When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it’s easy to be hard on yourself. Then stress is caused. Feelings of anger, disappointment and sadness come along. That’s why such stress needs to be dealt with.
Max, a 14-year-old boy, used to be very competitive and always felt stressed. Now he is learning to give himself care and kindness. When he doesn’t win or get the top marks, he talks to himself, “It’s OK not to be perfect.” He knows he always does his best and that is enough.
What Max does is called self-compassion (自我和解). With self-compassion, you treat yourself kindly like a friend. It allows you to forgive (原谅) yourself when you mess up or fail. After feelings of guilt (愧疚) go away, you get more relaxed and you can think more clearly. This way self-compassion makes you move forward. Many studies have shown it is of great help.
However, some disagree. They argue that self-compassion leads people to be less active. But Breines and Chen’s study had a different result. They gave students a difficult word test. The students were given the chance to study for a second test. They found those who were compassionate toward their failure spent more time preparing.
Experts suggest that you should write a letter to yourself, describing the situation that causes your pain and accepting how you feel. Or you can do something you like to make yourself feel at peace. Suzy Reading, a psychologist (心理学家), suggests using a “gentle touch” like placing one both hands on your heart, so you will feel safe and loved.
Being hard on yourself causes stress. However, 74 . Se-compassion means being kind to yourself. With its help, you will have more relaxation and a clearer mind so that 75 . Some think differently, but a study shows that 76 . To practice self-compassion, some 77 are suggested by experts.

“Do you get enough sleep?” The answer is probably no if you ask a tired student who is always taking a nap (小睡) on a classroom desk. “I couldn’t get to sleep and experienced a restless night again.” You may often hear such words from an adult. Not having enough 74 is a common problem around the world.
However, sleep is just like food and water to us. 75 of us can live if we don’t sleep at all. Sleep experts say that an adult requires 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night and a teenager needs 8.5 to 9.5 hours. Anything less could be h 76 to our health.
According to a study, sleeping only five hours a night for a week is like having a blood-alcohol (酒精) level of 0.1 percent. That is above the safe driving limit (限制) in most countries. Most people probably wouldn’t take an exam or go to work if they get drunk. But 77 enough sleep, they still do these things. As a result, they 78 in the exams or perform badly at work. What’s worse, doctors and nurses often work long hours. When they are sleepy, they might hurt a patient or even 79 a patient’s death by accident.
80 sleep is so important, many people these days are not getting enough. In a survey, twenty percent say that daytime sleepiness influences their daily work. They feel it hard to pay full attention during the day. However, they don’t seem to care. Some even show off how energetic they can be the next day just with little sleep. It may be time to wake up and 81 the way we think. We should realize that not sleeping enough is a serious problem.

We often see people carrying bottles to make sure they drink enough water to stay healthy. After all, more than half of the human body is made up of water.
Many people have heard that we should drink 2000ml of water a day. Where does this number come from? Scientist John Speakman explains, “If you look at the governments’ suggestions around the world, you’ll find almost all of them give the same answer. To everyone’s surprise, this advice doesn’t come from any research. Instead, it’s just a guess that is widely accepted by the public.” In fact, the amount (数量) of water in our body is changing all the time. Like your bank account going down when you spend money, your body loses water when you breathe, sweat, or use the bathroom. The truth is that there is a strong connection between people’s body size and the water they need.
Since everyone knows drinking water keeps us healthy, what will happen if we drink less than we should? Dr. Nidia describes the result of being short of water, “We often start dehydrating (脱水) without realizing it. It’s very common that sometimes we think we’ re hungry and want to have some food, but this usually means that it’s time to drink some water.” Dr. Nidia also added that our body send messages, such as low energy, headache or dry mouth, to show we’ve already been short of water.
In general, whether to drink a little more or a little less, the more important thing is that to keep ourselves fresh and energetic.
Hello, everyone. I’m Li Hua, and I’d like to share an interesting passage with you today, which mainly talks about two things about drinking water.
One is about 45 . Almost all the governments in the world recommend that people should drink 2000ml of water a day. But according to the scientist John Speaksman, this number is not based on research, but just a guess. In fact, the water you need 46 .
It also discusses what will happen if we don’t drink enough water. According to Dr. Nidia’s opinion, hunger for food usually means that we are short of water. What’s more, 47 , such as low energy, headache, or dry mouth, might also show that we have already started dehydrating.
Even though some information was lost in the last paragraph, I guess the writer tries to tell us something important to help us keep healthy. Therefore, the missing part should be “ 48 .
From all above, I believe you have realized how important the water is for human bodies! What an interesting and valuable passage!

