As a middle school adviser, I know firsthand how unkind kids can be to each other — but today, I saw something that reminded me just how friendly they really are.
It was “College Day” at our school, when students wear gear from colleges and universities, which were designed according to their height and weight. And we focus on the importance of pursuing education after high school. At lunch, we hosted a fun question-and-answer activity with buzzers (蜂鸣抢答器), prizes, and questions about education funds, on-the-job training programs, and post-secondary options. Six students came up at a time to play.
During one round, two of the students who participated were from our specialized classroom. These students are amazing — strong-minded, determined, and full of heart. As the game began, I got ready to step in if they needed support or if they felt left out.
The first question went to one of the general education students. Then, on the second question, Frank, one of our students from the specialized class, rang in first. Before I could even help, a few classmates quietly came up behind him and whispered the answer in his ear. He repeated it with excitement, and when I announced it was correct, the crowd erupted in cheers — louder than I’d heard all day.
It happened again with the next question. This time, the crowd began cheering Frank’s name, and he lit up with pride. More students from the class were invited up to play, and the cheering only grew louder. The whole room was filled with delight — students supporting one another, showing joy, unity, and genuine kindness.
We often talk about the challenges this generation faces, but I saw something powerful today. These kids are good. They’re tender-hearted. They lift each other up. And in that moment, they reminded me that the future is in very good hands.
4. What does the word “gear” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Caps. B. Glasses. C. watches. D. Uniforms.
5. What did the author do at the beginning of the game?
A. He prepared to ring the buzzer first.
B. He announced the answer instantly.
C He planned to assist students in need.
D. He left students behind without hesitation.
6. What made Frank proud?
A. His kindness to others. B. Peers’ praise and shouts.
C His confidence in himself. D. Peers’ support and cheers.
7. What message does the text convey about the kids?
A. They are ambitious. B. They are stressful.
C. They are hopeful. D. They are grateful.
C
In high school, you have to take a lot of required courses, but you typically have some degree of choice. Your choices are often put into two broad categories. You have science, technology, engineering, and mathematics coursework in one, and arts and social studies in another. However, are art and science really that different?
There are certainly key differences between doing science and making art. The goal of science is to create new understanding of how the world works and develop practical solutions that address challenges, such as climate change. Artists attempt to call up a sense of beauty or an emotional reaction through their work — whether it’s in dance, music, painting, or other art form. Science is designed to be objective and guided by data; art is subjective and deeply influenced by feelings and opinions.
While the outcomes of science and art are quite different, the processes involved have certain similarities. There are plenty of real-life examples showing that people can be interested in both art and science — you don’t have to choose one over the other. Perhaps the best known Western historical figure who was both artist and scientist is Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci is famous for his paintings, particularly the Mona Lisa. But he was also known in many science and engineering fields; he dreamed up inventions far ahead of his time, including the parachute and calculator (计算器).
Sometimes scientific discovery can best be understood by drawing artful comparisons. For example Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity is sometimes poetically explained in a way that stimulates feelings: When sitting with someone you like, an hour is like a minute, but if you touch a hot stove (炉子), a minute is like an hour.
All of this leads back to you and your choices and views of the arts and sciences. The process of inventing ourselves involves complex decisions, just as creating a new theory or composing a musical masterpiece does. How you’ll apply originality to decision-making will be up to you
8. What does para 2 mainly tell us about science and art?
A. Their major differences. B. Their different goals.
C. Their general functions. D. Their close relations.
9. What does the author mean by mentioning Da Vinci?
A. Science and art have much in common. B. Everyone can develop in all sides.
C. One can be good at both art and science. D. It’s crucial to make correct choices.
10. What does the explanation of Einstein’s theory suggest?
A. Einstein’s theory of relativity is actually easy to learn.
B. All scientific discoveries can be explained by comparison.
C. Science can be more understandable by comparing artfully.
D. Drawing artful comparisons is the best way to explain science.
11. What’s the author’s opinion about science and art?
A. Science is more useful than art.
B. They are different but related.
C. Science can’t be understood without art.
D. They have more similarities than differences.
D
Richard Corsi, principal of the University of California, Davis College of Engineering, will present results from his team’s recent DIY air filtration (过滤) studies today at the American Chemical Society Spring 2025 Digital Meeting.
The media didn’t pay much attention to indoor air quality, and then the COVID - 19 hit and suddenly there was this remarkable opportunity to educate the public about the issue. “That’s when we came up with the idea of a low - cost, effective air cleaner that people can build themselves,” Corsi explains. He hoped to reach as many people as possible who couldn’t put down hundreds of dollars for a HEPA air filter.
The DIY solution, called the Corsi - Rosenthal (CR) Box, was co - designed with filtration specialist Jim Rosenthal. The CR Box comprises four air filters commonly used in heating, ventilation (通风) , and air conditioning (HVAC); a cardboard base; and a box fan to draw air through the filters and toward the top of the room. Because the components are relatively inexpensive, the CR Box is a small part of the cost of a HEPA air filter.
The CR Box filters performed as well or better than comparable HEPA filters. The DIY system was also more effective at clearing particles (颗粒) 1-3 micrometers in size than those 0.35-1 micrometers. To understand the size, typical smoke particles are smaller than 1 micrometer, while dust and flower powder are 0.5-3 micrometers.
Although the CR Boxes’ effectiveness decreased over time, they still performed better than new and more expensive HEPA air filters for the larger particle size and performed competitiveness with HEPA for smaller particles over the extended study period.
On a more personal note, he appreciates the sense of empowerment CR Boxs give people. “One thing that’s been so satisfying to me is the number of people who’ve told me that they get such great personal satisfaction out of knowing that they’re building something that’s helping them and their families or their students,” he says.
12. What did Corsi’ s team focus on?
A. affordable DIY air cleaners. B. Public education issues.
C. Becoming a public hit. D. Saving a lot of money.
13. What’s the advantage of the CR Box compared to HEAP filters?
A. Having a small size. B. Clearing large particles.
C. Having a long service life. D. Clearing indoor air quickly.
14. Why does the author mention HEPA filters in paragraph 5?
A. To offer alternatives to people. B. To display HEPA filters’ function.
C. To make an introduction to customers. D. To prove the CR Box’s excellence.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. DIY Box Filter Improves indoor Air Quality
B. The CR Box Filter Will Soon Replace the HEPA Filter
C. A New Air Cleaner Enters Thousands of Households
D. Let’s Learn to Make Our Houses Cleaner

