Dear friends,
Last month, we started the “Nature and Me” activity. What did you see and do during your time with nature? And how did you feel? Please share your stories.
8:15 p. m. 31 May
I disliked hiking in the past, but now I enjoy it. My father and I had a hiking trip on MacLehose Trail in Hong Kong. The journey was harder than I expected. My legs started burning after just 30 minutes. But as we climbed higher, the amazing views—green hills, golden beaches, and endless ocean—seemed under my feet. There’s an old Chinese saying, “When you climb to the top, all other mountains seem small.” That’s exactly how I felt. Every drop of sweat counts!
8: 17 p. m. 31 May
“I feel free and peaceful.” This was my answer to my friend when she asked me how I felt after an afternoon walk. As we walked through the park, I noticed all those fallen leaves with different shapes and colors lying on the ground. I picked some up and made them into a picture.
You know what they say, “The best thing in life is free.” That’s so true. By walking, I got good exercise. By collecting these little treasures, I started paying attention to all the small things around me that I used to miss. It was like an escape (逃离) from what was troubling me.
During the holiday, my family and I went to Crystal Waterfall. It was amazing! I stood near the falls, hearing the rush of water and feeling the cool mist (水雾). The sound of the water was actually super relaxing. It felt like all my tiredness and worries were being washed away.
Back home, I even downloaded the recordings of waterfalls online. They can help me sleep better!
65. Does Steve like hiking now?
66. What did Lan pick up during the afternoon walk?
67. What have the three people learned in common from their trips?
68. What do you think of their experiences and why? Choose one to reply. (about 30 words)
【答案】65. Yes, he does./Yes. 66. She picked up some fallen leaves. 67. Spending time in nature is good for everyone’s personal growth in body and mind. 68. Hi, Steve. I agree with you! Hiking is a great way to challenge ourselves while enjoying the beauty of nature. Every step forward makes us stronger and more confident in life./Lan, I understand how you felt. When I feel bad, the beauty of nature helps me relax. However, you should focus on the sunny side of life. Don’t think too much./Hey, Janet. Thanks for your sharing, but I don’t agree. Waterfalls are too noisy, and I think the sound would make me uncomfortable. I prefer to relax in quiet places.

Liang Qichao educated his own children well. He set a good example for them and often communicated with them. If there were a talk across time and space, he would advise middle school students like this. Don’t be afraid of the difficulties in life. Never stop learning. You’ll get good results sooner or later. No matter where you go in the world, don’t forget your motherland. You have many chances and can go after your personal dreams anywhere, but you should always keep your homeland in your heart.
It took Qian Xuesen five years to finally return to China from America and ten years to complete the rocket project. Mr. Qian put all his life into the endless outer space as the leader of China’s “Two Bombs and One Satellite” Project. He is known as the “father of China’s space program” and “king of rocket”. Qian Xuesen was so great a scientist, but he never stopped his research. He believed that there was no end to the exploration (探索) of science and truth, and said, “Nothing is final!”
When Yuan Longping was young, he saw lots of Chinese people starving (挨饿). To make sure everyone had enough to eat, he worked in the fields for many years doing experiments. He didn’t stop even when others told him he was wasting his time. Because of his research, China’s rice yields (产量) increased greatly. When hunger was no longer a problem in China, Mr. Yuan still spent all his time out in the experimental fields so that people could live a better life.