Confucius (551—479 BC) was a great thinker and teacher in the Spring and Autumn Period of China. He was born in Qufu, the capital of the state of Lu (part of Shandong). He acted as an official (官员) there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. And he tried to teach people that peace was very important for a healthy society. However, it was not until the rule of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty (156—87 BC) that his ideas were finally put into practice. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius’ teachings formed the base of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues (美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius’ thought is considered to have been the necessity of Eastern thought. Here’s one of Confucius’ famous sayings, “In the company of two others, I can always find one worthy of being my teacher”, which has been popular at home and abroad for thousands of years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren (kindness, charity), yi (fairness), li (ceremony, tradition), zhi (knowledge), and xin (trust). Another virtue is xiao. Xiao is the duties a person has to their parents.
It is clear that Confucius ’ thought will continue to be a necessary part of Chinese culture. And it will continue to do something good to the development of China and even the whole world.

Chinese humor in English is helping the world understand Chinese culture better. It’s used a lot, especially on social media (社交媒体). This shows that Chinglish, a mix of English and Chinese, is not always regarded as wrong now like it used to be, but as a fun way to connect with others.
A popular example is a post (帖子) by a foreign blogger on a Chinese website. She talked about parting from her boyfriend. Many Chinese people left their ideas in English to comfort her, but their English wasn’t perfect. So some words of kindness turned into “You pretty, he not, u swan, he frog”. But others think it was fine because it was fast and convenient to write shorter words without changing the main meaning.
Chinglish even plays a part in the Oxford English Dictionary. Phrases like “add oil”, meaning jiayou in Chinese and “cheer” in English, have already been in the dictionary. Similar examples also include “Long time no see”. Such an act shows so many people have used the phrases or words that they can’t be neglected (忽视) .
After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, people started to accept Chinglish more. It’s now seen in things like video games, where Chinese words are kept instead of being translated. This can be seen from the latest hot game around the world with a rich Chinese culture—Black Myth: Wukong.
In it, the Chinese words like yaoguai are no longer translated into English words, but kept as they are in Chinese. And foreign players just accept them and learn them happily as part of Chinese culture. Chinese people are also helping others understand their culture by explaining Chinglish words in games. This helps people around the world learn more about China.
But some people also show their worries. A teacher said that Chinglish should not be used in situations like in class or at an important work meeting or discussion. It may cause misunderstanding and make others think you’re impolite.

Dear Patrick,
At the beginning of the term, I made a study plan with my best friend so that we could cheer up each other in our learning journey, but now I feel like she’s not taking it seriously enough. It makes me angry.
Lulu
Hi Lulu,
First, when you two first made the study plan, was it treated as a fun idea or something serious? Your friend might not realize how annoyed you feel at her. Besides, there might be something in her life which is drawing her attention from the plan. Or it could be just as simple as being lazy.
Still, you won’t know until you ask her directly. Rather tell her straight away about how you feel. Ask her if anything has changed, and express that you want to help get her back on plan.
Though, this isn’t a legal (法律的) agreement. As angry as you may feel now, it would be also upsetting to force her to do something which she no longer wants to. If that is the situation, it might be better to just let it go and find a new study partner while keeping your relationship with her still as a friend.

