One year ago, Melanie Griffith’s life was changed forever. The then 20-year old sports lover suffered a serious accident in a motocross race that left her paralyzed (瘫痪).
Most of us couldn’t bear to think how we would deal with that, but Griffith faced it bravely and decided to make the best of her new life situations. She said, “I just got straight back into sport that helped me get so much stronger and take my mind off everything about the accident.”
In the past year, Griffith has played basketball, wheelchair football, wheelchair tennis, and badminton, all to a very high level. She was a naturally sporty person, so those who know her best haven’t been surprised by the way she has taken. But they have been amazed by just how positive Griffith has been. “Obviously, my family were very sad after I had my accident,” she says. “But when they see how I’ve met the challenge by taking part in sport, they are really happy for me.”
Last June, Griffith was part of the Irish team to Scotland for the Wheelchair Rugby League Celtic Cup and in her very first match against Wales scored a try with her first touch of the ball. “That was amazing,” she says. “I was so proud to be actually representing Ireland and singing the national anthem (国歌) here.”
Returning from the competition, Griffith plans to turn her eyes back to her studies. After her accident, she took a year out from her degree in Microbiology in Trinity College, but will return soon to complete the remaining two years and plans to combine wheelchair basketball and hurling with her degree.
Griffith said, “I didn’t say no to any of the opportunities that were presented to me and I never want to give up, so I expect my experience to encourage more people like me.”
4. What does Griffith say about sport?
A. It is a way to make a living for her. B. It proves her sporty characteristic.
C. It makes her independent of her family. D. It helps stop thinking of the accident.
5. What do we know about Griffith before the accident?
A. She showed great interest in sports. B. She focused on disabled sports.
C. She let her family down many times. D. She surprised people knowing her best.
6. What does Griffith plan to do in the coming future?
A. Drop out of college. B. Promote wheelchair basketball.
C. Go back to complete her study. D. Compete in matches for her country.
7. Which words can best describe Griffith?
A. Courageous and honest. B. Outgoing and humorous.
C. Determined and inspiring. D. Hardworking and polite.

Age-related macular degeneration (A.M.D.老年性黄斑变性) is the main cause of blindness among older people. It influences the macula, the part of the eye that lets you see in detail. The disease makes seeing less and less clear and in time leads to blindness.
One study found that cigarette smokers were almost two times as likely to develop A.M.D. as people who did not smoke. Researchers from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary organized the study.
The study surveyed men with twin brothers, almost seven hundred people. The average age was about seventy-five. The men were asked questions about their diet and history of cigarette smoking, drinking and physical activity. Some of the men already had A.M.D.
The study found that the men who ate more fish, even those who smoked cigarettes, were less likely to develop A.M.D. Those who ate more than two meals a week containing fish were the least likely to develop the disease.
A second study found that people who ate at least one meal containing fish each week were forty percent less likely to develop A.M.D. Researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia studied information on almost three thousand people. Each person was forty-nine years of age or older. They were asked about their diet and medical history, and then tested for the disease after five years.
The results of both studies have not yet been confirmed. But they do show a possible link between eating fish and prevention of A.M.D.
8. What can we learn about macula?
A. It’s a part of the eye. B. It is an eye disease.
C. It results from blindness. D. It helps prevent A.M.D.
9. How did the researchers carry out the first study?
A. By giving interviews. B. By doing tests.
C. By conducting surveys. D. By collecting data.
10. What did the second study focus on?
A. The disadvantages of drinking.
B. The number of the research targets.
C. The differences between twin brothers.
D. The link between eating fish and developing A.M.D.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Do People Become Blind. B. More Fish, Less Cigarettes.
C. Cigarettes and A.M.D. D. Blindness Among Older People.
D
Malleefowl (眼斑冢雉) are Australian birds, which are good at staying hidden from all other creatures in their range. But even so, the presence of wild cats and foxes has greatly influenced their survival and reproduction strategy, and the survival rate of Malleefowl chicks is less than 2% in the wild. There are only 25,000 Malleefowl left in Australia.
In the winter, males select a place of about 3 square yards typically in the shade of the mallee tree to build a nesting mound (土堆) by removing sandy soil backwards with their feet. They will dig about 3 feet deep, and then spend the rest of the winter collecting organic material around the place until they have a mound that can be as tall as 2 feet.
For the past three years, farmers living and working in the Rankins Springs area, near West Wyalong have been collecting eggs from the birds’ nesting mounds and moving them to a special incubation facility (孵化设施) for release into a wild-free enclosed environment.
The plan was organized by an Australian wildlife champion, Mal Carnegie, who founded the Lake Cowal Foundation to protect the unique ecosystem around that lake. Now working on behalf of the Malleefowl, he said that 10 baby birds have been discovered on cameras in the 140-acre (60-hectare) enclosure. “Once the chicks come out of the mound they are on their own. Although they are well adapted, there are predators like foxes and cats,” he said regarding the species’ low survival rate. “The average survival rate of chicks up to 12 months of age in the wild is very low.” Through catching and releasing programme, they’ve managed to increase the possibility of reaching maturity (成年) greatly.
Interestingly, before the farmers took part in the species’ protection, this exact strategy had proven an unsuccessful one in the past. “They didn’t have a great deal of success but we have just put a bit of farmer logic (逻辑) into the whole process of incubation and releasing,” one farmer named Rodney Guest told ABC. “We are really over the moon with what we have achieved.”
12. What caused the low survival rate of Malleefowl?
A. Polluted environment. B. Destroyed homeland.
C. Attacks from wild cats and foxes. D. People’s hunting.
13. What contributes to the success of Malleefowl’s survival?
A. Volunteers’ participation. B. Farmers’ action.
C. Scientists’ research. D. The government’s rule.
14. What does the underlined word “predators” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Protectors. B. Killers. C. Survivors. D. Competitors.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Farmers took part in the whole process of protecting Malleefowl.
B. Farmers’ logic was not effective for the incubation and releasing.
C. The strategy of the species’ protection didn’t meet with any difficulty.
D. Rodney Guest was excited and satisfied with the success of protection.