①A Teacher’s Diary
April 14
I put Sharla, Tony, and Lee together to make a volcano(火山). I knew they weren’t good friends, and I encouraged all my students to learn to work together.
Something blew up! One looked mad, one looked sad, and one was nearly in tears. They didn’t agree with each other. Oh, dear!
I calmed them down. But they couldn’t agree on even the base for the volcano, and Tony didn’t want to touch the paste(浆糊).
I wondered if I had made a big mistake. Maybe this was one group who couldn’t work together.
②A Student’s Diary
April 16
Yesterday, Mrs. Holt made us stay behind so we could finish planning our volcano. Anyway, we finally moved ahead with our project.
I was making my side smooth. Tony just watched (unfair). I told Lee to smooth out her side, too. “No, Sharla, it should look like a real mountain,” she said just as if she were the boss. The whole thing went downhill. The day ended with no progress.
③The Show Time
The last workday for the project came.
“Is there a problem?” Mrs. Holt knew well there was a problem. She wanted them to put it in their own words, though.
“Well, I think the volcano should be smooth.” Sharla began.
“And,” jumped in Lee, “it should look rocky, like a real mountain.”
“I see. What do you think, Tony?” Mrs. Holt waited.
“Well, I think it would have lava(岩浆) running down.”
“Hey, a great idea!” cut in Sharla, “The lava would be smooth. Right Mrs. Holt?”
Sharla continued. “The other side without lava would look rocky. Right?”
Tony caught on. “So one side can be smooth, and the other rocky. Come on, you guys, let’s go finish!”
It was the show time.________

Desert Control is a huge challenge. In the past, China had much to learn from the rest of the world. But now the shoe is on the other foot. It’s time for China!
A Special Glue
Researchers from Chongqing Jiaotong University develop a special glue to change desert ground into soil that people can grow plants in. The “sand glue” made of plant is used to help keep water, nutrients (营养) and air. And it has been used in different areas.
An Interview in Yulin
(Li has planted more than 2,300 mu of forest.)
Q: Did your family support you when you decided to plant trees?
Li: Not really. My family was strongly against my idea. My son even brought me back home, but the next day I went there again.
Q: Did you have any difficulties?
Li: Yes. At that time, the living conditions in the mountains were really terrible, and I didn’t have any experience. Though I worked more than 10 hours every day, less than 10% of the trees could be alive.
Q: How did you solve the problem?
Li: I bought books and used what I learned to plant trees. I tried again and again. 19 years has passed, and more than 95% of the trees are alive now.
Q: It took you 19 years to plant trees. Any regrets?
Li: No. It’s my dream. And my biggest wish is that everyone plants a few trees every year.

During this year’s Two Sessions (两会), the term “weight management” caught a lot of attention. That’s because the government has carried out a three-year action program called “Weight Management Year”. This program aims to help people understand the importance of controlling the weight to promote (促进) a healthy lifestyle.
Many children and adults have been fighting against obesity (肥胖). According to the report from the National Health Commission, over half of the adults and about 20% of school-aged children in China are overweight. Obesity not only affects appearance but also causes serious health problems. What’s worse, obesity can even bring people psychological problems (心理问题), such as depression (抑郁) and anxiety. So, weight management has become an important part of many people’s lives.
The program includes activities like sports events, healthy eating workshops, and fun challenges. As we all know, the obesity has become a serious problem among teenagers. There is no doubt that both schools and parents play an important role in the weight management. For example, schools can organize different kinds of sports activities during the breaks at school, while parents can encourage the children to do exercise and eat healthily after school. Of course, students are supposed to be responsible for their own weight and health as well. By working together, we can create a healthier young generation.
The government believes that by promoting a healthy lifestyle, we can reduce chronic diseases (慢性病) like high blood pressure, diabetes (糖尿病), and heart problems. The “Weight Management Year” does not mean forcing everyone to lose weight. Instead, it focuses on the scientific management of weight to further improve the overall health of nation. Let’s join together and make ourselves healthier and our nation stronger.
69. Is the weight management necessary for people in their daily life?
70. How long will the weight management program last?
71. If there is an overweight boy in your class, what problems will he probably face?
72. Please come up with at least two suggestions to help teenagers control their weight and explain the reasons.

And he may feel a little shy so that he will have trouble making friends in class. 72. Possible version: Schools are expected to reduce/cut down homework so that the teenagers can have enough time to sleep and exercise. What’s more, teenagers are encouraged to eat a balanced diet with more fruit and vegetables. In this way, teenagers can get much energy for daily life and keep fit. Parents should set a good example to the teenagers and teach the importance of weight management and know more knowledge about nutrition (营养). Because actions speak louder than words.

