VIEW AND LEARN
Watch Part 1 of the video, and answer the questions below.
1. Why did Laura become interested in this topic?
2. What question did she ask?
3. What did she decide to do in order to find answers to her question?
She noticed she (and maybe others) often hesitated to give or receive praise/thanks, felt shy/embarrassed, and wondered if she was alone in this.
“Am I the only one who holds back from giving/receiving praise/thanks?” (Or: “Why do people avoid expressing/accepting praise and gratitude?”)
She investigated—by observing people (e.g., in rehab facilities) and exploring why people struggle to ask for or give genuine praise.

39
2. Think about what you want other people to thank you for. How would you ask for it?
EXPRESS YOURSELF
What: Organizing group project schedules as team leader.

1. What is peer pressure and how does it affect people?
2. What suggestions does the writer give to avoid peer pressure?
GENERAL UNDERSTANDING
Peer pressure is the influence from peers to do things (unusual for oneself) to gain acceptance. It shapes dressing, talking, music choices, attitudes, and behavior. Teens (wanting to fit in) struggle to resist it. Those with low confidence may follow risky/wrong paths (e.g., the student copying wrong answers).
Build self - confidence to say “no”.
Choose friends wisely (positive role models who accept/support).
Think about action consequences before giving in.
42
CRITICAL THINKING
3. What attitude does the writer have towards peer pressure? How do you know?
4. What is your opinion about the writer's suggestions on how to avoid peer pressure? What might be the challenges?
The writer is concerned (sees its harms like bullying, wrong choices) and solution - oriented (gives advice to avoid it).
The suggestions are practical (self - confidence, good friends, and thinking ahead help resist pressure). However, building confidence takes time; leaving a negative peer group is hard; and in the moment, remembering to think of consequences can be tough.

1. Read the text. Are these statements true (T) or false (F) according to the text?
( ) 1 Extroverts prefer to be surrounded by people rather than to be on their own.
( ) 2 Introverts don’t think carefully before they do things.
( ) 3 Scientists agree that extroverts are born with this personality trait.
( ) 4 Introverts tend to be happier than extroverts.

2. Do you agree with the writer's opinion that attitudes towards introverts and extroverts vary in different cultures? Why?
CRITICAL THINKING
I agree. Different cultures have different values. For example, American culture emphasizes social interaction and being outgoing, so extrovert qualities are valued. While in some Asian cultures, qualities like being reserved and thoughtful (introvert traits) are seen as more polite and respectful, so introvert characteristics are more highly regarded.
46
3. What might be the reasons that people who live on islands tend to be more introverted?
CRITICAL THINKING
Islands are relatively isolated. There may be fewer social interactions compared to mainland areas. People living there might adapt to a more self - sufficient and less social lifestyle, which could lead to developing more introverted traits. Also, the quiet and peaceful environment of islands might encourage people to focus more on internal thoughts and self - reflection.
