A British driver, Billy Monger, was just 17 when he had an accident in a Formula 4 race, losing his legs as a result of the serious injuries. In a second, the teenager was facing a very different future. But Monger, who is now 25, refused to be defeated.
In October last year, Monger broke the world record for the fastest double amputee(被截肢者)to complete an IRONMAN at the World Championship, which is considered as one of the hardest endurance(耐力)events in the world. The athlete, who also works as a racing expert, took on the challenge with the goal of raising money for a non-profit organization which aims to fight global hunger and improve living conditions.
It’s perhaps obvious, when you consider the distances, that this event is not something you can simply walk into unprepared. For Monger, this was the result of a full year of training that taught him to deal with the difficult situation. With the help of expert trainers that become almost part of his close family, Monger trained nearly every day to get his body and mind in the best possible condition.
Being a double amputee, Monger faced a far more challenging preparation than most others. Running, for example, put huge pressure on his broken legs, so it was important that his prosthetics(假肢)fitted perfectly, or pain and soreness could possibly make him give up. Then came the cycle, where Monger decided to ride a pushbike rather than a handbike. It meant the former racing driver had to learn the basics over again.
After his record-breaking achievement, Monger said he has set his sights firmly on the Los Angeles Paralympics in 2028, where he hopes to compete for Great Britain in the para-triathlon. Whatever he does next, though, being a role model and providing support to others will remain Monger’s main goal.
4. What’s Monger’s purpose in joining in the IRONMAN World Championship?
A. To collect contributions for a good cause. B. To prove his ability to drive race cars.
C. To prepare for the Paralympics. D. To test his new prosthetic legs.
5. Why was Monger’s training especially difficult?
A. His preparations fell short.
B. He had to train alone without any support.
C He had never done endurance sports before.
D His prosthetic legs made running and cycling harder.
6. What can be expected of Monger in the future?
A. He may leave the sports field completely.
B. He will follow the footsteps of his role models.
C. He will hold on to his dreams while helping others.
D. He hopes to coach those sharing the same experience.
7. Which words can best describe Monger?
A. Tough-minded and inspiring. B. Kind-hearted and creative.
C. Lucky and generous. D. Independent and skilled.
A 5. D 6. C 7. A
根据第二段“The athlete, who also works as a racing expert, took on the challenge with the goal of raising money for a non-profit organization which aims to fight global hunger and improve living conditions.(这位运动员同时也是一名赛车专家,他接受这一挑战的目标是为一家旨在抗击全球饥饿和改善生活条件的非营利组织筹集资金。)”
根据文章第四段“Being a double amputee, Monger faced a far more challenging preparation than most others. Running, for example, put huge pressure on his broken legs, so it was important that his prosthetics(假肢)fitted perfectly, or pain and soreness could possibly make him give up. Then came the cycle, where Monger decided to ride a pushbike rather than a handbike. It meant the former racing driver had to learn the basics over again.(作为一名双截肢者,Monger面临的准备工作比大多数人更具挑战性。例如,跑步时会对他受伤的腿部造成巨大的压力,因此他的假肢必须完美贴合,否则疼痛和酸痛可能会让他放弃。接下来是自行车项目,Monger决定骑普通自行车而不是手摇自行车。这意味着这位曾经的赛车手不得不重新学习基础知识。)”可知,Monger的训练难是因为他的假肢让他跑步和骑自行车很困难,故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“After his record-breaking achievement, Monger said he has set his sights firmly on the Los Angeles Paralympics in 2028, where he hopes to compete for Great Britain in the para-triathlon. Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay put until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling fable is more than just a metaphor (隐喻).
Climate change is becoming one of the biggest threats to frogs and other amphibians, according to a major study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the primary reason why more than 100 amphibian species were slipping toward extinction.
The spread of disease among frogs and the destruction of their habitats have long been recognized as reasons why many amphibians are decreasing. But this new study establishes climate change as a major risk for amphibians around the world, too. The soft-skinned animals lack the fur and feathers to help adjust their temperature in this hotter and more drought-stricken world.
Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. But losing amphibians would be disastrous because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators (捕食者).“Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the breakdown of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.
Luckily, habitat protection and other conservation measures have been taken to help recover more than five dozen amphibians from Costa Rica to Malaysia. “It’s not all bad news,” said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase investment in amphibian conservation.”
8. How is the topic introduced?
A. By listing facts. B. By explaining ideas.
C. By sharing a story. D. By raising a question.
9. What is the main reason for the decrease of amphibians according to the new study?
A. The spread of disease. B. The loss of habitats.
C. The rise of temperature. D. The lack of feathers.
10. What will happen if the number of amphibians decreases?
A. The food chain will be destroyed. B. Wolves will depend more on insects.
C. Predators will be the key role of the web. D. The ecosystem will become more diverse.
11. How does Luedtke feel about the future of amphibians?
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Uncertain. D. Curious.
C 9. C 10. A 11. B
根据第一段“Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay put until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling fable is more than just a metaphor (隐喻).(每个人都知道这一点:在一锅水里慢慢地给青蛙加热,青蛙不会跳出来。没有意识到热量的轻微增加,它会一直呆在那里,直到——嗯,直到它死去。当谈到全球气温上升对两栖动物的影响时,煮青蛙的寓言不仅仅是一个比喻)”可知,文章通过分享故事引入。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the primary reason why more than 100 amphibian species were slipping toward extinction.(2004年至2022年间,气温上升成为100多种两栖动物濒临灭绝的主要原因)”可知,根据这项新研究,导致两栖动物数量减少的主要原因是温度的升高。
根据倒数第二段“Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. But losing amphibians would be disastrous because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators (捕食者).“Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the breakdown of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.(与鸟类等更知名的群体相比,青蛙和其他两栖动物受到的关注较少。但是失去两栖动物将是灾难性的,因为它们通常是生态系统食物网的关键环节,它们吞噬昆虫,反过来又被更大的捕食者吃掉。“没有这些两栖动物来填补这个角色,我们将看到这个食物网的崩溃,”在奥斯汀一家环境组织工作的尼姆说)”可知,如果两栖动物的数量减少,食物链将被破坏。故选A。
根据““It’s not all bad news,” said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase investment in amphibian conservation.”(“也不全是坏消息,”国际自然保护联盟两栖动物小组负责人珍妮弗·吕德克说。“但我们真的必须在这一改善的基础上,大幅增加对两栖动物保护的投资。”)”可知,吕德克对两栖动物的未来充满希望。故选B。

A team of researchers in Florida may have just created the world’s coolest paint ever. Chanda, a researcher in the University of Central Florida, and his team have created a way to imitate copy nature’s ability to reflect light and create beautifully vivid color without absorbing any heat like traditional pigments (色素) do. They focus on exploring structural color (结构色) and how people could use it to live cooler in a rapidly warming world.
Structural colors are created not from traditional pigmentation but from the arrangement of colorless materials to reflect light in certain ways, like how rainbows are made after it rains. Think about the most beautiful colors you’ve ever seen — forest green, wine red or crystal blue, some of which, however, are nearly impossible to recreate artificially. That’s because these beautiful colors are not achieved through pigments — they’re all in the structure, like the green of peacocks’ feathers.
Think about those cherries that redden your mouth after eating them or when your jeans turned green from sitting in wet grass. These are pigments. To create these colors, synthetic (合成的) materials like heavy metals are used to create vivid paints. Chanda stressed, “A deep blue needs cobalt; a deep red needs cadmium. They are toxic. We are contaminating our nature by using this kind of paint. So one of the major motivations for us is to create colors based on non-toxic materials.”
Beyond the beautiful colors and safety that structure can provide, Chanda also found that unlike pigments, structural paint does not absorb heat but reflects light back. That’s why people are advised to wear lighter colors in hotter days and why many buildings are painted white. This means this eco-friendly paint could help communities keep cool in an increasingly warming climate.