This change aims to reduce the heavy study pressure that students have faced for years. Before the policy, many students in provinces like Hebei only had one day or even half a day to rest each week. Now, schools are required to cancel all weekend classes and exams, allowing students to relax or explore personal interests.
According to the new rules, teachers cannot give extra (额外的) homework during weekends, but schools must keep libraries and sports fields open for students who wish to study or exercise voluntarily (自愿地). In cities like Changsha and Hangzhou, some schools have even started organizing weekend activities such as science clubs, art workshops, and community service programs.
Most students welcome the policy. “I finally have time to play basketball and read novels,” said Li Ming, a 16-ycar-old student. “I feel less tired and more focused during weekdays.” Studies also show that students who get enough rest perform better in exams. For example, a high school in Zhejiang reported a 15% improvement in average test scores after carrying out the policy.
However. some parents still worry. “Weekends used to be important for reviewing lessons. I’m afraid my child will fall behind,” said a parent. Rural (农村的) areas face bigger challenges. In villages where educational resources are limited, students have fewer chances to take part in afterschool activities. To solve this, the government has created free online learning platforms and encouraged urban (城市的) schools to share resources with rural ones.
Many teachers believe this policy marks a turning point in China’s education. It brings both benefits (好处) and challenges to students. They suggest that ________________.

The Plains-wanderer is an endangered small bird that lives in Australia’s grasslands. Not just any grasslands. Plains-wanderers are picky. There can’t be too much grass or too little. For this reason, scientists sometimes call them the “Goldilocks” of animals.
Zoos Victoria says, “There is no bird like it in the world.” In fact, scientists have put the species into a “family” all by itself, since there are no other similar birds.
The little birds are only about six inches tall. They’re not good at flying, so they spend most of their time on the ground. When they feel themselves in danger, they crouch down to hide. Normally, they choose to run away rather than fly.
To protect these endangered birds, scientists first had to learn where they were. So Zoos Victoria worked with Queensland University of Technology on a plan to locate (定位) the birds. Since Plains-wanderers are hard to see, the team chose to “listen” for the birds instead.
Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual “Ooom” call, and this was the key to locating them. The researchers set up 35 special recording tools called “song meters” in nine different grassy areas where Plains-wanderers could possibly have been. Song meters record all the sounds made in an area over a long period of time.
The song meters collected tens of thousands of hours of recordings—far more than humans could analyze (分析). So the researchers fed the recordings to an AI system (系统) trained to identify (鉴别) the calls of Plains-wanderers.
The AI system discovered Plains-wanderer calls coming from two of the places. The scientists double-checked and found that the AI system was correct. ________
41. Do Plains-wanderers live in the grasslands in Africa?
42. How tall are Plains-wanderers?
43. How did the researchers locate the Plains-wanderers?
44. Please fill in the blank to complete the last paragraph. (About 30 words)
【答案】41. No, they don’t. 42. They are (only) about six inches tall./(Only) about six inches tall. 43. Studying Abroad: A Decision to Be Made with Care
Studying abroad is a popular choice of many students for their future plans. However, in recent years, an increasing number of people have started to think about it rationally (理性地).
Studying abroad can open up new chances for students. However, there is still a lot they need to face.
When abroad, they may feel uncomfortable, confused or even upset because they find the local culture quite different from theirs at home. For example, a student might find that people in the new country have different table manners, celebrate different holidays, or have different ideas about what is polite or impolite.
If the student is not fluent (流利) in the language spoken in the new country, they might find it difficult to communicate effectively with others. This can make simple tasks, like shopping or asking for directions, quite challenging.
—Wang Li (mother of twin girls)
Studying overseas can be an exciting adventure for many students, but it often comes with a high price tag (标签). When a student decides to further his education in another country, he must prepare to face the problem—it may be a huge burden (负担) for the family. It includes not just the money they pay for classes, known as tuition fees, but also that they need to pay for the day-to-day living such as food, housing, and transportation.
For example, David, the son of my boss, is now studying in England. He spends a surprising amount of money covering both his education and living. It costs him about 40,000 pounds in total each year! It might not be affordable for everyone.
It’s of great importance for students and their families to carefully think about it before deciding to study abroad.
—Zhang Yi (father of one boy)
(A talk between two teenagers, Vivian and Gina)
Vivian: Hey! I heard you were thinking about studying in America. Is that true?
Gina: Yeah, I’ve always dreamed of it. But recently, I’m not so sure.
Vivian: Why the change? I thought you were a big fan of American culture.
Gina: Well, but is it necessary for me to go abroad if I want to be a teacher in the future?
Vivian: That’s a good question. I never thought about it like that.
Gina: Studying abroad is a big decision. I have to think it through carefully.
41. Can studying abroad open up new chances for students?
42. How much does David spend on education and living every year?
43. According to the passage, what do people consider before deciding to study abroad?
44. Suppose you are Gina. Will you study abroad? Please explain. (About 30 words)

