French side is not a weak team. They have powerful serves and good block height, but they made too many mistakes, ” commented a China’s head coach.
“It will be really hard, like I mentioned, we are in a strong group, it would be really hard to beat another team, but we are here and we are playing against China for the first time, and we are going to play the US, so we are taking some experience for the next time, ” said Lucille Gicquel who got a team high 10 points for France.
8. How many points has the Chinese women’s volleyball team earned after two group matches?
A. 3 points B. 4 points C. 5 points D. 6 points
9. What can be inferred about the Chinese team’s qualification for the quarterfinals?
A. They must win the final group match to advance.
B. Their current performance guarantees a quarterfinal spot regardless of the final match result.
C. They need to surpass the third-place teams in all groups to qualify.
D. The result of the final group match will significantly affect their qualification.
10. What can we infer from Lucille Gicquel’s comment?
A. France will avoid playing against strong teams in the future.
B. The French team lacks confidence in competing with top teams.
C. France believes they can defeat China in future matches.
D. Playing against China and the US is a valuable experience for France.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To report on China’s victory over France and their qualification for the Paris Olympics quarterfinals.
B. To analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Chinese and French volleyball teams.
C. To compare the performance of different teams in the volleyball tournament.
D To discuss the importance of group stage match es in the Olympics.

Between at least 1995 and 2010, I was seen to be insane just because I was speaking in public about the “Internet prophecy (预言 )”. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a novelty-I even believe it may have existed in its fullness in a very distant and forgotten past. Nevertheless, it is now the topic of the moment.
Its origin began in ancient times with the stories of artificial beings that naturally had intelligence, or even consciousness, by their creators.
Although the term “Artificial Intelligence” was coined in 1956, the concept of creating intelligent machines dates back to ancient times in human history. Since ancient times, humanity has developed a fascination with building intelligent tools that could imitate or reproduce human intelligence.
Throughout the centuries, the idea of building intelligent machines continued to evolve, driven by advances in science and technology. In the 19th century, scientists and inventors such as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace made significant contributions to the development of computing and the early concepts of programming. Their ideas paved the way for the creation of machines that could process information logically and perform complex tasks.
It was in the second half of the 20th century that AI, as a science, began to establish itself. With the coming of modern computers and increasing processing power, scientists started exploring algorithms (算法) and techniques to imitate aspects of human intelligence. The first experiments with expert systems and machine learning opened up new perspectives and possibilities.
After about 60 years in a hidden state, AI is starting to have its moment. A range of applications in various fields, including voice and image recognition, natural language understanding, and autonomous cars, have awakened the “giant”. It is the rebirth of AI in an ideal area for this purpose. The perfect moment!
We, as human beings, will not rest until we unlock all the mysteries and secrets of existence. It is in our nature!
12. What did the people around the author think of him at the beginning of this century?
A. He was a talented inventor. B. He went crazy in thinking.
C. He was good at making prophecies. D. He had doubt about the future of AI.
13. What does the underlined word “coined” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Controlled. B. Reserved. C. Invented. D. Abandoned.
14. What is a consequence of the use of AI according to the text?
A. Moral decline. B. Lack of electricity.
C. Environmental harm. D. The popularity of self-drive cars.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Rise of Artificial Intelligence B. Pioneers in Artificial Intelligence
C How to Use Artificial Intelligence? D. Can We Live without Artificial Intelligence?

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I saw a display of gratitude journals at the local bookstore one day after school. I decided to buy one of them. My plan was that from January 1, I would write five things every day that I was grateful for in my life. I looked forward to sharing my colorful life with my journal.
Starting the journal was fun, and I found five things to be grateful for every day without any problem at all. With my life sailing along so joyfully, it was easy to be grateful. I enjoyed the simple pleasure of sitting at my room every evening and writing my five entries. I entered the names of new friends my family met and the musicals we saw together, the new restaurants we tried, the touching things that my friend said to me, the exciting things that they were doing, and the encouraging comments from my parents. The words spilled on and on from my pen.
However, my life changed quickly and unexpectedly. On a Saturday afternoon in early February, there was a knock on my door that changed my life forever. When I opened the door, two men who worked with my father stood in front of me with sad expressions on their faces. They told me that my father had been found on the floor in his office and taken to the hospital. Sadly, it was too late. My father had already left.
Keeping my gratitude journal wasn’t so easy after that. Through February and March, the pages of my journal stayed empty. I was too filled with fear and sorrow to make room for gratitude. As several weeks went by, I began to realize that it was during the hard times that we most needed to find and acknowledge the good things in our life. We are not expected to be thankful for all circumstances, but we are to be thankful in all circumstances.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I decided to take on the challenge of being thankful and positive in the midst of my sorrow.

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to seek your advice as our English Reading Club is looking to purchase some science fiction books.
We are particularly interested in novels that can stimulate our imagination and provide insights into future technologies. We would greatly appreciate it if you could recommend a few titles that you believe would be both engaging and thought-provoking for our members. Your expertise in literature would be invaluable to us.
Thank you very much for your assistance.

【答案】One possible version:
I decided to take on the challenge of being thankful and positive in the midst of my sorrow. I didn’t want to be the kind of person who gave up on life. Once again I sat down at the end of the day and tried to find five things that I was grateful for and write them in my journal. What had been so easy before my father’s death became a nightly struggle. What had been a joyful family atmosphere was replaced by silence and tears, and when I tried to write what I was grateful for, my mind was filled with the sadness in my life. Though trapped in the sea of sorrow, I was eager that gratitude would shine into my heart like a ray of sunlight.
One evening, I remembered crying and writing “I’m glad that this day is over.” five times. These new entries into my journal were like a baby’s first steps. They were shaking but determined, and often ended with a fall. However, I kept on and slowly my gratefulness for life returned. By making myself write something every day, I forced my soul to see and feel the good mixed within my pain. I still cried into my pillow some nights but I began to understand that I was lucky to have so many memories that were worth crying about.
