Magigi spent most of her time within the reserve’s protective boundaries, but after a year she escaped outside and was shot dead by a farmer. New research Maude and his colleagues have conducted confirms that Magigi’s unfortunate story is common for many relocated lions. For decades, wildlife managers in a number of African countries have used such a kind way to deal with lions that repeatedly kill livestock (牲畜). But the new research shows that after lions are moved, most continue to kill livestock and endanger villagers’ living. Across Africa, lion numbers have fallen by 43 percent in the past two decades, to as few as 23,000 animals today. About 3,000 remain in Botswana. The sharp declines are primarily driven by development—lions now occupy just 8 percent of their historic habitat. With less space set aside for conservation, lions are more frequently coming into contact with humans. These are usually farms, expanding around the edges of the protected areas. The lions eat livestock, which negatively impacts the livelihood of the farmers in these rural areas. Without a proper way to prevent these attacks, the farmers often turn to deadly force, shooting or poisoning the lions, which has resulted in the decrease in lion population. “Rather than trying to move lions,” wildlife conservationist Glyn Maude says, “emphasis should be placed on reducing the chances of lions encountering and killing livestock in the first place.” Many preventive measures are being tested in various African countries, including hiring lion guardians (守卫者) to monitor these big cats, creating lion-proof fences, sending out lion text alerts, and teaching herders to keep livestock away from high-risk areas. 4. Why was Magigi moved to the reserve? A. To stop her from being caught. B. To train her to get along with people. C. To get her to stay with her family. D. To prevent her from killing cattle. 5. What is the major reason for the decrease in the lion population in Africa? A. Human-lion conflict. B. Illegal wildlife trade. C. A natural disaster. D. The lack of food in their habitat. 6. What can we infer from Maude’s words in the last paragraph? A. Lions should be moved to avoid attacking cattle. B. The relocation of lions has proven to be effective. C. Prevention is the cure for lions’ attacking livestock. D. It’s impossible for lions to live with livestock in harmony. 7. What is the type of the text? A. A children’s story. B. A book review. C. A news report. D. A private diary. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第一段“Sometime back, after a six-year-old lioness named Magigi repeatedly killed cattle, Botswana authorities caught and moved her into Central Kalahari Game Reserve, far from people. (不久前,一只名叫Magigi的六岁母狮多次杀死牛后,博茨瓦纳当局将其捕获并转移到远离人类的中央卡拉哈里野生动物保护区)”可知,Magigi被转移的直接原因是它频繁猎杀牲畜,转移的目的是阻止它继续杀牛。故选D项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“The sharp declines are primarily driven by development—lions now occupy just 8 percent of their historic habitat. 故选A项。 根据最后一段““Rather than trying to move lions,” wildlife conservationist Glyn Maude says, “emphasis should be placed on reducing the chances of lions encountering and killing livestock in the first place.” (野生动物保护主义者格林・莫德表示:“与其尝试转移狮子,不如首先将重点放在减少狮子遭遇并杀死牲畜的可能性上。”)”及后文列举的预防措施,例如雇佣狮子守卫、建造防狮围栏等可推知,Maude认为解决狮子攻击牲畜的关键在于“预防”,而非转移狮子。故选C项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Sometime back, after a six-year-old lioness named Magigi repeatedly killed cattle, Botswana authorities caught and moved her into Central Kalahari Game Reserve, far from people. (不久前,一只名叫玛吉吉的六岁母狮因多次猎杀牛群,被博茨瓦纳当局捕获并转移到远离人类的中央卡拉哈里野生动物保护区)以及结合全文内容可知,本文以Magigi的案例引入,引用研究数据和分析,探讨了狮子数量减少的原因及保护措施,语言客观,结构清晰,符合新闻报道的特点。故选C项。 C I stood in front of my entire lab and told them I had made zero progress in the last year. At the graduate program’s annual presentation, highlighting students’ achievements, Michelle and I were taking a different approach and sharing our most painful failures. The audience sat in silence, apparently shocked. But we weren’t ashamed. Quite the opposite — we were proud to be sharing our full selves and building a foundation for relationships. Setbacks are an unavoidable part of graduate school, but too often we try to hide them. By sharing our whole selves, including our failures, we went on to build a deep, meaningful relationship. And we wanted others to experience that openness and support. We began the workshop by presenting our stories onstage. Then we invited the participants to turn to one another and share their own