On a warm afternoon in Queensland, Australia, 17-month-old Charlotte was toddling (蹒跚学步) in the sunlit yard, chasing a butterfly joyfully. Nearby, Khan, the Svilicic family’s newly adopted Doberman, watched her intently. The 90-pound creature had endured months of abuse from his previous owner before his rescue. Yet, over four short days, he’d begun to relax—tail wagging madly when Charlotte offered him her snacks.
Suddenly, Khan became aggressive, his muscles tensing and a low roar coming out of his throat. Catherine Svilicic, Charlotte’s mother, glanced up from her gardening, uneasy. Before she could react, Khan jumped at Charlotte, knocking her sideways with his shoulder. “No, Khan!” Catherine screamed, dropping her tools. But the Doberman didn’t stop. He grabbed Charlotte by the diaper (尿片), throwing her several feet across the yard.
Horror gave way to clarity as Catherine spotted the threat—a poisonous brown snake was heading right for the little girl. Khan’s “attack” had been a desperate rescue: this brave dog got Charlotte out of the way just in time and instead, he was bitten by the snake moments later. At the clinic, Khan received anti-venom just in time. The vet (兽医) warned that without his quick actions, the bite would have been deadly for Charlotte. “He took the hit for her,” Catherine whispered, tears streaming as she gently touched Khan’s bandaged paw.
The family had doubted adopting a Doberman with a miserable past, but Khan’s courage erased every worry. “He’s family now,” Catherine told reporters later. “We’ll spend years making sure he knows how loved he is.”
Khan’s recovery was slow but successful. He and Charlotte became inseparable—she’d nap against his side, tiny hand resting on his scarred body. The Svilicics fixed a snake-proof fence but knew no barrier could match the loyalty of their four-legged guardian. For the Svilicics, every wag of his tail was a reminder: kindness always finds its way back to you, often when least expected.
4. Why did Khan jump at Charlotte?

C. He disliked her terrible snacks.
D. He suffered constant abuse from her.
5. Which best describes Khan’s personality?

B. They will avoid gardening in the yard.
C. They will prioritize Khan’s well-being.
D. They will train Khan to hunt for snakes.

People are taking their health into their own hands it seems, as nearly half of UK adults (48%) have turned to online health information to self-diagnose in the past year, with 18% of 16-24-year-olds doing so at least four times, according to an AXA survey of 4,000 people. The trend reflects growing reliance on digital resources in social media for health advice.
While common issues like hay fever (27%), sunburn (19%), and colds (34%) dominate self-diagnoses, 32% report self-diagnosing their mental health conditions. Cases of anxiety and ADHD (多动症) are increasingly self-identified through TikTok symptom checklists, though experts warn such methods lack clinical preciseness. One 24-year-old participant shared: “I diagnosed myself with depression after online tests, but my doctor later owed it to vitamin D deficiency.”
So, why are people turning to Dr Google for help? Over a third(36%) complained about the difficulties securing timely appointments, while 22% avoided the NHS due to fears of long waits. With NHS waiting lists hitting 7.5 million — a record high — Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised in January to end backlogs and make millions more appointments available, providing greater choice and convenience for patients.
As patients increasingly use online research as a first step, AXA’s report stresses the urgent need for reliable digital health ecosystems. Research shows 52% of UK adults encounter conflicting medical advice online, and 1 in 3 struggle to distinguish credible sources. To deal with this, the report proposes three measures: confirmation of the qualification for healthcare professionals on social media, stricter content grading policies, and automatic early warning for misleading claims — a system already piloted by many platforms for COVID-19 misinformation.
With the healthcare system at a crossroads, bridging the gap between digital convenience and medical accuracy remains critical. As AXA’s health director noted: “Letting patients make their own health decisions shouldn’t mean abandoning them to a sea of misleading information.”
8. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Most of the self-diagnosis involve common diseases.
B. The 24-year-old participant regretted self-diagnosing.
C. Self-diagnosis of mental illnesses are not recommended.
D TikTok symptom checklists contributed to self-diagnosis.
9. What does the underlined word “backlogs”mean in Paragraph3?
A. Technical errors. B. Staff shortages.
C. Public complaints. D. Accumulated tasks.
10. What does AXA’s report suggest about conflicting online advice?
A. Qualifying online healthcare professionals.
B. Establishing trustworthy online health system.
C. Banning health-related content on social platforms.
D. Warning healthcare professionals of the misinformation.
11. What can be inferred from the last Paragraph?
A. It is urgent to provide accurate and handy online diagnosis.
B. Digital diagnostic systems will replace traditional evaluations.
C. It is vital to offer more financial support for healthcare system.
D. Social media platforms should stop providing healthcare advice.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

