I'm honor to talk to your class today about something I know a thing or two about being afraid. As you can see, I was born without arms. Every time I fell down, I was scared that I wouldn't be able to get up. My parents were too poor to afford plastic arms for me, but luckily, one of my doctors, doctor Wilson, showed me how to use my feet to do everything. Once I could do a few things by myself, I didn't feel scared of being alone anymore. In high school, everyone in my class made fun of me every morning. I was afraid of what they would say that was the hardest in darkest time in my life. But my teacher, mrs. Dt, made sure I stay focused on my school work. SHE taught me to be strong and confident. Once I realized that I didn't matter what other people thought of me. I wasn't scared of being in the crowds anymore. Now that I have my own successful law company in manchester, I can afford those plastic alarms. Maybe I will give them one day. But for now, my missing arms remind me every day that I don't have anything to be afraid of. Thank you, ms. Jackson. It’s 1:30 am in Kenya’s populated north, and 50 people are lying on their backs on the shore of a dried-up river, staring up at the night sky. These stargazers have travelled 250 miles to Samburu to witness the Perseid meteor shower(英仙座流星雨). They are not disappointed: Every few minutes, arrows of light shoot across the sky like silent fireworks.
The Star Safari is organised by a Kenyan astronomer, Susan Murabana, who has brought a 50 kg,170 cm-long telescope to allow the group to view Mars and deep-sky objects. But here in Samburu, where light pollution is minimal, the Perseid meteors—visible with the naked eye (裸眼)—steal the show.
Every two months, Murabana and her husband load their telescope on to the roof of their 4×4 and set off to rural communities, where they give up to 300 children a chance to view the planets and learn about constellations (星座) and the basics of astrophysics. They primarily targets schools in remote areas because of her mission to give girls an opportunity that she wishes had been available to her.
“When I started this work, I didn’t see people who looked like me. I was a lone ranger and I wanted to change that.” says Murabana.
“There is a common misconception in Kenya that astronomy in general is hard, boring, and only for boys,” she adds. “I’d like to teach young girls that astronomy is neither of these things and that they, too, can become astronomers,” says Murabana.
Murabana’s passion for astronomy began in her early 20s when her uncle invited her to join a similar outreach session organized by the Cosmos Education. “That was a gamechanger. If an outreach group had come to me when I was a young teenager, my attitude towards a career in astronomy would have been positive. I ended up studying sociology and economics, but maybe I would have desired to be an astronomer,” she says.
Inspired by the Cosmos Education, Murabana completed an online master’s degree in astronomy with the James Cook University in 201l and set up her own outreach programme. She looked to Dr Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space, as a role model. “I hope that one day, through this work, I will spark a chain reaction that leads to the first African woman in space.”
24.What do the underlined words “steal the show” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Ruin the effort. B.Face the challenge.
C.Attract more attention. D.Keep the promise.
25.Why does Murabana target girl students in remote areas?
A.To help them out of poverty. B.To inspire their love of astronomy.
C.To look for assistants for her work. D.To give them an edge over boys in studies.
26.What can we learn about Murabana from paragraph 6?
A.She enjoyed playing games.
B.She longed to be an astronomer.
C.She is an initiator of Cosmos Education.
D.She regretted not taking astronomy earlier.
27.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.The birth of a Kenyan woman astronomer.
B.The prejudice against girls in rural Kenyan.
C.The Kenyan astronomer bringing astronomy to the people.
D.The Kenyan stargazers watching the Perseid meteors shower.

