A few years back, I was leaving the animal shelter where I worked only to find a baby goat at the end of the driveway. The shelter’s owners are known animal rescuers, and I figured someone had dropped him over the fence. The kid was visibly nervous but stood perfectly still as I approached.
I’m an animal lover and I’ve brought home dogs, cats, horses, and chickens, but never a goat. The tiny kid was too adorable to resist. I named him Rocky, and with the help of some experienced friends, bottle-fed him in my bathroom.
Rocky proved to be quite intelligent. When he was about a week old, I knocked on the bathroom floor and said “lie down”. I was astonished when he dropped down. I was even more amazed when he did it three times in a row.
A quick study Rocky learned to lie down, bow, and turn in a circle in no time. He is house-trained, jumps in the back of my car when I say “load up”, and spends the day wandering with my dogs, whom he considers his fellow group. He knows the name of everything I feed him, and even joins us for trips to the dog park.
I love to train animals and often take my dogs to shows where they can perform their tricks. Rocky did his first show when he was just six weeks old. He knew only a few tricks then, but he did them perfectly and never misbehaved or got nervous in front of the crowd.
Now he has a whole inventory (清单): he’ll come when called, walk on a string, wave, smile for the camera (“Say cheese”), and more. Rocky and my dogs perform regularly at schools, nursing homes, and charity events. Rocky can even “read” his tricks off cards, which always earns the most applause.
It’s hard to believe that the baby goat nobody wanted turned out to be one of the smartest and most good-natured animals I’ve ever had. He’s by far the sharpest of my bunch — just don’t tell the dogs!
4. How did the author acquire Rocky?
A. He bought him from a pet store.
B. He received him from a shelter owner.
C. He saw him inside the shelter building.
D. He found him abandoned near his workplace.
5. What first demonstrated Rocky’s intelligence at one week old?
A. Playing with the narrator’s dogs.
B. Jumping into the car on command.
C. Recognizing different foods by name.
D. Obeying the “lie down” command repeatedly.
6. What does Rocky’s view of the dogs as “his fellow group” imply?
A. He sees them as his protective family group.
B. He increasingly dominates the dogs.
C. He competes with them for food.
D. He fears them and avoids interaction.
7. Which receives “the most applause” during performances?
A. Smiling for the camera.
B Waving at the audience.
C. Walking perfectly on a string.
D. Performing tricks by reading cards.