At Xujia village in Fuzhou, Fujian province, an camphor tree stands proudly. Now over 100 years old, like a huge umbrella, it has offered a place for people to relax. However, the tree faced a great challenge around two years ago.
In January 2023, workers tried to move the camphor tree to clear space for a new project.
Their carelessness cost the tree all its leaves and branches.
Locals were shocked. Luckily, they knew where to turn for help. They found Zheng Shuhong, a deputy to the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Congress (福州市人大代表), who was responsible for environmental protection. To solve the problem, Zheng with two other deputies reported the problem to the local government and successfully stopped the project.
In a follow-up study, the deputies found that the ancient tree was not protected by any law. So the deputies wrote their suggestions into a report and sent it to the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Congress.
On March 15, 2025, China introduced its first national level rules to protect ancient trees. The new rules contribute a lot to the protection of ancient trees. They consider all trees over 100 years old as ancient. And they make them known to people around. Besides, after finding these trees, experts will go to check them and watch over each tree’s growth, with special signs placed nearby. What’s more, each tree will have a “tree keeper” to look after it every day. Now, about10, 000 ancient trees across Fuzhou are protected almost 10 times more than before.
The camphor tree in Xujia village stands taller than ever, its branches once again stretching like a protective umbrella over the community.
41. Is the camphor tree an ancient tree?
42. Why did the workers try to move the camphor tree?
43. How do the rules help the ancient trees?
44. Why do you think ancient trees need special protection? Give reasons. (at least 30 words)
【答案】41. Yes, it is. 42. To clear space for a new project. 43. The rules identify ancient trees, raise public awareness, arrange expert checks, place special signs, and assign daily caretakers. 44. Ancient trees need special protection because they have historical and ecological value, representing natural heritage. Their loss would be irreversible, as seen in the camphor tree’s damage. Proper care ensures their survival for future generations.

