While I was looking through the pages of the newspaper, an ad caught my eye. “Taronga Zoo is in need of volunteers,” I said to my husband, Peter.
It was 1975 and, born in Basel, Switzerland, I'd studied languages and worked at the Interpreter School in Zurich, then as a secretary in international business, before moving to Australia in the 1960s.
Having been a stay-at-home mum to my teenage son, my language skills had dwindled. “Helping out at the zoo and meeting visitors from all over the world would be a great way to improve my German, Italian and French, " I said.
Having visited Taronga Zoo, a not-for-profit, several times, I'd grown fond of the animals, especially the Australian wildlife, and wanted to help promote the importance the zoo plays in animal protection. So at 41, I handed in my application and was accepted! I attended lectures, learning about animals' diets, behavior, reproduction (繁殖) and habitat. We also learned about how the zoo operated, and were taught how to give animal tour talks.
On my first day, I waited for visitors to gather for a tour. Soon a lone overseas tourist approached. I took him from the koalas to the kangaroos and then on to the bird enclosures(围场)。 At the end, I was delighted—I loved sharing my new-found knowledge! It became my favorite day of the week and now, 48 years on, I love it just as much as day one!
I'm honored and proud to say I'm Taronga's longest-serving volunteer. Being a volunteer is the most worthwhile and enjoyable thing I've done - everyone should be one!

The city government of Paris has long worked to make the city less dependent on cars. Over a number of years, it put in restrictions (限制) on cars and increased the amount of bike lanes(车道)from 200 kilometers to over 1,000 kilometers. Now, its effort seems to have paid off. This year, Parisians aren't complaining about too much automobile traffic. Instead, they say there are too many bikes.
Some famous roads along the River Seine are completely closed to cars. Now you see people riding bikes, running, and walking with their families along the river. In another part of Paris, a bike path on Sebastopol Boulevard is one of the busiest in Europe, after opening in 2019. In one week in early September, it recorded a record high of 124, 000 riders.
Paris en Selle is a volunteer organization supporting cycling in the city. It says the French capital’s bike paths are busier than some popular ones in London and almost as busy as some in Amsterdam, which is known for its high bike usage.
The city will host the Summer Olympics in 2024 and plans to add more bike lanes by then. Paris wants to reduce its pollution by half during the games, even as visitors from around the world will be in the city for the event. Organizers say all of the competition sites will be reachable by bike through a 60-kilometer network of bike lanes.
The change to Paris, however, has not been easy. With more people using bikes, more people are making mistakes. Some of them are new to cycling and disobey traffic rules.
8. How does the city government encourage bike-riding?
A. By limiting the production of cars. B. By building more city bike lanes.
C. By showing the benefits of riding. D. By closing roads to the automobile.
9. What do we know about Paris?

D. It plans a network of bike lanes for athletes.
10. What problem do cyclists face now?
A. A lack of parking space.
B. Bicycle traffic jams.
C. Breaking traffic rules.
D. High prices of bikes.
11. What is the text?
A. A science fiction.

A newly discovered comet(彗星) is passing through our solar system for the first time immure than 400 years. Scientists say star watchers across the Northern Hemisphere should look to the sky as soon as possible, either this week or early next. They say it will be another 400 years before the comet returns to our neighborhood.
The comet's official name is C/2023 P1 Nishimura. It is about one kilometer wide. The comet was discovered in August by a Japanese star watcher, Hideo Nishimura. He discovered the comet using 30-second-long exposures (曝光) with a digital camera.
The American space agency NASA says the comet has increased in brightness as it crosses our solar system. As the comet heads closer to the sun, it will continue to get brighter.
Paul Chodas, head of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, said, “You really need a good pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜) to pick it out and you also need to know where to look. " The comet will come closest to the sun on about September 17. Then it will leave the solar system. Chodas said the comet is “likely to survive its passage”, meaning he doesn't believe it will burn up near the sun.
Italian astronomer Gianluca Masi, the founder of the Virtual Telescope Project, said that the next week represents “the last, possible chances” to see the comet from the Northern Hemisphere before it is lost in the sun's great brightness.
Professional astronomers use powerful telescopes (望远镜) around the world to watch the sky. It is unusual for a non-professional sky watcher to discover a comet these days. Chodas said of Nishimura's discovery, “This is his third find, so good for him. "
The comet last visited about 430 years ago, Chodas said.

Some dads don't like being too affectionate and even you might find it strange to be physically affectionate. Know that caring human touch is a basic need.
Respect him even if you disagree. It can be difficult not to answer back, especially if you don’t agree with something your dad is saying or if he doesn't allow you to have something you greatly want. Across the United States, schools are working hard to help students catch up in math. Test scores after the pandemic(流行病) show just how behind students are. On average, education experts say American students' math knowledge is about half a school year behind where it should be.
Children lost ground on reading tests, too, but the math declines (下降) were more serious. Experts say online learning made it more difficult for math instruction. It was harder for teachers to guide students over a screen or see weaknesses in their skills. At home, parents were more likely to read with their children than to practice math.
The result: students' math skills declined around the nation. And students are not recovering as quickly as educators hoped. Educators worry about how they will perform in high school and whether science, technology and medical fields will be available to them.
Jennifer Matthews teaches eighth grade at Moultrie Middle School in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She said her students have shown little interest in understanding her math lessons. “They don't allow themselves to process the material. They don't allow themselves to think, ‘this might take a day to understand or learn, '” she said.
Using the money from the government, some schools have added tutors (家教)。 Some have started new approaches to teaching to help in the recovery. But that money will run out by next September before many children have caught up. Yet the great thing is, the efforts appear to be working: State testing shows math scores have started to increase for most of county middle schools.

