Last April, after I published an essay about poetry as part of National Poetry Month, an editor told me he’d often thought that the world would be a better place if we had a poem delivered to our doorstep each morning instead of a newspaper. As a newspaperman, I’m not ready to discourage readership of each day’s edition, but maybe there’s something to be said for reading a newspaper and a poem each morning.
All of that has led to a small experiment. In an effort to keep a little poetry in my life long after National Poetry Month had passed, I resolved to read at least one poem a day after reading through the newspaper over breakfast. Thanks to two digital services that deliver poetry right to my email inbox, it’s been an easy resolution to keep.
Many public radio listeners are familiar with “The Writer’s Almanac”, a five-minute broadcast hosted by Garrison Keillor that airs on lots of stations around the country. Each day’s edition includes a handful of facts about literary anniversaries (周年纪念), along with a short poem that Keillor recites. Fans can also have the text of each episode emailed to them every day, along with a link to the broadcast version.
The Academy of American Poets has its own poem-day feature, called “Poem-a-Day”, just like a digital poetry postman. Launched during National Poetry Month in 2006, Poem-a-Day highlights new and previously unpublished poems by contemporary poets on weekdays and classic poems on weekends.
Since subscribing to both services last April, I’ve enjoyed receiving poems each morning. Reading at least one poem a day has also been like an intellectual vitamin (维生素), giving me a brief taste of literature even on busy days. Last April, I wondered if I could remind myself to read a poem each morning. Now, deep in summer, I wonder if I could ever do without it.
4. How does the author probably find reading both a newspaper and a poem?
A. Discouraging. B. Impractical.
C. Amusing. D. Worthwhile.
5. What has enabled him to stick to reading a poem daily?
A. The appeal of the poems. B. The routine of reading poems.
C. The convenience of digital services. D. The influence of National Poetry Month.
6. What can be learned about “The writer’s Almanac”?
A. It is a popular daily radio program. B. It marks its twentieth anniversary.
C. It features poems written by Garrison Keillor. D. It highlights unpublished poems on weekends.
7 What does the last paragraph reveal?
A. It has benefited him a lot to be a newspaperman.
B. He has developed a deep appreciation for poetry.
C. It has taken him long to fall in love with literature.
D. He is wondering whether to continue the experiment.

Researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the University of Cologne (UC) in Germany have developed an AI-based learning system.
The idea is simple yet effective: a webcam (网络摄像头) tracks students’ eye movements. Maike Schindler, a math professor from the UC, and her team have designed hundreds of math tasks involving basic math skills. Depending on the task, specific patterns appear, which are shown digitally on a heat map, with red indicating areas where the children look frequently and green showing the areas where they look only briefly. Confident students quickly get to key problem areas, while struggling ones often look aimlessly.
“Tracking eye movements helps recognize different learning strategies through patterns and finally create detailed support reports for teachers,” says Maike Schindler. “The AI system sorts the patterns. On the basis, the software selects tailored learning videos and exercises for the pupil,” says robotics professor Achim Lilienthal from the TUM.
To develop the new eye-tracking technology, Professor Lilienthal has drawn on his robotics research experience. In that work, he used eye trackers with a small human-like robot named Nao. It enables better communication with humans. However, these advanced systems with high accuracy cost many thousands of euros.
To find a better solution for schools, the researchers cleverly mix technical experience with math knowledge. Instead of using high-end eye-trackers, their AI-driven approach uses regular webcams and makes up for low accuracy through AI improvements. “By focusing on problem areas, the AI adapts the eye-tracking with the webcam, achieving accuracy comparable to high-end tools,” professor Lilienthal says.
Germany’s Wulfen Comprehensive School is the first to introduce the system. A math test there showed that about one-third of the new students struggled with basic math. With the AI system, one teacher can now support five students at once — a significant improvement over traditional one-on-one teaching. “As education faces teacher shortages and increasing pressure to deal with individual learning styles, our system for promoting basic math skills is simply excellent support for schools,” says Schindler.
8. What is the function of the heat map?
A. Presenting students’ focus areas.
B. Measuring the difficulty of math tasks.
C. Tracking the eye movements of students.
D. Comparing students’ problem-solving speeds.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The system’s advantages in recognizing eye problems.
B. The system’s role in supporting personalized learning.
C. The system’s challenges in tracking student behavior.
D. The system’s progress in upgrading specific patterns.
10. Which best describes the AI-driven eye-tracking technology?
A. Helpful but slow. B. Simple and relaxing.
C. Creative but costly. D. Affordable and effective.
11. What does Wulfen Comprehensive School get from the system?
A. Reduction in teacher training. B. Adaptation to learning needs.
C. Inspiration for advanced math. D. Absence of human judgment.
D
In a region in Georgia, a mysterious Bashplemi tablet (碑) has surfaced with a completely new writing system. The tablet measures about 24 by 20 cm and features at least 60 characters. However, researchers can’t confirm the structure of this system, its origin, or the meaning of the characters. And dating the tablet currently remains out of reach. The design suggests an excellent level of aesthetic (美学的) value, indicating the message held significant importance.
In 2021, fishermen on Lake Bashplemi accidentally caught sight of the tablet. Experts explain that what appears to be a series of unrecognizable symbols, such as three lines, is actually developed for its age, though that’s unconfirmed. The characters even show signs of skill. The makers first used a pointed tool to lay the symbols into the stone. To create a smooth series of characters, they then applied rounded tools, which shows a fair amount of work went into laying the message into the stone.
In an attempt to draw connections with other ancient texts, similarities can be found between the new text and the Kartvelian language script (文字系统) from the 4th millennium BCE. Moreover, it has traces (痕迹) of two ancient writing systems from the Near East. It is possible that interactions occurred between these ancient groups.
“Most of the symbols used in it are similar to those found in the scripts of the Middle East, India and Egypt,” wrote researchers in a new study. However, they stress that this is an entirely new form of text, which does not replicate any system of writing known to us. And it may change current beliefs about ancient writing systems greatly.
Early surveys of the area showed the presence of ancient houses. Lake Bashplemi, however, hasn’t received the attention it should have. For the study of ancient writing, this tablet is an exciting discovery. It may even be the never-before-seen writing system from ancient Colchis, a region in western Georgia. This points to the possibility of many more important discoveries waiting to be made.
12. What challenges researchers about the Bashplemi tablet?
A. Determining its cultural value. B. Approaching its discovery site.
C. Understanding its writing system. D. Examining its protection methods.
13. What can we know about the ancient makers?
A. Their focus on content over creativity.
B. Their limited access to local resources.
C. Their strategic use of specialized tools.
D. Their accidental discovery of tool usage.
14. What does the underlined word “replicate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Change. B. Influence. C. Damage. D. Copy.
15. What does the discovery of this tablet imply?
A. The region is of great research value.
B. Early surveys of the area are misleading.
C Ancient people kept updating writing systems.
D. The tablet was purposely hidden by ancient people.

Let’s be honest here: Impulse (冲动) buying is kind of fun — at least in the moment. People impulsively spend an average of $ 150 every month. That adds up to an extra $ 1,800 spent every year and about $ 108,000 in a lifetime. Ouch! ____16____ Let’s find out.
● Make a budget and stick to it.
First things first: You need a budget. ____17____ A budget isn’t a magic wand (魔法棒) that will suddenly make all of your money behave. It’s on you to tell your money where to go each month and then follow through with that plan.
● Give yourself permission to spend.
Yes, I just told you to stick to your budget — and you always should. ____18____ You’ve already budgeted a small part of spending money for it, so that reward or treat isn’t an impulse buy anymore.
● Wait a day or longer before you make a purchase.
These days it’s so easy to see something we want and click, click, click it into a purchase. One way to help here is to give yourself a day or so before you buy something. Then ask yourself if you’ll actually use this thing and if you can pay for it now. ____19____ Don’t let a countdown rush you into buying anything! A sale will come back around. Trust me.
● ____20____
Don’t let your emotions control your spending habits! This can lead to impulsive shopping, whether to reward yourself on a good day or to deal with a bad one. We’ve all been there before. How can you fix it? Whether you’re celebrating or trying to cheer yourself up, don’t buy anything when your emotions are riding a roller coaster.
A. Then you have to actually keep to it.
B. Make your budget as low as possible.
C. Avoid shopping when you’re emotional.
D. Why is it so easy to buy things on impulse?
E. How can we stop the impulsive shopping habit?
F. And watch out for deals that are only good for 24 hours.
G. But it’s also important to throw a little fun money in there.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One afternoon, my three children asked my husband and me to sit down to watch their PPT. The slides were designed to convince us that we needed a second dog. “Turtle would have a friend!” their last slide read. Turtle, our 32-pound dog, was almost 3. From his first weeks, he would stay at my side during the day. Each night, he found his place beside whichever kid needed him most.
“Okay,” my husband said after talking with me. “But,” he continued with his eyes on the kids, “you need to show us you can handle a dog by taking more responsibility for Turtle from now on.” In response, they eagerly promised to take good care of him.
To our surprise, that evening, Turtle didn’t come for dinner. We finally found him at the top of the stairs, sitting still, as if in pain. The kids’ excitement was replaced by worry. We immediately carried him to the animal hospital, where a vet (兽医) said he had a back problem and gave us some medicine.
But overnight, Turtle’s condition worsened. Back at the hospital, we learned an operation was the only option, although there was a chance that Turtle might never walk again. With a heavy heart, we decided to give it a try. Then we drove home to await the “all clear” call. Instead, with almost no warning, Turtle died, which came as a shock. Not even a day had passed since we had agreed to get a second dog.
That night, the kids crowded into our bed, crying. The next morning, I stared at Turtle’s empty water bowl and felt the house was too quiet without him. In the days that followed, our neighbor’s dog Bertie became a small comfort. My kids borrowed him to cuddle (搂抱). One night, my son asked, “Mom, could we invite a bunch of dogs over to play? Like a party in Turtle’s honor?”
I understood the desire. I’d asked to pet every dog I passed and looked forward to Bertie’s visits as much as the kids. Therefore, the idea for a celebration of life for Turtle was born.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The kids designed invitations that read, “Come Celebrate Turtle’s Life.”

