In a world where career paths are often linear, Morten Holm, a 56-year-old Danish architect, shows the dynamic lifestyle, transitioning from architect to urban designer, and now operator of a nature school on a suburban farm. Yet, beneath these varied titles lies a singular goal: to create urban oases (绿洲) that harmonize city life with nature.
His first visit to China was a 2001 business trip, sparking lasting curiosity. Ten years later, Holm moved to China to set up a new partnership, aiming to understand and learn from or even be part of the country’s rapid development.
Among his projects, Beijing’s Liangma River renovation (恢复) stands out. Inspired by Copenhagen’s urban renovation, Beijing’s Chaoyang district held a competition for the project. Before renovation, the river was neglected and ecologically degraded. Holm armed to create a “soft living space” to boost local businesses and enhance residents’ quality of life. “When urbanization reaches a certain level, it’s not just about quantity, but about making life more livable, increasing the quality of life, and making people happier,” he said. Today, the river is a beloved urban resting place.
But Holm’s vision extends beyond urban projects. In 2020, he and his wife transformed his in-laws’ orchard (果园) into an organic farm and green school called Fenfuram, inspired by Denmark’s green education models. “We offer courses for both schools and families in animal and food literacy and sustainable development goals,” Holm said. “These courses allow children to connect with nature. Our curriculum goes beyond the classroom, creaming a kind of school extension and serving as an urban oasis.”
4. What is Morten Holm’s core goal?
A. To become a successful architect.
B. To build nature-city blended areas.
C. To transform cities into rural areas.
D. To promote suburban farming.
5. Why did Holm decide to move to China in 2011?
A. To participate in an architecture competition.
B. To escape linear career paths in Denmark.
C. To engage with China’s rapid development.
D. To undertake urban renovation projects.
6. What was Liangma River Project aimed at according to Holm?
A. Drawing citizens’ attention to the river.
B. Copying Copenhagen’s renovation model.
C. Rebuilding eco-friendly urban spaces.
D. Reducing housing in Chaoyang district
7. How does Fenfuram help fulfill Holm’s ambition?
A. It helps improve children’s academic performance.
B. It promotes Danish agricultural techniques in China.
C. It extends his concept through the nature education.
D. It replaces traditional classroom learning entirely.
C
A few years ago, you went on a vacation with friends, creating lasting memories — walking along the beach, swimming in the sea, and enjoying breathtaking sunsets. However, the trip wasn't all smooth sailing; long drives, food issues, and unpredictable weather. Yet, over time, you tend to remember the beautiful moments while the inconveniences fade . This is known as rosy retrospection, a cognitive , bias (认知偏见) where people recall past experiences more positively than they felt during the actual event.
The phenomenon can be understood as the complex interaction of cognitive mechanisms that shape our memory processes When recalling memories, our brains tend to focus on positive details and downplay negative aspects, which helps maintain emotional well-being. Nostalgia (怀旧) also plays a significant role, as it arouses feelings of warmth and belonging, leading us to view the past more positively. Additionally, our current emotional state and self-enhancement bias can influence how we remember past events, making them seem more favorable.
While some individuals who focus more on negative experiences may be at a higher risk of mood disorders such as depression, rosy retrospection can elevate our moods, increase life satisfaction, and even help us cope with difficult present circumstances by providing a sense of continuity and positive self-identity.
However, rosy retrospection occasionally creates an unrealistic view of the past, which can head people to make decisions that are not based on reality but rather on their idealized memories. It's one of the reasons why we might repeatedly return to unhealthy relationships. The longer the time that has passed since the event, the more likely we are to let the, good memories outweigh the bad memories and perhaps even forgive unforgivable behavior. Understanding and acknowledging this cognitive bias can be crucial for making accurate and beneficial decisions.
8. How do people with rosy retrospection generally recall past experiences?
A. They forget negative moments easily.
B. They recall breathtaking details repeatedly.
C. They remember adventurous trips more clearly.
D. They view former experiences more positively.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The meaning of rosy retrospection.
B. The reasons for rosy retrospection.
C. The role of nostalgia in shaping memories.
D. The ways of keeping emotional well-being.
10. What does the underlined word “elevate” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Boost. B. Expose. C. Assess. D. Ignore.
11. What negative consequence may rosy retrospection cause?
A. It may give rise to incorrect judgments.
B. It may lead to a constant state of depression.
C. It may make people miss out on opportunities.
D. It may raise people's unwillingness to face reality.
D
Neurons (神经元) have historically been the cell most associated with memory. But far outside the brain, kidney (肾) cells can also store information and recognize patterns in a similar way to neurons, researchers report November 7 in Nature Communications.
In experiments, the kidney cells showed signs of a “massed-space effect”. This well-known feature of how memory works in the brain facilitates storing information in small groups over time, rather than a big group at once.
In neurons, when a chemical signal passes through, the cell starts producing CREB, a protein central to memory processing. The protein then turns on more genes that further change the cell, kick-starting the molecular (分子的) memory machine. Kukushkin and colleagues set out to determine whether CREB in non-neuronal cells responds to incoming signals the same way.
The researchers implanted an artificial gene into human kidney cells, which included instructions for producing a glowing protein found in fireflies (萤火虫). The team then watched the cells respond to artificial chemical pulses that copy the signals that activate the memory activation pathways in neurons. “Depending on how much light the glowing protein produces, we know how strongly that memory gene was turned on,” Kukushkin says.
“This massed-space effect has never been seen outside a brain,” Kukushkin says. “But we propose that if you give non-brain cells complicated enough tasks, they may also be able to form a memory.”
Neuroscientist Ashok Hegde finds the study interesting as it applies a. neuroscience principle broadly to understand gene expression in non-neuronal cells. But it’s unclear how applicable the findings are to other kinds of cells, says Hegde. Still, he says this research may someday help with the search for potential drugs to treat human disease, especially those where memory loss occurs.
“Maybe we can think of cancer cells as having memories, and think about what they can learn from the pattern of treatment,” Kukushkin says. “Maybe we need to consider not just how much drug we are giving a person, but what is the time pattern of that drug, just as we think about how to learn more efficiently.”
12. What can we learn about the “massed-space effect”?
A. It helps form long-term memory in brain cells.
B. It enhances memory processing in kidney cells.
C. It contributes to storing information in large units.
D. It demonstrates how memory functions in the brain.
13. Why did researchers use a glowing protein from fireflies?
A. To test the chemical resistance of cells. B. To visualize the structure of kidney cells.
C. To track the activation level of memory genes. D. To copy the memory activation signals in neurons.
14. What is Kukushkin’s main suggestion for cancer treatment?
A. Adopting shorter medication cycles. B. Finding efficient learning strategies.
C. Increasing the total amount of drug. D. Designing the treatment schedule of drug.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Massed-Space Effect of Neurons
B. Kidney Cells’ Capability to Store Memory
C. The Discovery of a New Protein in Kidney Cells
D. The Role of CREB Protein in Memory Processing