Even if you don’t worry that artificial intelligence (AI) will destroy the human race, you might concern that its fearsome appetite for electricity will destroy the environment. Asking ChatGPT a question means using ten times more energy than an old-fashioned search inquiry. Google’s greenhouse-gas emissions (排放) rose by nearly half between 2019 and 2023, as the AI boom took off; Microsoft’s have been up by almost 30% since 2020. With huge investments in new data centres planned, more rises seem to happen. But the spread of such pessimistic sentiments (悲观情绪) is inappropriate. In absolute terms, AI may be less energy-hungry than many people assume. Better still, AI can help remove carbon from the industries that have proved hardest to clean up.
Consider AI’s appetite for energy first. The International Energy Agency (IEA) thinks that electricity consumption by data centres could as much as triple (三倍) in the next five years. Even if energy usage soars, though, the base is still low. Data centres today account for about 1.5% of the world’s electricity consumption — and the vast majority of that is due to streaming, social media and online shopping, not AI.
Moreover, some of AI’s electricity use will help with greening the economy. As we explain in this week’s Science & Technology section, AI excels at identifying complex patterns, processing giant data sets and upgrading systems, all of which can help reduce emissions. AI is already helping improve the efficiency of electrical networks, cut fuel use in shipping and spot otherwise invisible leaks of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
The task for policymakers and industry bosses is to maximize such benefits while minimizing the climate impacts. The most elegant solution would be for governments to impose a proper price on carbon and leave the market to do its work.
8. What is the author’s main argument regarding AI’s energy consumption?
A. Governments must immediately stop AI development.
B AI will cause environmental disaster to the human race.
C. Current concerns about AI’s energy impact are overstated.
D. Streaming services and social media pose greater threats than AI.
9. What does the underlined word “soars” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Increase s quickly. B. Looks normal.
C. Falls sharply. D. Comes easily.
10. How does AI help to reduce emissions?
A. By shutting down high- pollution factories.
B. By developing new carbon capture technologies.
C. By completely replacing traditional energy sources.
D. By conducting AI-powered data and system operations.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Data Centre: Powering the Future
B. Google and Microsoft’s Carbon Crisis
C. AI: Energy Consumer or Climate Rescuer
D. AI: Environmental Threat or Economic Booster
D
Around 1745, Chinese emperor and poet Qianlong was sailing on the Yangtze River toward Zhenjiang when he encountered a breathtaking sight: a group of Yangtze finless porpoises (海豚) emerged from the water’s surface. He wrote a poem about it. “Porpoises chased moonlight on silvered tides, as dragons summoned storm-clouds loom in sight.”
Almost 300 years later, scientists wanted to chart the historical range of this critically endangered animal, so they searched hundreds of ancient Chinese poems to seek mentions of it, hoping to map its historical distribution (分布) and thus better understand threats to this species. The Yangtze finless porpoises, the world’s only freshwater porpoises, are found in China’s Yangtze River. About 1,250 individuals are left in the wild.
“Having access to past data allows us to detect when declines began and relate those changes to potential threats like habitat destruction, climate change, overhunting, disease or the introduction of invasive species,” says Yaoyao Zhang, an ecologist at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Zhang and her team turned to ancient poems because official records rarely mentioned these animals. “Using an online database of Chinese literature, we searched for various historical names of the Yangtze finless porpoise across dynamic poetry, confirming each mention to ensure it referred to the porpoise and not other animals,” Zhang says.
The research, published on Monday in Current Biology, revealed 724 poems that mentioned the porpoises. Half contained information about where they were seen. This window into the past revealed that the porpoises’ range has decreased by around 65 percent over 1,400 years, with a rapid decline in the past century. Poems from the distant past mentioned these animals living in tributaries (支流) and lakes along the Yangtze, but in more recent poems, these references dramatically decreased.
This study builds on previous examples of using historical texts to understand species distributions and human-caused biodiversity losses. Next, the research team plans to further analyze the collected poems for more information about the past environment and porpoise groups.
12. Why did scientists study ancient Chinese poems?
A. To analyze Qianlong’s poetry about natural phenomena.
B. To track historical distribution of Yangtze finless porpoises.
C. To prove ancient poems are more reliable than official records.
D. To promote public awareness of freshwater species conservation.
13. What is special about Yangtze finless porpoises?
A. They were first documented in Chinese ancient poetry.
B. They are the only freshwater porpoises in the world.
C. They began to drop in number 1,400 years ago.
D. They can survive in both rivers and seawater.
14. How did researchers ensure the accuracy of porpoise references in poems?
A. By focusing on poems only from the Qing Dynasty.
B. By comparing poetry records with modern sightings.
C. By checking historical names and dropping other animals.
D. By working together with literature experts worldwide.
15. What does the research on ancient poems show?
A. The number of Yangtze finless porpoises is increasing.
B. The range of porpoises has decreased significantly.
C. Climate change caused the most rapid decline.
D. Official records contained more location data.