Researchers in Saudi Arabia have discovered a surprising new method for locating seagrass meadows (草甸), as reported in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
The scientists satellite-tagged 53 green turtles between 2018 and 2021 to track their movements while hunting for food. The turtles led the researchers to 34 previously unknown seagrass meadows in the Red Sea, increasing the region’s known area of seagrass by 13 percent. The turtles were about 20 times more reliable at identifying the sites than the Allen Coral Atlas — a conservation tool that uses high-resolution satellite images to map global coastlines.
Seagrass meadows play a vital role in the capture and storage of carbon. Together with mangroves and saltmarshes, they are more effective carbon sinks than rainforests. However, according to the study, “blue carbon” projects are blocked by gaps in our understanding of the distribution and extent of seagrasses.
Researchers in the Bahamas have previously used tiger sharks to locate seagrass meadows, but populations of these predators (肉食者) have declined enormously in many regions. Green turtles are increasing in some areas and the reptiles are much easier to tag — researchers can attach a satellite transmitter (发送器) to an adult female after she has nested on the beach.
Turtle-tagging is also a cheaper option, costing less than 1 percent of the tens of millions of dollars required to use technology such as planes fitted with special sensors.
“Countries need reliable, accurate data to make good policies for protection of the environment, which also protects their economies,” says Carlos Duarte, professor of marine science at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and lead author of the research. “Our study provides crucial data for the Red Sea, which will assist the countries along it in formulating conservation strategies and blue carbon programmes.” Melissa Hobson.
12 How do researchers follow the turtles?
A. With satellite images.
B. With movement maps.
C. With underwater cameras.
D. With satellite tracking devices.
13. What is the challenge of “blue carbon” projects?
A. Poor satellite signal.
B. Incomplete seagrass data.
C. Limited predator population.
D. Ineffective storage of carbon.
14. What can be inferred about turtle-tagging compared to other methods?
A. It’s less available. B. It covers larger areas.
C. It’s more cost-efficient. D. It requires less expertise.
15 What’s the main purpose of the turtle-tagging research?
A. To study turtle migration patterns.
B. To test satellite tracking technology.
C. To provide data for conservation strategies.
D. To compare marine species’ carbon storage.
D 13. B 14. C 15. C

Imagine you are waiting for a lunch appointment all morning, too anxious to read or take a walk, just watching the clock. ____16____ This state, often called “waiting mode”, refers to feeling unable to focus on tasks when you have a future event. Let’s explore why this happens and how to overcome it.
Several factors contribute to this feeling. For some, worries about forgetting the event or losing track of time lead to overfocusing on it. ____17____ For them, planning tasks effectively seems impossible. Anxiety also plays a role—negative thoughts about the event, like fearing judgment or failure, can trick the brain into treating it as a threat. This stress might cause a “freeze” response, leaving you stuck.
To break free from “waiting mode”, start by grounding yourself in the present. Simple awareness exercises, such as paying attention to your surroundings during a walk or taking deep breaths for a minute, can help calm your mind. If anxiety takes over, try the 5-4-3-2-1 method: name five things you see, four sounds, three touches, two smells, and one taste. ____18____
Planning your time in advance can also reduce stress—divide your schedule into manageable parts or tasks, like setting aside 90 minutes for a TV show or 30 minutes for exercise, and write these tasks down to stay organised. ____19____ Set a timer(计时器) to complete small goals, like cleaning your desk before the alarm rings, and reward yourself afterward.
____20____ However, with the right tools and strategies, you can take back control and ease the anxiety of anticipation. By focusing on the present, organising your time, and adding fun to tasks, you can turn waiting periods into productive or enjoyable moments.
A. This shifts your focus away from worries.
B. Then you find it hard to enjoy the present.
C. It helps you forget the upcoming appointment.
D. “Waiting mode” can waste time and raise stress.
E. To make waiting less boring, turn tasks into games.
F. Others struggle with sensing how much time has passed.
G. You don’t want to end up miscalculating and being late.
B 17. F 18. A 19. E 20. D

be faced with为固定短语,意为“面临”,此处描述客观事实,用一般现在时,主语The guzheng是单数,所以be动词用is。故填is faced。
故填To promote。
addresses common misunderstandings和insists on using “guzheng”... 故填and。
故填a。
故填which。
故填for。

