第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
There are as many different types of sleeper as there are animal varieties on the planet. Some sleeping strategies are based on protection, others on environment or even their particular characteristics. Some are just plain odd. Let’s take a look at those amazing creatures.
Dozing dolphins
Dolphins face a bit of a problem as they spend their whole lives in the water, but as mammals they need to breathe oxygen to survive. How do they juggle this when unconscious? dolphins shut down half of their brain, which rests, while the other half is alert (警觉的) and looking out for any potential dangers. As they do this, the dolphin will lie on the surface of the water in a behaviour known as ‘logging’.
Frogs
Frogs are incredible. They have managed to master practically every environment on the planet, no matter how hot or how cold. They not only use hibernation (冬眠) in winter as a sleep strategy, they also engage in something called estivation (夏眠), where they reach a resting state during the summer months to avoid overly hot or dry conditions. Aquatic(水栖的) frogs hibernate underwater, while frogs living in arctic conditions manage to survive by using glucose as anti-freeze which protects their internal organs from the cold as they enter into a form of suspended animation. Despite all this knowledge, scientists aren’t sure exactly how frogs sleep during the months when they are active.
Non-energetic elephants
Elephants only manage about two hours of sleep per day, and that’s not even a concentrated block of shuteye. They tend to nod off for a few minutes at a time throughout the day. Possibly because of this, most of their sleeping is done standing up, with just the occasional recumbent (卧着的) sleep. Interestingly, captive (圈养的) elephants, with no predators or poachers to worry about, sleep many hours more.
21. Why do dolphins “logging” on the surface of the water?
A. To enjoy the sunshine.
B. To look for potential food.
C. To breathe oxygen and guarantee safety.
D. To react to the environment.
22. What makes frogs incredible?
A. They are always in hibernation all the year round.
B. They use estivation as a strategy to deal with cold weather.
C. They don’t need sleep during months when they are active.
D. They can adjust their sleeping modes on the changing weather.
23. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A pet care guide. B. A travel guidebook.
C. A science magazine. D. A children’s educational book.
B
Growing up in Los Angeles’ Mid-City, Hannah Nides always admired the Mid-City Library’s building, a location she frequented with her mom. “For a while, the old TV in my room only had a DVD player. It didn’t connect to the Internet or have any channels,” she said. “So when I found there were actually a bunch of good DVDs here, I started coming here all the time.”
During her senior year at high school, Hannah reached out to Amy Wander, head of youth programming at the library. Soon, she spent her time at the library not just checking out DVDs but also helping Wander prepare for programs and organize materials to send to other library locations.“Hannah has been a true joy to work with,” Wander said. “Her ideas and enthusiasm were an inspiration and her imaginative contributions made our programs engaging and interactive. We wish her all the best in her future work.”
For Hannah, volunteering at the library allowed her to try on a career she’d always envisioned. “I’ve always had this dream of being a librarian, and it was really cool to actually see myself in that environment,” she said.
This fall, Hannah started her first semester at the University of New Orleans, where she’s high school, but a master’s degree in library studying music performance. She studied jazz during science isn’t off the table for her. “I’m hoping to find the time to keep volunteering at a library,” she said. “I don’t know where my life will take me, but Ill never stop loving and using libraries.”
To other youth, Hannah has a message about the library. “It’s so much cooler than you think. There’s this idea of libraries being a boring place where you’ll get shushed (发嘘声使某人安静) by the librarians and all you can do is just read books all day,” Hannah explained. “But you can also do crafts, do yoga, or play games. And I think many teens don’t realize that.”
24. What did Hannah’s experience with the good DVDs show?
A. Her enthusiasm for the old TV. B. Her initial attraction to the library.
C. Her mother’s successful parenting style. D. Her curiosity about the Internet in the library.
25. How did assisting Wander at the library influence Hannah?
A. She was able to study at university. B. She built up her collection of DVDs.
C. She explored a potential career path. D. She developed an interest in youth programs.
26. What is Hannah like according to the text?
A. Energetic and creative. B. Ambitious and honest.
C. Conservative and joyful. D. Sensitive and determined.
27. What does Hannah imply in the last paragraph?
A. Libraries are being misunderstood. B. Librarians are friendlier than expected.
C. Libraries are breaking their regulations. D. Many teens think libraries are out of date.