It was summertime, and I was at my friend Evie’s house. I remember it was a bright yet foggy morning, and Evie and I were setting up a board game. Then, out of nowhere, Evie’s mom’s phone started ringing like an old- fashioned telephone. She picked it up and said hello. Evie and I stopped what we were doing to listen and see what was going on. Her mother’s face was weary but kind, with a gentle smile. However, after a minute or two, she became more alert (警觉的) and worried. We could tell something really terrible had happened.
When she turned and looked at me with the same expression, I started to get worried. I knew something was really wrong; I just didn’t know what. Then she handed me the phone with a shaky hand.
“Hello?” I asked with growing concern.
“Hey, sweetheart,” Dad said. “Mom had to go to the hospital. The doctors say she had a stroke (中风).”
I was in such shock from what had happened. Time froze, and the world was silent except for Dad’s voice. “You’re probably going to be spending some time with your grandma,” he continued. At that moment, I felt my whole life structure begin collapsing under my feet, like a rock that was quickly falling apart. I knew my life was never going to be the same again. I just kept thinking about my mom and how much I wished I had been there with her. I regretted going to the sleepover (过夜) at Evie’s house.
With a heavy heart, I hurried to hospital at once. All I wanted to do was see my mom, but the hospital she was in wouldn’t allow kids my age into the Emergency Bay. Before long, grandma came to the hospital and took me to her home.

During the first few days at Grandma’s house, I worried about Mom so much.

We often talk about the challenges this generation faces but I saw something powerful today.
C. He planned to assist students in need.
D. He left students behind without hesitation.
6. What made Frank proud?
A. His kindness to others. B. Peers’ praise and shouts.
C. His confidence in himself. D. Peers’ support and cheers.
7. What message does the text convey about the kids?
A. They are ambitious. B. They are stressful.
C. They are hopeful. D. They are grateful.
D 5. C 6. D 7.

For example, Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity is sometimes poetically explained in a way that stimulates feelings: When sitting with someone you like, an hour is like a minute, but if you touch a hot stove (炉子), a minute is like an hour.
A 9. C 10. C 11. B

根据第二段“There are certainly key differences between doing science and making art.(科学研究与艺术创作之间确实存在关键差异)”和第三段首句“While the outcomes of science and art are quite different, the processes involved have certain similarities.(尽管科学和艺术的结果差异很大,但涉及的过程有一定相似性)”可知,作者认为科学与艺术“不同但相关”。故选B项。

C To make an introduction to customers. D. To prove the CR Box’s excellence.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. DIY Box Filter Improves indoor Air Quality
B. The CR Box Filter Will Soon Replace the HEPA Filter
C. A New Air Cleaner Enters Thousands of Households
D. Let’s Learn to Make Our Houses Cleaner
A 13. B 14. D 15. A

本句已有谓语动词has been,所以name应该用非谓语动词形式,name与名词a tiny village之间是被动关系,应用过去分词作后置定语,修饰a tiny village。
故填which/that。
故填to cover。
故填the。
be hired by为固定短语,表示“被……雇佣”,所以空处应用介词by。故填by。

My Most Admired Hero
In the Anti-Japanese War, Qiu Shaoyun remains my most admired hero. In October 1952, during a covert operation near Wonsan, an enemy incendiary bomb landed beside him, setting his camouflage uniform and surrounding grass ablaze. Though the flames engulfed his body, he clenched his teeth and lay motionless for over 30 minutes—afraid even the slightest twitch would reveal the platoon’s position. At just 26, he sacrificed his life to safeguard the mission’s success.
Qiu’s extraordinary self-discipline and willingness to prioritize the collective over personal survival are deeply moving. His silent endurance embodies the revolutionary spirit of unwavering loyalty, proving that true heroism lies in sacrificing one’s all for the nation’s future. His story continues to ignite patriotism in every generation.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

During the first few days at Grandma’s house, I worried about Mom so much. Every morning, I would wake up early, eager for any news about her condition. Grandma tried her best to comfort me, telling me that Mom was getting the best care possible. But the uncertainty gnawed at me, making it hard to eat or sleep. I spent hours on the phone with Dad, asking for updates and expressing my fears. Despite Grandma’s gentle reassurances, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of helplessness and anxiety that consumed me.
Under the guidance of Grandma, I decided to learn to care for myself. She taught me how to cook simple meals, do my laundry, and manage my time wisely. Grandma emphasized the importance of staying positive and keeping busy, so I started to read more books and even took up drawing again, something I had loved as a child. Slowly but surely, I began to feel a sense of independence and control over my life. Although I still missed Mom terribly, I knew that taking care of myself was one way I could support her and our family during this difficult time.