In our weekly staff meeting, our editor Ashley was not pleased with the quality of our reporting. “Our readership is way down. We need better stories for this Thursday’s school newspaper. Does anybody have any ideas?” she said.
I handed her my article about our basketball team beating Deerfield High School the previous night by one point. “Sports stories are fun,” she said, “but not good enough for the front page. We need something to really get people ‘s attention.”
After our meeting, we left the newsroom together and heard someone screaming, “Perry is missing!” Perry was a big red parrot and had been our school mascot (吉祥物) for ten years. He played an important role in students’ lives, both in and out of class. He had also been a constant presence at school events, inspiring a sense of unity among students.
Everyone gathered around Perry’s empty cage, heartbroken. Suddenly, a student from the crowd came over and showed me a photo. “You’re a reporter for the school paper, right? I happened to take this yesterday,” he said. In the photo was a Deerfield High School basketball player with something large hidden under his shirt around the size of a parrot.
“He must have stolen Perry to get back at us for winning the game!” Ashley cried. We hurried back to the newsroom, agreeing to run the photo on the front page with the headline “Deerfeld Stole Perry.” “This is just the story we need. Everyone will read it,” Ashley said confidently.
After she left, I took a closer look at the photo. The clock in the background read 4:15 pm, but our game against Deerfield hadn’t started until 4:30 pm. Why would the boy have taken Perry before we even played? An uneasy feeling came over me that we might have falsely accused someone.
I went to Perry’s usual caretaker to ask if he knew Perry was missing. ”He’s not missing. He’s retired. He’s ready for some quieter days,“ he said. Learning the truth, I immediately told Ashley and suggested writing a story to say goodbye to Perry.

