Over 200,000 volumes are collected here, with many, of the texts printed between 1501 and 1800. Old Library of Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland) Old Library of Trinity College was founded in 1592. Appropriately named the Long Room, this space is located within the Old Library at Trinity College. Previously, the room’s ceiling was flat and only shelved books on the lower level. However, the college was granted a free copy of every book published in Britain and Ireland, requiring the expansion of the cavernous space. Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) In 1837, a group of 43 Portuguese immigrants and political refugees established the Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading to promote their culture in what was the Empire of Brazil. The library was designed by architect Rafael da Silva e Castro in a neo-Gothic style and was inspired by the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (Paris, France) The library at the Cite de l’architecture et du patrimoine opened its doors in September 2007. It’s a must visit for any architecture lover. Not only because of the amazing location in a Romanesque (罗马式的) sistine, but also because its entire collection is dedicated to works about architecture, and landscaping. The library also houses the largest collection of preserved romanesque wall paintings in France. 1. Which library has the longest history? A. Old Library of Trinity College. B. Library of Strahov Monastery. C. Cite de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine. D. Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading. 2. What is the purpose of the establishment of Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading? Which library attracts those interested in art and architecture most? A. Library of Strahov Monastery. B. Old Library of Trinity College. C. Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading. D. Cite de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine. B From the deserts of Southern California to the forests of Alaska, the U. S. possesses a diversity (多样性) of nature. For most of her life, Joy Ryan never saw the scenery beyond her home state of Ohio. Then, when she was in her mid-eighties, her grandson Brad Ryan decided to take her on a journey to all of the U. S. National Parks, which took eight years to complete. At the age of 93, Grandma Joy has finally seen all 63 parks, ending her journey in the National Park of American Samoa. “When I learned she had never seen the great wildernesses of America-deserts, mountains, oceans, I decided to intervene (干预) in some way,” Brad says. This idea inspired their first trip to the Great Smoky Mountains. However, once they were on the road, Brad realized that they could visit more parks that were nearby. Over the years, they managed to see all of the famous sights at Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, the Redwoods, and so on. But Brad values the time spent with his grandmother just as much as the amazing places they were able to visit. Despite Grandma Joy’s older age, she was able to hike mountains. Brad regards her love for life as the key to her good health. She is grateful for each new day and is always excited for the next journey. Finally, their long journey across the U.S. came to an end with American Samoa. “I am thankful every morning for giving me another day,” Grandma Joy shares. “And you’re your choice whether you’re going to have a rainy day or a sunny day. So, smile at everybody, and let everybody know you’re having a whale of a time.” While her tour of the U. S. has come to a close, she and her grandson are not done traveling. Next up, they have their sights set on Kenya. 4. Why did Brad decide to intervene in some way? A. To celebrate Grandma Joy’s 93rd birthday. B. To complete a task he promised Grandma Joy. C. To enrich Grandma Joy’s travelling experiences. D. To realize Grandma Joy’s dream of visiting parks. 5. Which of the following best describes their tour in Brad’s eyes? A. Tough and challenging. B. Tiring but educational. C. Stressful but eye-opening. D. Amazing and worthwhile. 6. Which factor mainly contributes to Grandma Joy’s good health? A. Her grandson’s inspiration. B. Her positive attitude. C. Her regular exercise. D. Her adventurous spirit. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Stay Curious, Stay Young B. Never too Old to Hit the Road C. Laughter, the Best Medicine D. Travelling Contributes to Long Life C Recently scientists have announced some good news: Several important tuna (金枪鱼) species have stepped back from the edge of extinction. Two bluefin tuna species, a yellowfin, and an albacore are no. longer seriously endangered or have moved off the leading international list of endangered species entirely. The unexpectedly fast recovery speaks to the success of efforts over the past decade to end overfishing. But tuna are not the only species scientists are thinking carefully at the 2021 World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France, which is organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Researchers warn that many other sea species continued to be imperiled. For example, more than a third of the world’s sharks are still threatened with extinction due to overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change. “I