How to Avoid Meaningless Social Interactions
In today’s world, we often find ourselves trapped in tiring social circles that are using up our energy. Learning to identify and avoid meaningless interactions is crucial for mental well-being. Here are some practical strategies.
____16____ Before attending any social event, ask yourself: “Does this agree with my values?” or “Will this help me grow?” If you’re attending just out of obligation (义务), it’s likely an unworthy commitment. Psychologists suggest that 70% of social tiredness comes from activities we didn’t genuinely want to join.
Quality Over Quantity. Having hundreds of so-called friends doesn’t equal true connection. ____17____ A Cambridge University study shows that people with 3-5 deep friendships report higher life satisfaction than those with dozens of so- called ones. Invest time in relationships that inspire growth each other.
Master the Art of saying No. The fear of missing out often pushes us into unwanted gatherings. ____18____ Politely declining invitations with simple statements like “I have other priorities” is perfectly acceptable. Remember, every “yes” to others is a “no” to yourself.
Digital Detoxification (数字排毒). Social media creates fantasy of obligation. ____19____ Schedule specific time to check messages instead of responding immediately. Research indicates that limiting social media use to 30 minutes daily significantly reduces anxiety.
Embrace Staying alone. ____20____ Regular staying alone allows for self-reflection and recharging. Historical figures like Newton and Kefka produced their best work during periods of being alone. Start with short walks or coffee breaks alone to rediscover the joy of your own company.
A. Being alone doesn’t mean being lonely.
B. Practice setting boundaries without guilt.
C. Prioritize activities that bring personal fulfillment.
D. Evaluate the purpose of social engagement s beforehand.

I sat in a quiet corner in the classroom to read, escaping the bullying (欺凌) of Ronnie and his fellows. The peace was broken by Ronnie, whose bullying knew no bounds.
“Look at Shy Tim, hiding in the shadows again?” Ronnie laughed.
Upon hearing Ronnie’s voice, I attempted to press myself against the wall, as if trying to make myself smaller. Barely whispering, I replied, “I…I don’t want any trouble.” Laughter erupted around me. I longed to defend myself but felt afraid.
The bullying went beyond words. Ronnie seized every chance to embarrass me. He often took advantage of my fear of public speaking, putting me in situations where my fear would be obvious for all to see. Once, when the teacher asked for volunteers for a presentation, Ronnie intentionally suggested that I go first. My palms sweated and my mouth tightened. This made it difficult for me to speak fluently.
On another occasion, Ronnie decided to play a terrible joke on me. While I was hurriedly searching for my wallet in the classroom, Ronnie and his fellows held the wallet out of reach, asking “Looking for something, Shy Tim?” Before I could react, Ronnie ran away. In spite of my attempts to grab the wallet from his hand, I did not manage to do so. Eventually, Ronnie dropped the wallet on the ground and walked away, laughing at my embarrassment. Feeling really sad, I hid my face behind my hands in case my classmates saw me in this bad situation.
During a school camp, our relationship took a significant turn. While wandering around the campsite, I came across a diary lying on the ground. Picking it up, I realized it belonged to Ronnie upon examining its cover. Eagerly, I began going through its pages. As I read, I was struck by his entries. I came to learn of Ronnie’s challenges at home and his pressure to do well in school. This discovery completely changed my view of him. He was not as bad as I had thought.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
During the afternoon hike, Ronnie tripped over a hidden root and hurt his ankle.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At the campsite, Ronnie turned to me, “Thanks, Tim. I…I didn’t expect you to help me.”

A few years back, I was leaving the animal shelter where I worked only to find a baby goat at the end of the driveway. The shelter’s owners are known animal rescuers, and I figured someone had dropped him over the fence. The kid was visibly nervous but stood perfectly still as I approached.
I’m an animal lover and I’ve brought home dogs cats, horses, and chickens, but never a goat.
B. Waving at the audience.
C. Walking perfectly on a string.
D. Performing tricks by reading cards.
【答案】4. D 5. D 6. A 7. D

