M: I’m quite often asked how I became a dress designer. For me, it was something I always wanted to do. However, because my mother was a university teacher and my father a doctor, they found it hard to accept that designing clothes could be a serious job. Anyway, they said I had to do a year’s business course first after high school. I didn’t like it at the time, but later, it made a big difference to me. And the other thing I did during that year was to get a part-time job in the office of a small factory making good quality clothes. Then I did two years at the local art college. I wanted to go to London straight away, but my parents insisted. So I stayed at home until I won a prize for a design which actually gave me a place at a London college for nine months. I went on to spend three wonderful years in Milan. Then I got the job in New York for a year, which was really exciting, but unbelievably stressful. I think it is probably because I was too far away from my family and missed them very much. So, I ended up in London, starting my own company.

B
When I was little, my dad would let me sit beside him while he painted. He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the grassland by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sunlight going through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.
I understood what he was saying, but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree (梧桐树) to rescue a kite stuck in the branches.
It was a long way up, but I thought I’d give it a try. I started climbing. Then I looked down. And suddenly I got dizzy and weak. But the kite was still beyond my reach. I caught my breath and forced myself to concentrate on the kite as I climbed up. When I had the kite free, I needed a minute to rest. That’s when the fear began to disappear, and in its place came the most amazing feeling that I was flying, sailing among the clouds. Then I began to notice how wonderful the light wind smelled. I couldn’t stop breathing it in, filling my lungs with the sweetest smell I’d ever known.
I never got over the view. I kept thinking of what it felt like to be up so high in that tree. I wanted to see it, to feel it, again. And again! It wasn’t long before I wasn’t afraid of being up so high and found the same spot. I could sit there for hours, just looking out at the world. Sunsets were amazing: Some days they’d be purple and pink; some days they’d be bright orange, setting fire to clouds across the horizon.
The view from my sycamore was more than clouds and wind and colors combined. Eventually, my father’s belief moved from my head to my heart. I started marveling (惊奇) at how that was possible. How could I be so full of peace and full of wonder? It was magic.
24. What was the reason for the author climbing up the sycamore tree?
A. Playing in the tree. B. Getting a trapped kite.
C. Proving her courage. D. Practicing climbing skills.
25. What can we say about the author’s climbing experience?
A. Adventurous but rewarding. B. Unusual but painful.
C. Well-planned and interesting. D. Competitive and imaginative.
26. What can we conclude from the text?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. Positive action leads to happiness.
D. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
27. Which is the suitable title for the text?
A. The Last Memory B. Father’s Best Suggestion
C. Up in the Sycamore Tree D. Clouds Across the Horizon
B 25. A 26. D 27. C
根据第二段中“I understood what he was saying, but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree (梧桐树) to rescue a kite stuck in the branches.(我明白他在说什么,但直到有一天,当我在梧桐树上营救一只卡在树枝上的风筝时,我才真正感受到他的意思)”可知,作者爬梧桐树是为了取回被卡住的风筝。
根据第三段中的“And suddenly I got dizzy and weak. I couldn’t stop breathing it in, filling my lungs with the sweetest smell I’d ever known.(突然间,我感到头晕目眩、浑身无力。但风筝仍然在我够不着的地方。我深吸一口气,强迫自己集中精力继续向上爬去够风筝。当我终于把风筝解救出来时,我需要休息一会儿。就在这时,恐惧开始消散,取而代之的是一种奇妙的感觉——我仿佛在飞翔,在云朵间穿梭。接着,我开始注意到微风中弥漫着多么美妙的气息。我忍不住不停地深呼吸,让那股我所闻过的最甜美的气息充满我的肺腑)”以及第四段的“I could sit there for hours, just looking out at the world. Sunsets were amazing: Some days they’d be purple and pink; some days they’d be bright orange, setting fire to clouds across the horizon.(我可以坐在那里几个小时,只是看着外面的世界。日落是惊人的:有时它们会是紫色和粉红色的;有时候,它们会变成亮橙色,点燃地平线上的云朵)”可知,作者在爬树过程中经历了恐惧,但最终成功取下风筝并感受到了前所未有的平静和惊奇,还欣赏到了美丽的日落景色。由此可推断,作者的爬树经历虽然冒险但很有收获。故选A。
根据第一段中的“He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the grassland by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sunlight going through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.(他会告诉我,牛本身就是牛,草原本身就是草和花,穿过树木的阳光只是一束光,但把它们放在一起,你就有了魔法)”和最后一段“Eventually, my father’s belief moved from my head to my heart.(最终,我父亲的信仰从我的脑海转移到了我的心中)”可知,作者在爬上梧桐树后体验到了父亲所说的“魔法”,即各个部分组合在一起所产生的整体效果远大于部分之和。
C
According to Dr. John Swaddle, a professor at the Institute for Integrative Conservation at William & Mary, hundreds of millions of birds die every year from window collisions (碰撞).
However, if you put decals (贴花纸) or colorful stickers outside of your windows, the birds are more likely to see the barrier and therefore avoid it. Remember: never inside your window; always outside of your window.
“Double-glazed (双层的) windows reflect a lot of light, especially when you view them from a slight angle, as a flying bird would do,” Swaddle told Salon. He is the corresponding author of a recent study which tries to figure out how this basic reality of physics impacts on a bird’s experience as it flies near a standard window. For their experiment, researchers had birds perform repeated and controlled flight trials near windows with film(薄膜) products, BirdShades film and Haverkamp film, respectively.
“In our collision avoidance trials, BirdShades increased window avoidance by 47% and the Haverkamp increased avoidance by 39%. But neither product was effective when the films s were applied to the internal surface of windows,” the authors concluded.
When breaking down the problem of avoiding window collisions from a bird’s point of view, Swaddle explained, “The light and reflected imagery from the external surface of the glass is sufficient to obscure a film or decal that is stuck to the inner surface from being seen clearly.”
If you want to protect birds from easily avoidable deaths without buying window film products, there are other solutions. Swaddle recommended “pleasing fritted glass that could be used in new construction and which is also bird-friendly”. Besides, he notes that screens can be helpful as well, not only by limiting reflectiveness but by providing birds with a cushion if they make impact. It is also possible to use everyday household objects to signal to birds that there are barriers — netting, bits of string, colorful stickers, and paint. These can all be used to this effect.
28. What can be done to reduce bird window collisions?
A. Choosing double-glazed windows.
B. Avoiding opening windows at night.
C. Sticking decals to the outside of windows.
D. Covering the inner side of windows with decals.
29. What did the researchers want to find in the experiment?
A. The bird-friendly film products and glass.
B. The efficient measures of collision avoidance.
C. The bird behaviors when hitting the bright window.
D. The link between light reflection and bird window collisions.
30. What does the underlined word “obscure” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Use. B. Shade. C. Find. D. Protect.
31. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. Other ways to help birds avoid collisions. B. Bird-friendly objects to attract birds.
C. Solutions to reducing the window cost. D. Environmentally friendly glass products.
C 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据第二段中“However, if you put decals (贴花纸) or colorful stickers outside of your windows, the birds are more likely to see the barrier and therefore avoid it.(然而,如果你窗户外面贴上贴纸或彩色贴纸,鸟儿更有可能看到障碍物,从而避开它)”可知,在窗外贴上贴纸或彩色贴纸,鸟类更有可能看到障碍物,从而避开障碍物。
根据第三段中“He is the corresponding author of a recent study which tries to figure out how this basic reality of physics impacts on a bird’s experience as it flies near a standard window.(他是最近一项研究的通讯作者,该研究试图弄清楚这一基本的物理现实如何影响鸟在标准窗户附近飞行时的体验)”可知,研究人员做此次实验是想弄清物理现象是如何影响鸟类在靠近标准窗户时的体验的,也就是光的反射和鸟类撞窗之间的联系。
根据第五段中“When breaking down the problem of avoiding window collisions from a bird’s point of view, Swaddle explained, “The light and reflected imagery from the external surface of the glass is sufficient to obscure a film or decal that is stuck to the inner surface from being seen clearly.(当从鸟类的角度分析避免窗户碰撞的问题时,Swaddle解释说:“玻璃外表面的光线和反射图像足以obscure粘在内表面的薄膜或贴纸)”可知,玻璃外表面的光线和反射图像使得看不清粘在内表面的薄膜或贴花了,所以应该是遮挡住了粘在内表面的薄膜或贴花,所以obscure的意思应该是“遮挡”。故选B。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“If you want to protect birds from easily avoidable deaths without buying window film products, there are other solutions.(如果你想在不购买窗膜产品的情况下保护鸟类免受容易避免的死亡,还有其他解决方案)”可知,最后一段主要讲述了除了购买窗户薄膜产品外,还有其他帮助鸟类避免碰撞的方法。故选A。

