In a generation dominated by digital screens and fast-paced content, the simple act of picking up a book is losing its essence. Fortunately, two Indian college students, Heet Doshi,20, and Om Thakkar, 19, both book enthusiasts who found themselves struggling to find like-minded people, decided to create a space where people could connect, share ideas, and form bonds over their love for books.
Thus, “Your Reading Circle” was born in September 2023, a space for passionate readers to gather and share books and stories. Then in early 2024, the co-founders came across the concept of mini-libraries in Perumkulam, a village in Kerala, where three public libraries were set up every few hundred metres to make reading accessible. Inspired by this, they thought of replicating the mode in Ahmedabad to encourage the city’s reading culture further.
However, the journey was not smooth. Initially, they had no idea how to get permission to set up libraries in public parks or where to gather books and find funds. But they were determined to bring the idea to life. Eventually, after dedicating a lot of time and efforts, they installed the first library at Parimal Garden. It was centrally located near colleges, drawing people from all age groups. The success of the first library motivated the two, and soon, more parks across Ahmedabad witnessed the arrival of mini-libraries.
These libraries are free and accessible to all, more than just places to borrow books. They have turned into centers for conversation, learning, and community-building.
The co-founders have noticed that the libraries are playing an important role in promoting the reading culture in parks and gardens. “People who previously spent their time glued to their phones are now picking up books and reading in the parks. I see at least 20 people near the libraries, browsing the books and engaging in discussions,” Heet observes.
The libraries have even caught the attention of people outside Ahmedabad. “Individuals from across India, as well as from places like Australia, Canada, and the US, have reached out to express their appreciation for the initiative,” he adds.
4. What does the underlined word “replicating” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Modelling on. B. Depending upon.
C. Researching into. D. Adjusting to.
5. What was a problem facing the co-founders at the start of the mini-libraries?
A. They lacked funding for their project.
B. They failed to attract like-minded people.
C. They couldn’t afford a space to store books.
D. They had no experience in organizing events.
6. How have the mini-libraries contributed to the community?
A. They have increased the park attendances.
B. They have taken the place of traditional schools.
C. They have transformed phone addicts into book lovers.
D. They have promoted the interaction and bonding among people.
7. Which of the following best describes the impact of the mini-libraries?
A. Short-lived. B. Predictable.
C. Far-reaching. D. Unidentifiable.
A 5. A 6. D 7. C

