My first job out of college laid me off after just a few years. It was part of a tough business combination and lots of my co-workers also lost their jobs. Part of our job loss benefit was a career counselling (咨询) service but I didn’t want anything to do with it. I was frustrated, depressed, and blamed myself for not being good enough. I was convinced I was a terrible worker and no company would ever want to hire me again. About a month after the layoff, I was drowning in my sorrows when a career coach from the counselling company called. He told me to just come in and talk to him. When I said I thought it was a waste of time, he told me to trust him and just try it. Plus it was already paid for so what did I have to lose?
I went in and met with him. Not only did he totally improve my resume (简历) but he gave me a ton of good advice. He helped me see how unhappy I’d been in my previous position and that I really wanted to focus on a different area in my field. I ended up going to graduate school on his advice to get an advanced degree in a more specialized area. My new resume got me a lot of interviews and within a couple of months I was in a graduate program for professionals and working at an amazing job. It’s been nearly 10 years and now I say that getting laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me — that and trusting that career coach.
24. Why was the author laid off?
A. Company reconstruction. B. Poor performance.
C. Career change. D. New management.
25 How did the author feel after the layoff?
A. Confident. B. Indifferent. C. Self-blaming. D. Hopeful.
26. What did the career coach do for the author?
A. Found a new job. B. Arranged interviews. C. Paid the tuition. D. Perfected the resume.
27. What does the author think of the layoff now?
A. A misfortune. B. A turning point. C. A waste of time. D. A professional failure.

For many people, Christmas can be a magical day filled with delight and luxuries. But for those down on their luck or disadvantaged, it can be a time of sorrow and disappointment. That’s why the countries of the British Commonwealth have set aside the day after Christmas as Boxing Day.
Every December 26, going at least as far back as 1833, according to History.com, the United Kingdom and other countries that are part of the British Commonwealth — including Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India — have celebrated Boxing Day as an opportunity to provide some holiday joy to those who most need it.
There are competing stories behind the name Boxing Day. One is that it refers to the giving of “Christmas boxes”, a term that originated in the 17th century to describe gifts, money and other leftovers from Christmas that lords of the manor (庄园主) would give to their servants and employees for having worked on Christmas Day. Basically, Christmas boxes were holiday awards for the working class.
The other is that it refers to the “alms boxes” that would traditionally appear in churches in the weeks leading up to Christmas for the purpose of collecting money from church-goers that churchmen would distribute to those in need after Christmas Day. The day after Christmas is also the feast of St. Stephen, a holy man known for his acts of charity.
It is still a national holiday in many parts of the British Commonwealth, and while some people still give back to the less fortunate on Boxing Day, it has now become more associated with spending up big at a department store.
This year, on December 26, consider celebrating your own charitable Boxing Day. To borrow from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, your heart just may grow three sizes… instead of your wallet lessening three sizes!
28. Why do countries of the British Commonwealth celebrate Boxing Day?
A. To celebrate the end of Christmas. B. To provide awards to the working class.
C. To remember a holy man in history. D. To give holiday joy to the less fortunate.
29. What did the term “Christmas boxes” originally mean?
A. boxes to store Christmas decorations. B. Alms boxes in churches to collect money.
C. Leftovers collected from Christmas meals. D. Gifts, money and other items left for servants.
30. What can we infer from the text about the change of Boxing Day’s meaning?
A. The modern celebration focuses more on personal spending.
B. Its original charitable meaning has completely disappeared.
C. People no longer care about the less fortunate on this day.
D. The ways to celebrate Boxing Day haven’t changed over time.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce the history and meaning of Boxing Day.
B. To compare different stories behind Boxing Day.
C. To encourage celebrating Boxing Day charitably.
D. To criticize modern way of celebrating Boxing Day.