My brother Matthew had always expected to have a little brother. When I was born, he was disappointed to have a sister. To him, I was an annoyance, small, weak, and coward (胆小的) and he often found comfort in teasing me. As a little girl, I often wondered if Matthew and I would have real friendship like other brother and sister, caring and helping each other.
It was not until he went to university that he unexpectedly invited me to visit him on his campus for the first time. In his room, he handed me a drink, telling me his struggle for making new friends and how tough he was to study Maths. From that day on, we talked more and our bond seemed to get changed.
One Thanksgiving, I was criticised by dad and didn’t want to attend the family dinner. Matthew stayed with me and we had dinner together — just the two of us. My big brother, once a man I felt distant from, became the person who accompanied me when I was in low spirits.
In the first summer vacation of my university, Matthew suggested taking me to make an off-road driving on 85,000 acres of desert in California. We learned some first aid methods and survival tips, knowing how to deal with minor injuries and send out a signal for help on a remote desert. After we got everything prepared, our adventure journey started and we enjoyed ourselves on the way. Unfortunately, on a windy afternoon our car overturned.
“Are you okay?” My brother asked from the driver’s seat in a weak voice. We were hanging upside down, trapped by our seat belts and covered in sand. I felt some blood flowing to my hand, my heart pounding violently, extremely scared.
Looking towards him, I found Matthew badly injured, his arm bleeding and stuck in the seat. There was a hint of fear lingering in his eyes, something I had rarely seen in my big brother. The man I’d seen as strong was now human, fragile (脆弱的).
It was my turn to give him help.

Hours later, the rescue team found us.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It was my turn to give him help. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my own racing heart. Look at me, Matthew. We’re siblings, and I will always be with you. Slowly but surely, we managed to free ourselves from the seat belts and crawled out of the car. I clumsily applied a clean cloth on his arm to stop bleeding and tried to bandage his wound carefully. After searching the trunk, I found a colourful rope and used it to make a large SOS sign in the sand, hoping to be found.
Hours later, the rescue team found us. They praised us for our self rescue awareness, saying they were on duty when they found our sign. I knew it was my care for my brother that gave me courage to stay cool. It’s ugly but I love it. Thank you, my dear sister, staring at the bandage on his arm, Matthew showed a comfort smile, weak but proud. With the help of the rescue team, we safely returned home. I finally understood that true sibling love came from company, care and help.

The family had doubted adopting a Doberman with a miserable past but Khan’s courage erased every worry.
A. He mistook her for a threat.
B. He attempted to defend her.
C. He disliked her terrible snacks.
D. He suffered constant abuse from her.
5. Which best describes Khan’s personality?
A. Playful but decisive. B. Tough but aggressive.
C. Sharp and protective. D. Loyal and independent.
6. What can be inferred about the family’s future actions?
A. They will fix a barrier to stop snakes.
B. They will avoid gardening in the yard.
C. They will prioritize Khan’s well-being.
D. They will train Khan to hunt for snakes.
7. What is the best title for the story?
A. A Heroic Rescue B. Live Side By Side
C. A Narrow Escape D. Return Good For Evil

As patients increasingly use online research as a first step AXA’s report stresses the urgent need for reliable digital health ecosystems.
D. TikTok symptom checklists contributed to self-diagnosis.
D

B. Incomplete seagrass data.
C. Limited predator population.
D. Ineffective storage of carbon.
14. What can be inferred about turtle-tagging compared to other methods?
A. It’s less available. B. It covers larger areas.
C. It’s more cost-efficient. D. It requires less expertise.
15. What’s the main purpose of the turtle-tagging research?
A. To study turtle migration patterns.

The man I’d seen as strong was now human, fragile (脆弱).
It was my turn to give him help.