significant failures. An awkward silence followed, as we had expected, but it only lasted a few seconds. Soon the students jumped into engaging and enthusiastic conversation. Students even formed larger groups as they realized how many of their colleagues shared the exact struggles they did. Even after the session ended, whispered conversations continued until the next speaker took the stage. From that point forward, every presentation included some mention of the failures that led to the results. It reminded us that behind every impressive result is a person who is just trying his best. Since the workshop, we have noticed a sustained change in our classmates. The answers to questions like “How are you doing?” are more sincere and less perfunctory, and several students have mentioned they feel closer to their classmates. It’s hard to relate to someone when all you know about them is their accomplishments. Talking about failure normalizes it and proves it’s nothing to be ashamed of. 8. What do most graduate school students emphasize in their presentation? A. Their complaints. B. Their accomplishments. C. Their experiments. D. Their failures. 9. How does sharing failures benefit students? A. It helps them connect with their classmates. B. It contributes to their school courses. C. It stops them from feeling ashamed. D. It builds up their confidence. 10. What can we know about the participants? A. They whispered softly during others’ speech. B. They kept silent all through the workshop. C. They were active for most of the workshop. D. They felt shocked by others’ failures. 11. What does the underlined word “perfunctory” mean in Paragraph 4? A. Rude. B. Casual. C. Detailed. D. Direct. 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了作者和Michelle在研究生项目年度报告会上分享失败经历,进而推动同学们坦诚交流,最终促进彼此关系的故事。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“At the graduate program’s annual presentation, highlighting students’ achievements, Michelle and I were taking a different approach and sharing our most painful failures. (在研究生项目的年度报告会上,重点展示学生的成就,而Michelle和我采取了不同的方法,分享了我们最痛苦的失败)”可知,大多数研究生在报告会上强调的是他们的成就。故选B项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“By sharing our whole selves, including our failures, we went on to build a deep, meaningful relationship. And we wanted others to experience that openness and support. (通过分享完整的自我,包括失败,我们得以建立深厚且有意义的关系。我们希望其他人也能体验这种开放和支持)”可知,分享失败有助于学生与同学建立联系。故选A项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Soon the students jumped into engaging and enthusiastic conversation. Students even formed larger groups as they realized how many of their colleagues shared the exact struggles they did. (很快,学生们就投入到了热烈而热情的对话中。学生们甚至组成了更大的小组,因为他们意识到有多少同事和他们有着同样的挣扎)”可知,参与者在研讨会的大部分时间里都很活跃。故选C项。 【11题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第四段“The answers to questions like “How are you doing?” are more sincere and less perfunctory, and several students have mentioned they feel closer to their classmates. (对“你好吗?”这样的问题的回答更加真诚,不那么perfunctory,一些学生提到他们感觉与同学更亲近了)”可知,perfunctory与sincere“真诚的”形成对比,应意为“敷衍的”,与casual意思相近。故选B项。 D Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain? About 480 varieties of trees may be found in just one hectares of rainforest. Rainforests are the lungs of the planet — storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and producing a significant amount of the world’s oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival — the tall trees, making a canopy (树冠层) of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds. Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is the plants’ way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make leaf-eating insects like caterpillars difficult to eat up all of them. To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly across the gaps. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled (缠绕的) leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where dead leaves turn into food for the trees and other forest life. They are not called rainforests for nothing Rainforests can generate 75% of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal — and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain — your umbrella may protect you in a shower, but it won’t keep you dry if there is a full rainstorm. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity (湿气) of large rainforests contributes to the formation of rainclouds that may travel to other countries in need of rain. 12. What can we learn about rainforests from the first paragraph? A. They are habitable for humans. B. They cover a vast area. C. They are managed by Britain. D. They are rich in wildlife. 