Mention the 1970s and most people will have an opinion. It will be mixed up with memories of strikes and power cuts in London. Go deeper and there were plenty of pubs and in a world where television was limited to three channels, and cinema chains that often changed their programs twice weekly.
Best of all, though, was live music. Every town had its established venue for touring bands but London enjoyed a number of smaller locations that hosted rock, folk or jazz acts several nights a week. Many of these were Irish owned or managed, and part of a tradition where providing live music was part and parcel of running a pub. In fact, there were an awful lot of bands and singers you could see on a regular basis within 25 miles of London. Even better, admission was free in many of the smaller venues.
The concentration of so much of this in such a small geographical area was a comparatively recent development, and can be traced to the impact the 1973 oil price rise had on the record industry.
Against the background of the strikes and power cuts that everyone experienced, would-be rock stars found that touring up and down the UK in a van and staying overnight in hotels suddenly became extremely expensive. It was hardly surprising that bands concentrated on venues closer to home to lower traveling and accommodation costs.
There were other factors at work too. It’s worth remembering that the London of the 1970s was a city with a constantly declining population. There were many empty houses as well as local authority flats that were “hard to let”. And commercial space too, which meant plenty of recording and rehearsing(排练) studios.
Forget the negative comments of the 1970s, the strikes and power cuts. We should celebrate the sounds that came out of the pubs half a century ago as part of our rich musical heritage.
8. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To recall the memories of London.
B. To show the unstable life in London.
C. To introduce the emergence of live music.
D. To reveal the severe situation of people’s life.
9. Why did many bands perform in venues closer to their homes?
A. To reach a larger audience.
B. To avoid strikes and power cuts.
C. To take advantage of free admission.
D. To reduce travel and accommodation costs.
10. What contributed to the concentration of live music venues in London?
A. The decline in commercial space.
B. The abundance of empty houses.
C. The popularity of television channels.
D. The lack of cheap accommodation.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The rise of London’s live music in the 1970s.
B. The history of the development of London.
C. The contributions London made to music.
D. The views of London in the 1970s.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第一段“Mention the 1970s and most people will have an opinion. It will be mixed up with memories of strikes and power cuts in London. Go deeper and there were plenty of pubs and in a world where television was limited to three channels, and cinema chains that often changed their programs twice weekly.
根据第四段“Against the background of the strikes and power cuts that everyone experienced, would-be rock stars found that touring up and down the UK in a van and staying overnight in hotels suddenly became extremely expensive. It was hardly surprising that bands concentrated on venues closer to home to lower traveling and accommodation costs. (在每个人都经历过罢工和停电的背景下,未来的摇滚明星们发现,开着面包车在英国各地巡回演出,并在酒店过夜,突然变得极其昂贵。乐队集中在离家更近的地方演出以降低旅行和住宿费用,这并不奇怪)”可知,乐队选择在离家更近的地方演出是为了降低旅行和住宿费用。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“There were other factors at work too. It’s worth remembering that the London of the 1970s was a city with a constantly declining population. There were many empty houses as well as local authority flats that were “hard to let”. And commercial space too, which meant plenty of recording and rehearsing(排练) studios.
根据全文内容,尤其是第二段中“Best of all, though, was live music. Every town had its established venue for touring bands but London enjoyed a number of smaller locations that hosted rock, folk or jazz acts several nights a week. Many of these were Irish owned or managed, and part of a tradition where providing live music was part and parcel of running a pub. (不过,最棒的还是现场音乐。每个城镇都有为巡回乐队设立的固定场地,但伦敦有许多较小的场地,每周有几个晚上举办摇滚、民谣或爵士演出。其中许多是由爱尔兰人拥有或管理的,这是提供现场音乐是经营酒吧的重要组成部分的传统的一部分)”和最后一段“Forget the negative comments of the 1970s, the strikes and power cuts. We should celebrate the sounds that came out of the pubs half a century ago as part of our rich musical heritage. (忘掉20世纪70年代的负面评论、罢工和停电吧。我们应该庆祝半个世纪前酒吧里传出的声音,这是我们丰富音乐遗产的一部分)”可知,文章主要讲述了20世纪70年代伦敦现场音乐的兴起,包括其背景、原因和影响。故选A。

You can talk to an AI chatbot about pretty much anything, from help with daily tasks to the problems you may need to solve. Its answers reflect the human data that taught it how to act like a person; but how human-like are the latest chatbots, really?
As people turn to AI chatbots for more of their Internet needs, and the bots get incorporated into more applications from shopping to health care, a team of researchers sought to understand how AI chatbots reproduce human empathy, which is the ability to understand and share another person’s feelings.
A study led by UC Santa Cruz Professor Magy Seif El-Nasr and Stanford University Researcher Mahnaz Roshanaei, explores how AI chatbots evaluate and perform empathy. To do so, the researchers asked both a group of humans and AI chatbots to read short stories of human positive and negative, and rate their empathy toward each story on a scale of 1 to 5, and compared the responses. The stories came from real human experiences, which were made completely anonymous (匿名的). They also had AI chatbots perform the same rating task after being informed about a set of features including gender, perspective, or similarity of experiences.
Overall, the researchers found that when it comes to offering an emotional response, AI chatbots are overly empathetic, particularly in response to sad stories. “They are very emotional in terms of negative feelings, and they try to be very nice,” Roshanaei said. “But when a person talks about very positive events happening to them, AI chatbots don’t seem to care.” This over-empathizing situation was also present when they are told that the person they were chatting to was a female. “It’s happening because the data comes from humans, and humans have biases toward other humans,” Roshanaei explained.
This acts as a warning that the technology is not quite ready to be used with sensitive populations such as teenagers, or those with mental health conditions. “This shows that even though AI is amazing, it still has a lot of big gaps in comparison to humans,” Roshanaei said.
12. Why did the researchers conduct the study?
A. To test the reliability of AI chatbots.
B. To explore the potential of AI chatbots.
C. To figure out how understanding AI chatbots are.
D. To compare the intelligence of AI chatbots and humans.
13. How may AI chatbots most likely respond to an uplifting story?
A. Express intense excitement.
B. Call the story’s realness into question.
C. Display minimal emotional engagement.
D. Ask follow-up questions about specific details.
14. What is Roshanaei’s attitude toward current AI technology?
A. Critical. B. Objective.
C. Optimistic. D. Unconcerned.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Emotional AI Begins to Catch on.
B. AI Chatbots Struggle with Empathy.
C. How AI Chatbots Reform Healthcare.
D. Why AI Chatbots Surpass Humans in Empathy.
C 13. C 14. B 15. B

