Kristin Kimball, a travel writer, drove from New York studio to Pennsylvania to write about a young sustainable farmer she’d heard of. When she arrived at the farm, the farmer said he was too busy to be interviewed, even though they had previously scheduled it.
“Instead,” Kimball remembers,“ he handed me a garden tool and said, ‘There’s the vegetable land.’ That was the first time that I actually did any farm work, and yet when I started doing the work, I was shocked at how viscerally I responded.”
“And something happened that day. I just fell in love with the work.” she adds. “I think that human beings are in some way born to be farmers. This is what most people in the history of the world have focused their energy on.”
In a way, Kristin Kimball was lucky. When she decided to move to a farm in upstate New York, she had no idea what she was getting into. Seven years after her life-changing move from Manhattan to Essex Farm, Kimball has documented her adjustment to rural living in her new book, The Dirty Life. The title of her book, Kimball says, comes from the fact that farm work is consistently dirty. “I had no idea you could be dirty in so many different ways,” she says. “There’s dirt. There’s blood. There’s sweat. There’s your own sweat, and the sweat of the animals.”
In spite of the constant hard work, Kimball’s farm still has its quiet, romantic moments. The first year she planted potatoes, the yield (收获) was enormous — around 10,000 pounds. Friends were called to help. “It was truly fall,” Kimball writes:
The air was still cold at noon despite the bright sun. We boiled potatoes in their skins in the field, and served them steaming in napkins (餐巾纸). We all warmed our chilled fingers on them, popped them open, invested them with quantities of butter and salt. If there is a more perfect way to celebrate the potato’s earthy, sustaining essence (本质), I have not discovered it yet.
4. Which of the following can best describe Kimball’s path to farming?
A. Well-planned. B. Interest-based. C. Unexpectedly-taken. D. Curiosity-driven.
5. What does the underlined word “viscerally” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Naturally. B. Patiently. C. Passively. D. Hesitantly.
6. Why did Kimball write the book?
A. To share the joy of harvest. B. To promote the benefits of farming.
C To record her adaptation to country life. D. To introduce the farming skills she learned.
7. What does Kimball intend to express in the last paragraph?
A. The happiness in cooking potatoes. B. The satisfaction gained from farm life.
C. The significance of teamwork in farming. D. The challenges of farming in cold weather.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. C 7. B

Urbanization continues to reshape cities globally, bringing about increased convenience for citizens as well as a range of challenges, particularly regarding parking.
Traditional parking such as vast surface lots and multi-story garages face great challenges for their inefficiencies and inability to scale effectively with increased vehicles. People in big cities frequently experience stress and delays due to insufficient parking. Research suggests that drivers in big cities often spend an additional 20-30 minutes circling blocks in search of open space, ultimately worsening traffic jams.
Cities are adopting technology-driven solutions and sustainable practices to address these parking issues. The smart parking systems make use of the potential of sensors, apps, and data analysis to maximize parking space usage. These systems allow drivers to quickly locate available parking. Also the introduction of mobile applications and the Internet of Things (IoT) fundamentally transformed urban parking. Parking apps offer features like booking and payment integration, further streamlining (使……流畅) the parking experience.
Cities are experimenting with integrating various transportation modes into a cohesive network. Options such as shared bicycle programs and improved public transit systems allow people to shift from car dependency, thereby lessening the strain on parking issues.
Meanwhile, widespread autonomous vehicle usage is anticipated to revolutionize (彻底改变) parking further. Compared with private cars which are parked more than 90% of the time in a day, autonomous vehicles can operate nearly continuously to serve more people, reducing individual car ownership, so the corresponding demand for urban parking may decline.
Looking ahead, the evolution of urban parking appears promising as urban transportation continues to evolve. Modern planning strategies aim to reduce parking space with more integrated, multifunctional designs such as vertical (垂直的) and adaptable parking solutions and help reclaim valuable urban space for parks, housing, and other vital city functions.
8. The author mentions “20-30 minutes circling blocks” to show ________.
A the lack of time management skills B. the low efficiency of current parking modes
C. the failure of urban traffic control measures D. the necessity of stricter parking regulations
9. How do smart parking systems help locate available parking?
A. By expanding parking capacity. B. By using sensor- based parking apps.
C. By providing mobile payment options. D. By designing multifunctional buildings.
10. Why does the writer mention autonomous vehicles?
A. To predict their future market share. B. To highlight their advanced technology.
C. To argue their popularity over traditional cars. D. To show their potential as effective alternatives.
11. What can be inferred about the future of urban parking?
A. It will cause shortage and conflict. B. It will integrate technology with art.
C. It will prioritize public interest and flexibility. D. It will balance adaptability with sustainability.

