Ryan Finley is a sketch (素描) card artist for Topps and a visual arts instructor at Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood, Ohio. Ryan and his 10-year-old daughter, Keira, recently showed their artistic talents at a Beck Center exhibition. The exhibition “Side by Side” includes the pair’s artistic interpretations (诠释) of the same characters and scenes.
I first met the Finleys when I was a student in Ryan’s cartooning class. Keira, now a fourth grader, has been creating art since she was a young child. “She was always next to me, lying on the ground drawing,” Ryan recalled.
Keira’s love for art continued, and she became a student in Ryan’s class at Beck. The best part of “Side by Side” was having friends and classmates come to see the exhibit, Keira said. “I loved walking around with my dad and talking to everybody.”
Keira told local news media that she’d love art even if her dad had a different career. “If my dad wasn’t an artist,” she said, “I’d still probably be doing this.”
Ryan’s interest in art also began in childhood. “I’d always be drawing when I wasn’t supposed to be,” he told me. “I’d get notes all the time saying, ‘You need to focus more on your study.’”
That passion never left him. “In high school, I took every art class you could possibly take,” he said. Before becoming a Star Wars sketch artist for Topps, Ryan had other jobs, including working as a street artist. When asked what he liked best about his job, Ryan didn’t hesitate. “Surely the art show I just had with Keira,” he said. “It’s hard to even put into words. It’s pretty touching.”
Ryan also loves working with his students. “I do my best to make sure that they’re having fun with what they’re doing,” he said. “My favorite part is seeing the growth of my students.”
24. What do we know about “Side by Side”?
A. It receives a lot of support from families. B. It shows the works of a father and his daughter.
C. It is mainly open to primary school students. D. It is aimed to honor a father and his daughter.
25. How did “Side by Side” benefit Keira?
A. It made her more popular. B. It enriched her social life.
C. It enabled her to learn a lot about art. D. It made her know more about her father.
26. What do Ryan and Keira have in common?
A. They once worked as street artists. B. They both learned art at Beck Center.
C. They were once refused by Beck Center. D. They got interested in art at an early age.
27. How does Ryan feel about his job at Beck Center?
A. Boring. B. Challenging. C. Enjoyable. D. Touching.

Everyone knows the history of India. But not all knows how much wealth it gave to this world. I don’t mean the literature and culture it taught to this world. I mean the real wealth, the money, the gold and diamonds stolen by the British rulers, who governed India for nearly 200 years.
During the middle of 1770’s, the western countries, especially Britain, experienced the industrial revolution and it was completely financed by the wealth looted from India. The money and wealth were then used in the industrial revolution, which helped in the inventions.
Besides financing the British people to develop their inventions and economy, the wealth of India also helped Americans to grow economically. During 19th century, USA taxed heavily on any goods that are imported from Britain. Britain didn’t have any problem for wealth and money, as they were flowing from India. So they didn’t care about the high taxes.
Even after robbing (掠夺) the entire wealth of India, the British government was still giving more sufferings to the people of India by forcing them to buy their products like dresses which they wove by the inventions sponsored (资助) by Indian money.
Only few knows that the birth place of the world famous Kohinoor diamond, which is currently a part of the royal British Crown Jewels, is India. This 105 carat diamond was the largest one at that time and it was kept by various Mughal emperors. But it was later stolen by the East Indian Company, which was then gifted to Queen Victoria when she was declared as “Empress of India” in the year 1877.
It has been estimated that the wealth of one thousand billion dollars was stolen by the British rulers in that 200 years’ ruling, apart from some other wealth like gold, diamonds and raw materials which got transported.
28. What does the underlined word “looted” in paragraph 2 mean?
A Bought. B. Sent. C. Learned. D. Robbed.
29. How did America benefit from the wealth of India?
A. By taxing heavily on British goods. B. By stealing the entire wealth of India.
C. By giving more sufferings to Indians. D. By gifting the largest diamond to Queen Victoria.
30. What’s the author’s attitude towards the British rulers in the text?
A. Admirable. B. Angry. C. Supportive. D. Grateful.
31. What is the best title for this text?
A. The royal British Crown Jewels B. Britain and its industrial revolution
C. The wealth the British stolen from India D. The connection between Britain and America

