I was a mid-year replacement (替补) teacher. The previous (之前的) teacher said he could no longer teach these children and 12 the job during the holiday break. 13 I walked into the room, I understood why he left.
I sat down quietly in my chair and began reading their names softly. I then put up a mirror on the wall 14 the blackboard and began writing my name and a reading task on the blackboard. Finishing a marathon (马拉松)—a 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometer) race—is always special. But the marathon that Hilde Dosogne finished on December 31, 2024 was super-special: it was the 11 of the 366 marathons she had run in 2024.

She ran in all kinds of weather. She caught flu and COVID. And she got lots of blisters (水疱). Once, she fell two-thirds of the way through a marathon and hurt her finger. When she got out of the hospital that day, she ran 16 new marathon, rather than completing the one she had started.
She says the running was hard on her 17 , but that remaining strong-minded to keep going was even harder. “I’m glad it’s over,” she said at the end of the final race. Dosogne was asked if she would 18 anyone else to try it. “I wouldn’t. Certainly not. It’s not for everybody”, she replied. “I don’t think I will do anything crazier than this.”
But that doesn’t mean she’s 19 running. In September, she’s planning on running a 153-mile (246-kilometer) race in Greece. It is a small challenge compared to what she achieved last year, but it proves that her love for running remains 20 .

Three years ago, my husband and I started the “Farm Camp” program. We wanted city kids to experience what we had enjoyed and learned on our family farm. We 11 one or two families at a time. Most of them stayed for a week.
There is a lot to learn. For example, I don’t expect a child to know 12 eggs become chicks. But I’m surprised when they don’t know how to climb over a gate.
Don’t get me wrong. I love teaching kids. It’s just these basic skills used to be 13 knowledge. City kids today 14 have the chance to touch real tools and do hard work. It’s understandable that parents don’t want their children to 15 from these unpleasant experiences. The problem is, when they do, something is lost.
Farm life also teaches serious lessons. At first, I avoided talking about 16 . But my own daughter (now 20) had faced the death of 17 favorite farm animals and survived. I realized that Farm Camp kids could too. Now I’d just tell them that the pigs will end up 18 meat.
Farms can also be 19 . We’ve never had a serious accident, but many kids have been bitten by bees or kicked to the ground by a horse. Although it might hurt, most children don’t even cry a bit. They’re stronger than we think.
I was worried my young visitors would feel bored with the simple chores. But to my 20 they find the chores fun. Maybe what they really find here is a connection to nature that cities can’t offer. When they come for return visits, they always ask me, “When do we get to clean the chicken’s house?”