Dr. Raint Mishori of Georgetown University Hospital says many people believe it's possible to become immune to colds. But that's not the Case. “There are about 200 different viruses that cause the common cold and people think that once you get a cold, you develop immunity for the rest of your life . This is wrong.” She said.
There are many other common beliefs about colds that medical science doesn't support. How many of us believe the main cause of the common cold is exposure to cold temperatures? Even some studies have shown that people get sick more frequently during the winter.
But Dr. Mishori says it is not because of cold weather. It's because people tend to gather and the way the common cold virus is transmitted from one person to another is through handshake, through sneezing, or through coughing on one another.
While there is no actual cure for the common cold, Dr. Mishori says there are still a few things you can do to help reduce its duration and ease symptoms. Though the medical community says Vitamin C does not help prevent colds, there is definitely some proof that it helps keep them from being as bad. “So if you catch a cold and start taking about two grams of Vitamin C a day, there is evidence that it might shorten the number of days that you will be suffering with these symptoms.” Dr. Mishori stated.
In addition, medical science says honey and chicken soup are effective against colds. Especially honey. “There is increased evidence that it helps shorten the duration of the common cold sometimes even by two to three days particularly in children,” Dr. Mishori said. “Chicken soup also helps reduce the duration of the cold.”
There's also a common belief that you should “feed a cold and starve a fever.” Dr. Mishori says “not necessary”. “If you do have a cold and you don't feel like eating anything, it's not going to hurt you but you have to drink a lot and you can drink water or you can drink tea, anything that gets fluids into your body, “she said, “That's very important.”
So—if drinking fluids is a good idea—what about milk? “I will never give milk to a child who has got bad phlegm. My son used to have that and he would threw up.” Nadine Audrewy, a proud grandmother of 5, believes it's not a good idea to give milk to a child who has a cold.
Well, says Dr. Mishori, maybe and maybe not. “Dairy products do not cause increased secretions but they can thicken the secretions,” she explained. “So it's possible that discomfort is increased when you drink milk, but obviously if you are a baby and it's all you drink then you should not stop giving babies milk.”
There are many other myths about colds that do not stand the test of science. Doctors say the best advice is to continue using whatever works best for you. Even if it doesn't make the cold better, it won't make it worse either— while you wait for the cold to just run its natural course.
28.A medical expert will probably agree__________.
A.people develop total immunity after a cold
B.viruses spread only in winters
C.a cold may be the result of human contacts
D.low temperatures are major threats to our health
29.If you believe in the saying of “feed a cold and starve a fever”, you will __________when having a cold.
A.drink a lot to get fluids B.have as much tea as possible
C.force yourself to eat a lot D.starve yourself to kill the virus
30.According to the passage, Dr. Mishori believes ___________.
A.exposure to cold weather is the main cause of common colds
B.getting fluids into bodies can cure colds
C.chicken soup and Vitamin C help prevent colds
D.dairy products may increase the discomfort of a child with a cold
31.The underlined word “myths” probably means ___________.
A.common yet mistaken beliefs B.recent scientific discoveries
C.experience from older generations D.conclusions proved by researches

Today’s amazing newspaper headline!
First family of four to walk to the South Pole wearing Mickey Mouse ears and clown’s shoes.
No, not really. It isn’t true. I invented it. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see it one day soon. It seems that every week someone becomes ”the first” or “the youngest” or “the oldest” or even “the first married couple” to do something that doesn’t seem to be very useful to the rest of humanity.
This year I’ve seen headlines saying “The youngest person to sail the Atlantic alone”, “The youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest”, and “The first people to fly around the world in a hot air balloon”. Why do they do it? Don’t they have better things to do with their time and money? And why should I be interested anyway?
Human beings have already climbed the highest mountains, sailed across the oceans and flown around the world. People have already reached the most remote parts of our planet. Many of these things were done a long, long time ago. There just isn’t anything left to explore nowadays. I suppose there’s still a lot of the universe left, and the bottom of the oceans is still a bit of a mystery, but you need a lot of technology to explore areas like that. So, those people who feel the need for adventure can only do things that have been done before. So they have to try and do it in a new way, or be “the fastest” or “the youngest” or “the oldest” to do something that isn’t really new at all.
What is so great about climbing Mount Everest these days anyway? It’s become a popular tourist trip. People pay thousands of dollars to be taken up the mountain by the local Sherpas, who lead the way and carry the bags. At any one time there are about a thousand people either climbing up or on their way back down. As a result, Everest is covered with rubbish and the Sherpas have to make special trips up the mountain to pick it up. The climbers are often inexperienced and when they get into trouble other people have to risk their lives to bring them down to safety. Helicopter crews have been killed trying to reach people who were stuck on the mountain.
In January 2003 a helicopter carrying two British men crashed into the sea near Antarctica. I’m not quite sure what they were trying to be “the first” or “the youngest” to do. The Chilean navy picked them up after a nine-hour rescue mission that cost tens of thousands of pounds, all paid for by the Chilean and British taxpayers.
Talking of taxpayers, many Australians are getting a bit fed up with record breakers. A lot of people trying to break sailing or rowing records get into trouble in the seas around Australia, so the Australian navy has to send ships to save them. There have been a lot of difficult, time-consuming rescue missions in recent years costing the Australian government millions of dollars. I suppose we can’t just leave them to drown, but personally, I think we should give the bill to the people who are rescued. Perhaps they would think twice about doing it if they had to pay for expensive insurance premiums (保费). Then I wouldn’t have to read about them in the newspapers either.