Cats are commonly seen licking themselves and animal companions. But once in a while your cat will lick you.
“From birth cats explore the world through their mouths,” says Anita Kelsey, a cat expert. Though cats use their nose to smell, they also taste and analyze scent (气味) using their mouth to learn about things. When a cat licks you, it is trying to get more information about you.
But more than that, cats lick who they like. “Cats lick us as a sign of closeness,” says Kelsey. “It’s a form of getting us clean as they do with other cats they have bonded with. They are also enjoying taking in our scent. They love armpits (腋窝), for example, as there is a strong scent there.”
In addition to its affection for you, a cat might lick you for a variety of other reasons. To start with, if your cat is regularly coming at you with its tongue, maybe it wants to mark you as its person. What better way is there to tell other cats to back off than by painting you with the special scent from their mouth?
To deal with stress of fear, cats also lick. This behavior is especially common in cats which were taken away from their mothers very early, but it can happen in any cat. If the behavior seems to worsen over time, or is accompanied by nervous body language, you need to ask your vet (兽医) about treatment.
It’s very sweet that your cat likes you, but sometimes the licking can get to be too much, especially because the sandpaper tongue can really hurt! To keep your cat from licking you, you can draw its attention away by a toy, brush it with a brush or simply walk away, or even just put a cardboard box before the cat. It’s worth a shot!
32. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Cats smell in two ways. B. Anita Kelsey knows cats quite well.
C. Licking is an important way for cats to learn. D. Cats use their mouth more often than their nose.
33. How can your cat easily keep other cats away from you?
A. By following you as much as possible. B. By fighting off all the cats close to you.
C. By using scent to attract your attention. D. By covering you with its special scent.
34 For which purpose is a cardboard box placed before a cat?
A. To take a funny picture. B. To free you from its attention.
C. To make a house for the animal. D. To set up a wall between you and your cat.
35. How many purposes of cats licking humans are listed in the text?
A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6.

Words have great power. ____36____ Many of us have been upset by words and know how badly words hurt. Today I will share a few tips on how to deal with the effect of negative words spoken to you.
·____37____
If someone tells you “You are a fool.”, don’t believe it in your mind. People who hurt you can never really harm you unless you allow yourself to be defined by these words. You are a good child, so never allow yourself to feel inferior just by the words of other people.
·Turn those words into positive thoughts within you.
If there is something wrong with your actions, and others are trying to correct you, it can sometimes hurt your feelings if their words are hurtful. ____38____ Think like this in your mind, “Yes, I’m wrong, but I’ll find out ways to improve. Now I have hope because I can change.”
· Respond softly.
If someone speaks in a hurtful way, take a deep breath first and try to speak softly and kindly in response. A soft answer turns away anger. On the contrary, an angry answer is like a sword. ____39____
· Be silent.
If someone is purposefully hurting you for no reason, simply be silent and ignore it.____40____ It’s none of your business. It’s not your problem that they keep on hurting you on purpose. So simply leave it.
A. Don’t worry about what others say.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We used to live in a small village. While all of the villagers were quite poor, my family was relatively better off. My mother would bring over whatever food we could spare to our neighbors.
The Lim family, who ran a bicycle shop just opposite our house, was the poorest one. It was hard for Lim to feed his twelve growing children daily. It became even harder when the economy was doing very badly in the 1930’s. For many people, three meals a day was a luxury, let alone buying a new bicycle. Even my family had to make ends meet with two meals a day.
One day, I noticed my mother seemed very troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. There and then, she decided to sacrifice part of our meals for the family. Despite my protest that we too were hungry, she kept on doing the kind act from then on. Fortunately, the troubled situation did not last long, and the children in our family returned to our three meals a day again.
As time went on, I noticed that Mr Lim grew cheerful, too. The number of customers at his shop kept increasing. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as bicycles were very useful and popular for transport then.
However, it was at this time that my father’s business took a turn for the worse. My father was a grocery owner and he trusted people readily. One day, his senior assistant ran off with almost all the shop’s earnings. My father had to make up for the loss.
During that time, his health was also worsening. One night, my father suddenly fainted (晕厥). My mother tried several times to wake him up but failed. We children were all frightened and cried loudly.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

【答案】Dear Chris,
How are you doing these days? It has been a year since you came back to Ireland. I miss you so much. I still remember the very day when we met at China-Ireland Cultural Festival two years ago. It was at that festival that you shared so many interesting things about your country together through which I learned a lot about your food, culture and history. We really enjoyed ourselves there. What’s far more important is that we became good friends then. Though I felt a little sorry that you left China last year, I am pleased to know you are leading a happy life in your hometown.
I hope we can keep in touch often.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】 Hearing our cries, Mr Lim rushed to help. The moment he figured out the emergency, Mr Lim quickly drove my father to the nearest hospital and paid the medical bill. Luckily, the operation turned out a success. While my father was in hospital, Mr Lim often visited us with some necessities. To relieve my mother’s burden, he even drove us to school every day.
Finally, my father recovered but had more bills to pay. Again Mr Lim came to our rescue. He lent us some money and arranged for my father to work in his shop to get some income. At the same time, he financed the education for me and my sister and brother. Whenever my parents thanked him for his help, he just simply said that our kindness deserved it. Finally, I understood the old saying that a good neighbor is better than a distant cousin. I felt blessed to live in such a good neighborhood.