For years, experts in climate science and ecology have held up the agricultural practices of the ancient Maya as primary examples of what not to do. “There’s an explanation that describes the Maya as people who devoted themselves to unchecked agricultural development,” said Andrew Scherer, a professor at Brown University. “The explanation goes: The population grew too large, the agriculture expanded, and then everything fell apart.”
But a new study, led by Scherer, suggests that that explanation doesn’t tell the full story.
Using a remote sensing technology, the team surveyed an area in the western Maya lowlands. The results revealed extensive systems of complex irrigation (灌溉) and terracing (阶梯状坡地) in and outside the region’s towns, but no huge population increases to match. The findings indicated that between 350 and 900 AD, some Maya kingdoms were living comfortably, with no proven food insecurity, which convinced the researchers the previous explanation doesn’t translate across the whole of the Maya region.
When the team set about the survey, they didn’t attempt to bring the limitations of the long-held assumptions about Mayan agricultural practices to light. Rather, their primary motivation was to learn more about the infrastructure (基础设施) of regions that are unknown, owing to the thick forest that has long hidden ancient communities from view. Therefore, the team chose to survey three Maya sites: Piedras Negras, La Mar and Sak Tz’i.
The survey revealed signs of what the researchers call “agricultural intensification”—the adjustment of land to increase the volume and predictability of crop productivity. Agricultural intensification methods in these Maya kingdoms included building terraces and creating water management systems, suggesting that these kingdoms were not only prepared for population growth but also likely harvested much more food than they could consume every year.
Scherer said he hopes the study provides researchers with a different view of the ancient Maya. And perhaps it even offers inspiration to the modern-day agricultural field where people are looking for sustainable ways to grow food for an ever-growing global population.
28. What was the early explanation for Maya’s agricultural practice?
A. The Maya had very advanced agricultural techniques.
B. The Maya’s agriculture had no impact on their society.
C. The uncontrolled agricultural model led to Maya’s collapse.
D. The Maya’s agriculture was sustainable and supported a large population.
29. Which is not a conclusion of Scherer’s study?
A. The ancient Maya utilized complex irrigation and terracing techniques.
B. The ancient Maya faced food shortage due to a dramatic rise in population.
C Certain Maya kingdoms led a content life without evidence of food scarcity.
D. The ancient Maya modified their land to enhance crop yields and reliability.
30. Why did Scherer’s team conduct the survey?
A. They wanted to translate the old explanation across Maya.
B. They were mainly interested in the agricultural practices of the Maya.
C. They wanted to explore the unknown infrastructure hidden by the forest.
D. They were looking for sustainable agricultural methods for modern use.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Maya farming aimed to support a growing population.
B. Technology is crucial for understanding ancient farming.
C. Maya farming provides inspiration for modern-day agricultural field.
D. Maya farming was more sustainable and advanced than previously thought.

Pilots and air safety officials started paying close attention to airplanes that strike wildlife in 2009 after a US Airways jet Hudson with 155 people on board hit a flock of Canada geese and lost power as it climbed out of New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration had been collecting data on wildlife strikes since 1990 and U.S. Department of Agriculture wildlife biologists had been involved since 1995. But after that disaster in New York in 2009, data began to pour in about animal strikes, said Michael Begier, national coordinator for the USDA’s Airport Wildlife Hazards Program. Reports jumped immediately in 2009, Begier said, and continued to rise every year until a drop in air travel in 2020 during the pandemic. Much of the data came from better reporting by pilots, tower personnel, mechanics and others, he said. Most of those collisions occurred at smaller general-aviation airports, which mostly serve private aircraft, said Richard Dolbeer, science adviser to the USDAA’s Airport Wildlife Hazards Program. That’s because passenger airports started beefing up existing perimeter fencing (周边围栏) after the Sept.11,2001 attacks, both to keep out deer and to fence out terrorists.
Then which animals cause the most damage? Unsurprisingly, the largest birds and mammals cause the most damage to aircraft. Using the wildlife strike database, Dolbeer said, “for every 100-gram increase in animal weight, the likelihood of damage increases by 1.2%. What’s more, birds that flock, such as gulls and Canada geese, also tend to do more damage, adding the mass of a group.”
To prevent wildlife strikes, the FAA has put $30 million into research into radar and scanner systems to help detect birds in the path of aircraft, according to Begier and Dolbeer, along with other ideas that could help future pilots avoid collisions with wildlife. The radar systems are not widely in use yet, confined mainly to military airfields. There’s also been research into modifying lights on aircraft that would help birds detect oncoming planes and avoid them, they said, and into using drones to detect, monitor and drive away potential harm.
32. What can we learn about the data on wildlife strikes?
A. They reveal that no collisions occurred at passenger airports.
B. They show a decrease starting in 2009 and a jump in 2020.
C. They are primarily based on reports from relevant airport staff.
D. They suggest that general-aviation airports are safer than passenger airports.
33. What does the underlined word “beef up” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Switch. B. Strengthen. C. Replace. D. Build.
34. What can be inferred according to Dolbeer?
A. A great deal of money has been invested in training pilots.
B. Heavier animals are more likely to collide with aircraft.
C. Detection of birds and their active avoidance count to collision prevention.
D. For military reasons, radar systems and scanner systems are not widely used.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Most Dangerous Animals In the Air.
B. Wildlife Strikes: A Growing Concern for Pilots.
C. Preventing Wildlife Strikes: Efforts and Innovation.
D. Time to Improve the Safety of General-Aviation Airports.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a terribly hot day in August and I was in the middle of a busy move to a new apartment, and everything seemed to be going wrong.
The movers were late by several hours, and when they finally arrived, they impolitely informed me that some of my valuable furniture had been damaged during transportation. I was already impatient due to the heat and the stress of the move, and the news was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Tears welling up in my eyes, I surveyed my beloved dresser and sofa.
As I was beaten by helplessness and about to lose all hope, a neighbor from the apartment across the hall, named Mark, appeared. He smiled at me friendly and greeted me. To my surprise, he noticed my trouble and immediately offered to help. I was doubtful at first, not wanting to cause trouble for a stranger with my tough problems. But Mark was persistent (执着的). He calmly checked the damaged furniture and helped me communicate with the movers. His arguments made the movers realize their responsibility, and they agreed to pay for the damage.
Later, Mark even offered to help with the follow-up tasks. However, my troubles weren’t over yet. When we sat down in my new apartment, tired and hoping for some relief, we discovered that the air conditioning was broken. A call to the repair service showed that they wouldn’t come in hours. The heat inside the apartment was unbearable. I could feel sweat running down my back all the time.
Mark, seeing my discomfort, went to his own apartment and brought over a couple of fans. But as we were setting them up, one of the fans short-circuited (短路) and caused a power failure in the entire building, darkness surrounding us, the silence was only broken by the sound of my breathing. Worry and embarrassment set in. How could we survive the night without power in this strong heat? I felt like the universe was making fun of me on this already difficult day.
注意:
1.续写的短文词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Just as I thought things couldn’t get worse, Mark took out an emergency kit.