1.续写词数应为150左右:

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. C 7.

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. A

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段“This is known as rosy retrospection, a cognitive bias (认知偏见) where people recall past experiences more positively than they felt during the actual event.(这被称为玫瑰色回忆效应,是一种认知偏见,在这种情况下,人们回忆过去的经历时比实际经历时更加积极)”可知,产生玫瑰色回忆效应的人通常会更积极地看待以前的经历,故选D项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“The phenomenon can be understood as the complex interaction of cognitive mechanisms that shape our memory processes.(这种现象可以被理解为塑造我们记忆过程的认知机制的复杂相互作用)”、“When recalling memories, our brains tend to focus on positive details and downplay negative aspects, which helps maintain emotional well-being. Nostalgia (怀旧) also plays a significant role, as it arouses feelings of warmth and belonging, leading us to view the past more positively.( 回忆往事时,大脑往往会聚焦于积极细节,淡化负面因素,这有助于保持情绪健康。
根据第三段“While some individuals who focus more on negative experiences may be at a higher risk of mood disorders such as depression, rosy retrospection can elevate our moods, increase life satisfaction, and even help us cope with difficult present circumstances by providing a sense of continuity and positive self-identity (自我认同)( 虽然一些更多关注负面经历的人可能患抑郁等情绪障碍的风险更高,但玫瑰色回忆效应可以elevate我们的情绪,提高生活满意度,甚至通过提供一种连续性和积极的自我认同感来帮助我们应对当前的困难处境)”可知,前半句提到那些更多关注负面经历的人患情绪障碍(如抑郁)的风险更高,while表示对比转折,可推理出后半句玫瑰色回忆效应应该是能带来积极的影响,“elevate our moods”与“increase life satisfaction(提高生活满意度)”并列,可推测“elevate”意思是“提升、促进”,与“Boost(促进)”意思相近,故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“However, rosy retrospection occasionally creates an unrealistic view of the past, which can lead people to make decisions that are not based on reality but rather on their idealized memories.(然而,玫瑰色回忆效应偶尔会对过去产生不切实际的看法,这可能会导致人们做出的决定不是基于现实,而是基于他们理想化的记忆)”可知,玫瑰色回忆效应的一个潜在负面影响是它会导致不正确的判断,故选A项。

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. B

故填an。

考查介词。句意:与10年前相比,该地区的水源涵养量每年增长11%。表示“增长了……”,用rise by,所以此处填介词by。故填by。
【43题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:当地居民享受着大自然的馈赠,国家公园的建立使他们从开发自然转变为成为自然的保护者并从中受益。enable sb. to do sth.为固定搭配,意为“使某人能够做某事”,所以此处用动词不定式to transform。故填to transform。

【答案】范文
To my surprise, Ashley insisted on reporting the “Deerfield Stole Perry” story. “This is the very story we need to attract more readers,” she argued. To convince her, I defended that if we wrote this article, we would be telling a lie. Noticing her hesitant expression, I further explained the potential harm it would cause to the player and our, paper ‘s reputation. After some discussion, Ashley finally gave in, “OK, let’s try with real stories.“ Then I went to gather all the necessary information to write an article about Perry and the precious memories we shared over the years.
On Thursday, the paper came out with the headline “Bye-Bye, Perry” on the front page. Soon, it sparked heated discussions among students about Perry. Many were disappointed with Perry’s sudden departure, but were comforted by the fact that he was in good care. The story also evoked sweet memories of Perry. Some students even requested to share their stories of him in our paper! Seeing the story’s success, Ashley came to me and said sincerely, “You are right! It’s a good story.” Her words brought me a great sense of fulfillment. Indeed, true stories might not always draw attention, but they have the power to touch and connect.