A daily multivitamin and mineral supplement (补充物) may reduce cognitive (认知的) decline in older people, according to a US study that is the first to demonstrate that they may benefit ageing brain function.
The trial, involving more than 2,200 over-65s, suggests daily supplements may slow cognitive decline by about 60%, or nearly two years, with the most substantial effects seen in older people with a history of heart attack.
While experts in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia (痴呆症) are encouraged by the findings, they say larger studies are needed to confirm the effect before recommending daily multivitamins to protect older people from cognitive decline.
“We provide the first evidence in a long-term trial of older women and men that daily use of a safe multivitamin-mineral can improve cognition,” the researchers wrote in Alzheimer’s and Dementia, the journal of the Chicago-based Alzheimer’s Association. “This finding could have important public health indications for brain health and resistance to future cognitive decline.”
Researchers at Wake Forest University in North Carolina and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston investigated whether a daily cocoa extract or multivitamins with minerals improved memory and other mental tasks in 2,262 older people. The researchers rated participants’ “global cognition” before and during the three-year trial through tests involving word lists, number problems, verbal fluency and story recall.
Cocoa extract is rich in substances called flavanols and past research suggested they might benefit brain function. The latest trial found daily cocoa supplements made no difference to cognitive performance.
Daily multivitamin-mineral supplements, however, appeared to improve cognitive scores, in particular for those with heart attack. The results suggest “either greater relative improvement or more protection from cognitive decline”, the authors wrote.
Prof Laura Baker, co-principal investigator on the Cosmos study at Wake Forest University, said: “While these initial findings are promising, additional research is needed in a larger and more diverse group of people. Also, we still have work to do to better understand why the multivitamin might benefit cognition in older adults.”
32. What does the US study show according to the passage?
A. Elderly people suffer from cognitive decline.
B. Cognitive decline leads to worse brain function.
C. Seniors get heart attack due to cognitive decline.
D. Multivitamins and minerals help to slow cognitive decline.
33. What can we know about the participants in the trial?
A. They improved memory and other mental tasks after the trial.
B They took tests like word lists and number problems for two years.
C. They improved cognitive performance greatly after taking cocoa extract.
D. They boosted cognitive scores after taking multivitamins and minerals.
34. How do the researchers mainly conduct the study?
A. By comparing different groups.
B. By summarizing historical reports.
C. By filling up questionnaires.
D. By examining medical records.
35. Which statement will Prof Laura Baker probably agree with?
A. The findings turn out to be of little significance to older adults.
B. It is clear why multivitamins reduce cognitive decline.
C. Further study should be conducted in a larger population.
D. There is an urgent need to recommend multivitamins to the old.
D 33. D 34. A 35. C