【原文】M: A new video game that includes a brave cat is popular with cat lovers. Some of them are using the game to raise money for real cats. The game called “Stray” was released last month. A stray animal is one without a home. Gamers are playing “Stray” live for audiences to raise money for animal shelters and other cat-connected organizations.
Livestreaming game play for charity is not new. But the quick popularity of “Stray” is a bit unusual. It was the fourth most watched game on the day it was first shown on Twitch, the video game streaming site. The game is available on many online game platforms. Steam monitor SteamDB said “Stray” has been the No.1 purchased game for the past two weeks.
“About 80 percent of the game’s creative team are cat owners and cat lovers,” the game’s producers said.
I certainly hope that maybe some people will be inspired to help actual stray animals in real life,” said Swann Martin-Raget. He is a game producer of “Stray”.
Jeff Legaspi is a marketing director of Annapurna Interactive, the game’s creator. He said that he hopes the game will “make more people aware of adopting a pet rather than shopping for a new one”.

【答案】21. C 22. D 23. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了海豚、青蛙和大象三种动物奇特的睡眠方式及其背后的原因。
【21题详解】
细节理解题。根据Dozing dolphins部分中“Dolphins face a bit of a problem as they spend their whole lives in the water, but as mammals they need to breathe oxygen to survive. How do they juggle this when unconscious? dolphins shut down half of their brain, which rests, while the other half is alert (警觉的) and looking out for any potential dangers. As they do this, the dolphin will lie on the surface of the water in a behaviour known as ‘logging’.(海豚在水中度过一生,面临着一些问题,但作为哺乳动物,它们需要呼吸氧气才能生存。当它们失去意识时,它们是如何做到这一点的呢?海豚会关闭一半的大脑进行休息,而另一半则保持警觉,留意任何潜在的危险。当它们这样做的时候,海豚会躺在水面上,这种行为被称为“漂浮”)”可知,海豚在水面上“漂浮”是为了呼吸氧气和保证安全。故选C。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据Frogs部分中“Frogs are incredible. They have managed to master practically every environment on the planet, no matter how hot or how cold. They not only use hibernation (冬眠) in winter as a sleep strategy, they also engage in something called estivation (夏眠), where they reach a resting state during the summer months to avoid overly hot or dry conditions. (青蛙令人难以置信。它们几乎已经掌握了地球上所有的环境,无论多么炎热或寒冷。它们不仅在冬天采用冬眠作为睡眠策略,还会进行一种叫做夏眠的活动,即在夏季达到休息状态,以避免过热或干燥的环境)”可知,青蛙令人难以置信是因为它们可以根据天气的变化调整自己的睡眠模式。故选D。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“There are as many different types of sleeper as there are animal varieties on the planet. Some sleeping strategies are based on protection, others on environment or even their particular characteristics.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. A 27. A