(25·重庆第一中学校一模)Tina, 14 years old, is a hard-working student. She follows the rules at school and does whatever her parents, teachers and even friends tell her to do. She is used to saying “yes” to everything. But Tina is not always happy about this. Sometimes, Tina doesn’t have time to help others, but she just can’t say no. How she wishes she could change!
Have you ever had such an experience? Saying “no” to others can be hard for some people. However, saying “no” is a basic right. It means you’ve made a choice about what is important to you.
So if you have the same problem as Tina, the first thing you need to do is to allow yourself to say “no”. Keep in mind that if the other person cares about you, he or she will respect your decision and won’t hold it against you.
If you still feel bad about saying “no”, what can you do? When your friend invites you to a party you don’t want to go to, you can start with something like “Thank you so much for inviting me, but I have a family event that day. I hope you have a great time!” When your friend asks you to clean the classroom for him, you can say, “I’m sorry. I’m really busy with my own homework right now. I can’t help this time, but maybe we can work together next time.”
If guilty (内疚) keeps you from saying “no”, try sharing something useful instead of your time. For example, if your friend asks you to help with his math when you are busy, you can lend him your notes or recommend (推荐) a good book. You can also suggest someone else who can help. Maybe you know another classmate who is good at math and has more free time.
It’s not easy to say “no”, but it helps you to save energy for something important. At the same time, it also gives you a feeling of freedom.

We humans have been changing the world around us for a very long time. A 2024 study even found that humans in Africa may have used fire to prevent forest regrowth as early as 85,000 years ago. We change the animals around us too. Most famously turning wild wolves into dogs, maybe as early as 40,000 years ago.
And our effect on animals hasn’t stopped, right up to the present day. Because as we change the world, animals have to change if they want to survive.
For one example, consider how the roads we drive on could be changing the birds that fly over them. A study of swallows in Nebraska found that, from 1983 to 2022, the birds’ wings got shorter—probably because having smaller wings made them better at avoiding cars. The number of swallows killed by cars actually went down over the study period, even as the total swallow population increased—and most of the swallows that were killed have longer wings.
A human activity may also have led elephants to be born without tusks (the teeth of the elephants). Both male and female African elephants usually have tusks. But naturally fewer tuskless females were to be killed. So half of the female elephants were born without tusks, unlike those before.
Living close to humans may even make some animals smarter. City raccoons are better than country ones at opening bottles to get food. City raccoons have also learned to keep smaller fields so they don’t have to cross major roads, where they’re in greater danger!

My Reflection: These examples show how animals are rapidly changing their bodies and habits to fit this human-centered world. However, humans are not the only creatures living on the earth. So 53 .

Everyone wants to be successful. The trouble is, most people want to be seen or known as successful more than they want to break the bad habits which may lead them to be unsuccessful. That’s because the lifestyle and rewards (回报) that come with success make everything seem easy.
People think that once they’re successful, they’ll have all the time in the world to do whatever they want. They think they’ll never have to work hard again. Because of this, they only see others’ success but miss the hard work, good habits and smart choices those people made along the way. As a result, they stay focused on all the wrong things, and never truly become successful.
One big reason people don’t succeed is that they talk a lot about their plans but seldom take real action. They believe they can work harder than others but never actually do the work. They also think that anyone who has achieved success was just lucky or knew someone. They do not face the truth: someone else is working hard and getting the rewards.
Another reason is that most of their time is spent on many fun activities like playing computer games or hanging out with friends, while successful people use their time to build good relationships, learn new skills, and work on projects that help them improve. They understand that for every hour they spend doing one thing, that’s an hour they cannot invest (投资) doing something else. Time is limited. If you use it all up, you can’t invest it to achieve success.
Many people want to be successful, but they care more about looking successful than doing the hard work needed. They think success means an easy life, forgetting it requires them to work hard, have good habits and 50 .
51 often make two mistakes. First, they talk but don’t act. They make big plans but never start, and think others succeed just by luck. Second, 52 . They spend hours on games or hanging out instead of learning useful skills. However, successful people treat time as treasure. They invest time in their future by building relationships, learning skills and working on projects to 53 . Remember: Your choices today decide your future. If you want success, start now!