think the good news is that sustainable (可持续的) fishing industry is possible,” says Beth Polidoro, a biologist at Arizona State University. “We can eat fish without reducing the population to the point where it is on the road to dying out or extinction.” At the same time, she warns that the recovery should not encourage us to catch as many fish as we want. “We need to keep doing what’s working.” Polidoro adds. The IUCN, which determines the world’s most endangered species on its Red List of Threatened Species, also announced at the meeting that some animals are moving in the other direction, onto the Red List. Like the Komodo dragon, an lizard (蜥蜴), it is at particular risk from climate change. Of course, the work of protection is never over, and it will require close and continuous attention to make sure neither tuna nor Komodo dragons return to the edge of dying out. But for now, people can celebrate a few wins for the animal world. 8. What is the good news about tuna? A They have been removed from the list of endangered species. B. The fishing of tuna has been put to an end completely. C. The population of some tuna species has recovered. D. The number of some tuna species increases slowly. 9. What does the underlined word “imperiled” in paragraph 3 mean? A Dangerous. B. Sustainable. C. Disappointing. D. Endangered. 10. Why does the writer mention “the Komodo dragon” in paragraph 5? A. To introduce a topic. B. To make a comparison. C. To explain an idea. D. To give an example. 11 What is the writer s attitude towards the recovery of the tuna species? A. Positive. B. Concerned. C. Critical. D. Doubtful. D You might think people all over the United States have Wi-Fi — wireless Internet service — and mobile phones. But there is no such service in Green Bank, West Virginia, a tiny town four hours from the US capital, Washington D. C. Fewer than 150 people live in Green Bank; which has two churches, an elementary school and a public library. It is also home to the largest radio telescope in the world. There is a ban (禁令) on Wi-Fi in Green Bank, along with anything else that can create electromagnetic (电磁的) waves. Officials say the waves could disturb the telescope receives. For many Americans, a visit to Green Bank is a little like returning to the 1950s. To get there, you must read road signs because there is no GPS service in the town. People can connect with the Internet through telephones, but wireless service is not allowed. The observatory (天文台) is one of the largest employers in the area. The National Science Foundation (NSF) spends about $8.2 million a year to operate the observatory, telescope and educational center. Jonah Bauserman is a technician. If he supposes there is a signal that is not allowed in the zone, he drives to the house where the signal is coming from and checks it. But once a week, when the device is cleaned, some banned devices are allowed near it. People in the town respect the work of the scientists. And they say they are happy to live without Wi-Fi and mobile phones. “You know, instead of sitting here with our phones and other devices we’re out fishing, hunting and going to each other’s houses.” Everyone knows each other and communication is almost always face to face. 12. What will you see when you pay a visit to Green Bank? A. GPS service. B. Guide posts. C. Cellphone towers. D. Radio-controlled toys. 13. What is Jonah Bauserman’s duty in his work? A. Following signals from cellphones. B. Cleaning the telescope once a week. C. Listening for signals from outer space. D. Protecting the telescope from being affected. 14. What has the telescope brought to the local people? A. Great wealth. B. Many job chances. C. A healthier lifestyle. D. Much difficulty in life. 15. What may be the best title for this text? A. An American Town Without Wi-Fi and Mobile Phones B. Good relationships Between People in an American Town C. The largest Radio telescope in the World D. A Better Life Without Wireless Devices 第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to prepare for an exam is a big question that you always ask yourself. She put it into her school bag and ran home quickly. When she got home, she put the purse in her treasure box. But there was still one problem: How could she tell her parents about it? Then Laura remembered the prize of the writing contest was 300 pounds. She would tell her parents that she had won the prize. In fact, the contest would start in two weeks. She wanted to take part, but lacked confidence. The next day, Laura rushed home after school. She was just about to tell her mother the news when her mother said, “I have enough money left over this week for a treat. I’ve bought some strawberries. You can have one!” Laura paused, and quickly lost in thought. What would happen if her mother lost her purse and someone else kept it? They might not have any food for weeks! Laura ran to her room. She thanked Laura earnestly, explaining that the money was meant for an important payment she had to make tomorrow. Laura told Mrs. Jones about the coming writing contest. Mrs. Jones listened intently, her eyes lighting up with interest as Laura described her passion for writing and her hopes to participate. “You know, Laura,” Mrs. Jones said with a smile, “I think you have a real talent.