How to Write a Book
Anyone with a story to tell can write a book, either for their own enjoyment or to publish for all to see. 16
Make clear why you're writing a book.
17 Are you hoping to become rich and famous? Do you dream of seeing your name on a book cover? Do you simply have a great story that you want to share with the world?
Set up a workspace that works for you.
There's no one perfect workspace for every writer. Some prefer a tidy desk in a quiet room. 18 Anyway, make sure that the place you choose works with your proper writing medium. If you want to write on a desktop, make sure to have a desk and plug point (插座) nearby! Establish daily and weekly writing goals.
Instead of hoping to produce 10 pages at a time during a random flash of creativity, try setting a goal to write 1 page each day. 19 Besides, try not to adjust it after you've set it. 20
Don't wait until you've completed an entire book before showing it to anyone. Let someone you trust look over each chapter and offer general opinions on the quality of the work, rather than editing for style and grammar.
A. It's important to set a writing goal.
B. Get general opinions early and often.
C. Sometimes, home is the best choice for writing.
D. However, others work best in a noisy coffee shop.
E. Set your writing goal based on your writing speed and deadlines.
F. Before you start writing, ask yourself about your reasons for writing it.
G. Getting started is often difficult, so here are some tips on how to write a book.

A mother goat can pick out her own baby from its voice alone by the time the kid is just five days old.
Researchers from University of London played kids' bleats to female goats and studied their responses. They were surprised to find that the animals were able to pick out their own kids’ voices.
“The mother and the kid rely a lot on smell to recognize one another and the animals hide in grass and don't call much in the wild during the first week of their lives. It's a strategy they use to avoid enemies,” Dr. Elodie Briefer explained to BBC News, who led the research. “The mother calls to the kids when she wants them to come and be fed, so we expected that kids would recognize the mothers' voices.” In fact, this was the case for deer, which also use this hiding strategy, although they do not belong to the same family of species as goats.
She and her team recorded and played the young kids' calls to the female goats and recorded their responses. She explained, “Even when the calls came from kids that are five to six days old, we could see the mothers responding more to the voices of their own babies. "Hearing the voices of their own kids, the females would look towards the speaker that the sound was coming from, moving around and calling in response.
The scientists say that understanding how goats behave and communicate is of great importance. “This helps us understand just how smart these animals are,” said Dr. Briefer. “Farmers might be able to change their way to raise goats considering this natural behavior.”

Sun Yi finally received an email she had long been waiting for, which contained her final wedding plan. The plan, which had been revised nearly ten times, offered the 29-year-old girl a “new Chinese-style” wedding in March. She described it as “traditional but not old-fashioned” and “ritualistic(仪式的) but stylish. ”
In recent years, traditional Chinese weddings have won popularity again among the country's newly-married. Many of them no longer consider western-style dresses and words of “I do” as important parts of weddings. Instead, they now prefer wearing Tang Dynasty-style clothes and performing traditional rituals at weddings the same way their ancestors did hundreds, even thousands of years ago.
In traditional Chinese weddings, couples usually wear red. Red is always a symbol of fortune in Chinese culture, and the hall of the ceremony is also richly decorated in red. Couples will perform a three-step ritual, namely to heaven and earth, to their parents and to each other.
In Lanzhou, several wedding planning companies are sparing no effort to promote their “Chinese-style wedding packages”, which offer a wide range of choices for wedding plans. Chinese-style weddings make up nearly 40 percent of our orders. Customers often need to make reservations six months in advance, said Zhang, a wedding planner.
Wang Yiru, another wedding planner in Lanzhou, Xinxin Wedding Service Company, said the preparation for a Chinese-style wedding is usually very time-consuming and costly.

Many of us would listen to music while we are work, thinking that it will help us to concentrate on the task at hand. In fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects on creativity.
The idea that listening to music while working is good for output probably has its roots in the so-called “Mozart Effect”. Put simply, the reasoning ability is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart's, compared to no sound at all.
How sounds affect performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years. It is observed through a phenomenon called the irrelative sound effect. To study the irrelative sound effect, participants are asked to complete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in an exact order. The difficult thing is doing this while ignoring the background noise.
Two key characteristics of the irrelative sound effect are required. First, subjects (受试者)are required to use their memory ability. Second, the sound must contain acoustical(听觉的)variation.
The irrelative sound effect comes from attempting to process two sources of ordered information at the same time. One is from the task, and the other is from the sound. Unfortunately, only the former is required to perform in the recall task, and the effort to prevent processing irrelevant order information from the sound hinders the memory ability.
A similar problem is also seen when reading in the presence of music with lyrics (歌)。In this situation, the two sources of words from the task and the sound will hinder each other. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics.
What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or hinders performance depends on the task and the type of music and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels.
12. What is "Mozart Effect" mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To explain how music can help people relax. B. To show music can improve performance.
C. To advise people to listen to Mozart's music. D. To stress Mozart's music gains wide uses.

In the 13th century, when the West got its first impression of ancient China through Italian businessman Marco Polo's writing, the country had little contact with the outside world.