C. Certain Maya kingdoms led a content life without evidence of food scarcity.
31 What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Maya farming aimed to support a growing population.
B. Technology is crucial for understanding ancient farming.
C. Maya farming provides inspiration for modern-day agricultural field.
D. Maya farming was more sustainable and advanced than previously thought.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31. D
根据第一段“There’s an explanation that describes the Maya as people who devoted themselves to unchecked agricultural development(有一种解释将玛雅人描述为致力于不受限制的农业发展的人)”和“The explanation goes: The population grew too large, the agriculture expanded, and then everything fell apart.(解释是:人口增长过快,农业扩张,然后一切都崩溃了。)”可知,对玛雅农业实践的早期解释是不受控制的农业模式导致了玛雅的崩溃。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The findings indicated that between 350 and 900 AD, some Maya kingdoms were living comfortably, with no proven food insecurity, which convinced the researchers the previous explanation doesn’t translate across the whole of the Maya region.(研究结果表明,在公元350年至900年间,部分玛雅王国生活富足,并无确凿的食物短缺证据,这使研究人员确信,之前的解释并不能涵盖整个玛雅地区的情况。)”可知,“由于人口的急剧增长,古代玛雅人面临着食物短缺的问题”这一点不是Scherer的研究的结论。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Rather, their primary motivation was to learn more about the infrastructure (基础设施) of regions that are unknown, owing to the thick forest that has long hidden ancient communities from view.(相反,他们的主要动机是深入了解那些因茂密森林长期遮蔽而鲜为人知的地区的基础设施情况。)”可知,Scherer的团队进行这个调查是因为他们想探索隐藏在森林中的未知基础设施。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第三段“Using a remote sensing technology, the team surveyed an area in the western Maya lowlands. The results revealed extensive systems of complex irrigation (灌溉) and terracing (阶梯状坡地) in and outside the region’s towns, but no huge population increases to match. The findings indicated that between 350 and 900 AD, some Maya kingdoms were living comfortably, with no proven food insecurity, which convinced the researchers the previous explanation doesn’t translate across the whole of the Maya region.(研究团队运用遥感技术,对玛雅西部低地的一片区域进行了勘测。 。故选D。

【答案】32. C 33. B 34. C 35. C

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Speaking up for yourself and others doesn’t come naturally. ____36____ Luckily, you can feel more at ease when standing up for yourself and others.
Stop feeling guilty. Speaking up for yourself. When you say “no” to someone, don’t focus on what you said no to, but instead think about what you said yes to. For example, if you refused to let your friend borrow your car because they are too lazy to find a job, don’t think about how guilty you feel for saying no. ____37____
You can also practice your body language skills to enhance assertiveness(自信). There are a few stances(站立姿势) called power poses that convey confidence and authority when speaking. Practice your power pose while looking in the mirror before entering a situation where you may need to speak up. Stand like a superhero with your feet wide and firmly planted and your fists at your hips. ____38____ Try these poses for a few minutes each day and see if you feel a difference in your confidence.
____39____ The key is to use the proper language. You can get your point across effectively without coming across as aggressive, which increases your chances of being taken seriously. Instead of blaming someone by saying,“ You always do this” or “You need to stop doing this,” try using “I” language instead. ____40____
A. Practice speaking up in front of a mirror.
B. Lift your chin and channel your inner strength.
C. You can be assertive without being argumentative.
D. Use “I” language to express your feelings and thoughts.
E. Most often, it has to be worked on and the skills must be refined over time.
F. By focusing on you, the person you are speaking with may not feel attacked.
G. Rather, think about how you are helping your friend by not just giving them something.

第二节(满分25分)

【答案】One possible version:
Para 1: Just as I thought things couldn’t get worse, Mark took out an emergency kit. Without hesitation, he grabbed a screwdriver and flashlight, then headed straight for the circuiter. “I used to work as an electrician,” he explained as he expertly examined the wiring. Within minutes, he located the faulty connection and fixed it with steady hands. Watching his skillful movements lifted the weight of helplessness I’d felt. As he flipped the switch, lights flooded the apartment again, and the remaining fan whirred to life. We high-fived each other, cheering, “We did it!”.
Para 2: Seeing light shedding on his sweating face, I was determined to thank his help. “Mark, I don’t know how to repay you,” I said sincerely. He waved it off, replying, “Just pass it forward someday.” Grateful, I insisted on cooking him dinner the next day. As we sat in the light, sharing my carefully prepared food and recalling the chaotic day, I realized that even the worst days could unlock unexpected acts of goodwill, binding strangers into chosen family and I became hopeful about my new beginning.
