Matt may have found his calling related to birds. He used to make puppets and is now a farming officer in Yorkshire, England. Matt drew a lot of attention over the weekend when he went into nature dressed as a giant bird.
It wasn’t just any bird, but a 10-foot-long costume of the Eurasian curlew (白腰杓鹬), a large wading bird in Europe known for its long, thin beak and decreasing population. Over the weekend, Matt walked 53 miles (about 85 kilometers) along the Nidderdale Way to raise awareness about the curlew’s decline.
Matt affectionately called the costume “Cathy the Curlew”. It was made out of polystyrene (聚苯乙烯) and bamboo. This unique challenge began on April 19, which is before World Curlew Day on April 21, which was created in 2017 to inform people about habitat loss, land-use changes, and climate change affecting the curlew.
For Matt, this was as much an art project as it was a conservation effort. The journey took about two days. He started at Pateley Bridge on Saturday and finished at Brimham Rocks on Sunday. Along the way, news coverage and Matt’s talks with people he met helped spread the message to protect the curlew.
The area where Matt hiked was once a main habitat for the curlews, but their population has significantly declined over the years. In 2015, the bird was added to the UK Red List for birds, indicating the highest conservation concern.
“I’m really worried about the curlew,” Matt said. “Every nest, chick, and egg matters. We need around 10,000 more curlews each year to reach a sustainable (可持续的) population,” he added. “Curlews need to successfully raise one chick (雏鸟) every two years, but they usually don’t manage that from the four eggs they lay each year. One chick every two years is what we need to have a sustainable population, but we are far from that goal.”
4. Why did Matt choose to dress as a Eurasian curlew?
A. To warn the public of the species’ decline. B. To promote puppet-making skills.
C. To get people to know about curlews. D. To celebrate World Curlew Day.
5. How did Matt’s hike contribute to raising people’s awareness of curlews?
A. By calling on volunteers to hike with him. B. By selling curlew costumes.
C. Through activities held by news media. D. Through media reports and communication.
6. What can be inferred about the area where Matt hiked?
A. Few curlews live there now. B. There used to be a large curlew population.
C The habitat there is completely destroyed. D. It experienced a massive increase in curlews.
7. What do Matt’s words in the last paragraph mean?
A. The curlew population is sustainable. B. The curlew population increases slowly.
C. Curlews should lay more eggs each year. D. Curlews are important for the ecosystem.

When children learn a musical instrument, one of the hardest things for a parent to do is encourage them to practice. But here’s something parents can use to give their kids a reason to try: A study has found that playing a musical instrument may lead to better brain health in later life. That might not be enough to encourage a child who has better things to do, but it’s good news for those who enjoy music.
Researchers from the UK looked at data from an online survey of more than 1,000 people over the age of 40 who had been asked to talk about their musical experiences and exposure (暴露)to music during their lives. They were also given tasks that tested their memory and skills in things like planning and focusing.
The study found that playing a musical instrument, especially the piano, was connected with better memory and thinking skills. And continuing to play an instrument into later life was found to have an even more salutary effect. Singing was related to better brain health in older age too. The research team suggested that the social factors that came with singing in a singing group may also have had an effect.
One of the researchers, Anne Corbett, who is a professor of dementia (痴呆)research at the University of Exeter, said that encouraging older adults to return to music later in life could be a useful public health strategy. She said, “There is much evidence for the benefit of music group activities for individuals with dementia.” And she suggested that such activities could be used to reduce the risk of developing dementia.
Of those who took part in the survey, 89% said they had played a musical instrument at some time in their lives, and about half still played one. Around seven out of ten said they had taken part in group singing.
8. Which is a benefit children learning musical instruments get according to the text?
A. Becoming famous. B. Getting courage to try new things.
C. Encouraging them to do things well. D. Having better brain health in later life.
9. What does the underlined word “salutary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Typical. B. Absolute. C. Positive. D. Sufficient.
10. According to Anne, how could music benefit older adults?
A. It encourages them to sing more. B. It lowers the chance of developing dementia.
C. It provides a relaxing mind in their free time. D. It helps them stay physically active.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To explain the importance of a hobby. B. To describe that singing is good for health.
C. To tell us what we should do in daily life. D. To encourage people to join in music activities.
D
If you’re reading this in bed on your phone, you’re not alone. Many people use their phones before and after bedtime, especially young adults and teens. Still, you might want to stop soon. Using screens before bed or in bed is believed to disrupt sleep, although the exact reasons are not completely clear.
In a new study, researchers looked into this issue by using data from a large survey of 45,202 university students in Norway. They found that using screens in bed is linked to a 59 percent higher chance of insomnia (失眠) and can result in 24 minutes less sleep each night.
“Sleep problems are very common among students and have serious effects on mental health, school performance, and overall well-being,” says Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland, a clinical psychologist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. “Because so many people use screens in bed, we wanted to see how different screen activities affect sleep. We thought social media might be worse for sleep because it is interactive (互动的) and can motivate (激发) emotions.”
However, the study found that using social media is no worse for sleep than other screen activities. The type of screen activity doesn’t matter as much as the total time spent using screens in bed. The researchers found no significant differences between social media and other screen activities. This suggests that using screens in general is the main cause of sleep problems, likely because it takes up time that could be used for resting.
“If you have trouble sleeping and think screen time might be a cause, try to reduce the use of screen in bed, and stop using screens at least 30 to 60 minutes before sleep,” says Hjetland. “If you use screens, consider turning off notifications (通知) to reduce disruptions during the night.”
12. How does the author begin the argument?
A. By listing different opinions. B. By referring to scientific data.
C. By mentioning a common act. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
13. Why did researchers initially guess social media could affect sleep more?
A. It contained violent content. B. It included emotional inspiration.
C It was entirely used by students. D. It required frequent physical interaction.
14. Which is the practical advice Hjetland provides?
A. Avoiding using screen for a while before bed. B. Reading e-books instead of social media.
C. Increasing daytime physical activity. D. Stopping using screens after supper.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Screen Time in Bed May Increase Sleeplessness
B Good Sleep Is Key to Students’ Performance
C. Social Media Has the Worst Effect on Mental Health
D. Reading on Phones Is Common Among Teens and Young Adults