C
B. AI will cause environmental disaster to the human race.
C. Current concerns about AI’s energy impact are overstated.
D. Streaming services and social media pose greater threats than AI.
9. What does the underlined word “soars” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Increase s quickly. B. Looks normal.
C. Falls sharply. D. Comes easily.
10. How does AI help to reduce emissions?
A. By shutting down high- pollution factories.
B. By developing new carbon capture technologies.
C. By completely replacing traditional energy sources.
D. By conducting AI-powered data and system operations.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Data Centre: Powering the Future
B. Google and Microsoft’s Carbon Crisis
C. AI: Energy Consumer or Climate Rescuer
D. AI: Environmental Threat or Economic Booster
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“But the spread of such pessimistic sentiments (悲观情绪) is inappropriate. In absolute terms, AI may be less energy-hungry than many people assume. Better still, AI can help remove carbon from the industries that have proved hardest to clean up. (但此类悲观情绪的蔓延并不恰当。从绝对值来看,AI的能耗可能比人们想象的要低。更好的是,AI可以帮助那些被证明最难清理的行业消除碳排放。)”可知,作者认为不应悲观地预测AI的能源影响,而且AI具有环保潜力。由此可知,作者的观点是“对AI能源影响的当前担忧被夸大了”。故选C项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“The International Energy Agency (IEA) thinks that electricity consumption by data centres could as much as triple (三倍) in the next five years. (国际能源署(IEA)认为,数据中心的用电量在未来五年内可能会增加三倍。)”和下文“the base is still low (基数仍然很低)”可知,前后有让步关系,AI的能源消耗基数很小,画线词所表示的趋势应与前面提到的数据中心的电力消耗增加一致,画线词意思应该是“快速增加,猛涨”。故选A项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“As we explain in this week’s Science & Technology section, AI excels at identifying complex patterns, processing giant data sets and upgrading systems, all of which can help reduce emissions. (正如我们在本周的科学与技术部分所解释的那样,AI擅长识别复杂的模式、处理庞大的数据集和升级系统,所有这些都有助于减少排放。)”可知,AI驱动的数据与系统操作可以减少排放。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Even if you don’t worry that artificial intelligence (AI) will destroy the human race, you might concern that its fearsome appetite for electricity will destroy the environment. (即使你不担心人工智能(AI)会毁灭人类,你也可能会担心它对电力的可怕需求会破坏环境。)”和“Better still, AI can help remove carbon from the industries that have proved hardest to clean up. (更好的是,AI可以帮助那些被证明最难清理的行业消除碳排放。)”可知,文章先承认AI的能耗问题,但指出担忧被夸大,后强调AI在减排中的实际应用。因此,C项“AI:能源消耗者还是气候拯救者?”凸显了对AI能源影响的两种争论,最适合作为文章标题。故选C项。
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. C 15. B

E. Stop following accounts that cause negative comparisons.
F. Instead, focus on developing a few meaningful relationships.
G. Many online interactions are performative rather than genuine.
【答案】16. D 17. F 18. B 19. G 20. A

The Power of Cooperation
This picture shows several ants are marching in a neat line beneath a branch. The branch looks much bigger than their bodies. But with their concerted effort, they can carry it.
This scene powerfully illustrates how cooperation creates strength. Individually, ants appear small, but their unity allows them to tackle challenges far beyond their size. It mirrors human experiences: whether in workplaces or communities, collective effort often produces remarkable results. The ants’ orderly progress teaches us that shared goals and teamwork can turn even the tiniest contributions into meaningful achievements. True power, indeed, grows from collaboration.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
During the afternoon hike, Ronnie tripped over a hidden root and hurt his ankle. As he cried in pain, the group gathered around, unsure of what to do. Despite a few metres away, I immediately rushed forward to help him. “Are you okay, Ronnie?” I asked, examining the injured ankle. Ronnie, shocked by my kindness, said hesitantly, “I think so, but I can’t put any weight on it.” I offered Ronnie a shoulder to lean on, helping him to his feet as the others watched in astonishment. Together, we made our way back to the campsite, supporting Ronnie every step.
At the campsite, Ronnie turned to me, “Thanks, Tim. I... I didn’t expect you to help me.” “It’s no big deal, Ronnie. We’re classmates after all.” I responded. Upon hearing what I had said, Ronnie was deeply moved and grabbed my hands tightly. Surprised at this sudden turn of events, I managed a smile. Ronnie was ashamed that it had taken him such a long time to realise the impact of his actions. From then on, Ronnie began standing up for me whenever others tried to belittle me. Meanwhile, I regained my confidence, feeling more at ease in class and social activities. As my self-confidence grew, so did our friendship.