Tristan Yates has no doubt about her first memory. “I was about three and a half,” she remembers,“ just running around with my twin sister trying to pick up Easter eggs.” But she has zero memories before that, which is typical. Is that because we don’t make memories when we’ re babies, or is there something else responsible? Now, a new research published by Yates and her colleagues in the journal Science suggests babies are able to form memories, even if they become accessible later in life.
To shed light on the issue, one of the best ways is to look deep in the brain with an fMRI machine, which requires a person to remain still for an extended period of time, but babies don’t understand instructions and have short attention spans. Therefore, the team had to adapt and come up with diverse tricks to keep them happy and engaged.
Here’s how this experiment went down. The babies viewed an image they have never seen before for two seconds, like a canyon or a dog toy. About a minute later, researchers showed them one image they had just seen alongside a different image from the same category. That could be the canyon, say, alongside a waterfall. If the baby remembered seeing the canyon earlier, the child would look longer at the canyon than at the waterfall. This procedure gave the researchers an indication as to which images the baby remembered, and which they forgot.
Meanwhile, the fMRI was shooting pictures of the baby’s brain, including its hippocampus (海马体), a region important for memory. The scans revealed that starting at about 12 months of age, the more activity there was in the baby’s hippocampus when seeing an image for the first time, the more likely they were to remember that image later.
“What we can conclude is that the hippocampus can encode (编码) individual memories, even in human infants. It’s evidence that a memory has formed in the baby’s hippocampus.” says Yates. These results allow scientists to put the time stamp of our first memory a little bit earlier than when we thought possible.
12. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By quotation an article. B. By defining a concept.
C. By giving an example. D. By providing a finding.
13. What did researchers do to test babies’ memory?
A. They asked babies to describe images. B. They scanned babies’ brains during sleep.
C. They presented toys to babies repeatedly. D. They compared babies’ image-viewing time.
14. What does the research show?
A. babies prefer seeing new images. B. Active brains lead to good memory.
C. Hippocampus functions after age 3. D. Memory loss occurs more over time.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Mystery of Infant Memories. B. Unlocking the Brain’s Secrets.
C. The Science of Early Childhood. D. fMRI: A Window into Infant Mind
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. A

【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Now, a new research published by Yates and her colleagues in the journal Science suggests babies are able to form memories, even if they become accessible later in life.(现在,耶茨和她的同事在《科学》杂志上发表的一项新研究表明,婴儿能够形成记忆,即使这些记忆在后来的生活中才会被唤起。)”以及下文对研究过程和结果的介绍可知,文章主要围绕婴儿记忆这一谜团展开,所以“婴儿记忆的奥秘”概括了本文的主题,适合作为本文标题。故选A项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Most of us have been sold a false choice: either chase your dreams with persistent ambition or find peace by accepting what you already have. We torture (折磨) ourselves with this impossible decision — achievement or contentment — as if they’re completely opposite. ____16____ Here are three practical approaches worth trying to build this balanced mindset.
Focus on internal rewards.
External recognition gives a quick hit of satisfaction, but it fades fast. Internal rewards, however, are different. Mastering a skill or contributing to something meaningful brings a kind of fulfillment. ____17____ So it would be a good choice if you identify activities that truly energize you, not just momentarily pleased, such as writing, cooking, or helping others learn.
____18____
Contentment lies only in the present moment. Building present-moment awareness lets you find it, no matter what’s going on. The warmth of sunlight and the taste of your coffee can be the source of your satisfaction. You don’t need any ceremonial practices. ____19____ Then you’ll get the best of both worlds: you’ re moving forward but also enjoying where you are.
Celebrate progress, not just end results.
Progress milestones offer hundreds of chances to feel proud along the way. If you only celebrate at the finish line, you miss out on all those moments. ____20____ For example, you can cheer yourself for finishing a chapter instead of waiting for the whole book to be published. You can also treat yourself to a favorite meal after each big project phase. These habits transform goals into satisfying steps and make your journey rewarding.
A. Practice mindful presence.
B. Seek the source of contentment.
C. But that’s not how real life works.
D. Such feeling doesn’t rely on outside approval.
E. In fact, they can coexist to build a fulfilling life.
F. Just bring your full attention to ordinary things around.
G. Recognizing small wins boosts motivation and wellbeing.
【答案】16. E 17. D 18. A 19. F 20. G