“Nature has followed the path to create harmony among our surroundings,” Chanda said. “We want to be colorful but our color production is not really supported or inspired by nature. I hope this paint could be the future to a healthier, cooler environment.”
12. Which of the following colors doesn’t belong to structural colors?
A. The green of peacocks’ feathers.
B. The orange of bright rainbows.
C. The blue of butterfly wings.
D. The purple of ripe grapes.
13. What does the underlined word “toxic” in the third paragraph probably mean?
A. Neutral. B. Useless. C. Attractive. D. Harmful.
14. Which of the following best describes the advantages of the newly-created paint?
A. Traditional, healthy and cooling.
B. Colorless, healthy and artificial.
C. Vivid, eco-friendly and cooling.
D. Vivid, man-made and eco-friendly.
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. The paint of structural color could help people live cooler and healthier.
B. Traditional approaches of color production remain to be improved.
C Human beings should respect the harmony of our surroundings.
D. Many attractive colors couldn’t be recreated artificially.
D 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第二段“Structural colors are created not from traditional pigmentation but from the arrangement of colorless materials to reflect light in certain ways, like how rainbows are made after it rains. Think about the most beautiful colors you’ve ever seen — forest green, wine red or crystal blue, some of which, however, are nearly impossible to recreate artificially.(结构色彩不是通过传统的色素沉着创造出来的,而是通过无色材料的排列以特定的方式反射光线,就像雨后彩虹的形成一样。想想你见过的最美丽的颜色——森林绿、酒红或水晶蓝,然而,其中一些几乎是不可能人工重现的)”以及第三段“Think about those cherries that redden your mouth after eating them or when your jeans turned green from sitting in wet grass. These are pigments.(想想那些吃了樱桃后你的嘴会变红,或者你的牛仔裤因为坐在潮湿的草地上而变绿。这些是颜料。)”可知,D选项的葡萄与文章中的樱桃及草相似,含有色素,是非结构色,故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“We are contaminating our nature by using this kind of paint. So one of the major motivations for us is to create colors based on non-toxic materials.(我们使用这种油漆正在污染我们的自然。因此,我们的主要动机之一是创造基于无毒材料的颜色)”可知,使用此类涂料会污染自然环境,是有害的,划线单词的含义是“有害的”。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Beyond the beautiful colors and safety that structure can provide, Chanda also found that unlike pigments, structural paint does not absorb heat but reflects light back.(除了结构所能提供的美丽色彩和安全性之外,Chanda还发现,与颜料不同,结构涂料不吸收热量,而是将光反射回去)”和“This means this eco-friendly paint could help communities keep cool in an increasingly warming climate.(这意味着这种环保涂料可以帮助社区在日益变暖的气候中保持凉爽)”可知,新研发的这种涂料的优势在于它模仿自然界的结构色,无需吸收热量就能反射光线创造出鲜明的颜色,而且是基于非毒性材料制成的。
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中的“A team of researchers in Florida may have just created the world’s coolest paint ever.(佛罗里达州的一组研究人员可能刚刚创造了世界上最酷的油漆)”和末段的“I hope this paint could be the future to a healthier, cooler environment.(我希望这种涂料能成为未来更健康、更凉爽的环境)”可知,研究者Chanda和他的团队运用结构色原理创造了一种生态友好的新型涂料,使用结构色能帮助人们享受更凉爽和健康的生活,因此主旨是A选项“The paint of structural color could help people live cooler and healthier.(结构色涂料可以帮助人们生活得更凉爽、更健康。)”。故选A。
It’s highly expected that students need to develop their critical thinking skills. In other words, students need to learn how to collect information, make judgments about the information and apply it to a new context. One way to develop students’ critical thinking is to be creative about the questions they ask.
___16___ For example, they help students be better language learners. Often, questions are the first point of contact. Even if the questions are not good enough, they are going to direct the level of your conversation. ___17___ And when you believe in yourself, you can have more interaction, which might lead to critical thinking.