根据文章最后一段中Roshanaei的话“This shows that even though AI is amazing, it still has a lot of big gaps in comparison to humans, (这表明,尽管人工智能令人惊叹,但与人类相比,它仍然存在很多巨大的差距。)”
因此,选项B“AI Chatbots Struggle with Empathy(AI聊天机器人在共情方面存在困难。)”

It started with a blank page.
Every Tuesday afternoon, in a small classroom behind the school library, students gathered for something called “Words Unspoken”. It was advertised as a poetry club, but it was more than that. It was run by Ms. Carter, the school counselor, who also happened to be a published poet. At first, no one really knew what to expect.
Samantha hadn’t planned on joining. She preferred staying invisible. She had been in low spirits ever since she didn’t do well in the exams. She had mastered silence. Words, especially spoken ones, felt powerless for her. But when Ms. Carter handed her a flyer with a gentle smile and said that there was no pressure and that it was just a space to write, something in her stirred (被唤起).
On the first day, there were only six students. Some were theater kids, and others looked like they belonged on the soccer field. Samantha almost turned around at the door, but Ms. Carter’s soft voice pulled her in. “We’re not here to be perfect,” she said. “We’re here to be honest.”
That first session, Ms. Carter asked them to write a poem beginning with the words “I am…”. Samantha stared at the page. Her hand trembled. After twenty minutes, all she had written was: “I am tired of pretending I’m okay.” She didn’t read it aloud, and she didn’t need to. Just writing it made her chest feel a little lighter.
Each week, the group explored different types of poetry—free verse, haiku and cinquain. They wrote about everything: the ache of being misunderstood, the quiet joy of a sunny morning, the happiness of being praised by the teachers and so on. There were no grades, no judgment—just pages and pens and voices finding their rhythm.
For Samantha, poetry therapy became a lifeline. She began to carry a small notebook everywhere. On the bus, she’d write about the way the clouds mirrored her thoughts. Slowly, the silence inside her began to change. Instead of feeling empty, it started to fill with words.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One Tuesday afternoon, Ms. Carter invited them to write a poem titled “The Person I’m Becoming”. A sense of excitement seized Samantha. She thought, “This time that I must write the poem as soon as possible, reading it aloud in front of my classmates.” In reality, what she was eager to become was a writer like Ms. Carter. Afterwards, she held her pen, beginning to write her own poem. Approximately 20 minutes later, Samantha completed the writing. Suddenly a bright light streamed through the window, flooding the opening and spreading in a wide circle on the ceiling, which seemed to inspire her. She jumped to her feet, and walked to Ms. Carter, asking politely, “Can I read my poem?” Ms. Carter nodded with a smile.
When Samantha finished reading, there was a burst of applause. It was the first time that she had been well recognized by the classmates. Moreover, Ms. Carter hugged her excitedly, saying, “Well done, my kid. I am glad you are becoming a writer. In the future you will become an outstanding writer.” Several years later, Samantha attained her dream. She owed her success to my Ms. Carter who is a beacon in her life on the road to writing.

A They have increased the park attendances.
B. They have taken the place of traditional schools.
C. They have transformed phone addicts into book lovers.
D. They have promoted the interaction and bonding among people.
7. Which of the following best describes the impact of the mini-libraries?

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
