一、Warming-up and Review
T: Good morning, class! How was your day yesterday? Did you practice the sentences we learned in Unit 1 and Unit 2?
S: Good morning, teacher! Yes, we did./Not yet, but I will.
T: Great! Let’s start today’s class with a quick review. I’ll show you some pictures, and you tell me the related words we learned before. (Show pictures of a person coughing, a thermometer, fast food, etc.) Who can tell me the word for this picture?
S1: Cough.
T: Correct! How about this one? (Show a picture of a thermometer)
S2: Take sb's temperature.
T: Excellent! Now, I’ll give you some sentences, and you complete them with “since” or “for”. (Write sentences on the board: 1. She has had a fever ______ two hours. 2. He has been a member of the sports club ______ 2022.)
S3: For; Since.
T: Well done! These reviews will help us better understand today’s content. Today, we are going to learn Unit 3 Language in use. In this unit, we will further practice and master the language points we’ve learned in Module 4, including words, phrases, and grammar.
二、Word and Phrase Review
T: Let’s first review some important words and phrases. I’ll say a definition, and you guess the word or phrase. For example, if I say “an illness that makes you cough and have a runny nose”, you should say “cold”. Ready? First one: a pain in your head.
S: Headache.
T: Right! Next, the process of learning skills for a job or activity.
S: Training.
T: Good! Now, a person who belongs to a group.
S: Member.
T: Excellent! Let’s play a word - chain game. I’ll start with “health”. The next student should say a word that begins with the last letter of “health”, and this word should be related to our Module 4. For example, “health - headache”. Let’s go!
T: Health.
S4: Headache.
S5: Cough.
S6: Fever.
T: Keep going! This is a good way to review our words. If you can’t think of a word within 5 seconds, you are out. Let’s continue...
三、Grammar Focus - Present Perfect Tense Review
T: Now, let’s focus on the grammar we’ve learned in this module - the present perfect tense with “since” and “for”. Who can tell me the basic structure of the present perfect tense?
S7: Have/has + past participle.
T: Exactly! And when do we use “since” and “for”?
S8: We use “since” with a point in time, and “for” with a period of time.
T: Very good! Let’s do some exercises to strengthen our understanding. I’ll show you some sentences on the screen, and you correct the mistakes if there are any. (Show sentences: 1. I have bought this book for two years. 2. She has left here since last week.)
T: Think about it carefully. Which one is wrong and how to correct it?
S9: The first one is wrong. “Bought” is a non - continuous verb, so we should say “I have had this book for two years.”
T: Great! How about the second one?
S10: “Left” is also non - continuous. It should be “She has been away from here since last week.”
T: Excellent! You really understand the usage of the present perfect tense. Now, work in pairs. Create a short story together, and use at least three sentences with the present perfect tense and “since” or “for”. (Give students 5 minutes to work)
T: Time’s up. Which pair wants to share your story?
Pair 1: Tom has been interested in music since he was a child. He has learned to play the guitar for three years. Since he joined the school music club last month, he has made many new friends.
T: Wonderful! Your story is creative and uses the grammar correctly. Let’s learn from them.
四、Listening Practice
T: Let’s move on to listening. Listen to the recording in Activity 2. There are some short dialogues. While listening, fill in the blanks with the missing words. Pay attention to the use of the present perfect tense and related words. (Play the recording)
T: Stop here. Check your answers with your partner. Then, I’ll play the recording again, and you can correct your mistakes if there are any. (Play the recording again)
T: Now, let’s check the answers together. For the first blank, what should we fill in?
S11: Cough.
T: Right. How about the second one?
S12: Since.
T: Good. Keep going... After checking all the answers, discuss with your partner about the main idea of each dialogue. What problems do the speakers have? And what advice do they get? (Give students 3 minutes to discuss)
T: Time’s up. Which group wants to share your discussion results?
Group 1: In the first dialogue, the speaker has a cough. The doctor asks how long he has been like this and tells him to drink more water. In the second dialogue, the speaker has been ill since Monday, and the doctor suggests taking a rest.
T: Well analyzed! You caught the key information.
五、Reading Practice
T: Next, let’s do some reading. Read the passage in Activity 3. After reading, answer the following questions: 1. How long has the writer been a football fan? 2. What kind of sports does the writer take part in? 3. Why does the writer think sports are important? You have 8 minutes to read and answer the questions. (Students read and answer the questions)
T: Time’s up. Let’s check the answers one by one. For the first question, who can answer?
S13: The writer has been a football fan since he was five years old.
T: Correct! The second question?
S14: The writer takes part in football and running.
T: Good. And the last one?
S15: The writer thinks sports can make him healthy and keep him in excellent condition.
T: Excellent! Now, let’s analyze some difficult sentences in the passage. Look at this sentence: “I have watched almost every game on TV since I knew about football.” What tense is it? And what does “since” mean here?
S16: It’s the present perfect tense. “Since” means from the time when the writer knew about football until now.
T: Exactly! Keep up the good work.
六、Speaking and Writing
T: Now, it’s time for speaking and writing practice. First, work in groups of four. Suppose you are at the doctor’s. One of you is the doctor, and the other three are patients with different illnesses. The patients should describe their problems using the present perfect tense and related words we learned. The doctor should ask questions and give advice. Then, choose one of the dialogues and write it down. You have 15 minutes to prepare. (Students do group work)
T: Time’s up. Which group wants to act out your dialogue first?
Group 2: (Act out the dialogue)
Patient 1: Doctor, I have had a stomachache since yesterday.
Doctor: What did you eat yesterday?
Patient 1: I ate a lot of fast food.
Doctor: That’s the problem. You should stop eating fast food and take some medicine.
Patient 2: Doctor, I have coughed for three days.
Doctor: Let me take your temperature. Do you have a fever?
Patient 2: No, I don’t.
Doctor: Drink more water and have a good rest.
T: Great performance! Your dialogue is vivid and uses the language points correctly. Now, share your written dialogues with the class. (Ask some groups to share their written works)
七、Summary
T: OK, class. Let’s summarize what we have learned today. We reviewed important words and phrases related to seeing the doctor and health, and practiced using them through games and exercises. We also reviewed the present perfect tense with “since” and “for”, corrected some common mistakes, and strengthened our understanding through various activities. In addition, we improved our listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. Remember, language learning needs continuous practice. Keep using these language points in your daily English learning.
八、Homework
T: For today’s homework, first, make a mind map to summarize all the words, phrases, and grammar points in Module 4. You can use different colors and pictures to make it more interesting. Second, write a short passage about your own health problems and how you solved them. Use at least five sentences with the present perfect tense. Third, find an English article about health tips and read it. Underline the sentences with the present perfect tense and try to understand them. We will share your homework in the next class. That’s all for today. Class is over. Goodbye, class!
S: Goodbye, teacher!