John Muir’s 1873 letter to his sister, describing Yosemite Valley, gave us the classic line “The mountains are calling and I must go.” This phrase has since become a motto (座右铭) for adventurers, while Yosemite itself inspired the creation of the National Park Service a century ago and still attracts visitors today.
Yosemite attracts climbers and BASE jumpers, but there are plenty of fun activities on the ground. Sentinel Dome, a short yet steep climb, offers a breathtaking 2,500-meter-high view. At the peak, you’ll be greeted by a 360-degree view of Yosemite’s famous spots. Half Dome’s sheer rock face stands grandly, while El Capitan, a hotspot for rock climbers, towers in the distance. Yosemite Falls rushes down the cliffs, creating a misty rainbow on sunny days. For an extended adventure, head to Taft Point. The cliffside views here are breathtaking, but remember to stay on marked paths for safety. Before setting out, it’s quite necessary to check the National Park Service’s official website for trail (线路) conditions, as weather can quickly change the landscape.
Biking is an enjoyable way to explore the park. With about 20km of paved trails along the Merced River under sugar pines and a flat valley floor, it’s easy to ride. Just be prepared to stop often to photograph the beautiful waterfalls. As you bicycle, the sound of rushing water and the smell of pine trees will accompany you. For those who want a more absorbing experience, consider renting an e- bike to cover more ground with less effort.
Since Yosemite’s water flows into San Francisco Bay kayaking is a perfect addition to your trip. City Kayak offers hourly rentals for a quick paddle along the waterfront or guided half-day tours to landmarks like Alcatraz or the Golden Gate Bridge.
32. Why are John Muir’s words quoted?
A. To prove his status as a famous naturalist.
B. To stress Yosemite’s long-standing appeal.
C. To show the origin of the National Park Service.
D. To introduce his exploration of California.
33. What should visitors do before climbing Sentinel Dome?
A. Rent climbing equipment. B. Take a local guide.
C. Wear warm clothes. D. Check trail conditions.
34. What is “kayaking”, mentioned in the last paragraph?
A A kind of boat. B. A rental service. C. A water sport. D. A guided tour.
35. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Yosemite: Where Nature’s Call Invites Adventure
B. Yosemite: Journey with Trails, Waterfalls, and Beyond
C. Yosemite National Park: Discovering Hidden Beauties
D. Yosemite National Park: Harmony of Scenery and Thrills

It was 8:30 a.m., and I was already too tired. I had gotten up at 5:00 a.m. and rushed out the door to drive a half-hour to get my father ready to go to dialysis (透析), which was another forty minutes away. This was a typical morning for me. But this morning, in a great hurry, I had misjudged the doorway in the hospital reception area and had roughly pushed my father out of his wheelchair in front of the elevator. I felt both helpless and hopeless.
As I sat crying, my cell phone rang. It was a newer friend. In spite of my hesitation, I decided to answer the phone. I tried to calm myself down, but she could tell. “What’s wrong?” she asked.
Perhaps because my new friend was a retired nurse, she knew people and could sense the anxiety in my voice. In response to her question, I began to cry again. “I just roughly pushed my father out of his wheelchair like a sack of potatoes out in front of the elevator in the reception area of the hospital,” I said.
“Well, at least you were in the right place for that,” she said.
My tears changed to laughter.
“You know, Deb, you’re lucky nothing worse happened,” she said.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Well, you’re running your family business, taking care of a family, looking after a mother who has dementia (痴呆), shuttling her and your father, back and forth from medical appointments, and managing their affairs and your own. Don’t you think that’s a lot? And what are you doing for you?”
“There’s no way I have time for me,” I said.
“Deb, there’s no way you don’t have time for you. Think of yourself as being in a plane, and it’s going down. You have a lot of people depending on you, but the one person who must come first to get you through all this is you. Put on your oxygen mask first, Deb, before you help others,” she said.
注意:

C To encourage celebrating Boxing Day charitably.
D. To criticize modern way of celebrating Boxing Day.
D 29. D 30. A 31. C
根据第二段“Every December 26, going at least as far back as 1833, according to History.com, the United Kingdom and other countries that are part of the British Commonwealth — including Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India — have celebrated Boxing Day as an opportunity to provide some holiday joy to those who most need it. (根据History.com的说法,每年的12月26日,英国和其他英联邦国家——包括澳大利亚、新西兰、加拿大和印度——都会庆祝节礼日,作为给那些最需要的人提供节日快乐的机会,至少可以追溯到1833年。)”可知,英联邦国家庆祝Boxing Day是为了给那些最需要的人带来节日的欢乐,即给不幸或弱势的人带来快乐,故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“One is that it refers to the giving of “Christmas boxes”, a term that originated in the 17th century to describe gifts, money and other leftovers from Christmas that lords of the manor (庄园主) would give to their servants and employees for having worked on Christmas Day. Basically, Christmas boxes were holiday awards for the working class. (一种说法是,它指的是赠送“圣诞礼盒”,这个词起源于17世纪,用来形容庄园的主人在圣诞节给仆人和员工的礼物、钱和其他圣诞剩菜。基本上,圣诞礼盒是工人阶级的节日奖励。)”可知,“Christmas boxes”最初指庄园主给在圣诞节工作的仆人、员工的礼物、钱和其他剩余物品,也就是庄园主给仆人的礼物和钱,故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“It is still a national holiday in many parts of the British Commonwealth, and while some people still give back to the less fortunate on Boxing Day, it has now become more associated with spending up big at a department store. 故选A。
文章最后一段“This year, on December 26, consider celebrating your own charitable Boxing Day. (今年,在12月26日,考虑庆祝你自己的慈善节礼日。)”表明作者写这篇文章的目的是鼓励人们以慈善的方式庆祝Boxing Day,故选C。
D
Since Yosemite’s water flows into San Francisco Bay, kayaking is a perfect addition to your trip.
A. A kind of boat. B. A rental service. C. A water sport. D. A guided tour.
35. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Yosemite: Where Nature’s Call Invites Adventure
B. Yosemite: Journey with Trails, Waterfalls, and Beyond
C. Yosemite National Park: Discovering Hidden Beauties
D. Yosemite National Park: Harmony of Scenery and Thrills
B 33. D 34. C 35. A