13 Which of the following contributes most to the survival of rainforests? A. Heavy rains. B. Big trees. C. Small plants. D. World’s oxygen. 14. Why do the leaves and branches of different trees avoid touching each other? A. For more sunlight. B. For more growing space. C. For the discovery of insects. D. For self-protection. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Life-Giving Rainforests B. Weather in Rainforests C. Animals in the Amazon D. The Law of the Jungle 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. Whether it was my classmates, teachers, or family members, I went out of my way to make them happy. I would agree to do things I didn’t really want to do, like lending my favorite books that I was still reading to classmates who asked, or sacrificing my own study time to help others with their homework. One day, my classmate Lily asked me to help her with a difficult math project. The project was due in a week, and it was going to take up a lot of my time. I had my own study plans and a big English test was around the corner, but I couldn’t bring myself to say no. So, I started spending hours every day helping Lily. We worked on the math problems, did research, and prepared the presentation together. As the days passed, I was getting more and more stressed. I was constantly tired from staying up late to study for my English test after helping Lily. On the day of the English test, I was so sleepy and unfocused that I made a lot of silly mistakes. When the results came out, I got a much lower grade than I had expected. I was devastated (崩溃的). Lily, on the other hand, got a great grade on the math project and was very happy. She thanked me, but I didn’t feel the slightest bit of joy. Instead, I felt a sense of resentment (怨恨) building up inside me. I realized that I had put my own needs aside for so long to please others, and it had finally had a negative effect on me. That evening, I sat in my room, thinking about what had happened. I was tired of always being the one to give in and sacrifice for others. I decided that things had to change. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。 The next day at school, another classmate, Tom, came to me with a request. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After firmly saying no to Tom, I felt a strange mix of nervousness and relief. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: The next day at school, another classmate, Tom, came to me with a request. He wanted me to join his group for a history project, which would require a significant amount of my free time. Just a few days ago, I would have immediately said yes without hesitation. But this time, looking at Tom’s expectant face, I summoned up my courage and said, “Tom, I really appreciate you asking me, but I have my own study schedule and personal things to take care of. I’m afraid I can’t join your group.” Tom looked a bit surprised. He tried to persuade me, saying that my ideas would be really helpful for the project. However, I stood my ground and politely declined again. Paragraph 2: After firmly saying no to Tom, I felt a strange mix of nervousness and relief. I was nervous because I was worried that Tom might be angry with me or that other classmates would think I was selfish. But at the same time, there was a huge sense of relief. I realized that it was okay to prioritize my own needs. To my surprise, a few days later, Tom came to me again. He said that although he was a bit disappointed at first, he understood my decision. He even thanked me for being honest with him. From then on, I continued to be true to myself. I still helped others when I could, but I no longer over-committed. 2.续写线索:Tom寻求帮助——作者拒绝——Tom说服作者,遭受再次拒绝——作者感到紧张和宽慰——要优先考虑自己——Tom理解我——作者做真实的自己 3词汇激活 行为类 ① 需要:require/need/call for ② 意识到:realize/be aware of/be conscious of ③ 理解:understood/comprehended 情绪类 ① 感激:appreciate/be thankful to/show gratitude to ② 吃惊:surprise/astonishment/amazement 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B Sometime back, after a six-year-old lioness named Magigi repeatedly killed cattle, Botswana authorities caught and moved her into Central Kalahari Game Reserve, far from people. B Illegal wildlife trade. C I stood in front of my entire lab and told them I had made zero progress in the last year. A. Rude. B. Casual. C. Detailed. D. Direct. D Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