Nowadays, many young people like to “enjoy life” even if they can’t truly afford it, like having a very expensive dinner to make themselves feel good. Here are some students’ opinions about this kind of lifestyle.
Some people think this lifestyle is bad because it doesn’t consider the future. But I think it shows that people choose to enjoy life and stay happy, even when things aren’t going very well. Doing small things like drinking milk tea after a test can help them feel better. These moments of joy help them face new challenges. After all, isn’t finding light in the darkness a form of wisdom?
Shen Juan, a 16-year-old girl
I think short-lived happiness may stop us from working hard. If we only do what makes us happy, it may be hard to achieve anything meaningful. Instead of chasing short-lived happiness, we should learn from older people: to work hard, set long-term goals and make plans for the future. We need to face difficulties with courage and take on the responsibilities that come with being a young person today.
Wang Jun, a 15-year-old boy
Because of social media (社交媒体) and some other pressure, people often feel they need to buy expensive things, which can cause money problems. I believe that real happiness lies not in the richness of belongings, but in the simple life. Instead of spending money on things that don’t last, young people should focus on learning new skills and building strong relationships. This way, they can have a happy life that lasts a long time.
Peng Sitong, a 16-year-old girl
Young people today are under a lot of pressure. It’s important for them to find ways to relax and protect their mental (心理) health. Even if they don’t have much money, they can still manage to meet their needs to feel happier. Every generation faces different challenges. For older people, their problem used to be not having enough food or clothing. But for young people today, most of them don’t have such a problem.
Li Siyi, a 15-year-old boy
41. Does Shen Juan agree with this kind of lifestyle?
42. What does Li Siyi think it’s important for young people today?
43. What are the similarities between Wang Jun’s and Peng Sitong’s opinions?
44. Do you think young people should enjoy life now even if they don’t have enough money? Explain at least two reasons. (about 30 words)
【答案】41. Yes, she does./Yes. 42. He thinks it’s important for them to find ways to relax and protect their mental health. 43. Mind Your Weight!
How many adults will be overweight in China by 2050? About 640 million. Now China is facing a serious public health challenge-obesity (肥胖症).
What causes obesity? Experts explain it’s a mix of genes (基因), unhealthy lifestyles and even stress. For example, office workers often face the problem of “overwork obesity” because of long hours and little time for exercise.
The government is calling on everyone to join the “Weight Management Year” plan. The plan will set up “weight control clinics (诊所) ” across the country. Doctors will give advice on weight control. Schools are encouraged to teach kids about healthy eating.
The goal of this plan is to build a healthier China. As the experts say, “Losing weight isn’t just about look—it’s about health!”
(An interview with an expert in health) Reporter: Dr. Li, how can we control weight?
Dr. Li: A healthy lifestyle is very necessary. To start with, keep a balanced diet. Eat more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains (全麦). Then, exercise and a healthy sleeping habit also play important roles.
Reporter: Any other tips?
Dr. Li: Many people lose weight fast in the first few days but regain it later-this is the “yo-yo” effect. Making plans is easy, but sticking to them is the key that matters most.
Reporter: Thanks for your advice!

The Doctrine of the Mean is called “Zhong Yong” in Chinese. It teaches people to avoid extremes (极端) and find a balance in their thoughts and actions.
This idea doesn’t mean staying in the middle all the time. Instead, it means making wise choices that fit each situation. For example, working too hard without breaks is bad, but being lazy isn’t helpful either. It also says we should manage our feelings — neither getting too angry nor hiding our feelings completely.
For thousands of years, it has helped Chinese create a peaceful society by encouraging people to avoid extremes and find solutions.
(Aristotle places a chessboard on the table.)
Aristotle (亚里士多德): A good king balances two things: kindness and strength. Look at these chess pieces (棋子).
Alexander (亚历山大): White chess pieces mean kindness, black ones mean strength? But why mix them? A king should be strong!
Aristotle: Too much white, people think you’re weak. Too much black? People will live in fear.
Alexander: I see...
Aristotle: It’s called Golden Mean (黄金中立). Use it to rule if you become the king one day. It should be also used through your whole life. Work but also rest, and show your feelings but not all.
(Alexander followed the advice and later he became one of the greatest kings in history. And the idea of Golden Mean had a great influence on the Western society.)
Nowadays, the idea of “45° Life” influences many people’s lifestyles in our society. It describes a position between “neijuan” and “tangping”. 0°means total laziness, and 90°means extreme stress. At 45°, people aim to balance between work and rest.
In an interview, some people expressed their opinions about it.
Liu Jian, a young man who works in a big company, said, “I choose to have a 90° life. Doing nothing and just lying down are a waste of life.”
Xiang Ping is a mother of two children. She said, “It could be 90°, 45°or even 0°. It depends on what kind of life you would like to live. No one can really decide it for you.”
Coco also shared her opinion, “As a middle school student, I choose _________, because __________.”
41. Does “The Doctrine of the Mean” mean staying in the middle all the time?
42. According to the conversation of Aristotle and Alexander, what do the white chess pieces mean?
43. What do the three ideas “The Doctrine of the Mean”, “Golden Mean” and “45° Life” have in common?
44. Finish the missing part in the last paragraph.