Reading English books is a good way to improve English. Beginners may find that stories for kids are too childish. But if a novel is too difficult, you even want to give up before you finish it. How do you choose the book that’s right for you? Here are some tips that could help!
Interest is the best teacher! The first thing is to find something you’re interested in. You’ll be more likely to enjoy it, and it might help you overcome vocabulary challenges too. For example, a fan of football can read books about football. There may be many words that are shared by both your first language and English.
If you’ve found a book but you’re not sure if it’s right for you, experts suggest doing the five-finger test. Begin reading the book, and every time you meet a word you don’t understand, raise a finger. If you raise four or five fingers on one page, perhaps the book is too challenging. But if you only raise less than one finger, or don’t raise any at all, maybe the book is too easy! This test is usually used to help parents choose good books for their children to read, but it can help language learners too!
In addition, experts also suggest choosing something that you know well. It could be a novel you’ve already read in your first language. You can also choose a book of a film that you’ve already seen. It’s easy for you to follow them because you know the story and the characters well. And, you will learn some new expressions before you even know it.
Reading Report
Hello, everyone!
Today I’ll introduce the passage I read yesterday. It gives us some good ideas about 50 .
First, connect the books with your interests. 51 , read football-related books. This makes learning new words easier. Second, you can try the five-finger test. Raise a finger 52 . If 5 fingers are raised on one page, the book may be too hard. Finally, 53 . Since you know the story well, it’s easier for you.
Hope everyone can read what you love and love what you read!

In spring, some people wear light T-shirts while others are in heavy down coats (羽绒服). It seems that people feel different temperatures on the same day. Why does this happen?
In fact, people don’t feel air temperatures directly. It is through the sensors (传感器) on our skin that we can feel cold, cool, warm, and hot temperatures. They help us decide whether to wear more or fewer clothes.
When our bodies are the same size, how much body fat we have may be different and it will influence how we feel temperatures. The more body fat one has, the warmer he or she feels. This is because the fat under the skin helps keep heat. For example, old people often feel colder than young people as the fat layers (层) under the skin get thinner with age.
Surprisingly, another reason is height. We need blood to move around our bodies to keep us warm. Since most people’s hearts are about the same size, it takes more time and energy for the blood to move around in taller people. So taller people might feel colder.
Metabolism (新陈代谢) also influences how we feel temperatures. It shows how fast our bodies use energy. People with a higher metabolism always feel hotter than others. This is because they produce more heat and may take more time to cool down. For example, people with more muscles (肌肉) often feel warmer.

Therefore, next time you see someone wearing a T-shirt while you’re in a down coat, don’t be so surprised!

53.根据“But some people also show their worries. A teacher said that Chinglish should not be used in situations like in class or at an important work meeting or discussion. It may cause misunderstanding and make others think you’re impolite.”可知也有不同的观点。故填Different。

I’m Patrick McCarthy, feel free to call me Pat. This is the space where I can help with anything you have no idea of, one-on-one. Go ahead and ask! Reply soon once online!

Tina, 14 years old, is a hard-working student.

【答案】50. make smart choices 51. Unsuccessful people/People who can’t succeed/People who can’t be successful 52. they waste time/they don’t use time well/they don’t make full use of time 53. improve themselves
【解析】本文主要讲述了很多人想要成功但大多只注重看起来成功而不做努力,分析了人们不成功的原因,包括只说不做、浪费时间等,强调成功需要努力、良好习惯和合理利用时间,且今天的选择决定未来。

51. 根据“People think that once they’re successful, they’ll have all the time in the world to do whatever they want.…As a result, they stay focused on all the wrong things, and never truly become successful.”以及后面讲述人们不成功的原因可知,这里说不成功的人常犯两种错误,故填Unsuccessful people/People who can’t succeed/be successful。
52. 根据“Another reason is that most of their time is spent on many fun activities like playing computer games or hanging out with friends, while successful people use their time to build good relationships, learn new skills, and work on projects that help them improve.”可知,不成功的人把时间浪费在娱乐活动上,没有好好利用时间,故填they waste time/they don’t use time well/they don’t make full use of time。

你将在英语课上做读书报告,请阅读以下材料,并用自己的语言概括并补全报告。(每空不多于6个单词)

A Report
Hello, everyone! Recently I’ve read an interesting article about 50 .