根据第一段“John Muir’s 1873 letter to his sister, describing Yosemite Valley, gave us the classic line ‘The mountains are calling and I must go.’ This phrase has since become a motto (座右铭) for adventurers, while Yosemite itself inspired the creation of the National Park Service a century ago and still attracts visitors today.(约翰·缪尔1873年写给他妹妹的信中,描述优胜美地山谷时给出了经典台词‘群山在召唤,我必须前往’。这句话此后成为了冒险家的座右铭,而优胜美地本身在一个世纪前激发了国家公园管理局的创立,并且至今仍吸引着游客)”可知,引用约翰·缪尔对优胜美地山谷的描述是为强调优胜美地长久以来对人们的吸引力。故选B项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Before setting out, it’s quite necessary to check the National Park Service’s official website for trail (线路) conditions, as weather can quickly change the landscape.(出发前,很有必要查看国家公园管理局的官方网站了解线路状况,因为天气会迅速改变地貌)”可知,在攀登哨兵穹顶之前,游客应该查看线路状况。故选D项。

City Kayak offers hourly rentals for a quick paddle along the waterfront or guided half day tours to landmarks like Alcatraz or the Golden Gate Bridge.(由于优胜美地的水流入旧金山湾,kayaking是你旅行的完美补充。
通读全文,结合第一段中“John Muir’s 1873 letter to his sister, describing Yosemite Valley, gave us the classic line ‘The mountains are calling and I must go.’ This phrase has since become a motto (座右铭) for adventurers (约翰·缪尔1873年写给他妹妹的信中,描述优胜美地山谷时给出了经典台词‘群山在召唤,我必须前往’。这句话此后成为了冒险家的座右铭)”以及后文对在优胜美地进行登山、骑行、皮划艇等冒险活动的介绍,可知文章围绕优胜美地国家公园展开,强调其能让人们响应大自然召唤去开展冒险活动。A选项“Yosemite: Where Nature’s Call Invites Adventure(优胜美地:大自然的召唤引领冒险之地)”能准确概括文章主旨,适合作文章标题。故选A项。

You don’t have to buy a Toyota, get a promotion, win the lottery (彩票), or do any other TV-approved thing to have a reason to jump for joy. This is one of those things that pretending it may actually help you feel it for real.
A pink sunrise
When was the last time you really watched the sunrise? No, we don’t mean when was the last time you were awake at dawn, hurrying through your morning routine so you wouldn’t be late. We mean sitting down and watching the sun peek over the horizon, changing the sky to bright shades of orange, pink, red and purple. ____38____.
A morning stretch
____39____? Check your phone, if you’re like most people. Instead, try taking a deep breath and doing a full-body stretch. It just feels so good. Wiggle your fingers and toes. Spread your ribs. Lengthen your neck. Feel every part of you wake up. And then check your phone if you must.
Picking up a coin for good luck

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Hearing her words, I still felt puzzled.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Gradually, I understood the meaning of her words.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing her words, I still felt puzzled. How could I possibly make time for myself when my life was filled with so many responsibilities? The thought of adding yet another item to my already overflowing to-do list seemed overwhelming. But I listened as she patiently explained that self-care wasn’t selfish. She shared examples of simple things I could do, like taking a short walk alone or reading a few pages of a book. Her calm voice calmed me down, and I began to see a ray of hope.
Gradually, I understood the meaning of her words. I realized she was right. I couldn’t keep pouring from an empty cup. That day, I decided to start small. I scheduled a half-hour each morning just for myself, even if it was just sipping coffee in peace. I also started saying “no” to unnecessary tasks. Over time, I found I had more energy and patience to deal with everything else. My friend’s advice became the lifeline I didn’t know I needed, and I learned that taking care of myself was the key to being able to take care of those I loved.