The usual question-asking pattern starts with specific questions and then moves to abstract questions. ___18___ Firstly, create questions about information in the text you’re reading. Secondly, create questions about what the information in the text has to do with your own life. Finally, you create questions about abstract ideas—ideas that have come up in the questions about yourself. During the process, you’ve practiced creative ways to ask questions. ___19___
However, when you are told which questions to answer, you are less likely to be creative about the questions you ask. ___20___ Try making a list of questions that go from concrete to abstract, like the steps given above.
A. So, practice developing your own questions.
B. So, respond to the questions related to your own life.
C. Additionally, people who ask questions are very confident.
D. You can develop questions in three steps when you read a new text.
E. Question-asking activities are beneficial for students in many ways.
F. The ability to ask abstract questions is related to higher-order thinking quality.
G. Meanwhile, you’ve practiced critical thinking by connecting information to yourself.
E 17. C 18. D 19. G 20. A

“Somebody will get laughed at,” announced May Jordan. Frozen by fear, the group of students surrounding May silently hoped that her latest victim wasn’t among them, but they knew full well that there was always a chance.
I loved school. But since May had transferred (转学) in, our school had become an uncomfortable place. At about five feet eight inches, May was the tallest kid in our fifth grade class. She routinely played jokes on innocent third graders who were too afraid to defend themselves.
I had managed to keep silent, and I wanted to keep it that way. But all that changed when I showed up for school one morning with a new hairstyle. It all started when my best friend, Jaime, said my hair looked nice. I noticed May’s unfriendly eyes; it made me uncomfortable, but I remained focused on my math worksheet. Then came May’s frightening claim across the room: “Nice braid(发辫). Somebody might cut it off.”
I was scared. But what really sent me into desperation was when May moved her fingers to imitate (模仿) a pair of scissors in motion. My stomach dropped to my knees, and I immediately came up with a plan, which involved hiding out in the bathroom at the end of the school day so as to avoid running into May on the walk home.
I awoke the next morning with a start and hurried to the bathroom to watch my mother get ready for work. “What’s wrong, Courtney?” my mother asked. I told my mother the whole story.
My mother said seriously, “She makes merry by making others scared. That’s all. Don’t be afraid of her, Courtney. If she can see that you’re not afraid, she will stop. I’ll bet she’s like everybody else— she just wants to fit in and make friends. Perhaps she just doesn’t know how.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
With my mother’s words rolling in my head, I decided to do something.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Unexpectedly, May smiled and agreed to go to my house after school with me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
With my mother’s words rolling in my head, I decided to do something. After lunch, I approached May who was sharpening her pencil and went for broke. I invited her to come to my house after school. "We could walk home together, if you’d like. Maybe watch the Nickelodeon Channel?" I offered. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I was somewhat calmed by the idea that I’d be in my home, under the watchful eye of my parents, where little could go wrong. Still, I was proud that I had extended the invitation.
Unexpectedly, May smiled and agreed to go to my house after school with me. I don’t remember what we watched on television, or what my mother prepared for our after-school snack. But I do know that May Jordan has never done bad things again and has been kind to everyone around her. And we became pretty good friends. After spending countless afternoons at my house, I realized that, yes, underneath the tall girl’s armor was an insecure fifth grader who wanted nothing more than to be accepted. You can’t judge a book by its cover. Someone who looks different on the outside can really be just like you.

A To collect contributions for a good cause. B. To prove his ability to drive race cars.
C. To prepare for the Paralympics. D. To test his new prosthetic legs.
5. Why was Monger’s training especially difficult?
A. His preparations fell short.
B. He had to train alone without any support.
C. He had never done endurance sports before.
D. His prosthetic legs made running and cycling harder.
6. What can be expected of Monger in the future?
A. He may leave the sports field completely.
B. He will follow the footsteps of his role models.
C. He will hold on to his dreams while helping others.
D. He hopes to coach those sharing the same experience.
7. Which words can best describe Monger?
A. Tough-minded and inspiring. B. Kind-hearted and creative.
C. Lucky and generous. D. Independent and skilled.

A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Uncertain. D. Curious.
D