I don’t want to waste time; instead, I should spend it exploring various new experiences./I choose to have a 45° life, because balancing study and personal time is important. I need to find the most efficient learning methods so that I can save free time for rest and hobbies. Through this balance, I aim to become a wise person who can make thoughtful choices for my future./I choose to have a 0° life, because most students are trapped in busy routines.

65. Did Liang Qichao educate his own children well?
66. How long did it take Qian Xuesen to finally return to China from America?

The Past and the Present
Nearly 30 years ago, the Kubuqi Desert, the seventh largest desert in China, was a barren (贫瘠的) land with no future. The local people called the Kubuqi Desert the “sea of death”.
Thanks to our government, chances came. The Kubuqi people have changed the desert into an oasis (绿洲). It has offered chances for the locals to get more money in different ways like selling farm products. They change the desert and the desert helps them. It’s a win-win situation.

Wukong. Tiangong. Tianwen. Yutu. Do you know where the names of Chinese space programs come from?
Wukong, the Dark Matter Particle Explorer satellite (暗物质粒子探测卫星), is named after Chinese superhero Monkey King. According to Journey to the west, Monkey King has a pair of sharp eyes which can tell the difference between good and cvil. The Wukong satellite is just as sharp-eyed as Monkey King to help scientists search for dark matter in space.
The name of the space station, Tiangong, means “Heavenly Palace”. In Chinese myths (神话), this is the home of Tian Di. Now Tiangong Space Station is a home and workplace for Chinese astronauts in space. Astronauts can live and work happily in it. And China welcomes foreign astronauts to Tiangong in order that they can work together.
Tianwen, China’s Mars missions (任务), gets its name from the poem Tianwen by Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan is a well-known poet from ancient China. In Tianwen, he had the questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the real world, showing his hunger for truth. Perhaps the Tianwen missions will end up answering some of Qu Yuan’s questions.

①Most Chinese students are familiar with Li Hua. In English exams, they often need to write a letter to a foreign friend in the name of Li Hua. He has been with Chinese students for quite a long time. However, over the past years, changes have taken place in China’s English education.
②Chinese students used to start learning English in middle school. Tian Lijun, born in the 1970 s, first learned English in Grade 7. “We spent the whole term learning English letters and easy words, and then, I didn’t realize we would finally use those words to write sentences,” said Tian. Later, English education began earlier. Wang Mengqi, born in the 1990 s, started learning English before primary school. She said, “In kindergarten (幼儿园), we had cute English textbooks with colorful pictures. Really interesting.”
③The learning condition has changed too. Teachers used blackboards in the 1980 s and 1990 s. Now students practice English listening and speaking through all kinds of multimedia tools, including computers, pads, and educational apps. For example, AI-powered apps like “ELSA Speak” can check their pronunciation quickly and help them speak more clearly. Some apps can even adjust (适应) to students’ learning speed, making personalized practice possible anytime, anywhere.
④Another change is about English writing. In the past, students often wrote a letter to his foreign friend to ask about local weather or culture before going abroad in the name of Li Hua. Now, however, “Li Hua” often tells Chinese stories to his foreign friends. What’s more, he also helps them solve problems, such as giving suggestions on how to deal with stress before exams or the ways to improve relationship with parents. This change shows _____________________

In February 2025, China introduced a nationwide policy to give high school students two full days off every weekend.

What is BMI? It uses height and weight to see whether you are overweight or not.
Cities like Beijing and Shanghai have included BMI in the PE test for the Zhongkao. Tangshan, a student from Beijing improved his BMI by exercising and eating healthily. He believes BMI helps him stay energetic. However, Chenfei thinks BM night cause worries, especially for underweight students. Still, many agree it makes people aware of the importance of health.