In the summer of 1971, Betsy Cornwell was 18 years old and had a job working the late shift at a computer fitting shop in Marlborough, Mass.
One night, she finished work and went out to her car as usual — only to find herself trapped when her key broke off in the ignition (点火装置). “If you’ve ever worked that 3 p. m. to midnight shift, you know how fast a parking lot can empty out,” Cornwell said. “So there I was, in the middle of the night, all by myself, with half of the key in my hand and the other half in the ignition.”
As she sat there, wondering what to do next, she heard a tap on her window. Outside stood a man. “He said, ‘I noticed you haven’t gone anywhere. Are you OK?’ And I showed him my broken car key and his eyes lit up and he said, ‘I can help with that. I was a car repairman.’”
But Cornwell had never seen him before. Noticing Cornwell’s hesitation, the man took out his driver’s license, told her his full name and said, “I can start your car for you, but I would have to follow you home because if you hit a pot hole, you might shut down and I’d have to start the car again.”
A feeling of anxiety washed over Cornwell. She told the man that she needed to call her father. Together, they walked to a nearby payphone. When Cornwell’s father answered, she explained the situation and told him the man’s name. To her surprise, her father told her to go ahead and let the man start the car.
“I’m thinking, like, ‘Is he just too asleep to understand what I’m telling him?’ So I said, ‘Dad, I don’t even know the guy.’ And Dad says, ‘Yeah, sure, sure. I know when to expect you, and it’ll be fine.’”

The results of both studies have not yet been confirmed But they do show a possible link between eating fish and prevention of A.M.D.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B

Interestingly before the farmers took part in the species’ protection, this exact strategy had proven an unsuccessful one in the past.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. D

【答案】Dear Richard,
How’s everything going? I can’t wait to tell you about the fascinating handicraft class we had last Friday.
We made clay figurines, and I shaped mine into a panda holding a bamboo branch. Though it looked a bit clumsy, I was so proud of it! This class not only let me relax but also taught me patience and creativity. I realised that handicrafts blend art with culture, making them truly special.
Have you had any interesting classes recently? Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】After hanging up, Cornell and the man returned to her car. He started it faster than she could have with her key. Cornell told him where she lived. Then, he got in his car, and began following her home. But by this point, Cornell was so upset. She couldn’t remember which way to turn when she got off the highway. So she made a U turn and went the other way and that way didn’t look any better. Then the man flashed his lights at her, and started to take the lead.
The man led her all the way to her driveway and turned off the car for her. Seeing Dad standing by the driveway waiting, Cornell heaved a sigh of relief. Surprisingly, as soon as Cornell’s father saw them, he walked towards the man and called out his name. It turned out that they had known each other for a long time, but lost contact for various reasons. Cornell’s father said that when he heard the man’s full name, he was convinced that he must be his old friend, as warm-hearted and kind as ever. Two long lost good friends were reunited through this act of kindness.