空前“Are they all similar in age to you? (他们的年龄都和你一样吗?)”提到你的朋友是否都与你年龄相仿,空后“But you can widen your social circle and gain life-enriching benefits by becoming friends with someone younger or older than you.(但是你可以通过和比你年轻或年长的人成为朋友来扩大你的社交圈并获得丰富生活的好处。)”
2. 空前“They have been young parents, have survived a job loss, and can help you get through these changes in your own life.(他们是年轻的父母,在失业中幸存下来,可以帮助你度过生活中的这些变化。)”提到年长的朋友能帮助你度过人生中的转变,这是有年长的朋友的一个好处,空后“Then you’ll feel more ready for what’s coming in future stages.(然后你会觉得对未来的事情做好了更多的准备。)”
3. 空前“When older people make friends with younger people, they get to share their experiences which can be very rewarding.(当年长一些的人与年轻一些的人交朋友时,他们可以分享他们的经历,这可能是非常有益的。)”和空后内容“Giving your wisdom and attention makes you feel better.( 给予你的智慧和关注会让你感觉更好。)” A项“对人类来说,给予是件好事”既与上文“share their experiences”相照应,又与下文“Giving your wisdom and attention makes you feel better”相联系。故选A。
根据下文中的“You can first think about your acquaintances or coworkers and see if any of them share your values and interests and would make a good friend. Then see if you can make a coffee date. Besides, you can consider joining in a class that your coworker or acquaintance participates in that you think you will enjoy. (首先,你可以想想你的熟人或同事,看看他们是否和你有同样的价值观和兴趣,是否会成为你的好朋友。然后看看你能不能约个时间喝咖啡。此外,你可以考虑加入一个你的同事或熟人参加的你认为自己会喜欢的课程。)”可知,该段主要介绍了结交年长或更年轻的朋友的方法。C项“那么你如何建立跨代友谊呢?”准确概括了段落主旨。故选C。
5. 根据空前的内容“You can first think about your acquaintances or coworkers and see if any of them share your values and interests and would make a good friend. Then see if you can make a coffee date. Besides, you can consider joining in a class that your coworker or acquaintance participates in that you think you will enjoy.(首先,你可以想想你的熟人或同事,看看他们是否和你有同样的价值观和兴趣,是否会成为你的好朋友。然后看看你能不能约个时间喝咖啡。此外,你可以考虑加入一个你的同事或熟人参加的你认为自己会喜欢的课程。)”可知,该段主要介绍了如何结交年长或更年轻的朋友。空处也应是结交年长或更年轻的朋友的一个方法。F项“参加志愿服务等活动也被认为是一个有效方法”符合语境。故选F。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.

When I was little, my dad would let me sit beside him while he painted. He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the grassland by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sunlight going through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.
I understood what he was saying but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree (梧桐树) to rescue a kite stuck in the branches.

A. The Last Memory B. Father’s Best Suggestion

B. They took tests like word lists and number problems for two years.
