Unit 8 Once Upon a Time 作文素材 The Chinese farmer who lost his horse(塞翁失马) Once, there was a Chinese farmer who lived near the border(边境). One day, his horse ran away. His neighbors felt sorry for him, but he just said, "Maybe it's not so bad." The next day, his horse came back with seven other horses. The neighbors said he was lucky, but he still said, "Maybe." Then, his son rode the new horse. He fell off and broke his leg. Neighbors thought it was a pity, but the farmer said,"Maybe." Later, the army came to take young men away. Because of his broken leg, the son didn't have to go. Neighbors said he was lucky again. The farmer still said,"Maybe." This story tells us that good things and bad things can change. We never know what will happen next. Painting the Eyes of the Dragon(画龙点睛) Once upon a time, there was a famous painter in China. One day, he was asked to paint four dragons on the wall of a temple. The painter worked very hard. Soon, the four dragons on the wall looked so real. They seemed to fly in the sky! Everyone who saw the dragons said they were beautiful. But there was one strange thing—the painter didn’t paint the eyes of the dragons. People asked him, “Why don’t you paint the eyes?” The painter smiled and said, “If I paint the eyes, the dragons will fly away.” No one believed him. They thought he just didn’t want to finish the job. So, the painter decided to paint the eyes on two of the dragons. As soon as he finished painting the eyes, something amazing happened! The two dragons suddenly came to life. With a big noise, they flew up into the sky and disappeared in the clouds. Everyone was shocked. They finally knew the painter was right. From then on, people use “Painting the Eyes of the Dragon” to tell others that adding the most important part can make things perfect. The Fisherman and the Golden Fish (农夫与金鱼) Long ago, a poor fisherman and his wife lived in a tiny hut by the sea. One day, when the fisherman fished, he caught a golden fish. The fish begged, “Let me go! I’ll give you anything you want.” The fisherman was kind and set it free. When he told his wife, she got mad. “You should have asked for something! Our old trough (水槽)is broken. Go back and ask for a new one!” So the fisherman went to the sea and called the fish. The fish gave him a new trough. But his wife wasn’t happy. “I want a big house!” she shouted. The fisherman had to ask the fish again. And they got a house. Then, his wife wanted to be a queen. The fisherman felt bad, but he asked the fish. His wife became a queen. Later, she wanted to control the sea. When the fisherman told the fish, it didn’t say a word and swam away. When the fisherman went home, everything was back to normal. They lived in the small hut again, with the broken trough. His wife finally knew: being too greedy makes you lose everything. The Lion and the Mouse 狮子和老鼠 One day, a little mouse ran across a sleeping lion’s paw.The lion woke up and felt angry. He put his huge paw on the mouse and said, “I’m hungry. I’ll eat you!” The mouse was scared but cried out, “Please, Mr. Lion! Let me go! One day, I might help you.” The lion laughed. “How can a little mouse help a strong lion like me? But I’m not too hungry now, so I’ll let you go.” A few days later, the lion got caught in a hunter’s net. He tried to break free but couldn’t. He roared loudly, feeling hopeless. The little mouse heard the lion’s roar. Remembering the lion’s mercy(曾经对它的仁慈), she ran to help. She used her sharp teeth to bite the net ropes. Bit by bit, she made holes in the net. Finally, the lion got out. “Thank you, little mouse!” he said. “I was wrong. Even small friends can be very helpful!” From then on, the lion and the mouse became good friends. This story teaches us: No matter how small someone is, they can still do big things to help others. The Three Little Pigs My favourite story is The Three Little Pigs. Let me tell you the story. Once upon a time, Mum asked her three little pigs to build their own houses. The first pig was lazy and built his house with straw. The second pig used wood to build his house. The third pig spent a lot of time working hard and built his house with bricks. One day, a wolf came. He was hungry and broke the first two houses easily. But he couldn't break the brick house. In the end, he had to give up and leave. From the story we know that it's important for us to try our best to do things well. We shouldn't be lazy. The Emperor’s New Clothes Once upon a time, there was an emperor who loved new clothes more than anything. One day, two cheats said they could make magic clothes—only clever people could see them, and stupid ones couldn’t. The emperor gave them gold and silk. The cheats just pretended to work and kept everything for themselves. When others checked, no one wanted to look stupid, so they all said the clothes were beautiful. On the parade day, the “dressed” emperor walked naked through the city. Everyone praised the clothes until a little boy shouted, “The emperor has no clothes on!” Then people realized the truth. This story teaches us an important lesson: We should be brave enough to tell the truth, even if others are saying something different. Don’t be afraid of looking foolish, because honesty is always the best choice. The Ugly Duckling Once upon a time, a mother duck’s eggs hatched. One little duckling looked different. He was big, gray, and ugly. The other ducks laughed at him. Even his own family didn’t like him. So, the poor duckling left home. During his journey, he faced many difficulties. He was chased by dogs and had to sleep in cold places. But he never gave up. Spring came, and the duckling grew up. One day, he saw his reflection in the water. He wasn’t an ugly duckling anymore—he was a beautiful white swan! This story tells us a wonderful lesson. Don’t be sad if others make fun of you. Everyone grows and changes. Just believe in yourself and stay strong. One day, your hard work and patience will pay off, and you’ll shine brightly. Yu Gong Moves the Mountains There are many great heroes and meaningful folk stories in traditional Chinese culture.Among all of the stories, I like Yu Gong Moves the Mountains best. Once upon a time, there was an old man called Yu Gong. There were two high mountains near his house. Because of the two high mountains, it was difficult for the villagers to go out. Yu Gong decided to move the mountains with his family. One day, when Yu Gong and his family moved the mountains, an old man laughed at him and told them not to do it anymore. But Yu Gong and his family kept on working. They worked hard day and night, without taking a break. In the end, a god heard about this and was moved by Yu Gong’s spirit. He sent another two gods to help take the mountains away. I like this story because it tells us that as long as we never give up, anything is possible. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