The holiday season brings out acts of kindness and generosity, and for the team at East Idaho News, it’s a time to go above and beyond through their Secret Santa initiative.
Each year, East Idaho News partners with a faceless donor to deliver life-changing gifts to worthy residents across the community. With careful consideration, they select individuals who have faced significant hardships or who tirelessly give to others. These holiday surprises are more than just gifts; they’re a way of spreading hope, showing appreciation, and lifting burdens from people who often put their own needs last.
Recently, a hardworking grandmother named Hope received a holiday surprise that was nothing short of incredible.
Hope has spent nearly 13 years working at a fast food restaurant, committed to long hours and early mornings to support her family. Her daughter, also a single mother, often works long, so Hope steps in to ensure her grandchildren are cared for each day. Living modestly, Hope always focuses on her family’s needs, making every effort to provide safety, comfort and care for her grandchildren, who are the center of her world. Despite her demanding job, Hope plays an active role in her grandchildren’s lives, balancing school pickups, after-school activities, and everyday missions. Beyond these responsibilities, she has a creative passion — making native American quilts. She works on these quilts in her limited free time, often gifting them to friends and family, symbolizing her love and cultural pride.
For Hope, getting around town has been an ongoing struggle due to continuous car troubles. After finally saving enough for a vehicle, her joy was short-lived when her second hand car was destroyed in an accident not long after she bought it. Determined, she bought another car, only to have it sideswiped, making it unusable. Since then, Hope has shared her daughter’s car, sometimes walking long distances to pick it up for tasks and work.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hope’s life took a wonderful turn when East Idaho News staff showed up at her workplace.

C. The habitat there is completely destroyed. D. It experienced a massive increase in curlews.
7. What do Matt’s words in the last paragraph mean?
A. The curlew population is sustainable. B. The curlew population increases slowly.
C. Curlews should lay more eggs each year. D. Curlews are important for the ecosystem.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. B

Of those who took part in the survey 89% said they had played a musical instrument at some time in their lives, and about half still played one. Around seven out of ten said they had taken part in group singing.

C. It was entirely used by students.
B. Good Sleep Is Key to Students’ Performance

【答案】
Hope’s life took a wonderful turn when East Idaho News staff showed up at her workplace. Holding a steaming coffee pot, Hope stood still with shock as cameras and smiling faces surrounded her. The kitchen’s usual noise faded when the reporter announced, “Someone wants to give you a reliable car” Her rough hands trembled, covering her mouth as tears slid down her face. Behind her, coworkers burst into cheers while the camera captured her whispering “Thank you” repeatedly. Keys pressed into her hand, she seated herself into a chair, laughing through tears at the shiny blue SUV parked outside. “This means morning school runs without walks in the snow,” she choked out, hugging a Secret Santa team member tightly.
Many people were moved by Hope’s story, flooding the comments with heartfelt reactions. “Her selflessness reshapes me,” wrote a teacher, while a young mother commented, “This restored my faith in goodness.” Viewers noticed how Hope kept smoothing her uniform during the interview, as if grounding herself in reality. Some shared how their grandparents did the same tirelessly. The video’s closing shot of Hope’s grandchildren cheering in the new car became a symbol of community compassion. As donations poured in for her quilt materials, one viewer summarized, “Her light shines brighter because she first lit it in darkness.”