【16题详解】
前文“We torture (折磨) ourselves with this impossible decision — achievement or contentment — as if they’re completely opposite. (我们折磨自己,做出这个不可能的决定——成就还是满足——就好像它们是完全相反的。)”指出人们错误地将成就与满足感视为对立关系,后文“Here are three practical approaches worth trying to build this balanced mindset.(这里有三种值得尝试的建立这种平衡心态的方法。)”提出要建立平衡心态。由此可知,空处应否定前文的错误认知并引出后文观点。E项“事实上,它们可以共存并构建充实人生”符合语境,故选E。
【17题详解】
前文“Internal rewards, however, are different. Mastering a skill or contributing to something meaningful brings a kind of fulfillment.(然而,内在的奖励是不同的。掌握一项技能或为有意义的事情做出贡献会带来一种满足感。)”强调内在回报带来的持久满足感,后文“So it would be a good choice if you identify activities that truly energize you, not just momentarily pleased, such as writing, cooking, or helping others learn.(因此,如果你能找到那些真正让你充满活力的活动,而不是仅仅让你暂时感到高兴的活动,比如写作、烹饪或帮助他人学习,这将是一个很好的选择。)”举例说明应选择真正激励自己的活动。空处需承接上文,进一步解释内在回报的特点。D项“这种感受不依赖外界认可”与“external recognition fades fast”形成对比,符合内在回报的定义,故选D。
【18题详解】
后文“Contentment lies only in the present moment. Building present- moment awareness lets you find it, no matter what’s going on. The warmth of sunlight and the taste of your coffee can be the source of your satisfaction. You don’t need any ceremonial practices.(满足只存在于当下。建立当下意识,无论发生什么,你都能找到满足。阳光温暖和咖啡的味道可以成为你满足感的来源。你任何仪式性的行为。)”具体描述如何通过感知当下(如阳光、咖啡)获得满足。空处应为段落标题。A项“练习正念存在感”适合作本段标题,其中“Practice mindful presence”直接概括段落核心,且与后文“present-moment awareness”呼应,故选A。
【19题详解】
前文提到“You don’t need any ceremonial practices.(你不需要任何仪式化练习)”不需要任何仪式化练习,后文“Then you’ll get the best of both worlds: you’ re moving forward but also enjoying where you are.(这样你就能两全其美:你既能前进,也能享受当下。)”总结正念带来的双重好处。空处应承接“如何简单实践正念”。F项“只需全神贯注于周围平凡事物”与“sunlight/coffee”的举例完美衔接,故选F。
【20题详解】
由本段主旨“Celebrate progress, not just end results.(庆祝过程而非仅结果)”可知,本段主要强调要重视过程而非结果,后文“For example, you can cheer yourself for finishing a chapter instead of waiting for the whole book to be published. You can also treat yourself to a favorite meal after each big project phase. These habits transform goals into satisfying steps and make your journey rewarding.(例如,你可以为自己完成一章而加油,而不是等待整本书出版。你也可以在每个大项目阶段后奖励自己一顿美餐。这些习惯目标转化为令人满意的步骤,让您的旅程充满回报。)”举例说明阶段性奖励(如完成章节后庆祝)。空处需总结庆祝进步的意义。G项“认可小胜利能提升动力与幸福感”与“hundreds of chances to feel proud”形成因果逻辑,故选G。

Ever since my dad passed away, my life changed. My Mom was always busy with work, leaving little time for me. Every day after school, I had to go to daycare until she finished her work. Even Sundays were no exception.
One day, at dinner time, I asked Mom, “Can we please go to the food festival this Sunday?” I begged.
“I’m sorry, Lilly. I have to work,” she replied.
“But we never spend time together anymore. Can’t you take the day off?” I begged.
Mom placed a plate of freshly baked cherry pie in front of me and kissed my head. “We’ll see,” she said with a slight smile.
On Sunday morning, I heard the rhythmic chop (切) of fruit and the sound of blender (搅拌机) as if Mom was making something special in the kitchen. When I rushed to the kitchen, I was surprised to see Mom, in her work clothes, busy preparing some food. My heart sank. “You’re going to work again?” I asked tentatively (试探性地). Mom bent down next to me and put her hand on my shoulder, “Sorry, Lilly I have to go today.”
Tears streamed down my face as I yelled, “You never have time for me anymore.” Overwhelmed with disappointment, I ran to my room and slammed the door. As I was crying on my bed I could hear Mom talk on the phone, “Hi, Betty. I have work today and Lily is in a bad mood. I was wondering if you could come over and watch her for a few hours? … Great… Thanks so much. See you soon.”
A few hours later, my aunt Betty came over and Mom left. I heard Betty knock on my bedroom door. “Lilly, your Mom left a note for you on the kitchen table.”

Back from work, Mom prepared the mini food festival as promised.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Curious, I opened the door and hurried to the kitchen. There, on the table lay a note beside my favourite cherry pie. The note read: “Dear Lily, I’m sorry I can’t be with you today. But tonight, we’ll have our own mini food festival at home. Love, Mom.” Aunt Betty patted my shoulder and said, “Your mom has been preparing this since dawn.” My anger melted into guilt as I realized how hard Mom worked to provide for us. I spent the afternoon helping Aunt Betty decorate the living room with colorful paper and fairy lights, eagerly awaiting Mom’s return.
Back from work, Mom prepared the mini food festival as promised. To my surprise, she had brought back ingredients to make snacks, just like those at the real festival. As we cooked together, I felt the warmth I hadn’t experienced in a long time. After dinner, Mom turned off the lights, the room sparkling under the fairy lights. “It’s our special festival,” she said, hugging me tightly. In that moment, I understood that love isn’t measured by time but by effort. Though life had been tough since Dad’s passing, Mom’s small gestures reminded me that she was always there for me.

C. To record her adaptation to country life. D. To introduce the farming skills she learned.
7. What does Kimball intend to express in the last paragraph?
A. The happiness in cooking potatoes. B. The satisfaction gained from farm life.
C. The significance of teamwork in farming. D. The challenges of farming in cold weather.
C
D

C But that’s not how real life works.
D. Such feeling doesn’t rely on outside approval.
E. In fact, they can coexist to build a fulfilling life.
F. Just bring your full attention to ordinary things around.
G. Recognizing small wins boosts motivation and wellbeing.
