Although many years have passed, I still remember the last year of my junior school. I had to prepare for the entrance test, which made me stressed (有压力的). I cried several nights.
When we are feeling very stressed, many of us may feel like crying. Shedding tears is a good way to deal with our “dark” emotions (情绪). When we cry, we are letting go of our stress, I certainly felt better after I had cried. After I had calmed myself down, I reached out to some friends and teachers who encouraged me. I managed to get an offer from a qualified senior school.
With increased competition, it isn’t surprising that many students today are feeling stressed out. Many of us think of our “dark” emotions to be our enemies (敌人). It appears silly for us to be so easily beaten by them. That’s why we might feel too shy to cry. When we are feeling sad, we may also have difficulty asking for help or talking to others.
“Dark” emotions are not in themselves a bad thing. Just like happiness, they are common. But you should certainly find ways to manage them. Try to take part in social events. Eat healthy, balanced meals. Find people who can support you. Exercise regularly. These things can all help. The most important thing, though, is to accept your feelings. They are nothing to be ashamed of.
4. Why did the writer cry when preparing the entrance test?
A. The time passed quickly. B. He felt worried.
C. He missed his junior school. D. He got little help.
5 How did the writer let go of stress?
A. By crying all the time. B. By reaching out to family.
C. By entering a qualified senior school. D. By asking friends and teachers for help.
6. Why are we too shy to cry when under stress?
A. We are not brave enough to ask for help.
B. We are not strong enough and look foolish.
C. We are not wise enough to hide our feelings.
D. We are not confident enough to talk to others.
7. What does the writer think of “Dark” emotions?
A. Silly. B. Useful. C. Natural. D. Unsatisfying.
C
“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medical journal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection (感染). Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be a result of a small decrease (减少) in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of humor on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality and may make a difference to the way people deal with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when feeling challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to deal with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Humor could positively impact people’s health.
B. Joyful women can live longer than happy men.
C. Women who hardly laugh may fall ill easily.
D. Humor makes people pay more attention to their health.
9. The reason for men having a higher risk of death from infection than women is that ________.
A. men have poor memories as they age.
B. men become less humorous as they grow older.
C. men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older.
D. men take part in fewer social activities as they age.
10. How does the author show the research findings?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments (论点). D. By making experiments.
11. Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with?
A. Humorless people have an unhappy childhood.
B. Children must learn to be humorous at an early age.
C. Humorous people can better deal with pressure in life.
D. Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education.
D
At the Game Awards (TGA) 2024, Black Myth: Wukong achieved several “breakthrough” in Chinese gaming history. This Chinese hit video game has taken the gaming world by storm, selling more than 10 million copies across all platforms in just three days after its release.
The game is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. In it, players take the role of the Destined One, setting off for adventures to collect six Relics that once belonged to Sun Wukong and challenge the Celestial Court.
Drawing on a rich heritage of nearly 1,000 years of Chinese culture, the game’s storyline and characters have proven difficult to understand for foreign players. For instance, a player shared on social media that their lack of familiarity with Journey to the West led to them consistently missing hidden treasures, finally resulting in repeated failures during a boss fight in Chapter 2. Meanwhile, some players feel overwhelmed by names like Erlang Shen and Lingxuzi, which can be difficult to pronounce for those unfamiliar with pinyin.
To bridge these cultural divides, one enthusiast wrote a 200-page outline detailing Sun Wukong’s abilities across all 100 chapters of Journey to the West. Many others immersed themselves in the story by checking out TV shows, anime and online forums.
Through this process, western players have not only improved their gaming skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for Sun Wukong and Journey to the West. “Although many people might compare Sun Wukong to Western superheroes, I believe they are different,” said Patrick from the US. “Sun Wukong has a carefree and independent nature, unlimited by the need to set a good example for others like Spider-Man, who by contrast follows principles like ’with great power comes great responsibility’.”
Journey to the West offers a comprehensive narrative that covers a very dangerous journey, numerous encounters and the exploration of various cultures, making it a rich source for diverse storytelling types and cultural backgrounds. Perhaps these are some of the key reasons why Journey to the West has been translated into over a dozen languages, with more than 60 versions available worldwide.
12. What is the Destined One in paragraph 2?
A. The fictional main character of the game.
B. The nickname of Sun Wukong in the game.
C. One of the adventures to collect the six Relics.
D. One of the six Relics belonging to the Celestial Court.
13. What does the underlined word “bridge” in paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Take control of. B. Get rid of.
C. Lose track of. D. Take advantage of.
14. What can be learned about the game from the passage?
A. It has gradually gained popularity among players worldwide.
B. Its original character Sun Wukong is similar to western superheroes.
C. It is hard for foreign players due to their unfamiliarity with Chinese culture.
D. It has been translated into many languages with numerous versions available worldwide.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A Chinese hit video game and its original novel Journey to the West.
B. Reasons behind the success of Chinese video game Black Myth: Wukong.
C. The benefits Black Myth: Wukong brings to the spread of Chinese culture.
D. The cultural impact and western players’ reception of a Chinese hit video game.

阅读表达
I always do voluntary work in the hospital. As a patient visitor, by providing companionship for patients in a sometimes lonely environment, I try my best to serve and help to relieve the loneliness and boredom patients may feel after staying in hospital for weeks or even months.
Every Saturday afternoon for three to four hours, with a list of patients who have requested a patient visitor service, I head up to the 5th, 6th or 7th floor to first visit my priority patients. At the nurse's station, I kindly ask the nurses or the medical staff about the condition of the patients on that unit and confirm that the patients would like a visitor. After receiving an update from the nurse, I gently knock on the door of the patients and enter with a friendly “Hello”. Then, I introduce myself and again politely ask if they would like a patient visitor. Before it,I usually try to prepare a few starting conversation topics such as the current news, sports scores and fun facts. However, the patients usually engage me first in an interesting conversation.
When volunteering as a patient visitor, I spent a lot of time communicating one-on-one with patients. Individual patients had individual needs and possessed extraordinary personal stories. Therefore, I found every visit fascinating. By talking, not only did I learn about the hospital settings and system, but I learned about the diverse life of others. The patients I visited were truly inspiring and I always admire them for their strength. Although difficult, they were often willing to share their stories of pain, suffering, hopes and optimism. I realize that I am truly grateful and honored that they would share their personal stories with just a volunteer like me.

Housework Really Matters
As a high school student we need to attach importance to labor education and a sense of responsibility.
Last weekend at home I took on various household chores such as sweeping the floor, washing the dishes, and doing the laundry, giving my parents some well-deserved rest. Unskillful as I was, I followed my parents' example, devoting myself to the work. Though exhausted, I benefited a lot from the experience.
Personally, I think helping out with the chores is both educational and rewarding. Not only have I learnt some basic life skills, but I have come to realize the significance of contributing to the family and appreciating my parents' daily hard work.