Mold (霉菌) is unpleasant because of how it looks and smells. Some people have the habit of removing mold from food in order to consume the unaffected rest. 36
Removing the moldy parts doesn’t guarantee that the toxins (毒素) present in the product will be removed completely. Therefore, they can cause illness or food poisoning. Only hard and dry foods can be consumed once the moldy part has been removed. Therefore, you should completely throw away soft and moist foods in this situation. 37 We can’t afford to ignore the presence of molds on the surface and inside products. However it’s okay to eat cured meat products, firm fruits, and vegetables.
38 Many of these have to do with the consumption of raw foods that haven’t undergo the appropriate processes. For example, eat some fruits without washing them thoroughly. Some chemicals are often added to them while they are being grown or processed. Besides, consuming raw or undercooked white fish, without prior freezing, also increases the risk of contamination (污染) with anisakis (胃线虫). 39 Experts usually recommend unfreezing products in the refrigerator. This prevents temperatures that are favorable for bacterial growth.
In addition, you must take care when handling raw foods and cooked foods to avoid cross-contamination. Cross-contamination can occur through indirect spread of microorganisms by equipment, food handlers, cook facilities or surfaces. 40 Microorganisms could pass from one to the other and certain microorganisms cause most types of food poisoning. After entering the body, these living things release poisons that make people sick.
A.These problems exist everywhere.
B.You should never use the same tools.
C.There are other dangerous situations

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Organizing a big event is a very difficult and stressful task. One of the 56 (common) challenges that an organizer would face are issues about security and crowd control. If things are not 57 (good) organized, security issues like a major stampede can happen anytime.
The 58 (define) of stampedes is a situation in which a group of people or large animals suddenly start running in the same direction, especially because they are scared or excited. The situation causes an uproar which may 59 (threat) people’s lives or cause property damages, and in extreme cases it can lead up to lots of deaths.
The incidents 60 people have been caught in deadly stampedes are on the rise. Over the last 18 months alone, we 61 (witness) seven tragic incidents with at least 407 people losing their lives. On Saturday, more than 150 people, mainly young women and men
62 their teens and 20s, were killed when a 100,000-strong crowd were crushed on a narrow street during Halloween festivities in Itaewon, in South Korea’s capital, Seoul.
There is evidence 63 people’s security awareness plays a vital part in avoiding such tragedies. 64 (have) the knowledge and awareness of how to spot and effectively handle dangerous situations will enable people to make the right decisions for themselves. No matter where you are, you should take a moment 65 (make) a mental note of all the exits in a venue as soon as you arrive. Move in the same direction of the crowd. Keep your hands up by your chest, like a boxer. If you fall, get up quickly. If you can’t get up, get someone to pull you up or cover your head with your arms. Curl up into the fetal position (do not lay on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs).

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was my first day of school. I loved school: the smell of chalk and colored crayons and having my own desk that was just my size. However, there was one big problem with school: Mildred.
Daily when I walked the short distance home after school, Mildred would hit me and scare me. I was absolutely terrified of her. She had failed first grade and was a year older than me. Mildred didn’t have any friends, so she seemed to concentrate on making enemies. Because I was one of the smallest children in first grade, she had selected me as her number one enemy.
As soon as the dismissal bell rang each day, my heart started to pound and I blinked fast so I wouldn’t cry.
Pretty soon my mother figured out something was wrong at school. I didn’t want to tell her about Mildred. Mother continued to question me, and I finally sobbed out the whole story. I begged not to go to school and didn’t sleep much that night. The next morning she said, “Marion, I’m going to walk up the hill with you today. I believe we’ll see Mildred.” Mildred walked from way across down to school. She never bothered me on the way to school, only afterward.
“Oh, mama, please don’t do that! Don’t say anything to Mildred. It will just make her mad. Let me stay home by myself. Please, mama.”
“Hurry and get dressed, Marion.” Her voice was gentle, but quite firm.
“Ple-e-ease, mama.”
“Trust, Marion. I have a plan.”
We bundled up against the bitter cold wind and stared out. Maybe we wouldn’t see Mildred, I hoped. But my mother had this confident look. I knew the look well, and I had a sinking feeling that we would see Mildred and that mother would use her “plan”.
Just as we were turning around at a corner when we spotted Mildred. We waited a few moments as she approached us. “Hello, Mildred.” my mother said.

Paragraph 1:
Mildred stopped, frozen as still as a statue. Her hands and face were bright red and the oversized coat hung open with only two buttons. Mother stooped down, rapidly buttoning her coat. “I'm Marion's mother. I need your help, Mildred.” Mildred looked intently at my mother. “Marion doesn't have any sisters. She sort of needs a special friend at school. Would you be her friend?”
Paragraph 2:
Mildred chewed on her bottom lip and then nodded. “Oh, thank you! I just know you are someone I can depend on.” Then she hugged Mildred long and hard. I found Mildred smiling! I'd never seen her smile before. We walked up the hill each day after school together, and pretty soon we were talking, laughing and sharing secrets. I started calling her “Mil”, and then others did too, even Miss Edna. She always sat with me at lunch. My mother usually included something in my lunch especially for Mil-even notes of gratitude. Mildred smiled a lot now. She was getting good grades too, and didn't stuff her papers inside her desk anymore. I knew my mother’s plan had worked and I’ve learned that the plan works in all kinds of impossible situations: "Love is patient and love never fails.”