7. What does the last paragraph reveal?
A. It has benefited him a lot to be a newspaperman.
B. He has developed a deep appreciation for poetry.
C. It has taken him long to fall in love with literature.
D. He is wondering whether to continue the experiment.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. B

With the AI system one teacher can now support five students at once — a significant improvement over traditional one-on-one teaching.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. B

C. Ancient people kept updating writing systems.

【答案】Possible version 1:
Dear Steven,
Hearing the idea of adding a new part before our English class, I’m writing to express my preference for the “Introduce an inspiring saying”.
This part can completely broaden our views by exposing us to diverse wisdom from various perspectives. For instance, students are expected to interpret and share insightful sayings with their peers, helping us better understand the English language and its cultural context, which in turn sharpens our language skills. Specifically, by interpreting the motivational saying like “Where there is a will, there is a way”, students can be inspired to adopt a more positive mindset in both studies and daily lives.
I firmly believe “Introduce an inspiring saying” will make our English class more vibrant and profound. Thank you for considering my suggestion!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Possible version 2:
Dear Steven,
Hearing the idea of adding a new part before our English class, I am writing to convey my preference for incorporating the “Share an unforgettable experience” part into our pre-class English activity.
Firstly, this activity provides a brilliant platform for us to practice and hone our English-speaking skills. When sharing our experiences, we need to organize our thoughts and express them in English, which definitely enhances our fluency and speaking skills. Secondly, these emotional narratives can bridge the gap between classmates, enabling us to develop a deeper bond. Students can share unforgettable experiences like the sports meet and drama show. By listening to such stories, we can gain insights into different perspectives, thus fostering a sense of unity.
I’m confident that this part will bring more fun to the pre-class English activity.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

To my surprise, 13 dogs and 40 people showed up that day.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The kids designed invitations that read, “Come Celebrate Turtle’s Life.” They drew pictures of Turtle playing and added colorful decorations. We delivered them to friends, neighbors, and anyone who had ever met Turtle, encouraging them to bring their own pets along. On the morning of the party, we baked cookies for the guests and carefully set out dog treats and toys. The kids even arranged a photo wall showing Turtle’s happiest moments. Our yard looked wonderful, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. As the start time approached, my heart was filled with a mix of hope and anxiety.
To my surprise, 13 dogs and 40 people showed up that day. The yard was full of laughter as dogs played and the guests shared stories about their own pets. My kids excitedly joined in the play and storytelling. It was a heartwarming and comforting sight. As the celebration neared its end, I gathered everyone together and my son read a note. “Turtle was more than just a pet. He was a beloved family member,” he said emotionally. As we all stood there, united by the memory of Turtle, I realized that even in his absence, he had brought us closer and taught us the true meaning of love.
